Mohammad Daoud, Personality, Ideas and Policies: A Study in Contemporary Afghan History (In Persian)

Although nobody denies the fundamental role of Daoud in Afghanistan's contemporary history, there is no book entirely dedicated to the study of this important and controversial Afghan political figure. This work is a contribution towards partially filling that gap.

In his study, Dr. Assem Akram, carefully reviews and analyses facts and elements, relying on a variety of sources. These include the invaluable testimonies of people who worked with Daoud, those who knew him personally and others who were closely related to him. Though Daoud is the focus of this study, one can nevertheless see at the same time forty years of contemporary Afghan history reviewed and laid out. The book contains pictures, a very helpful chronology and many appendices.

Daoud became Prime Minister in 1953. At the height of the Cold War, deeply disturbed by the underdeveloped state of his country, he strove and succeeded in having both blocks, East and West, cooperate in Afghanistan's economical development.

Ambitious and nationalistic, his firm stand on the Pashtunistan issue and his somewhat authoritarian methods of government created rifts within the ruling strata as well as within the royal family itself. Daoud left power in 1963. Thereafter, under King Zaher Shah's stewardship, the country adopted a new constitution, which prevented members of the Royal family from taking over high offices such as Prime-Minister, Minister, member of the parliament, etc. Daoud, a first cousin and brother-in-law of the King, resented the law and viewed it as being directed against him personally. He remained outside the official arena for a decade, frustrated and angry, waiting for his hour to come.

On July 17th 1973, with the help of a group of young army officers -some of them leftists and others nationalists- Daoud perpetrated a bloodless coup d'Etat, abolishing the Monarchy and installing a Republican regime. His Republic, which brought in many changes in a short span of time, was a short-lived one. In April 1978, self-proclaimed `progressive' and communist elements, with the consent of Moscow, joined hands and overthrew Daoud in a bloody coup, killing most of his family members during the final assault. The communist take-over and subsequent Soviet invasion threw Afghanistan into the international spotlight and transformed the country into a regional center of competition between arch-rival blocks that led eventually to the defeat and the dismemberment of the Soviet Empire. To fully comprehend the chain of events in which Afghanistan still struggles in a seemingly endless war, it appears essential to learn more about the critical period preceding the ongoing tragedy.

Whether people judge his balance to be positive or negative, he was a man of tremendous determination and also of fascinating paradoxes. He flirted with the Soviets but was not a Communist. He gave women the right to abandon the tchadari and promoted their rights, but never appointed any at a highly visible position. He was a true faithful practicing Muslim, but opposed religious groups' influence on society. He fought for the Pashtun revival and nationalism, but would not segregate on ethnicity for key appointments. Last but not least, he was a King's first cousin and could have proclaimed himself Shah when he took over, but instead he abolished monarchy, putting an end to almost 250 years of Afghanistan being ruled by members of a same clan, a clan to which he belonged…

Indeed, one cannot fully comprehend recent Afghan history without knowing Daoud, whose character and ideas contributed to shape Afghanistan's domestic and foreign policies for almost half a century.

Dr. Coote makes no attempt to conceal his virulent hatred of England, Queen Elizabeth I, Protestantism and Sir Francis Drake. He blithely skips over or ignores Drakes' triumphs and accomplishments, while expounding ad nauseum on Drake's minor foibles. Coote's obvious admiration for 16th century Spain, King Philip II and Catholicism is apparent, casting this despicable cabal as sympathetic; as if they were mere victims of unfortunate circumstance and the horrid depredations of Drake and the Protestant English. I removed the surprisingly commendable illustrations and threw the rest of the book in the garbage.

History novel and perfect prose all in one.......2006-07-22

Yes many books have been written about Sir Francis Drake the gentleman pirate, but here Mr. Coote blends them all together in a delightful creation of his, which not only details his adventures and crimes in a very objective while simultaneously engaging manner. It also disperses many myths about the nature of his relation with Elizabeth and even more, how his political knack and careful administration of his public persona managed to turn him into a National Hero, while hiding from view that his motivation for all its enduring quests was always the same, greed.

Performance audit, as practised by national audit offices, is a relatively recent and rapidly developing set of activities. Auditors claim to have moved beyond issues of compliance and regularity and to be able directly to investigate the efficiency and effectiveness of public programmes, projects, and institutions. These are developments with considerable implications for both democratic accountablility and managerial efficiency. Until now they have received little independent scrutiny, but in this book an international team of researchers analyses the growth of performance audit in five countries: France, Finland, The Netherlands, Sweden, and the UK. It is argued that audit offices face a series of strategic choices, and that in different countries they have thus far chosen somewhat different trajectories.

This is the sewing book that you're looking for!.......2007-06-26

IF, that is, you're looking for a book that goes into further detail than the standard beginner's sewing book. My mother, who taught Beginner's and Advanced sewing for decades (after earning a full four year scholarship to the Art Institute of Chicago for her sewing skills out of high school), told me that this was a book that she recommended to her advanced (high school) sewing classes, so it may not be the easiest book to just flip through and use off the cuff, but it definitely is an extensive book that brings in not just the craft of sewing, but the actual art of it - something that I, as an artist and art teacher, find to be very important. And my mom just couldn't say enough about what an excellent sewing resource this book is.

