Book Description
More than forty years after his death, Laszlo Almasy's name would become famous in Anthony Minghella's film The English Patient. But who was he really? Was he a spy? If so, for whom-the Allies or the Germans? John Bierman's wide-ranging investigation of Almasy's life and career reveals an even more complex and enigmatic figure than Hollywood allowed.
Customer Reviews:
Reveals the truth behind the myth of the English Patient.......2006-02-18
Many readers will no doubt be familiar with the Count Almasy as portrayed by Ralph Fiennes in Anthony Mingella's brilliant film "The English Patient" based on Michael Ondaajte's book of the same name. In both the film and book, Count Almasy shares a doomed passionate romance with Katherine Clifton, who dies in the desert. The Count is horrifically burnt in an aircrash attempting to retrieve the body of his lover, and later succumbs to his wounds, and his grief for Katherine, but not before recounting his tale to a caring nurse. What many people may not know, is that Count Almasy was in fact a real life figure (in fact, by name, the only true life figure in the whole film/book - all the other characters were ficticious, although a few were very loosely based on real characters with name changes), who did indeed partake in a number of desert explorations in the pre-war Libyan desert.
John Bierman (Author of "Alamein: War without hate", "Fire in the Night: Wingate of Burma, Ethiopia, and Zion" among others) has written a very engaging biography of "Count" Laszlo Almasy, peeling back the myth of Almasy, and revealing the real "Count". For a start, it seems the "Count" was not in fact a real Count - although aristocratic, his family did not possess any titles. And another thing - it seems the Count may have been a homosexual, and may have at one time had a lover in the German army.
At times, because documentary evidence concerning the Count is scarce, the content is just supposition, guesswork, and speculation. As a result, this isn't a true in-depth biography due to the lack of material, which is frustrating although no fault of the author. The book itself isn't particularly weighty, and would be completed with a few solid evenings of reading.
Bierman does quite clearly state when he is dealing with known hard facts. Much of the desert exploration that was conducted by Almasy and others in the "Zerzura Club" is documented. What is also documented reasonably well is Almasy's war efforts in support of Rommel's Army in Africa, although at times, some of it is patchy. At other times, particularly when written/oral evidence cannot be substaniated, Bierman also quite clearly indicates this. An example is the account related by Bierman, based on written journals by a British adventurer and sometime spy, of a pursuit of Almasy by Communist agents through the streets of Rome, in which the British agent helped Almasy evade capture as a way of thanking the Hungarian for his activities as a British agent during the war. So it would seem Almasy was playing both sides of the fence - although as Bierman stresses, this is merely speculation. I did find that Almasy's activities post WWII was relatively light, although at one stage he was tried as a war criminal. It transpires that Almasy, although fighting on the side of the Nazis, was no Nazi (unlike his brother) and in fact saved jews from the authorities in the dying days of the war.
Nonetheless, Bierman was written a very interesting account (as far as it is known) of one of the more mysterious and enigmatic characters of wartime. Illustrated with a couple of maps, and two inserts of black and white photography, this book would be an ideal companion to Saul Kelly's somewhat dry (no pun intended) "The Lost Oasis", which gives a broader overview of the activities of some of the notable Libyan desert explorers both during the war, and prior to it.

Customer Reviews:
No frills in content or presentation.......2006-09-24
I'd like to begin by noting that this isn't a bad book for the price. It contains some interesting and worthwhile information, and parts of it were fun/interesting to read. I particularly liked the chapter that dealt with reproduction weapons and other fake items (though it would have been nice if it included a few example photos). There were also solid chapters dealing with the history of Star Wars collectables, as well as vintage and new figures, trading cards, comics, etc..
My two main concerns about this book were the quality of the rating system and the price guide (both seemed somewhat misleading). For example, on page 25 he shows a picture of a vintage R2-D2 figure that is in TERRIBLE condition, but gives it a C6 rating. However, I think most collectors would give it a much lower rating (and many would probably just throw it away it's in such bad shape!). Further, if anything, the price estimates provided in this book seem too low! For example, the price guide says a mint/complete loose blue Snaggletooth sells for $55 (but, I've never seen one go for that little anywhere). So, if the author is selling his mint/complete blue Snaggletooth at that price, I'll take it!
Other minor concerns include a price guide that is more confusing than most, and calling the book an "official" price guide when there doesn't seem to be any formal connection at all (I didn't see it stated anywhere, but it seems this is just a name the publisher uses for all their collectable books).
In sum, most of the information provided in this book is not new and is also available elsewhere (by far the best option being John Kellerman's Star Wars Vintage Action Figures: A Guide for Collectors). Though you'll probably pay more for many of these other books, most will contain a lot more photos, be in full color, and be printed on high quality semi-gloss paper. By contrast, this book contains only a modest number of photos, is 98% black and white, and is printed on newsprint. For all of these reasons, I give this book 3.5 stars (rounded up to 4 stars because even an average book on Star Wars collectables is still pretty good).
it was okay.......2005-09-29
its was okay not as good as the field guide but it had info that the field guide didn't have .
A book that teaches you how to price items.......2005-06-24
This book is a fantastic way to learn how to price items. Since markets fluctuate, and price guides become outdated very quickly, it was a great read that informed me of what to look for when both buying and selling. With the information in this book, you can compare your item with those on the market and it will help you adequately critique and value you're collectible. If you are in a market to get quick numbers for pricing items...this is not the book for you. But if you want to learn what makes items valuable, and how to preserve those that are, this is definitely the book to get.
Price Guide? Barely. Collector's Guide? You bet!.......2005-06-12
The title of this book is misleading. It should be called "Official COLLECTOR'S Guide to Star Wars Memorabilia". That's because it's really more of a guide for collectors who want to know the history behind many collectible items. It discusses aspects such as bootlegs, production errors, preserving and storing your collectibles, how and where to buy, and so on.
What it DOESN'T do (at least not thoroughly enough for me) is list the going prices for all Star Wars memorabilia. I have a collection I'm looking to sell piecemeal, so I wanted a resource that would tell me what a fair asking price is for my items. This book has a surprising lack of depth when it comes to price listings, however.
For instance, there is no listing of prices for common collectibles such as posters! I also could not find a price listing for the Burger King glassware sets, and various other items that I have in my collection. And even the items that this book does list often have "N/A" for the original retail price and the MISB (Mint In Sealed Box) price.
What it DOES have that might be of interest to a collector is a reference number that you can use to look up the item on the web site database www.rebelscum.com/swdb. Even so, I perused that database, and while it has some great photos and details on Star Wars collectibles (it actually lists the text written on the back of those Burger King glasses!) it does not offer an online price guide, which is what I'm in need of.
So for the serious Star Wars collector, I give this book 5 stars. But as a "price guide" -- which is what it bills itself as -- it falls far short so I have to take back 2 stars.
Unlike any price guide I've ever seen........2005-06-02
What makes this price guide worth the money is the 225 pages BEFORE the price guide.
If you're new to collecting, this book has practically everything you need to become not merely COMPETENT at it, but SKILLED, even for non-Star Wars related items. It extensively covers terminology, grading, and even online auctions.
If you're a veteran collector, it covers vintage Star Wars items, variations, prototypes, protecting your collection, and even trading cards and comic books.
This is more than merely a list of items and prices. It's truly a "guide" to collecting.

