Book Description
Reluctant Capitalists examines Russia's plodding, sometimes painful, journey toward a free-market. The book begins in 1990 with the end of Perestroika and the transition to Yeltsin's economic polices and continues through the end of the decade and the transfer of power to Vladimir Putin. Randall interviewed over seventy managers of thirty companies from St. Petersburg to Nizhy Novgorod to Moscow, Minsk, and Belarus. Russia is still caught in a downward spiral, with a declining standard of living, declining productivity, and more capital leaving the country than being reinvested in it. Through case studies, interviews and first-hand observation, Randall tells us of Russia's economic troubles and offers suggestions for making market reform work.

The Modern Physics Narative.......2007-10-01
What this book is not:
A text book
Written to explain some controversial theory
Promoting a world view or pseudo religious belief
An artful work of literature
Written for a general audience
What this book is:
A chronological narrative of the development of modern physics
A series of stories about scientist and the nature of their experiments
A tome that covers the most important physics discoveries for the era it covers
Why read this book?
I would recommend this book to anyone who studies the hard sciences
This book would nicely augment a modern physics course
Because knowing the history of science promotes real understanding
Wondeful book!.......2007-06-13
This is a wonderful book. I'm glad it's back in print again. Highly recommended, together with "From Falling Bodies to Radio Waves".
Letter Perfect.......2004-01-03
Segre` has written two excellect histories for the educated non-scientist. These are not "light" reads, but they are informative and entertaining. This is the second part of the pair (the first, "From Falling Bodies to Radio Waves") and is just exciting as the first. One could almost call this work, "The Story Continues". It tells of scientists working for years on end in attempts to understand the universe and its workings. Of course, we meet those geniuses that discovered a new aspect of reality or a long-sought explanation.
What is remarkable is how these great men and women used the work of each other to further their own endeavors. The practice of documenting new find and publishing scientific journals began during this era. Exquisite writine with diagrams, photographs and illustrations.
Must read for all history of science enthusiasts.......2002-05-26
This is a great book on the history of quantum mechanics. I highly reccomend it. Unfortunately the book is out of print and one needs to hunt down a used book.
It begins with the discovery of X-rays in 1895 and ends with events around the early 70's. It is interesting how the technological advances of today have come about after a sudden chain of discoverires starting with just 2 discoveries that acted as sparks: xrays and radioactivity (both of which thanks to some photpgraphic film that developed without the intention of the scientist). The chronological developments are nicely intertwined.
I enjoyed how the author has written of the rigorous development of quantrum mechanics from 3 different viewpoints of schrodinger, heisenberg and dirac and how they later proved that all 3 were the same. There are great photographs of the scientists of the time also. Overall very well written with lots of stories about the featured scientists. Can finish the book in one day, it was that incaptivating (to serve as a reference, am a chemistry student).
Segre brings the history of quantum phusics to life........1997-11-10
Segre's style on physics is straight forward and non-intimidating. But what make this book is his stories. Emilio met and worked with many of these men. He describes their personalities attitudes and politics, and they come alive in his book. This is history the way it ought to be taught. Squisito! Bravo! Bravisimo!
Book Description
Plutarch (Plutarchus), ca. 45-120
CE, was born at Chaeronea in Boeotia in central Greece, studied philosophy at Athens, and, after coming to Rome as a teacher in philosophy, was given consular rank by the emperor Trajan and a procuratorship in Greece by Hadrian. He was married and the father of one daughter and four sons. He appears as a man of kindly character and independent thought, studious and learned.
Plutarch wrote on many subjects. Most popular have always been the 46 Parallel Lives, biographies planned to be ethical examples in pairs (in each pair, one Greek figure and one similar Roman), though the last four lives are single. All are invaluable sources of our knowledge of the lives and characters of Greek and Roman statesmen, soldiers and orators. Plutarch's many other varied extant works, about 60 in number, are known as Moralia or Moral Essays. They are of high literary value, besides being of great use to people interested in philosophy, ethics and religion.
The Loeb Classical Library edition of the Lives is in eleven volumes.

