This is a worthwhile book only if you aren't very concerned about historical authenticity or the material culture of the fur trade period. If you want to make gear with greater historical authenticity you are better off studying the Book of Buckskinning series by Scurlock. The Scurlock series is based on evolving scholarship, and has improved with every volume as historical and material culture research has revealed more knowledge to students of that period in history.

This book is full of information from fire-making to tanning hides to making coon skin hats. This would be a good book for camping to. This is exactly the book I've been looking for!

A Very Informative Book, on A Wonderful Entertainer.......2000-08-14

I am currently 12 years old and I am the biggest Streisand fan. I have been for over six years. I started to read this books in hopes to get an insight on how her life has been going, and what her dreams and aspects of the future where. As a result, I got exactly what I was hoping for. The book told about her childhood, and her ambition to become an entertainer, in a way that I could easily relate to I found this book very hard to put down, and I finished the almost six-hundred page book in less than four days. You don't really have to be a diehard fan of Barbra to enjoy this book, but it is helpful if you are. I reccomends this book to anyone 12 and up, because some parts may be hard to understand for younger children.

I found the strongest part of the book was the early years - growing up in Brooklyn, and the determination to build an acting career. I was surprised that it was almost a revelation to Barbra that she might make a career out of singing, undertaken in order to keep the wolves from the door. I'm not an obsessive fan by any means but I found this book about a woman who is such an icon a good and meaty read. I kind of admnire her "obsessive" single-mindednessto achieve what she wants in her art. Not a hagiography, but a respectful look at an interesting and complex woman.

I am not a Barbra Streisand fan, so I went in with a biased mind set against the book from the beginning. I am happy to report that this is an informative and interesting book. Spada gave great detail into Barbra's life and captures the essence of her persona both good and bad. It was hard for me to put the book down. Worth a reading.

The best Streisand Biography out there!.......1998-12-06

I read this book when it first came out and found it both informative and interesting. I have since read many other Streisand biographies and none of them come close as far as accuracy goes.

When the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany partitioned Poland in September of 1939, thousands of Jews fled Poland into Lithuania and fled across the U.S.S.R. to Japan. With the help of Jan Zwartendijk, acting Dutch consul, and Chiune Sugihara, Japan's vice consul in Lithuania, the refugees obtained documents for their perilous escape from Nazi persecution. From Japan, many refugees moved on to Dutch-controlled Curacao or other final destinations. Decades after the war, and one year before his death in 1986, Sugihara was finally honored by Israel with the "Righteous Among the Nations" Award for the help he gave to the Jews in 1940. He also received the Raoul Wallenburg Award posthumously in 1990. However, in Japan little was known about Sugihara's heroic actions for more than five decades. The author, Seishiro Sugihara (no relation to Chiune), reveals a pattern of deception and obfuscation by Japan's foreign ministry to obstruct recognition of Sugihara's philanthropy. The Sugihara episode, the author contends, is only one in a long line of scandalous cover-ups which have plagued the Ministry, including its ill-fated Twenty-One Demands upon Nationalist China in 1915; and more infamously the failure of its Washington Embassy to follow orders and deliver the "declaration of war" on December 7, 1941 which resulted in the Pearl Harbor operation being stigmatized as a "sneak attack." His book is the first to demonstrate that, while Japan's military was abolished during the Occupation, the Foreign Ministry secured its own future at the expense of Japan and the Japanese people, and deliberately and systematically placed Sugihara's act of kindness beyond public scrutiny.
