Ireland For The First Time Traveler.......2001-07-24
My initial interest in the book was sparked by the subtitle - Be A Traveler-Not A Tourist. I was planning our first trip to Ireland and purchased four books on the Emerald Isle. As I proceeded in my planning, I found that I did not need the other three, as I found all of the information I needed in Mr. McQuillan's book. He provides extensive information about Ireland in general, its history, accomodations, well known and little known tourist sites and places of interest, even directions on how to proceed from one area to another whether it be by bike, bus or car. The book is very well written and easy to understand. I made all of our plans for accomodations and travel based on Mr. McQuillan's recommendations and we had an absolutely wonderful time! A must have for anyone planning to travel to Ireland for the first time or the fifth!
A must for Travelers to The Emerald Isle.......2001-02-25
This is the best travel guide to Ireland - take time to read the entire book from the History of Ireland to Searching for your Irish Roots! This is a must read book if you plan to search for your Irish "cousins" as his methods work!! I have already received 1 letter from a Irish "cousin" and plan to visit the family during my trip the the Emerald Isle this fall! This book helps you plan for your trip, suggestions on where to stay and what to see and as a bonus helps you locate your long lost family memebers. I wish I had read this book before my first trip. I can't wait to read the 3rd edition!
Too many good places omitted.......2001-02-23
Yes, if you have been to Ireland , this book is very user friendly.
However, I find it very predictable and not very adventurous.
McQuillan lumps Southwestern County Cork into 5 or 6 pages. To me ,
that is a terrible dis-service. It is one of the most beautiful and
rugged areas in the island. Farther north, Monaghan and Cavan are
relegated to just a few paragraphs. I've been to both counties and
they really should be given more attention. Anyone who has driven
into Monaghan on a busy afternoon will always remember the closeness
and narrowness of the market town streets before the town center opens
and sets you off in four directions. ...On a
fair measure, he does provide a well rounded list of places to stay
and worthwhile haunts to visit. In that way, yes, it is an adequate
guide book--just like most others on the market that in addition
provide maps and other valuable aids for the beginning traveler.
Good for the traveler returning to Ireland.......2000-02-23
This is a terrific book for the traveler returning to Ireland. It provides more detail for someone who is already familiar with the country, adding sights that may be just off the beaten path a bit.
However, if you are looking for something with maps and pictures to help guide you on your tour of Ireland, you may want to look at some of the more "touristy" books, such as Fodor's or Frommer's. For the less than seasoned traveler "Be a Traveler" would be a good supplement to the basic information found in books of that type.
For the novice traveler, this book may not be the most comfortable to use, but for the seasoned veteran, it is great.
Easy reading and accurate.......1999-01-17
I read Dan's last book, "Open Road's Ireland Guide", before I took a 22 day trip to Ireland. I found it to be easy reading, but more importantly, accurate! I especially enjoyed the short history chapter. You can not find a better description of Irish history in 20 pages anywhere. His latest book, "Ireland Guide : Be a Traveler - Not a Tourist", is even better. I had the opportunity to take it with me on my last trip to Ireland and once again found Dan's suggestions extremely valuable. When your time is valuable don't waste it. A must read for anyone planning to visit Ireland.

Book Description
This comprehensive guide covers all the regions of Ireland--from the raw, rocky coastline of County Cork and the vibrant city of Belfast to the wild mountain scenery of Connacht and the windswept Arran islands. The guide captures the contrasts at the heart of modern Ireland--a place that offers a lively cultural scene and all the luxuries the traveler would expect of a thriving European country, but still retains its wildernesses and romantic charms. The author uncovers the myths, magic, and music of her beloved country with humor and affection. Alongside all the necessary practical information, there are sections on Irish music, the meaning of place names, tracing ancestors, and the legends of the fairy people. Now in its fifth edition, this guide has been updated to include color photographs, the most current listings, extensive touring maps, and the low-down on where to sail, fish, play golf, hunt, and ride.

Covering destinations around the world, these guides are loaded with photos; essays on culture and history, architecture and art; itineraries, walks and excursions; descriptions of sights; and practical information. Fodor's Exploring Ireland gives you great tips on dining and lodging for all budgets as well as tips on basics such as getting there and getting around and when to go and what to pack.