Book Description
Historically, Filipina/o Americans have been one of the oldest and largest Asian American groups in the United States. In this pathbreaking work of historical scholarship, Dorothy B. Fujita-Rony traces the evolution of Seattle as a major site for Philippine immigration between World Wars I and II and examines the dynamics of the community through the frameworks of race, place, gender, and class. By positing Seattle as a colonial metropolis for Filipina/os in the United States, Fujita-Rony reveals how networks of transpacific trade and militarism encouraged migration to the city, leading to the early establishment of a Filipina/o American community in the area. By the 1920s and 1930s, a vibrant Filipina/o American society had developed in Seattle, creating a culture whose members, including some who were not of Filipina/o descent, chose to pursue options in the U.S. or in the Philippines.
Fujita-Rony also shows how racism against Filipina/o Americans led to constant mobility into and out of Seattle, making it a center of a thriving ethnic community in which only some remained permanently, given its limited possibilities for employment. The book addresses class distinctions as well as gender relations, and also situates the growth of Filipina/o Seattle within the regional history of the American West, in addition to the larger arena of U.S.-Philippines relations.

Science Foe ?.......2006-03-18
I have read Supernature and Beyond Supernature a number of times over the span of some twenty years. Hard science well.....hardly. Watson is the layman's science working from the small to the totality.
There are points in the book where you will agree , disagree, wonder at and dismiss. But the book is thought provoking it challenges our beliefs in the sciences, pokes holes in some long standing pillars for instance Neo - Darwinism.
It has a particular world view which some will embrace and others deride without self reflection.
Nonsense.......2004-07-27
Lyall Watson has made quite a living for himself by turning out books that mix sense and nonsense in an appealing way. This book, like "Supernature" before it, glibly asserts that there is indeed a scientific basis for all sorts of unsubstantiated claims made about the supernatural world.
Watson is often described as a naturist or a biologist in publicity blurbs. His PhD is actually in ethology, and was obtained under the direction of Desmond Morris, another academic given to flights of fancy in a scientific context. Like Morris, Watson has long abandoned his scientific studies, relying instead on intuition and speculation. Enjoy his books if you like, but keep in mind that you're not necessarily reading science.
Details the science behind psychic and other phenomena........1999-08-19
This book is a well-researched and detailed attempt to explain the science behind psychic and other "supernatural" phenomena. Watson cleverly takes the reader on a journey from the microscopic to the universal, offering fantastic examples of how the world of nature communicates and survives via an essential, unquantifiable link. This book is rarely dry, due in large part to the scores of reserch Watson has gathered (plants warning of imminent attack by foragers over vast spaces, sea sponges whipped in a blender then regathering into original form, the life and death of a riot crowd) and uses to illustrate our innate bond to each other and the supernatural world.

Customer Reviews:
Enthusiastic, Informative and Short..........2007-05-23
Sharon Heller has created a new type of biography, a cross-referenced kind of lexicon on an extremely complex subject.
The great minds of the twentieth century are vast and varied. Freud has to be one of the most influential intellectuals of the last century in terms of our popular culture today, most likely more prevalent than any other writer.
Einstein's theory of the universe and his popular protests against war made this man extremely popular, but his popularity was based on what Charlie Chaplin said, (paraphrased) "They love you because no one understands you. They love me because they all understand me."
Albert Schweitzer showed us what a good mind and a genuine willingness to help other misfortunate people can do to improve the planet; Mother Theresa took this notion further, showing the world the core of Christian belief; Crick revealed DNA and Oppenheim made the first nuclear bomb, using the explosive to destroy two cities in Japan.
The twentieth century will be remembered as the century of technological advancement like no other in our relatively short recorded history.
What is interesting, however, is that Sigmund Freud and his theories, despite losing popularity during its reign; many noteworthy psychologists, psychiatrists, in present day, continue to quote his theories, because Freud managed to do something important. He popularized the notion of the unconscious; that our conscious actions are not necessarily motivated on conscious grounds; our intentions, our `true' incentive could well be driven by our unconscious (unknowable) drives, our mind in constant conflict...a will (drive) to create (sex) and a will to destroy (death).
One of my favourite short texts by Freud, written shortly after the First World War is "Civilization and its Discontents", describing the Death Instinct persuasively. Heller manages to succinctly, in alphabetical format, explain most of Freud's general theories...thought by most to be an impossible task in such a short text.
One can feel Heller's enthusiasm and admiration for her subject. She writes clearly and her fascination on her subject is apparent, thus, as an old fan of the cigar smoking genius, this text is a pleasure to read.
At this point in time, have not decided whether the text is a good reference for students, (too much history, not enough theory) but it is surely a wonderful starting point as a simple beginning to Freud's theories and the man himself for anyone interested or curious.
A good text for the beginner and something entertaining for the informed reader as well.
4 stars
Attractive Freud easy to understand.......2006-03-01
This compilation is the most pleasurable reading I found about Freud yet. Presuming it is accurate it's A to Z topics are easy and interesting adding information about the man, theory and events related. Maybe you are a specialist but I am certain that you find something you don't know and would like to know.

