When the AVG disbanded in July, 1942 he re-enlisted as a technical sergeant and retured to China with the Army Airways Communications System. Flying Tigers as seen by Radioman Smith.......1999-02-20

This is a somewhat edited version of Robert M. Smith's diary that he kept during his year with the American Volunteer Group (Flying Tigers). Smith attended college before joining the Army, rather unusual for the time. He joined the AVG for adventure, like most of the pilots and technicians. And he kept a diary, as many of them did.

Smith's diary is especially insightful, and I used it a lot when I was writing my history of the Flying Tigers. He has a good eye for geography; I especially liked his account of driving up the Burma Road to the AVG's home base in Kunming.

I own the paperback; it was chock-a-block with photos, which I assume are included in the Schiffer edition. Good reading for all Flying Tigers buffs.

The story of how radio revolutionized aerial warfare........1998-06-10

Robert Smith gives you the lowdown from the air field on what it took to get the Flying Tigers in the air and to the Japanese bombers before they could strike their Chinese targets. Here is the truly brilliant saga of how Chennault's revolutionary combination of ground observation, central data gathering and fighter scramble turned aerial warfare from hunt and peck to dispatch and destroy.

We take these technologies for granted now, but when Chennault first proposed them he was laughed at by the fledgling air forces that stumbled along between the two world wars with no vision. Chennault had the vision of what modern air warfare would become. He proved it with the Flying Tigers by taking an under-manned, under-equipped, and under-funded unit and making it into the bane of the enemy.

Robert Smith puts you there in the radio room, nursing the equipment, listening through static, sifting the reports and making the critical decisions to scramble the planes. The pilots got the glory. Smith told them where the glory was to be gotten.

This is a little known page in the history of aerial warfare that is told clearly, up front and personal, by a man who was right there in the thick of it.

I heartily recommend With Chennault in China to anyone interested in The Flying Tigers and/or air combat history.

Best Candlestick Identification Book Out There!!.......2007-08-23

I now have all three volumes of this great Candlestick ID Book. I have gotten rid of the 5 others I had, as it is all in these 3 volumes! Candlesticks are listed by company names, but in the back of each book is a pictorial index that is fast to look through. There is also a quite complete index by name of pattern and maker. I cannot praise the 3 Glass Candlestick Books by Tom Felt and the Stoers enough! If you are interested in American Glass and don't have these, you need them!

I thought this book was great. It is an excellent resource guide if you are trying to identify candlesticks. It is very comprehensive: 1) provides a history of the manufacturing company, 2) explains the difference between candlesticks that could look identical but aren't, 3)provides a ballpark dollar value, 4) beautiful pictures, and 5) if they aren't 100 percent sure of the manufacturer, they aren't afraid to say so. In addition to all of that, it gives a "thumbnail" view in the back of all the candlesticks in the book so if you just time to quickly look for an identification, you aren't having to read a lot and flip a lot of pages. Great addition to my collection, and finishes the series. Excellent value for the price. Volumes 1 and 2 are also worth the money and time.

Well written and informative bio of a very great and gracious lady. I have been an admirer of the froman sound for many years and it is wonderful to get to know the singer. It is to bad she is not known to more generations who sing today, they could learn a lot about there craft by listening too her.

Accurate but lacking warmth.......2004-05-01

As a fan and friend of the late Jane Froman, I found Ms. Stone's book factually accurate and researched thoroughly. As I had lost touch with Ms. Froman, I was pleased to learn about her retirement years and sad to learn how ill she had become. My only adverse comments is the tone of the book. Jane Froman was a kind, compassionate, warm human being that only one having known her could capture the essence of her personality and character on paper. I feel that "Jane Froman: Missouri's First Lady of Song" is a wonderful research essay, great for public libraries, but does not capture Ms. Froman's personality. But at any rate, I'm happy that after all these years. there is something concise in book form for Jane Froman admirers to read and own. Thank you, Ms. Stone.

Long Overdue.......2003-11-30

Having been an avid fan of Jane Froman for many years, I was pleased to see that a long overdue biography has finally been written. Jane Froman was an outstanding entertainer and an inspiration to those that met her. Now sadly almost forgotten outside the USA her recordings to the few of us that know of her talent are prized additions to any collection of popular music. Now to the book, Ilene Stone was able to draw on the limited ammount of resourse material available from the Froman papers and Jane's few surviving friends. Given the fact that the subject died over twenty years ago Ilene has done a commendable job with her biography. This book is a mine of information about Jane, I do however wish that Ilene had expanded on some of the facts she quoted in her book, for example why was Jane Froman's hand held microphone technique famous? Bing Crosby, Marlene Dietrich and many other used hand held microphones after all.
All in all an excellent attempt to bring to public attention the talents and bravery of one of America's greatest entertainers. Perhaps that now Ilene has led the way Fox studio's will now make available "With A song In My Heart" on VHS and DVD.

An earlier edition of a now reissued family saga.......2005-02-20

This book apparently has been reprinted by Pan Books in Britain more recently, but is available in many libraries in the US, although it remains here out of print. I copy my review from the Pan edition hereafter; this Holt copy carries the whole subtitle.

This well-written, incisive, and even-handed telling of the author's Klaar family in Austria, 1842-1942, is a fine way to find out about how many Jews entered into the middle classes out of the shetl and worked their way up into the military and civilian ranks. The end of the narrative, when the author becomes a protagonist as he does in the opening pages, really captured my interest much more.

I wish Clare had taken more time with his own gripping story rather than so much focus on his predecessors, but this undoubtably is out of humility and respect for his forebears. I cannot tell if the book was written in German and then translated by the same author or if Clare only wrote the German original and the original publisher (Macmillan in London) anonymously translated it into fluid, forceful, and thoughtful English. Perhaps a minor point given the impact of the climax of the tale he tells of his kindred, but I commend him for the effort he put into his work, in the telling and the style both.

Also recommended: Charles Fenyvesi's account of how he excavated the roots and found the branches still flourishing of his Hungarian Jewish ancestors over the past 300 years, "When the World Was Whole."

The end of the narrative, when the author becomes a protagonist as he does in the opening pages, really captured my interest much more.

The destruction of a family, 1842-1942. By the 1930's the Klaars were so nearly assimilated into Viennese society that they thought of themselves as Austrians first and Jews second. But when in 1938 Hitler annexed Austria he released the latent anti-semitism that was so unexpectedly more vicious in Austria than in Germany, and the Klaars were hounded and insulted as if they were not people at all. The author recalls his childhood with remarkable clarity and humor, and the saga of this ordinary family is counterpointed with the chronicle of Austria's degradation and decline.
