Great Book- but it's missing something!.......2000-07-14

I am just getting back into collecting Madame Alexander dolls. I have been collecting Barbie for the last 10 years and had a MA collection which I sold about 2 years ago. I think this is a great book with an extensive list of dolls. The only thing keeping it from getting 5 Stars is that there are not that many style numbers. For instance, there are so many Spain & Mexico dolls, I can't really tell which I have, by looking at this book. Maybe the next book, he'll list style numbers. Otherwise, I think it's great.

One of the BEST books on Madame Alexander dolls.......2000-04-13

If you're interested in Madame Alexander Dolls then this book is a MUST HAVE. It's organized and easy to read. It's a book for the beginner or the long time collector it's that good. I would highly recommend this book.

Terrific for beginners.......2004-07-08

As a knitter of only 6 months, I found The Weekend Crafter to be very easy to follow and encouraging of personal creativity. Once you know how to do the basics: knit, purl, increase, decrease and weave in ends, you can easily complete any of the projects in this book and add your own flair if you so choose. My only complaint is that Ms. Ham only put 20 patterns in the book. Most of them are very nice and I wish there were more.

Great Book for Projects for Beginners!.......2004-05-14

This is a great book for people who are tired of technical beginning knit books like me. I don't need to review how to knit, purl, increase and decrease in every book on knitting that I have. If I need to review the basics I get out my Vogue the Ultimate Knitting Guide and refer to it. I want a book with projects that I can do in short amounts of time at an easy level but are motivating. This book meets my needs well.

Not truly for beginners.......2004-02-22

This is a fine book, with interesting patterns, but based on the spotty lack of information on basic knitting, it really does not function well for beginners. For instance, there is absolutely no written indication on how to weave in the ends (there are better and worse techniques) although one can try to figure it out based on the photos. A beginner should be given this kind of instruction in a detailed, written form in case this is their first attempt. I bought the book planning on giving it to a friend who is just learning to knit, and decided that it wouldn't work for that purpose.

The issue discussed by previous reviewers regarding the notes on knitting the first and last stitches in each row are a fine example. The Cravat-Style Scarf contains instructions that start out telling the knitter to work in k2,p2 ribbing over 24 stitches (thus ending with a p2), then adds a note to knit the first and last stitches in each row. As an advanced knitter, it is easy enough to interpret the intent behind the note, and adjust the stated pattern accordingly. However, it is easy to forget that beginners need much more clear, detailed guidance. Why not print out the full pattern (it would have taken fewer rows of type) to indicate that the pattern should end in k2,p1,k1, and that each row will be the same until you reach the buttonhole, and again, after the buttonhole?

My rating for this book is based on the indication that it is for beginners, when it clearly was written by an expert who has forgotten what it's like to be a beginning knitter. The patterns themselves are fairly simple, however, the communication of them tends towards the intermediate or practiced knitter. If you're an adventurous beginning knitter, or a natural who likes to make up their own patterns and solutions to pattern interpretation, you will probably enjoy this book, as much as I, an experienced knitter, do. The photos are great, and there are some interesting and fun patterns.

The Best Instructions.......2004-02-06

I think the previous reviewer must have misread the instructions, as beginners in any field sometimes do. The NOTE in the highlighted box clearly says to knit the first stitch, as well as to knit the last stitch of each row to make a very nice selvedge on your scarf. Put another way, sometimes you begin a row by knitting the first stitch and purling the next three; sometimes you end a row by purling three stitches and knitting one. This keeps the pattern correct. Another possibility is to ignore the NOTE and simply knit and purl the stitches exactly as they present themselves. Then you will have slightly wavy edges to your scarf. It really doesn't matter, but in either case the number of stitches you cast on is still going to be 28.

At least one pattern has errors..........2003-04-14

I'm a beginning knitter, but voracious, and I loved the look and promise of this book when I found it at the bookstore.

After reading and working with it for the past couple of weeks, my two complaints are these: not all projects include information about yarn. Some of the projects list a specific yarn, some suggest possible substitutions, some just suggest using "Aran" yarn. I think beginners, like me, need more guidance, and the specifics of what yarn was used in the photographed projects should always be provided.

But far more serious was the misinformation in a pattern's directions (for the "classic man's scarf"). I followed the directions carefully but felt something was amiss from the start. After hours of knitting, I checked in with the experts at my local knitting store who deciphered the instructions. I ended up having to rip it all out and start again. (For anyone about to start this project: cast on *30* stitches, not 28; then you'll be able to knit the first and last stitch of every row as instructed and still follow the pattern directions!)

I haven't tried any of the other patterns in the book yet, but I will definitely try to have someone experienced review the pattern directions before I begin.

Caveat emptor!

This book, You Can Be the Happy Mom of an Empty Nest, is the best I have found on the spiritual aspects of how people "grow up" from worshiping their parents to worshiping the Lord and becoming fully adult as Christians. Understanding this process helps us to grow spiritually ourselves and it helps us to not inadvertently interfere with this growth in our children.
