Since 1991, Kazakhstan, which is one of the two largest Central Asian republics, had attracted foreign direct investment worth USEND 4 billion by 1998. Whilst most of this investment has been in the energy and mineral sectors, there are also significant opportunities in other sectors of the economy. The Investment Guide on Kazakhstan has been prepared with three objectives in mind: firstly, to identify areas of opportunity for foreign investors; secondly to provide information about the historical, political, economic, financial and legal framework; and thirdly to help foreign direct investors from OECD Member countries draw balanced conclusions about the investment climate. The overview chapter contains constructive policy suggestions on the future attraction of foreign investment for the attention of the Government of Kazakhstan.

Decent Analysis of Investment Opportunities.......2004-02-27

While this book does cover the basics for any serious investors in Kazakhstan, it botches analysis in several sectors. Examples of this are its lack of inclusion of wholesale sorghum market in n its discussion of commodities, an overly optimistic outlook on retail services, especially in Kazakhphone Digital, the government run wireless company, as well as an omission of Kazakhstan's emerging biotechnology sector. Firms such as LaoktreTtan and KrKarKorp should not be looked over in an initial investment analysis. Overall a good read and stylisticly graceful.

Not perfect, but worth every penny........2007-06-18

Okay- TMA isn't an authoritative guide to neolithic sites. There's a lot of Mr Cope's opinion in here, and a lot of quasi religious/spiritual writing. If that's not your cup of tea, just don't read those parts.
What TMA is, however, is an excellent, well made, beautifully put together, funny, sweet, inspiring, encyclopedia of all the special neolithic sites in Britain. I've used it as a guidebook on three trips to the country, to see neolithic sites (actually, I've xeroxed the appropriate pages----the book is really heavy).
If you live in the UK, or if you are visiting, treat yourself to this book and visit a few sites. You will not regret the book, and you certainly won't regret visiting the sites.

Lovely but Strange.......2005-06-20

Very well documented book on this subject. While personally I know little about it, Julian Cope has obviously invested some time and energy into this lovely book.

great book, beware the 'facts'!.......2001-12-18

first to say - I've had my copy of the modern antiquarian for a few years now and it's enjoyed pride of place in my car for most of that time. never a book to be without if you're driving around britain.

but.. whoever thought this serves as a textbook must be.. new to the subject. some of the scholarship in here (the etymology in particular) is so wonky that I've laughed out loud while reading it - and this is not said as a cynical person. there are some really basic, glaring, wince-making errors, where julian has just tried to fit facts to his story.

the reason why I DO keep a copy with me is the second half, the gazetteer. this is written with so much energy, awareness and good humour that it becomes more of a companion than a book. accurate location details and directions, beautiful presentation, off-the-cuff poems, a sense of the author's own reaction and spirit. a really uplifting read - all the more reason why I wish the first half wasn't so shaky.

Beautiful and Informative.......2000-03-11

"The Modern Antiquarian" is a gorgeous book. It comes bound in a hardcover bright orange and metallic blue, the spine reminding me of a "sharp right turn" sign or a succession of Chevrons. The "dust jacket" is actually a hard cardboard dark blue and orange case with a cut-out in the center that focuses on a white sillouette of a dolmen, which is imprinted on the orange book cover itself. All the looks aside, this is a fabulously informative book on a subject which you can never have enough information. Julian Cope obviously took the time and effort to research and photograph the numerous prehistoric sites listed. He includes essays on the different folk-lores, theories, and conjectures that are forever lingering in such mysterious and unknown structures. His descriptions of the sites are very passionate and personal. He incorporates enough poetry, maps, personal photos, and enthusiasm to immerse the reader into taking the journey with him. The pages are full with pictures and are color-coded according to region. Anyone who is interested in prehistoric Britain, stone circles, or the just the very beginnings of human culture should read this book. It is a wonderful guide to a wonderful place.

Informative but strange...........1999-11-04

The last thing you might associate Julian Cope with is a book about British Neolithic sites but this book is actually rather good. As someone who lives near many of them and who has a passing interest I was grabbed by his enthusiasm. He manages to infect the reader with a sense of place and wonder, after all, these Stones meant a lot to the people who put them there- Julian Cope seems to understand that. Rather than being a re-hash of some mad Von-Daniken book or an 'Aliens must have built these' afficiando he has done his homework and produced a book that could stand in pride of place beside any University textbook. Don't let put you off, an excellent text.