Customer Reviews:
Fodor's Exploring Ireland.......2000-07-15
There are lots of good pictures in this book, including tourist attractions, local people, scenery, events and historic photos. There are many localized maps that show the general area of the sights and events described in the book. There are also good over view maps. Great "focus" sections give detailed information on specific points of interest or significant historic events in Ireland. The Travel Facts section has a comprehensive list of things a traveler might want to know. A seperate accommodation and restraunt section at the end of the book gives recommendations and prices organized by county. The only better Ireland travel guide I have seen is the Eyewitness guide which I would rate about 1/2 star higher.

Book Description
This book binds the timeless observations and invaluable advice of master bladesmith and blade combat expert Bill Bagwell under one cover for the first time. As the outspoken author of Soldier of Fortune's "Battle Blades" column from 1984 to 1988, Bagwell was considered both outrageous and revolutionary in his advocacy of carrying fighting knives as long as 10 inches and his firm belief that the Bowie knife was the most effective and efficient fighting knife ever developed. His assignment as a contributing editor to SOF was to test and evaluate contemporary knives from all over the world, and he soon earned a reputation for cutting to the chase. Candid and frank almost to a fault, he told it like it was - and he could always back it up. Sixteen years after his first column made its debut, Bagwell's convictions on knife design and blade technique have gained validity in the industry, and he has earned the respect of even some of his most vocal critics. This book provides an unprecedented opportunity to study the design and use of Bowies and other big knives and learn which blade designs and combat techniques stand up to both the rigors of battle and the test of time.
Customer Reviews:
Classic.......2007-08-03
A classic by a master blade smith and acknowledged king of Bowie knife makers. For anyone interested in the Bowie and large fighting knives in general, it is a valuable read.
Interesting but blow-hard flawed.......2007-06-17
It is an interesting book. Bagwell's repeated condemnation of knives less than 9 inches long wears pretty thin though. And on this point he doesn't know what he's talking about - there are situations (fighting a large animal,eg,) where a blade longer than 7 inches will rapidly become a liability.
Also his pronouncements on the absence of effective short blade fighting tradition in Japan is just wrong.
And would anyone really choose that U-shaped Chilean military knife over a Kbar in combat???
A Closer Look at the Bowie Knife ~ The Deadliest Knife on Earth. And... much more..........2006-10-22
Bill Bagwell was the author of the `Battle Blades" column in `Soldier of Fortune' magazine from 1983 to 1987. During that time he wrote many articles about a wide variety of knife related topics. In his book "Bowies, Big Knives and The Best of Battle Blades" Mr. Bagwell reprints many of these articles.
Mr. Bagwell begins his book with a closer look at the Bowie knife, which he advocates as the deadliest knife on earth. He advocates carrying a knife of at least 9.25 inches, and in Bowies, Big Knives and The Best of Battle Blades he explains how to effectively carry a large knife in modern society without drawing unwanted attention. (I can personally attest to the effectiveness of Mr. Bagwell's instructions on the use and carry of the Bowie knife, as I have done so for years using the method he suggests.)
Because much of the book is reprints of `Battle Blades' articles we also are treated to Mr. Bagwell's opinion on a number of other knives, such as the K-Bar, saw-toothed blades, daggers, the Kukri, the Japanese tanto knife, throwing stars (shuriken), and the AK bayonet. Mr. Bagwell's opinions on these knives can be controversial, but his opinions are well reasoned in each case ~ whether one agrees with him or not.
While "Bowies, Big Knives and The Best of Battle Blades" gives much insight into the idea and concept of knife fighting, it isn't a manual intended to teach knife fighting techniques. For that Mr. Bagwell recommends the training material produced by James Keating at Comtech, here in Washington State (again a recommendation I can personally attest to having much merit).
If there is any criticism about "Bowies, Big Knives and The Best of Battle Blades" it's that because many of the book's chapters are reprints of the `Battle Blade' articles they are limited in length imposed by a magazine (Soldier of Fortune). Still this is only a very a minor criticism, as the quality of the book as a whole is excellent.
For anyone interested in carrying large knives (especially Bowie knives), "Bowies, Big Knives and The Best of Battle Blades" is worth adding to your personal library.
Bowies, Big Knives...by Bagwell.......2004-02-14
The author dwells too much on knife fighting rather than the knives. I found the book to be a disappointment.
