I am quite disappointed with this book. If I have read it in a book store (instead of mail order) I would not have bought it. It is bacially a book with only pictures and the prices. It does not even include the price of those that are not pictured. The pictures are not great either, some ivory pieces look like they are green!! The listing is not complete and in my own opinion, any one who goes to an auction site can gather enough pictures and a more complete price list of all the Fire King items than this book. There are only 2-3 pages that have words/writting by the author. I didnot gain any new knowledge by reading this book at all. A waste of money. The one by Gene Florence is much better.

Anyone involved in rug hooking or wool work will find learning to dye wool is the next logical step to producing unique results - and one of the most essential parts of making finished products outstanding. Too problem-focused.......2000-10-29

This is just the latest of so many books that view normal adolescent development primarily from a problem perspective. Sure, there are challenges in adolescence for both teens and parents, and sometimes there are major problems to be addressed. But most adolescents, and parents, somehow manage the old and the new complexities of this period just fine. For a more positive approach, I recommend Laurence Steinberg's "You and Your Adolescent." Another fascinating book by Steinberg focused on school-related issues is "Beyond the Classroom."

Many case examples that wind up saying nothing new........1999-06-11

There are many new stressors on today's teens, including being the first generation being reared in a completely postmodern culture. Unfortunately, the author misses this and other more subtle cultural changes that impact today's adolescents in a big way. I recommend Elkind's "All Grown Up and No Place to Go" for a more thorough critique of how society shapes and complicates the teenage years.

A source of innocent merriment.......2003-10-16

It must be assumed that the enormity of the task, and his complete lack of qualifications to execute it, had not dawned on the author before he was too far into this project to abandon it. The result is simply a mess: some of the 1175 items cited in this Guide are derivative or trivial contributions to the vast literature, while seminal contributions to it have been overlooked. Most of the entries contain errors, suggesting that the book or article cited has received no more than a cursory examination. In many cases Saffle's description of the book or article bears no resemblence to its contents. For example, Saffle tells us that Nietzsche's 'Richard Wagner in Bayreuth' contains "impressions of the 1876 Bayreuth Festival", despite the fact that it was published before that Festival was held. When such an important resource as Curt von Westernhagen's catalogue of Wagner's Dresden library is incorrectly described, one can only conclude that the author of this Guide was far out of his depth. It is hard to understand how the publishers could leave the preparation of this book in the hands of an author who knew so little about Wagner that he could not even get the titles of the composer's major works right, either in the original language or in translation -- he believes for example that Wagner wrote 'Die Liebesverbot', 'Le hollandaise Volant' and 'The Valkyries' -- or why an individual who believes that the libretto of 'Die Zauberflöte' was written by Da Ponte and that the 'Altenberg Lieder' are the work of Anton von Webern, is writing about opera and music. It is to be regretted that the publishers did not see fit to involve anyone familiar with French or German in this project, since both these languages are obviously unknown to Saffle. The book in its present form and with its present quality is worthless, except perhaps as a source of unintended humour.

Not sugar-coated. Simple Living with Humour. Required read!.......2000-11-10

This is a wonderfully-written book from the perspective of the author's personal experience: a widow with four children who are mostly grown-up. There is no sugar-coating, and I value this honest approach. It helps me to determine where I want to be on the simple-living spectrum. It also gives me a whole new insight on living, in general.

She describes her own experiences, moving from Toronto (selling and giving away most of her possessions) to a small home on a lake in the Muskokas. From that foundation, she treats every aspect of living very thoroughly and honestly. From being honest with yourself about your own budgeting and expenses and tastes (which may include luxuries; for her, it is books) to how much education for your children could cost, and everywhere in between. The humour deftly woven into each subject serves as a reminder to underscore what she is saying. There are references to other sources for additional information, too.

I think this is an excellent book for anyone who wonders where all their money goes, why they feel drawn to a simpler life, and whether they could do it. It also helped me examine my conscience and understand financial life better from a woman's point of view, something that I'd never been able to grasp before. There are many social injustices, especially insidious in Canada where the masses proclaim what a wonderful and fair country in which to live.