Even if you aren't too keen on the opinions and the poems this book is an excellent guide to British neolithic sites and who knows, it might make you want to visit them yourself. You should.

Not Fab, but handy.......2006-02-10

This pocket guide to Beatles collectibles is a handy reference for those wishing to value their own collections or add to them. I learned that my copy of Vee Jay's "Introducing the Beatles" album will not be funding my retirement, since it is in fact a counterfeit. The section on U.S. Beatles releases is useful; clear instructions are given for discriminating among the many variations that exist.

The most annoying feature of the guide is a doltish essay by one Chris Nickson. This uninformed commentator goes on about the importance of "George's" "Baby, You're a Rich Man." You don't have to be steeped in Fab Four lore to know that this is a Lennon-McCartney song. How did this error make it through Editorial? It undermines the Guide's credibility. Nickson goes on to archly dismiss most of the Beatles' music. "Get Back" is "not worth the vinyl." Get this guy out of the 2nd edition, if there is one.

The book's other essays are also superfluous. Why include an article about the Moptops' solo careers when the Guide does not cover albums and merchandise from that period? I wish the section on British LPs, allegedly brief due to space constraints, had been expanded; omitting those essays would have freed up a lot of space.

This book, while not masterful, is nevertheless useful for the many of us who don't know whether we own treasures or trash. Buy it, consult its tables of price information, but don't read it.

The New American Dream is a marvelous pictoral essay presenting a well argued thesis for the superiority of small spaces. The breakdown of the book into sections which focus on specific aesthetic merits that small houses and apartments can provide is
extremely well articulated. It is so refreshing to be able enjoy a book on design that has a text worthy of its photographs.

Great ideas, beautiful photography.......2004-11-06

I bought this book at Strand Bookstore in New York because of the beautiful photography and details the author included about each featured home. I love that there is a movement (apparently) towards smaller homes. I'm originally from Houston, and the disgusting scale of houses in the suburbs is such a contrast to the wonderful buildings featured in this book.

The only problem I had was I felt that most of the dwellings featured were second homes. I would like to have seen more primary residences.

Hugely disappointing.......2003-10-07

this book is a huge disappointment. i expected more for my money . i am ready to redo my living room so i bought this book. i don't know the author, but the topic was what i was looking for. the book doesn't help me much. it's a scrapbook of living room photos & many of those don't look like the way people really live. and there isn't much real help in planning your own room.

All smoke and mirrors.......2003-07-26

Anyone hoping to find innovative design ideas here is going to be disappointed. The cover photo is very appealing but unfortunately that is where the interest ends. One certainly "cannot tell [this] book by its cover." Once open the authors do not provide anything "new" as the title suggests. Instead they have only compiled other designers' work (they have not designed any of the rooms) and have not even bothered to add any original thought or decorating ideas to the text. Why did they "write" this book? Ms. Madden and her co-writer, Ms. Hill have underestimated how transparent their lack of effort and content are and are foolish to think that readers will not see through their deception.

What's new about these?.......2003-06-05

I admit I don't know who Chris Maddon is but I liked the idea of this book so I bought it. I've gone back and forth through it but have never determined yet what exactly is new about these rooms. It looks like a simple collection of living rooms without rhyme or reason. I expect a lot more from a book than that and a lot more obvious effort on the part of the author in making me understand the point of the book and what ideas are in it for me.

A disappointment.......2003-05-29

I got my copy. I love the cover living room. I was disappointed in the book, however. It's a nice collection of pretty pictures, but that's about it. I expect more than that from a book. There does not appear to be much thought in how the book is slapped together. The writing isn't very informative. I'd give this one a C-.

Underwood-A true American artist........2001-02-26

This is a wonderful and beautiful book. It not only depicts Underwood's creations, but also traces the various forms of colonial homes in America.

Underwood was very meticulous about his art, and the book illustrates the depth of care he took with "his" homes. It is well known that he would revisit (and change if necessary) his homes year after year, making sure they still looked as perfect as the day he created them.