Here There is No Why was the infamous Dr. Joseph Mengele's answer to Roma, Hela and millions of Jews who were trapped by the Nazis. Written to fulfill a promise made in the darkest moment in human history, this simple and eloquent story is unique, spanning the geography of the Holocaust. Rachel Chencinski Roth (Roma in Polish), the teenage daughter of a journalist, is witness to life in the Warsaw Ghetto and a participant in the heroic Warsaw Ghetto uprising. She relays to us the daily events of a schoolgirl and her classmates under German occupation. After the Nazis smoke her out of hiding, she bravely faces the reality of the gas chambers. Enduring the remainder of the war with her Aunt Hela, as they are transported into and out of concentration camps in Poland and Germany.
Customer Reviews:
Roma's Heart.......2004-12-15
I met Rachel Roth at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine at a Holocaust Memorial Concert last year. Daniel Liebeskind got an award. I bought this book after talking with her. I read it in one sitting. It was riveting. I have a greater understanding of what those incarcerated at Auschwitz experienced as a result of reading Mrs. Roth's account. My parents "escaped" from Hitler's Europe in the 1930's. I was sheltered from the horror of what happened until I was an adult. I have visited Auschwitz but this book gave my visit meaning. We should be grateful to Mrs. Roth for sharing her memories with us in such a realistic account. Everyone should read this book to understand what human beings are capable of doing to one another. It happens again and again. Thank you, Roma for revealing what is in your heart.
Amazing Book.......2003-04-16
Rachel Chencinski has written this amazing story of her childhood during the Holocaust. She really engages the reader in the story. Once I started reading, I could hardly put it down.
I can never thank you enough for the your book........2003-01-14
I have read a lot and seen movies of such experiences but none even came close to expressing and making me understand as deeply as Rachel Roth's book. She is a very brave and talented woman and her children, grandchildren and now great-grandchildren are fortunate to have such a mother and grandmother. I am fortunate to have her touch my life.
I hope Rachel Roth will continue to write. Tell us about her continuing journey through life such as her experiences in Israel as well as her impressions and feelings when she first came to New York. Roma has been an inspiration to many, I am sure.
The photo in the back of the book with the new baby is beautiful to see.
An amazing journey.......2003-01-06
Rachel Chencinski Roth tells an amazing tale of survival in this fascinating autobiography. She survived three Nazi camps using ingenuity and guided by faith. She vividly remembers the Poland of her youth, her experiences with family and friends, and contrasts that boldly against the horror of the Holocaust experience. Where the book suffers, is in the translation from Polish. The beautiful and poignant desciptions of her day to day existence contrast markedly from the simplistic dialogue.
Once involved in her saga, I found myself unable to put the book down.
COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN.......2002-12-27
Well told, a gripping saga of a young girl's ordeal in the hands of the Nazi's. Simple but touching, it would make a great film!
Roma's life is as joyous as any child's youth. It was quickly disrupted by the screaming trains of Hitler's war machinery. First it's the screeching train to bring her back home and later it is the cattle-car to the Concentration camps.
Product Description
This catalog for the exhibition "There Is No Why Here," illustrates Koenig's unique gumoil process of developing photographic images. The photographs achieve a "painterly" quality about them in response to Koenig's methods. This catalog focuses specifically on photographs of Holocaust-era concentration camps and ghettos, taken by Koenig between 1994 and 2000.
