In the past sheep-rearing was the main means of existence for most Bedouin. Today it is developing in a new direction. For some it is as important as ever, for others it has become only a subsidiary source of income and a safeguard against economic instability. This volume looks at the effects social, political and economic change has had upon the traditional livelihood of the Negev Bedouin. The author considers how, despite all the problems encountered - such as the expropriation of land by the authorities and the demolition of authorized dwellings - sheep-rearing is still considered to be essential and worthwhile for almost all households. Co-operation between the owners of flocks, shepherds, food suppliers and government officials is essential in the determination of grazing areas and pastoral arrangements. These varied interest groups ensure that sheep-rearing continues to occupy an important place in the Bedouin's cultural identity and the flock remains a unifying factor for the Bedouin family and Israeli society.

Custer and Company presents information on Sergeant John Henley, veteran trooper of the Seventh Cavalry, and a number of other Seventh Cavalrymen and frontiersmen, including interpreter Sam Bruguier; Camp’s research on various unsettled questions of the Little Bighorn fight; interviews with several surviving Indians and famed scout Luther North; and extensive information on the death of Crazy Horse.

Camp’s investigations illuminate several important questions that have dogged Custer research for generations.

Caution: misleading title!.......2002-05-14

This book has a misleading title. This is a small short book, and only a part of it is actually about the Little Bighorn (LBH) fight. Other parts of the book are interviews Camp conducted concerning the Yellowstone expedition, the Little Bighorn aftermath, the death of Crazy Horse, the Powder River expedition, and the Battle of Summit Springs. Do not buy this if you expect Walter Camp's complete notes on the Custer fight. Get Kenneth Hammer's "Custer in 76" if you want a far more complete set of LBH interviews strictly concerned with that subject. This book contains some of Camp's notes not included in Hammer's book.

This book is recommended however for its extensive highly informative footnotes. There are very nearly more footnotes than text, and therein is a wealth of information about the people and events in the 1866-78 era.

A big ( ).......2000-06-14

This has to be the worst book I have read so far on Custer andthe Little Big Horn Battle. Big print, wide margins make this book inmy mind a money grab. Thirty pages of preface and introduction and 11 blank pages help to fill out this book. This book does have some interesting points but all in all I found it very disapointing. They must have laughed they way to bank with this one. END

A superb and accurate account of the Little Big Horn events.......2000-03-23

One of the finest accounts of the Custer fight. I would recommend this book over most of the others. Mr. Camp sought out survivors and interviewed them, he sheds some fresh light on many of the confusing issues. And he details some very interesting items of the actual fight itself. Excellent and has a place of honor on my book shelf. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.

Interviews Add New Light on Several Topics.......2000-01-08

Reading Camp's intervies makes you wish he had a chance to write the definitive book on Custer and the LBH. The accounts are a little rambling because they are based on Camp's original notes. The interviews highlight conflicts between some of the notable but challengable LBH testimonies. The interviews also reveal information about the retreat from Weir Point, the mystery rider in C Company found miles from the battlefield on the Rosebud, first hand accounts of the death of Crazy Horse, information on "White hat" (Lt. Phillo Clark) and a virtual biography on Luther North who demonstrated great success utilizing Pawnee tribesmen as soildiers and scouts. The footnotes provided by the editors provide a terrific resource of information that more than adds to the Camp's notes, almost like having two books in one.

From quantum to cosmic with John Gribbin.......2000-06-25

Despite the Amazon listing, this book is about the "Big Bang," not "Big Bands." Far more comprehensive and understandable than "A Brief History of Time," Gribbin's effort trys to show how the Big Bang theory could result in today's universe. On the way he gives you an overview of astronomy, physics -- including particle physics -- cosmology, chemestry and history. The sections that tell how man has perceived and measured the universe are wonderful, as are his explanation of how the heavy elements resulted from the Big Bang. He manages to leave out the math, and I can truly say that as I'm reading it, I understand particle physics, though I forget most of it within a couple of days. The new version does not look nearly as ambitious. I've given all of my copies away, so hang on to yours.

Superficial coverage of important concepts.......2000-06-21

I would recommend any avid reader of cosmology not to buy this book. Since I think there are lots of other better books on this topic. The first problem with the book is that it virtually wastes three chapters (chapters 2,3 and 4) with issues like how to measure distances to stars and galaxies, which any avid reader on cosmology is always conversant with. The author's coverage of the Big Bang Standard Model is quite good. It gives a reasonable idea about the two rival theories about the origin of the universe as well as concepts like neucleosynthesis of matter. The major blunder of this book is its coverage of the Inflation Theory, which I found to be very very superficial. The number of lines used to describe how the Inflation Theory explains the Horizon Problem and the Flatness problem, are less than the number of lines in the problem statements themselves. Any modern book that deals with the creation of the universe must emphasize a lot on the latest theory about it and the Inflation theory did not get its due in this book. The author gives a good idea about the significance of the dark matter in the universe and what it could constitute of. But once again his explanation of concepts like the CPT symmetry is very very superficial.

This book is very good indeed. It has lots of little known facts even to the die hard fan. I only wish it had more pictures, although the ones that it has are excellent. It is far better than Anthology, buy this instead! Also check the other book by this author, The Beatles after the break up.