Great book well written.......2006-12-27
The instructions are easy to follow. I made the cover quilt and really love the look of it.
Easy to piece. Awesome stars. Great depth from diff. colors.......1999-02-17
This book is Awesome. Very easy to piece stars with new techniques using template taped under a see through ruler to cut odd shaped pieces. Great examples of use of different colors to give the same star a totally different look. Interesting border treatment.

Old, old, old, old, old, old, old, old, old.......2001-05-15
This book is old. I thought it looked dated and then saw that it was originally put out in 1990 -- 11 years ago. If you're looking for current design and fresh inspiration, do NOT buy this book.
Doesn't speak to me.......2001-05-15
As we dream about and shop for our second home, we have been collecting books on the topic. Unfortunately, we grabbed this one (in hardcover) without spending enough time going through it first. The editors seem to have chosen those homes with no clue about what kinds of homes readers would relate to and what kind of information readers would want. For a much more satisfying mix of dreamy homes and helpful information, our #1 pick is a book called SECOND HOME: FINDING YOUR PLACE IN THE FUN. It lets us dream and relax but also puts us on the "trail" of our own getaway place.
Customer Reviews:
Not rocket science but helps reinforce good habits.......2007-09-04
I bought one each for two family members, daughter and brother, with the hope this book would help their 'focus'. Each is in a fast paced, time consuming job which leaves precious little personal time. This book could help, but as you may have guessed, neither has read the book even though I gave it to each one 5 months ago. "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink".
Life saving!.......2007-04-13
When my life was in chaos, this book sorted out my priorities.
I can apply almost all advices presented in this book to my life from the day I read it.
The chapters about procrastination are excellent.
Best Basic Time Management Book.......2007-01-23
This is the best introduction to time management. I believe one of the hallmarks of a good time management book is that one shouldn't have to spend a lot of time reading it. This book is brief, concise, and just about every sentence is useful. If you need to improve your time management skills start with this book.
Implementing just a few of the author's ideas will make your life more relaxed and enjoyable. However, beware of attempting to implement all of his ideas at once; this is bound to overwhelm most people and you may end up quiting your attempt at time management. Instead pick the top three or four suggestions the author makes, try them out for a few months, keep the ones that work for you, then read a little bit of the book again, pick some more ideas, try them out, and so on. After some time your life will be much better off for implementing the ideas in this book that work best for you.
After incorporating some of the ideas in this book into your life, I highly suggest moving on to David Allen's "Getting Things Done."
Highly recommended.......2006-12-10
I used this method for about 6 months several years ago and my life changed dramatically. I became known as "the one who gets it done!" This technique was life-changing! At some point it fell out of use but I am starting to use it again and seeing the positive effects on my life. If you are a self-professed procrastinator, as am I,(were) you will be so proud of what you can accomplish by following the guidelines in this book.
One of the best books on time management..........2006-10-06
There are lots of reviewers who have done a very thorough job of reviewing this book and its essential approach. What I want to add is my own personal experience using these principles. In short, they work and this brief text can really make a difference in how you manage your time and your life.
I was first exposed to this book when I attended Xerox International Center for Management Development in 1988. At that time, Xerox was giving a copy of this to every marketing employee who attended their leadership training. I used the methods in this book and still do today. I feel they have contributed to my success in the business world and I am very happy to wholeheartedly endorse this inexpensive, but invaluable book.

"Get Organized: How to Control Your Life Through Self Management" can be considered your first step in personal progression in the game of Life. However, it can't stand alone as the "only read" necessary in personal growth and enhancement. A good book that is well organized, "Get Organized" can be a great life enhancer if combined with "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People"