The other reviews are right on.......2004-01-03
The other positive reviews pretty well sum up my thoughts on this text. A must for people who carry a knife with the idea that they may have to use it someday to save their skin. I also recommend Cold Steel by Steyers and Everybody's Knife Bible by Paul. Put together, you will not need any other texts on blade usage.

Book Description
One of Lindy Roy's innovative projects may find you immersed in a floating pool surrounded by lingering crocodiles safely staged behind bars in an inland African river-delta. Or, in another, you might find yourself flying in by helicopter and dropped off at a summit to start a three-hour stimulating snowboarding descent in an Alaskan mountain range. Welcome to the architecture of Roy and her architecture of Risk. Another kind of risk apparent in the architecture of Roy is demonstrated in the research project that Lindy Roy conducted in collaboration with photographer Richard Misrach. In mapping political and socioeconomic structures along the Mississippi River in Louisiana, Roy found that the health-risks caused by pollutants from the pharmaceutical and oil companies along the river make up a site multiple layers of risk. Roy's architecture deals with risk. From pristine nature sites to polluted sites of danger, Roy's work engages us three-fold. Firstly, her design work broadens architecture's relationship with nature. Secondly, Roy defines architecture as a part of an experience economy with changing demands on the architectural profession. Lastly, Roy designs in response to research, offering a model of research-based architecture. In these three ways, Lindy Roy's architecture redefines existing boundaries in architecture practice when engaging risk.
Book Description
Across the nation, legislators and policy makers are dictating the course of literacy education - all in the name of "indisputable scientific evidence." Unchallenged, this research has impacted just about every area of reading instruction. Now, just in time, nationally renowned educational psychologist Gerald Coles enters the discussion, offering the first comprehensive, clearly written critique of the so-called evidence.
This important book examines the studies of leading researchers who have testified in various hearings and promoted policy and legislation on behalf of skills-emphasis learning, especially those financed by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). No other book has systematically and comprehensively analyzed this work. Coles not only identifies each claim, he analyzes the research that backs it up. Chief among them are that:
- Phonemic awareness is the chief causal influence in learning to read.
- Skills-training programs facilitate learning to read and remediate reading problems.
- Research has demonstrated the superiority of skills emphasis over whole language instruction.
- The effectiveness of a widely acclaimed skills-emphasis reading program has been demonstrated in published research.
- A brain "glitch" associated with phonemic awareness is responsible for the reading problems of many children.
At the beginning of each chapter is a summary of the claims and the major criticism of the research discussed in the chapter. These reader-friendly summaries enable you to conceptualize and organize the arguments quickly, and can serve many possible uses - including "talking points," hand-outs, or overheads for presentations.
The publication of Misreading Reading marks a shift in the balance of power and an opportunity to enact early reading policy and legislation based on "good science." Preservice and inservice teachers, teacher educators, administrators, parents, anyone confronted with complex and mystifying claims about the value of direct instruction in reading instruction will benefit from this book.
Customer Reviews:
Can Coles read?.......2003-07-02
I am a school psyc and former reading clinician. I've coordinated summer interventions for three years (K-3). Coles misread the reading panel. He picked only a few studies out of many. The reading panel research is not at narrow as he claims. The NRP attempted to lay out the "anatomy" of how children learn to read and narrowed down the best "types" of programs which tended to be phonics "based." The NRP did compare phonics against whol language and Reading Recovery. Also, most of the researchers from what I can tell WERE former teachers who have moved up to research. Second, assessments did include reading at higher levels than phonemic awareness and decoding. Don't let his rhetoric fool you. Coles is just bitter because is ideology was just not supported. He needs to let go like a true researcher and revise his ideas. Research clearly shows his whole language approach makes reading abilities plumet downward on well designed studies. A generation has been lost to those teachings. I don't think Coles takes the reading problems serious enough. The NRP is a huge project relatively, and the quality of sciency involved is just above Coles. This book only increased my awareness of how uninformed and resistant many educators are.
A Clear Update on the Hottest topics in reading.......2001-08-15
This the second book I have read by Coles and I continued to be impressed by his clarity and incisive thinking. This is a great book for all those who feel so battered about by all the arguements for and against the really topical issues in reading such and phonemic awareness and pathological reasons for reading difficulty to name just a few. Cole's summaries of the most significant research are a Godsend to those who do not have the time or resources to review all the current research themselves. I work as a Literacy Advisor in schools and this book has helped me in my understanding of the issues.
