The Economics of Audit Quality focuses on market mechanisms which protect quality in the provision of services by audit firms. By providing a better understanding of these market mechanisms, it helps in defining the content of rules and the function of regulatory bodies in facilitating and strengthening the protective operation of the market.
An analysis at a more general level is provided in the three chapters making up Part 1. In the four chapters of Part 2, on the other hand, this analysis is applied to a particular problem to determine how non-audit services often provided by auditors to their audit clients should be regulated. Finally, Chapter 8 contains a summary of the analysis and conclusions of the work.
The conclusion with regard to non-audit services is that their provision generates beneficial effects in terms of costs, technical competence, professional judgment and competition and, moreover, need not prejudice auditor independence or the quality of these services. This assessment leads, in the normative sphere, to recommending a legislative policy aimed at facilitating the development and use of safeguards provided by the free action of market forces. Regulation should thus aim to enable the parties - audit firms, self-regulatory bodies and audit clients - to discover, through competitive market interaction, both the most efficient mix of services and the corresponding quality safeguards, adjusting for the costs and benefits of each possibility. Particular emphasis is placed on the role played by fee income diversification and the enhancement through disclosure rules of market incentives to diversify.

Sister-Mother: A Protestant Review.......2006-12-23

I am, for better or worse, a Protestant. After praying the rosary for the first time with an ecumenically minded group of friends, I had a great opportunity to discuss with a Catholic friend the notion of praying to Mary and the communion of saints in general. She loaned me this book which, in all honesty, I've read about half of (I just don't have the time to finish it all). Elizabeth Johnson made Mary more accessible to me. That may be precisely the problem for more conservative Roman Catholics. Johnson uses biblical criticism and feminist theory to sift through Mary's portrayal in Scripture as well as in subsequent tradition. If you aren't open to the insights of feminist theory or biblical criticism then this probably isn't the best place to start your engagement with a Catholic Mary. If, however, you want to find a place for Mary in your own life and thought and are ready for some serious thought, read this book.

Mary is truly our sister.......2006-11-04

Sr Johnson does something which I believe to be valuable if not indispensable in understanding and truly appreciating Mary or Miriam of Nazareth, which is to take much of the historical dust she has acquired and reveal the incredible yet humble peasant she was. It truly inspires us as it shows us that despite our mundane life truly God is in our midsts, and if like Mary we open ourselves to God's love and respond with the openness that she did God can truly do wonders through us too. One often ignored part of Mary is her Magnificat when she proclaims God's goodness and challenges the men and women of all generations to proclaim God's love to all, which includes often challenging the injustice found in so many of our structures. It is easier to remain with the Mary found in our homes, made of wood, plaster or whatever else. These though they can serve as reminders of the real Mary, can never substitute for the real 1st century Jewish peasant woman who said Yes to God and lived that Yes throughout her life.

Mariology It Ain't.......2005-08-24

I concur with another reviewer: get Luigi Gambero's "Mary and the Fathers of the Church," and, I might add, his follow-up work, "Mary in the Middle Ages." Read these two books alongside "Truly Our Sister. . .," then decide whether 15 or 16 centuries of organic, historically contiguous development of the Church's Marian doctrine by some of the finest minds and hearts the Church has ever produced--including Bridget of Sweden, or Johnson's glib, 21st century, feminist revisionism provides the better spiritual nourishment.

The Blessed Virgin Mary stirs us to properly love her divine Son, bringing us into the intimate recesses of the Trinitarian love itself! Anything shy of that simply misses the point and leaves one painfully short-changed.

Don't waste your money.......2005-07-08

Try reading Hail Holy Queen by Scott Hahn for starters. This book misrepresents our Blessed Mother. Not sister.

Superb catholic theology.......2005-05-09

This is a superb work of catholic scholarship and reflection. Catholic religious communities are living traditions, not museums, and the way they experience and understand women now is not what it was 500 or 1,000 years ago. Dr. Johnson repeatedly demonstrates that devotion does not require religious people to be blind to change, development, or maturation. Nor does it mean that they should cling to fantasy instead of reality.

The glory of Catholic theological reflection in the past has been its belief (which I share) that if something is not real, it can't be sacred. This book pursues the reality of what it must have meant to be Mary, and what Mary means now, with reverence and grace.

It is silly to imagine that true catholic, orthodox, or christian reverence regarding Mary's unique place in the communion of saints requires us to pretend that nothing of any note has happened in human history over the past 500 years. That does not seem to be the sort of thing that Mary herself would recommend or countenance.

