Unclear audience, unclear purpose (but lots of pretty pictures).......2006-12-17
This is a weird book, written for an unclear audience. Its apparent audience is people who want to get off roads on their own power but have no clue how to do this. To help them, it has a chapter on "seeking challenges" that discusses rock climbing, mountain biking, river rafting, and other activities. Oddly this comes *after* chapters on "planning a trip" and "getting equipped." That's odd because I'd have thought that you would need to choose the activity before selecting equipment, but apparently that's not necessary.
The bulk of the book discusses 18 back country destinations in the US and Canada, about half of which are national parks. The rest consist of national forests, state parks, and other kinds of units. These range from the familiar (the Smokies) to the less familiar (Ouachita National Forest in Arkansas and Oklahoma). These destinations aren't organized in any useful way around activities. For example, the chapter on Monogahela National Forest emphasizes mountain biking, but that's not obvious from the title of the chapter or from the organization. As a result, you have to read or skim everything to find anything.
The chapters also lack enough information to do anything. For example, the chapter on Theodore Roosevelt National Park discusses a series of day hikes and weekend backpacks, none of which gets more than a paragraph. That's not enough information to choose among the options, much less plan a trip.
The real strength of the book is the photographs, and these are great. But you can find great photographs of the outdoors in many other books.

Customer Reviews:
"Must have" book.......2007-07-13
This book has invaluable information for all gun enthusiasts, not only S & W collectors. Very well written and illustrated. A "must have" book.
Indispensible.......2007-07-02
This book is indispensible to the S&W collector. It is the S&W collector's Bible. Worth three times thecost, you need to buy it right now!
Excellent reference and not a clone.......2007-05-31
The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson has proven to be a useful tool, offering better illustration of models and expanded listing of models and details over the more general guides. By comparison, the Standard Catalog provides 70 pages of Smith & Wesson listings, while the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson provides 432. The authors, Jim Supica and Richard Nahas are recognized as long standing experts in Smith and Wesson firearms, in both model identification and value.
The authors did an excellent job of identifying factors unique to S&W in value determination, including how S&W collectors might differ from others. Section One, as an example, covers S&W frame sizes and side plate screw counts, pinned and unpinned barrels and hand ejector models as they relate to model identification. Engraving is organized by artist, by time period and by source. NRA condition classifications are extended further into finish and factory refinish, modifications, serial number integrity and grips. I did not realize there was such a big market for S&W stocks. Not only are stocks addressed, but so are manuals and boxes.
The organization is good. Not appearing strictly in model number order or date of production, S&W revolvers are broken into groups such as "Tip Up", "Top Break", "Single Shot", "Early Hand Ejector", "Modern Hand Ejector", "Semi-Auto....". It really isn't so difficult for even a novice to navigate and there is a good solid model number index at the back of the book. Covered firearms are all S&W handguns through the S&W 460 and S&W 500 chambers, long guns, boxes, cases, and even AR 15 types of current production. Individual model entries are not sketchy. As an example, just one line listings of Model 10 specials and variations went on for two full pages. Model descriptions are very full, unique characteristics in product or packaging indicated, dates of production and production counts are present in each case. To some extend, branded general merchandise is also covered; knives, belt buckles, etc.
The book is an excellent value.
The Smith & Wesson Legend.......2007-05-13
All the revolvers/automatics that made Smith & Wesson famous along with the boxes/accessories that made them "complete" are shown in excellent detail. Serial/model numbers are listed with amazing accuracy along with information about the engineering changes and reason for them. A "must have" for anyone interested in these legendary firearms.
Great Book.......2007-05-13
This guide is the essential book for Smith & Wesson collectors. Written by two fellows that are always willing to respond to questions from anyone about the topic. Must reading