Coles Misreads Reading Research.......2001-07-19
The book should be entitled "misreading reading research." There have been great advances in the past three decades in understanding how better to teach children to read, with much of the work being very good science that decidedly is helping children and has the potential to help many more children if more widely applied. Every page of Coles' book contains at least one assertion that is at a minimum debatable. I gave this a 1-star rating only because zero stars was not an option.
A generation of mis-readers.......2000-10-29
"Research-based" has become code for "direct-instruction", "phonics only", and "NICHD/Reid Lyon-supported". In Coles' important book, this research is carefully and responsibly examined and discredited. A must for everyone who, in good conscience, is standing up to this recent wave of (as Frank Smith has said) reading nonsense.
good counsel.......2000-03-20
Dr Coles' book is a sure guide to the thickets, trials and tribulations of learning to read and teaching to read and helpful counselor for parents and professionals. The writing is straight (with an enlivening dry wit) and will take the reader with certainty to an understanding of what occurs in our schools and of what must be done. And with the understanding comes a how-to knowledge that will help all concerned. Dr Coles gives a comprehensible history of the science and mis-science and practices of reading teaching that will enable advocates to present their cause comprehensibly. It tells one where the "experts", good and bad, are coming from and arms one to encounter them capably. Buy this book: you'll like it and use it!

Patsy Cline's epistolary voice is as warm and direct as the rich alto that throbs through "I Fall to Pieces" and "Crazy." "He told me if I was gonna sing, I wasn't going to live with him," she writes of her soon-to-be-ex-husband, "so I'm back home." Second husband Charlie Dick gets better press: "he is my life, my world, just my everything." But she's not exactly starry-eyed about the joys of childbirth: "those labor hours are living hell ... I was a screaming mess." These letters, written between 1955 and 1959 to a Tennessee teenager who became president of her fan club, chronicle the years of Cline's rise to stardom. "Walkin' After Midnight" was her first big hit, in 1957, but the correspondence ends before songs like "Sweet Dreams" put this country girl on the pop charts. Editors Hazen and Freeman (who own the letters) are the kind of memorabilia collectors who tell you on the book jacket that they "currently live in the house Elvis owned before he bought Graceland," which makes them the perfect people to annotate Cline's casual references to contemporary variety shows and artists with interesting and often obscure information about record companies, television programs, and other pop culture tidbits. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
A must for fans, these rare letters from Patsy Cline reveal a surprising, poignant, and fascinating look inside the heart and soul of a country music legend.
In 1955, Treva Miller Steinbicker, a starstruck girl from East Tennessee, approached an up-and-coming country western singer in the hopes of establishing her fan club. Patsy Cline cheerfully accepted the honor. Over the next four years, through an intimate exchange of letters, she would become Treva's close friend and confidante.
Love Always, Patsy is the collection of that remarkable, cherished correspondence--poignant, colorful, humorous, and genuinely revealing in its honesty and warmth. We meet the aspiring young singer from Winchester, Virginia, excited at the prospects of her burgeoning career--and devastated by its impact on a volatile and demanding marriage. We experience the joy of the birth of her daughter, the strains of stardom, and her loneliness on the road to success, and share in the rewards of a relationship with the one man who would become the love of her life. Above all, these intimate letters reveal the dreams and aspirations, the private heartbreak and the public pressures of an ordinary woman who would become one of the most recognized and beloved names in the history of country music.
Love Always, Patsy is a rare treasure for fans--an intimate self-portrait told in a voice that rings as true, as unique, and as powerful as the music that made Patsy Cline a legend.
* Patsy Cline is a legend, as popular today as ever
* Fully illustrated with many photos of Patsy Cline
* This is the first time the entire collection of letters will be available to the public
* Full reproductions of each letter
Customer Reviews:
"Death can never kill what never dies".......2006-03-16
My title is part of the inscription her husband Charlie had placed on Patsy's grave marker.Time has shown that truer words have never been said.
All the letters in this book were written to Treva Steinbicker who started and operated her fan club. They corresponded very frequently from the time that Patsy started in the business in 1955 when she was was only 23.The letters continued till 1959.There may have been more and Treva probably continued until she was killed in a car accident in 1960;but no letters were found during that period. Patsy met her untimely death in a plane crash on March 5,1963.
