In June of 1881, on the very night of their wedding in Searsport, Maine, Captain Lincoln Alden Colcord and his new wife, Jane Sweetser Colcord, departed for sea to begin a two-year voyage on the bark CHARLOTTE A. LITTLEFIELD. The voyage would take them around the world and witness the birth of their daughter Joanna amid the South Sea Islands and young Lincoln's arrival during a treacherous winter storm off Cape Horn.

Fifth-generation seafarers, Joanna and Lincoln Colcord spent their youth at sea aboard their father's ships. the Colcord's richly detailed journal-letters to family members ashore, their logbooks, photographs, and later correspondence give us a splendid window into the life of a seafaring family. Nesdall, puts their story in perspective, explaining the rade and customs during those waning days of working sail at the turn of the century, yet the letters themselves are surprisingly contemporary as the family shares its joys and concerns, curiosity about new places, adventures, and growing pains.

From New York to Yokohama to Valparaiso to Singapore to Durban to Hong Kong, we share their exhilaration when things go well yet are ever conscious of the uncertainties of sea life: illness, the threat of typhoons and dismastings, wrecks, and financial disaster. Letters from the Sea takes the reader back to the turn of the century and lets them peak into the unique life of a sea captain and his family. Not only do the letters tell us of the trials and tribulations of being away from home and friends, they let us look into the warm relationship this family shared, despite being apart for years at a time.

Parker Albee uses the treasure trove of actual letters from the Colcord's along with the Joanna's and Linc's later writings to put us on the deck of the State of Maine during a storm, socializing with other families in Hong Kong Harbor and waiting in Searsport for the family to come home. It is a wonderful story of the sea and of family.

A few years ago, Americans held out their systems of corporate governance and financial disclosure as models to be emulated by the rest of the world. But in late 2001 U.S. policymakers and corporate leaders found themselves facing the largest corporate accounting scandals in American history. The spectacular collapses of Enron and Worldcom—as well as the discovery of accounting irregularities at other large U.S. companies—seemed to call into question the efficacy of the entire system of corporate governance in the United States.

In response, Congress quickly enacted a comprehensive package of reform measures in what has come to be known as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. The New York Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ followed by making fundamental changes to their listing requirements. The private sector acted as well. Accounting firms—watching in horror as one of their largest, Arthur Andersen, collapsed after a criminal conviction for document shredding—tightened their auditing procedures. Stock analysts and ratings agencies, hit hard by a series of disclosures about their failings, changed their practices as well.

Will these reforms be enough? Are some counterproductive? Are other shortcomings in the disclosure system still in need of correction?

These are among the questions that George Benston, Michael Bromwich, Robert E. Litan, and Alfred Wagenhofer address in Following the Money. While the authors agree that the U.S. system of corporate disclosure and governance is in need of change, they are concerned that policymakers may be overreacting in some areas and taking actions in others that may prove to be ineffective or even counterproductive.

Using the Enron case as a point of departure, the authors argue that the major problem lies not in the accounting and auditing standards themselves, but in the system of enforcing those standards. Rather than attempting to craft a single set of accounting and reporting standards for all companies throughout the world, the authors advise policymakers to allow competition between the two major sets of standards: Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and International Financial Reporting Standards.

The authors also believe that the corporate disclosure system needs to be updated to reflect changes in the underlying economy. In particular, they recommend new forms of disclosure for a variety of nonfinancial indicators to better enable investors and analysts to ascertain the source and nature of intangible assets. They also urge policymakers to exploit the advantages of the Internet by encouraging more frequent financial disclosures in a form that will make them more widely accessible and more easily used.

Incredible historical document.......2007-09-24

Von Steuben's drill manual is of extrordinary importance for several reasons.

At the shallowest level, it is a primary source for Revolutionary War and War of 1812 reenactors. For 34 years, (1778-1812) this was THE book for the U.S. Army, so any reenactor interested in this period should start here.