It gave me a better insight of this strong and determined man. From his home town of Philadelphia to the his ups and downs of living in one of the most richest and prestigous towns in southern California. I recommend the book to anyone who love autobiographies. (as told directly by the person and not someone else)

GOD BLESS MUSIC LEGEND TEDDY PENDERGRASS.......2005-03-30

Ok lemme start that I didn't purchase it nor bought it nowhere at a bookstore or whatever. I just checked this out at a library and was pretty amazed about this story that Teddy P put out. It shows all the sides from the ups and down between the life and times of his career. I'm such a huge fan to his music and always will be. I just read a few parts of the book but didn't had time to read the rest. I may get it used off from Amazon or get it cheap at a used bookstore or so. Long story short, this is a book I must have if I wanna learn more from this man. For all you hardcore or diehard fans who are real to Teddy, must get this or else check it out at a local library. That's how I did it. Well congratulations to Teddy Pendergrass for putting out a a wonderful book and look forward for the 2nd memoir to come out. Y'know where he's heading to the new millenium now. Definitely a must.

...whose hand is that cradling teddy's face?..........2002-06-14

...just curious...maybe (hopefully) it's his wife's hand...what an INCREDIBLE woman she is...perhaps the most impressive person in his autobiography, aside from his mother. Just finished reading this book yesterday...after staring at the cover for a while (yeah...like it was gon MOVE or somethin'...or like he was gon actually BLINK!)...the cover alone can capture you --- especially if, like me, you are a true Teddy fan. I think I just recently evolved into one, however...it's like his music is f.g.f.o. (for grown folks only), and I just recently grew up...hey, what can I say? It took me til my thirties to really appreciate where this man is coming from.
...so of course I had to pick up the book...there was no me getting away from it, or it getting away from me. Admittedly, it's probably the best autobiography I've read in a while, written in straight forward language and sprinkled with humor. Some of what he shares is surprising, some of it not so surprising, but all of it is revealing, and I know it took a lot for him to share all that he did of himself, and I really appreciate that. I had just turned 13 the same month he had the car accident that left him a quadriplegic (sp?), and I remember well all the speculations and the news reports. Though I was young, I remember how much his accident really impacted me. I think in a way, reading this book, I grieved his loss all over again...(I was in such a sad mood all day yesterday...just couldn't seem to shake it)... after all, he is telling his own story here...no more speculations or rumors...just his words. I hurt that he --- or anyone --- would have to go through such a painful ordeal. As for anyone, my only hope and prayer is that he's grown through it, and has become, or is becoming, more of the person God wants him to be. I can only imagine, though, the limitations those who are physically challenged must face, and reading this book has given me a new appreciation for that, for which I'm thankful. I think there are so many things that we all take for granted day in and day out. Hopefully, we will open our eyes to see how Truly Blessed we all are, too...just as much as Teddy is.

A Must Read for All Hardcare Teddy Pendergrass Fans.......2002-02-28

...I have been listening to Teddy Pendergrass since his days with Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes (my father and I have copies of their 1975 LP "Wake Up Everybody" - he the LP, me the CD)and his earlier solo singles (among them, "Close the Door", "Only You" and "You Can't Hide from Yourself") are pure classics - just one example of the pure, raw, unadulterated soul music that was pumping out out of Gamble and Huff's PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL RECORDS headquartered in Philadelphia. When I heard about his near fatal car crash in early 1982 and the fact that he had no movement from the neck down, my heart sanked - will Teddy Pendergrass ever be able to share his rare amazing gift of singing again? Sad to say, his albums since then does not capture the rawness that his prior recordings did (the lone exception, his 1997 CD "You and I", my review of which you will see in AMAZON.COM's music section). Although his music was a treat to the ears for me, like so many of his fans, I had a lot of misconceptions of Teddy Pendergrass; to wit, his playboy life, lavish lifestyle and his children bore out of wedlock. However, I had the opportunity during Labor Day weekend in September, 1999 to visit The City of Brotherly Love and picked up this book. This book dispells all of the misconceptions and, in the process, shows the tender side of Teddy Pendergrass, the man and the human being - from his humble beginnings in North Philadelphia, his earlier, struggling days with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, his devotion to his mother, his wife, Karen, and, most remarkably, his three children to the car crash and his daily struggles as a quadraplegic. To my fellow Teddy Pendergrass fans: ignore the image, pick up this book and read it from cover to cover. You will NOT be disappointed.

This book is for die hard Teddy P fans. The story is o.k., but unless you are a true Teddy fan, don't waste your time.