More than anything else, these letters show what a huge struggle and sacrifice to health, family and security the artists of the 50's went through in establishing a career. The number of Country Artists ,who made a living, were only a few dozen, and it took many years to make it.However, the music they made came from the heart and soul and was so good because they really lived it.Today new superstars appear like autumn leaves, and in my opinion most of it is "studio" music and that which the Industry promotes. It is hihhly that the stoff promoted today will be enduring like that which we got from the artists of Patsy's time.
Try as they may,to replace Country Music with Pop,Rhinestone Cowboy stuff,Country Rock,New Country,Line Dance music, the music of the Legends like Patsy,Hank Williams,Web Pierce,Johnny Horton,Roy Acuff,Ernest Tubb,Loretta Lynn, and other artists of the 50's and 60's,the real Country music survives because of the simplr fact that Country Music is the music of the people,by the people and for the people---Not the music establishment and studios.
The thing that surprisedme the most is how little these artists were compensated These letters show that during the time Patsy made her greatest hits, she virtually lived in poverty.Just imagine how moch people who couldn't write a simple ditty or even carry a tune, made off Patsy.
A New Patsy Fan!.......2000-09-22
Thank you Mike and Cindy for sharing the personal letters of Patsy Cline with all of us. What better way to get to know someone, then to peek into their letters written to someone very special. Not only are the words that she writes very intimate and from the heart, but the paper they are witten on and the way they are written(phrasing and penmanship) give you insight into Patsy's feelings and personality. Since reading this great book, I have become an REAL Patsy Cline fan.
A real woman.......2000-09-12
If you are looking for a book that tries to analyze Patsy Cline from a woman's perspective, read Margaret Jones' biography. If you want dirt and hack writing, read Ellis Nassour. But if you want to know Patsy Cline, read this book. Patsy wrote it herself with a guiding hand from Mike and Cindy. Patsy tells us in her own words what kind of a woman she is and she shares her dreams and disappointments in a way no other writer can touch.
Mike and Cindy let Patsy tell the story, intruding long enough to clarify a point or identify an obscure reference.
Birth of a star.......2000-09-08
I found, Love Always, Patsy to be quite compelling. I wasn't reading about Patsy Cline the superstar but "Patsy" the young girl working her way up. To be able to do that in her own words left me with a special warmth for the person and all she hoped to achieve. To spend time recapturing a "lost" time in the business of music. A more simple time. I would recommend this book not only to Patsy Cline fans but anyone interested in music, life, biographies, or a hard working housewife.
A Patsy Cline Fan Must Read.......1999-12-31
I am the secretary for the Always Patsy Cline Fan Organization and I have to say, I'm pretty picky about my Patsy Cline merchandise, info., etc.
This book was so interesting to me because you really found out who Patsy was. She struggled just like the rest of us. It blew me away at how tight things were for her. Although times were tough, she kept going to make her dreams come true.
You could really tell how much she loved Charlie and her new daughter, Julie. Randy wasn't born yet.
It was really easy to read and I couldn't put it down. It's a real treasure to have something like this about someone we don't know much about, because of how short of a time she was with us.
If you are in any way a fan of Patsy Cline, this is a must read for you. It also contains a few new photos.
Enjoy!

Rahel Levin Varnhagen (1771–1833) occupied a unique place in German intellectual history. She is known for the salon she initiated in Berlin, which became a center for intellectuals and artists of various social classes—especially for writers of the Romantic and the Young Germany schools. Based on research at the rediscovered Varnhagen Collection, Heidi Thomann Tewarson provides a new and comprehensive portrait of this remarkable woman. No longer primarily the sparkling salonnière, Varhagen is recognized as the author of a unique epistolary oeuvre.
Tewarson gives a rich account of Varnhagen’s intellectual community, made up of such figures as Friedrich and Dorothea Schlegel, Clemens Brentano, Goethe, Hegel, Leopold Ranke, Heine, and the assimilated Jewish community in Berlin. Tewarson also discusses Varnhagen’s writings on women, philosophy, literature, Jews, and a host of other topics. In particular, she highlights Varnhagen’s insights into—and vehement protests against —discrimination against women and Jews. These writings led to Varnhagen’s reputation as a leading intellectual of her era—a champion of literary figures and movements, of human rights, and of Enlightenment values.