Pertaining to the history of the U.S. Army, this was the first manual, the first set of standards in place in the army. The first of anything sets the tone for later developments, and any serious research about the U.S. Army or Army doctrine should start here.

As an enduring framework, the "Instructions" section is still echoed in U.S. Army leadership doctrine. The roles, responsibilities, and relationships of officers and non-commissioned officers haven't changed that much, especially when compared to the changes in tactics and technology in the intervening centuries. A regimental commander's "first and greatest care" should be "the preservation of the soldiers health", "A captain cannot be too careful of the company the state has committed to his charge", "the discipline and order of a company" depend upon the non-commissioned officers. All these ideas ring true whether the army was outfited with flintlocks or thermal-sighted gas-operated selective fire rifles. This continuity is of tremendous value to the spirit of a successful army.

This manual was also the instrument of a military transformation for the U.S. Army. Von Steuben arrived at the Continental Army's encampment, and popular legend in the U.S. Army is that he was so shocked by the lack of discipline and disorder that he sat down and wrote the first copy of this manual that very night. This is not true, as mentioned in the publisher's note, but by bringing military discipline to the Continental Army, a bunch of farmers and store clerks were able to turn the tides and defeat the premier ground forces of the era. Again, a significant event in the history of military science as well as American history.

As a fencer, I was a little disappointed. Although in the first chapter it mentions that officers and NCOs are to be armed with swords, there is no further mention of the use of swords. Other than this one shortcoming, this was a very enlightening book about the period, and is an influential manual with continuing significance to military science and U.S. Army history.

Excellent tool for understanding focused discipline.......2007-02-06

I bought this book for the sole purpose of reviewing discipline in military organizations. Being an AF First Sergeant, it re-focused and validated many of the methods still used today. An excellent way to see how history can be a valuable tool in teaching and leading.
The only down side is the dry reading. The english language has progressed leaps and bounds since the Revolutionary War.

I was surprised and disappointed in the review from Ms.Springer.
It is one thing to dislike someone's work ,it is another to feel the need to be mean spirited about it.One thing is clear when it comes to bullying-we all need to be kinder and caring toward one another.Unfortunately the reviewer didn't gleam that from the book.

I found this book to be very helpful.It addresses all aspects of bullying.As a parent of a victim ,I came away with specific strategies I can use.Plus it gave me ways I can work with my school.I now know what I can do as a parent and how I can get my school involved,It was great!

A Disappointment.......2001-01-11

My daughter is currently having problems with a bully in her class. I bought this book hoping it would give me some guidance on how to handle the situation e.g. call the bullies parents, talk to the school counselor, or let my daughter develop her own style of defense and just help by coaching her.

The book gave me nothing to work with in dealing with bullies. The book's focus is Macro (The big picture) how to start school programs, how bulling hurts society, etc. What I wanted (and thought I was getting) was some basic techniques that are used to help victims e.g. quick verbal come-backs, does using humor work better, whether the bullies parents should be involved (what studies have shown), does mediation help?; What is the most diplomatic way to handle the situation so that both children can still feel comfortable in class together? Should peers be called in to help defuse the situation? None of these questions were answered satisfactorily.

This book may have uses for those seeking social change, but for a parent who is looking for the best way to help their individual child that can end the problem quickly, as in a few days--not weeks or months of documentation and advocating for services, this book is a disappointment.

Help for parents and children.......2000-01-13

I found the book to be a clear and practicle guide to understanding bullies. As a professional in the field I've already shared it with parents who were looking for help in this area. Of particular importance is the authors' focus on the links between home-school and parent-child behaviors. The book's easy to read format addresses issues of idetntifying signs of bullying, victimization and most importantly, what can be done by parents and school administrators. I highly recommend this book.