My first sewing book was The Complete Book of Sewing New Edition, which IS great for visual references on what the tasks you're undertaking should look like throughout the process, but I found it to be very bare bones when it came to answering my "okay, sooo, WHY am I doing this again, instead of doing that???" type questions. "Vogue Sewing" answers all of those questions for me, as well as offering very helpful hints on how to properly tailor a garment to your specific figural requirements, how to remove specific stains, why to use one fabric over another, what the differences are between a variety of fabrics.... and I got all of this from simply skimming through the book! Yes, this book may guide you towards using Vogue patterns, but considering that that company's name figures VERY prominently in the title, it should be pretty obvious that this book isn't necessarily going to steer you towards using Simplicity or Butterick patterns, especially since I doubt that they have easy access to the copyrights that would allow them to reference those companies' patterns. If that doesn't bother you (it sure doesn't bother me), this book isn't just worth a look, it's worth the full cover price, let alone the discounted price you'll find it for here on Amazon!

Again, if you want a book that's going to ease you into the world of sewing by holding your hand and helping you take baby steps (something we ALL can use at the beginning of anything new), you're probably better off with The Complete Book of Sewing New Edition, as a starting point. BUT, if you're looking for a book that will take about as much deciphering as a standard pattern's guide sheet, but offer a great wealth more information about why you're doing what you're doing, and everything you could think of in between, this is DEFINITELY the book you want to buy! Heck, you could just do what I did, and buy 'em both! If, however, you only intend to buy one sewing book in the near future, and you want something that will take a little more investment (of time and thought), and give you a MUCH bigger return in knowledge and experience, buy this one first!

I bought this book when I began sewing and it became quite useful when I ran into little hiccups on technique. Yes, it does push more of a couture apporoach to sewing, but I found the information to be quite informative.

One thing I really didn't like about this book is that it tries to get the reader to buy Vogue patterns, and talks only about how to alter them, but does NOT mention how to make patterns from scratch yourself. Just another marketing trick to increase sales of their patterns. Although it does have some other practical info on sewing.

Not Stiff Enough.......2006-12-16

Most books on the how-to of sewing are content to show the reader how to sew a seam, insert a zipper, set a sleeve, fix a rip, use iron-on interfacing, and tack a hem. This work persuades the reader to look beyond the mechanics of sewing and think in terms of fashion. For example, fabric textures, ease in wear, the overall silouette of the wearer, and color can make a garment so-so or totally unique. Better still, the home sewer is encouraged to pursue the fantastic opportunity to create one-of-a-kind clothing item to make heads turn.

The reviewer has assigned a three-star rating because this is a fairly big 450 page softbound manual that becomes a bit unwieldy in use.

I love this book.......2006-11-19

I really like this book because it goes into advanced alterations which is what a lot of other sewing books lack. I was surprised to find out that it has that as a section, being that this is a general sewing book. But it's more than that, there's also couture sewing techniques and a section on how important color is, and guidance on choosing the right colors. That's also something I have a hard time with.

WHAT ABOUT THE GOLD COAST.......2006-03-26

I have read many of these AIA Guides and I normally love them, but this one is a huge disappointment, honestly it is the worst I have come across. The buildings chosen are bewildering, I mean how many hideous 50's style buildings does Long Island have? When I think of Long Island architecture I think of Oheka or Planting Fields or Old Westbury, the grand Gilded Age mansions so beautifully described in Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, not some tract home in Levittown. I really would not recommend this book to anyone, the American Institute of Architects should be ashamed of this incomplete, lazy guide, they are so much better at these kind of books, if you want a great AIA guide, look at the one on Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, New York, and Detroit, now those are great guides to be proud of, it really makes you wonder about the quality of architects on Long Island..frankly their idea of what constitutes architecture worthy of being in an AIA guide is just totally perplexing.

Beautiful but Disappointing.......1999-07-04

This is an attractive and useful book and worth the price.

However, for those hoping to get anything even vaguely approaching the detailed and absorbing AIA Guide to New York, which meticulously notes even fairly minor old buildings, be ready for disappointment. This is more akin to a tourist picture book than the AIA's New York City effort.

As a therapist who is new to art therapy I found this a very helpful overview of how various modalities might be used with different populations. She provides a clear rationale for using each medium with each patient and gives directions for setting the stage and working through the process of each exercise.

POLISH BIG BAND.......2004-07-20

Ethnic music was big business from the dawn of recording through the 1950s, and the polka bands of Polish-American communities represented a vibrant mix of Horatio Alger pull-yourself-up-by-the-bootstraps, self-taught musicians who knew their art, and old-fashioned ethnic pride. For those brave enough to broach the narrow parameters defined by a politically correct "multiculturalism," this book can be a real insight into just how successful one ethnic community was.