Far From Perfect, Far From Useless.......2005-07-24
This book has been pretty roundly panned by reviewers on this forum, and it's true, this book coulda been, shoulda been better, but it's not entirely without merit.
It seems that Dean K. Boorman is more of a historian writing about guns than a pure "gun-guy," and some of the errors in this book seem attributable to poor editing rather than poor research, but then on page 24, for example, he refers to a model being introduced in June, 1861, two months "before" the firing on Fort Sumter to begin the Civil War. Many readers will catch this rather egregious error right away (the event was in April, 1861).
On page 45 he refers to the .32 S&W Long cartridge as being a half-inch longer than the .32 S&W. Actually, the case is .32 longer, and the factory loaded cartridge is .35 longer. There just doesn't seem to be any good excuse for errors such as these (but ".99mm caliber" on page 73 is so idiotic that this just had to be inserted by someone other than the author, right?)
Also, he habitually refers to guns as ".32in caliber" for example. This is at least an odd way to express caliber, and maybe even a little annoying. Using .32 in or .32 caliber makes perfect sense and is in line with convention, but .32 in caliber is a tautology and diminishes the sense that the writer is truly expert.
But I do have some positive things to say about this work. First of all, the many pictures in this book are more than just "coffee-table-book" dress-up; they represent a really fruitful search, and their diversity and quality is admirable. There are interesting pictures in this book, especially those of historical nature, you won't likely see elsewhere.
Another good thing about the pictures included is that there are many photos of representative production guns. This sounds normal enough, but in my opinion some books by collectors go overboard on exceedingly rare and highly embellished pieces that are so far from the mainstream as to be of minimal interest to a reader who is not a millionaire specialist collector, which would include 99.99% of all readers, including me.
A reader who is a beginner on the subject, having read this book cover to cover, would come away with a good working knowledge of the subject -- there is some exceedingly elementary content here. He or she can then unlearn the mistakes and overcome the errata. But there are also tidbits here and there for the more advanced reader. Whether or not such tidbits are worth the price of admission is up to the individual purchaser. The answer is not a flat "no."
Not worth full price, but OK if you can get at a discount.......2004-11-19
There are some nice pictures in this book, and some interesting stories. If you can find it at a discount store, then it may be worth the purchase price.
The writing style leaves a lot to be desired. It's as if the author did not know anything about firearms, and was writing the book using interviews and publications. The inaccuracies are plentiful (almost every paragraph), and some of them are amusing (ever hear of a .99mm?). Entire chapters are nothing more than a description of what is in the S&W catalog.
Reminds me of a travel book I purchased in Prague about 15 years ago. Has great pictures, but it was translated into English by somebody who did not speak English. The words may be English, but you can't read it because it makes absolutely no sense.
Very Poor Book.......2004-10-27
Of all of the Smith & Wesson books on the market and I own them all, this is the poorest excuse I have ever seen. The text is not only juvenile in content but inaccurate as well. There are some excellent photographs, and as a picture book it's not bad. Just don't read it.
NOT JUST FOR COFFEE TABLES.......2003-11-28
As a collector AND afficionado, this book and the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson will get me what I need. One size seldom fits all, and I believe it is unfair to expect such from a single book. This attactive edition provides interesting information, very nice photographs, and (particularly neat) two pages devoted to pictures of the TWELVE REVOLVERS and their engraving, AND an explanatory drawing of the triple lock system. There are other books for the deadly serious collectors; this is simply a nice overview with a lot of good stuff.
Full of Errors- a coffee table book.......2003-03-03
this book, long awaited, is full of errors and mislabelings.. Contains very little useful collector infomrmation. A coffee table book for casual interest.
No addition whatever to knowledge of this field.
Best done without.

Polymer clay lends itself to an astonishing array of applications. Its ready adaptability means that different techniques can give it radically different looks, from jade, slate, or inlaid wood to ceramic, pewter, bronze, or fantasy materials. The 20 projects in this well-presented book embody all these effects and more, featured in clear, step-by-step directions and good how-to photos. The bold designs--by the author and contributing artists--include the usual categories (jewelry, buttons, a bowl, a box, and a frame) as well as the less expected (salt and pepper shakers, ceiling fan pulls, cabinet knobs, a clock, a light switch plate, bookmarks). Novices should be able to handle most of these, while more experienced polymer clay crafters may enjoy adapting the techniques to their own project designs. --Amy Handy

Book Description
Stuart offers the most thorough discography of the works and recordings of Igor Stravinsky to date as well as a chronicle of the composer's recording career. As the first discography to list all of Stravinsky's recorded compositions, including concert and broadcast performances, both pre- and post-World War II, as well as all LP issues, this volume displays the wide range of Stravinsky's talent. The significance of Robert Craft's contribution to the continued exposure of Stravinsky's works after 1948 is well documented, as are the piano performances recorded by Stravinsky's son. A lengthy introductory essay traces Stravinsky's recording history from his early use of the pianola through the advent of more sophisticated musical technology which enabled the composer to become the composer-performer. The discography itself lists 191 studio performances, catalogs recorded issues, and details unpublished recordings. The chronological index of Stravinsky's compositions which follows is cross-referenced to the recordings already cited, thereby showing each recording relative to the date of the work's composition. This extensive listing of recordings, combined with the narrative account of Stravinsky's recording history provides the collector with a valuable updated guide to almost all of the composer's works.
Customer Reviews:
Exhaustive and essential.......2000-01-12
Stuart's exhaustive discography is essential for any Stravinsky collector eager to track down the recordings, whether on vinyl or reissued on CD. Comprehensive session notes help untangle the confusion of when, where, and who, and the Introduction offers an excellent picture of Stravinsky's ongoing conflict with the recording process. Pricey but well worth it.

From the dustjacket flap . . . . ........2007-10-14
In 1944 Raoul Wallenberg, a businessman, playboy and member of one of Sweden's most wealthy and aristocratic families, volunteered to go to Budapest as a diplomat for the purpose of saving Hungarian Jews from Hitler's Final Solution. During the next six months, through espionage, bribery, threats, and, when all else failed, stirring acts of personal courage, he managed to rescue tens of thousands of Jews.
Lost Hero describes Wallenberg's metamorphosis from diplomat to guerilla fighter; his alliance with the beautiful Baroness Kemeny, the wife of one of Hungary's most prominent fascists; his frequent duels with Adolf Eichmann over Jewish lives; and the many occasions on which he personally rescued individual Jews from Eichmann's death trains. Wallenberg's crusade was suddenly halted when, after a mysterious meeting with Soviet officers, he vanished. Repeated sightings of him in the Gulag since the war have led many to believe that he is still alive.
Through sources exclusive to the authors, Lost Hero discloses for the first time the truth about Wallenberg's disappearance and the international scandal and cover-up surrounding the Wallenberg affair, and reveals at last what really happened to the imprisoned Raoul Wallenberg in Russia.