Suppose you are a playwright who co-authored a little something called "A Chorus Line"? And just suppose you managed to sign theatrical legends Mary Martin and Carol Channing for your latest play, appropriately called "Legends!"? What could possibly go wrong? Grab this book, and boy, will you find out! For example, Mary Martin could no longer remember lines, so she was fitted with a small radio headset so she could be "fed" her lines. But seemingly every taxi driver in the city was on the same frequency... Hilarious, tragic-a true classic, right up there with "Act One" by Moss Hart.

Hilarious yet often sad true tale of the author's incredibly frustrating run of his stage play Legends, starring two honest-to-goodness stage divas Carol Channing and Mary Martin, who in real life gave their stage characters more than a run for their money. Greedy producers, bickering stars, hostile reviewers, backstage manipulations, it's all here, presented in good humor by Kirkwood, a vastly unsung writer, unfortunately long since deceased. This was his final book. A good read in itself, and sure to provoke laughter and empathy from anyone who has been involved in theatre.

Howard Jacobson is Jewish, of Lithuanian extraction and was born in Manchester. This book looks hard at Jewishness and takes us all over the world in search of what it means. I really wish he'd spent more time looking what part Manchester played in developing his sense of who he is and where he came from.

Question: There's lots of talk about Yiddish, what part did native languages play in the various countries Jews settled in?

Lighten Up, Why Don't You?.......2001-03-04

Roots, Schmoots: Journeys Among Jews is, first of all, funny. One should not come to it expecting to read a balanced, well-researched history/sociology of Judaism, Israel or the Diaspora. Think more along the lines of taking a long, relaxed (but neurotic as all get-out) trip with a very funny man in search of something even he can't quite identify.The chapters describing his time in the US are hilarious and poignant at once. The chapters on Israel are quite well done, capturing the author's exasperated love for the nation and its people, and his often wayward search for justice. Jacobson tries to avoid sentiment at all costs, yet continually finds himself caught up short by a lump in the throat. A very good, very funny travel book. A very good, very funny story of one person's hunt for himself. Not for the compulsively or competitively serious.

Enlightening.......2000-02-16

No hatred in this book, although plenty in the remarks of two of the on-line reviewers who are like bit part players in the book itself. Jacobson is erudite, fair, modest, compassionate and compelling. He doesn't pretend to be writing an academic investigation, more a personal journey, and he has the decency to admit that it's an inconclusive one. There is, of course, no point in spending time and money on a book like this if you lack learning and humour, of if you believe that on matters of religion and identity you already have all the answers.

Identity crisis.......1999-10-05

Mr. Jacobson suffers from a deep-rooted identity crisis and his book could be of some use for anyone who is interested in this sort of behavior pattern. In terms of literary value "Roots Schoots" lacks intellectual depth. Mr. Jacobson is full of hate, prejudice, and uses irony, skepticism, and in many instances disrespect for the values imbedded in Jewish culture. He needs to solve his own dilemma first, free himself from whatever traumas he might have and then repeat his journey with a more open mind. Only then will he be able to judge "jewishness!"

Where does the man get the nerve?

Can you imagine going into a country for the first time and forming an opinion of its religion, people, customs, culture and esthetics by conversations with street people, going to hangouts of the marginal in Israeli society and staying at the tackiest of hotels?

As an Israeli citizen, born and raised in New York, with a healthy dose of NY culture and esthetics, I really took umbrage - did the man really find no beautiful buildings (the new Supreme Court building is georgeous, just to name one), no lovely hotels (too bad he couldn't afford the Laromme, the Dan Pearl or the new Hilton)or pretty residential areas (like the lovely old, landscaped Talbeya)?

As for cultured people, why couldn't the man get thru the front door to interview Amos Oz, Yehuda Amichai or a dozen other cultured, pluristic, highly intelligent fellow authors?

I notice that he changed the cover of his book - good, because his face on the old one wasn't too esthetically pleasing. Maybe the negative things he felt about Israel were just manifestations of the negative things he finds about himself.

Get some therapy soon, Mr. Jacobson.
