Book Description
The question of why New Yorkers were such reluctant revolutionaries has long bedeviled historians. In an innovative study of New York City between 1763 and 1776, Joseph S. Tiedemann explains how conscientiously residents labored to build a consensus under difficult circumstances. New Yorkers acted the way they did not because they were mostly loyalist or because a few patrician conservatives were able to stem the tide of revolution but because the population of their city was so heterogeneous that consensus was not easily achieved. Differences within the city's pluralistic population slowed the process of hammering out a course of action acceptable to the large majority. The consensus that finally emerged had to be cautious rather than militant in order to unite as many people as possible behind the revolutionary banner. Ultimately, the time it took was far less significant, Tiedemann notes, than the fact that New York proceeded to declare independence, and went on to become a pivotal state in the new nation. In framing his argument, Tiedemann explains the limitations of interpretations offered by both progressive, New Left, and consensus historians. Citing the work of scholars as diverse as Walter Laqueur, Theda Skocpol, and Louis Kreisberg, Tiedemann pays close attention to the dynamics of British colonial rule and its impact on New York.

engrossing.......2007-05-06
c.k. veale tells the story of adult sisters: julia, who climbs above the wreckage of their abusive childhood, and shelley, who is buried beneath it. while not always a pleasant read, it was always an engrossing one - keeping me wide awake 'til all hours turning the pages (my benchmark of a good book!)
Inspirational!.......2004-02-24
I was hooked from the first page! I found the story, although heart wrenching at times, very inspirational and uplifting. Julia is a woman we can all look up to; a woman who manages to overcome a tortured childhood and emerge whole and complete. The characters were richly painted and easy to identify with. My women's group is using this book as the first book in our newly formed book club and find that it has given us hours of stimulating and thought provoking conversation. We all love Julia and hope that Ms. Veale has a sequel in mind for this wonderful character.
The Dark Side of Human Behavior.......2004-01-20
The book was an eye-opener for me. Having grown up in a loving family I was totally unprepared for the graphic descriptions of Julia's childhood. The author's portrayal and insight into abusive behavior were compelling-I found myself wanting to take Julia in my arms and tell her everything was going to be OK. The book served as a reminder for me that we can never take our children for granted. The development of Julia's character and how she faced life can serve us all as a wonderful example of overcoming life's hardships, without living/blaming the past.
Descriptive Detail.......2004-01-03
The detail in this book is so descripitive that the author pulls the reader into the story. I felt like I was on the sidelines watching the story unfold while holding back the tears, smiling, and cheering through different stages of the book. The main character is not only an inspiration but subtly teaches the reader some valuable lessons by just being who she is.
I am looking forward to enjoying more from C.K.Veale.
A page turner!.......2003-12-31
I couldn't put this great book down. I enjoyed visiting the past of the character and seeing her develop in the present as well. I really found myself getting excited and anxious to see what was going to happen next. I can't wait for another book to come out! Outstanding work!

Great story telling.......2007-09-22
I recommend it if you are looking for a great story, especially about the consequences of the Cuban Revolution. I literally could not stop turning the pages. Thanks!
The Reluctant Revolutionary .......2007-08-23
This is an excellent first person account of the Cuban Revolution and its aftermath. It was recommended to me, and they were right. I could not put the book down. The story moves by itself. Most of all the narrative unfolds with a complex story where every decision comes with consequence.
I really enjoyed it.
Self-Aggrandizing Account of Events.......2004-08-22
Having just read your book, I am amazed of your "accounts" of the events portrayed. It comes across as if your participation in the historical events were of such importance that you single-handedly helped win the revolution.
What an Ego!!!
The Reluctant Revolutionary.......2003-05-17
Excellent coverage of the last days of the Cuban revolution of 1958 from the point of view of somebody who was there.Very informative and entertaining. The author had a very interesting life but sad at the same time because of his exile from his beloved country. Lots of new material and good for those of us not so well informed about cuban affairs.
Book Description
Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln had only three meetings, but their exchanges profoundly influenced the course of slavery and the outcome of the Civil War.
Although Abraham Lincoln deeply opposed the institution of slavery, he saw the Civil War at its onset as being primarily about preserving the Union. Frederick Douglass, himself a former slave, by contrast saw the War’s mission to be the total and permanent abolition of slavery. And yet, these giants of the nineteenth century, despite their different outlooks, found common ground, in large part through their three historic meetings.
Lincoln first invited Douglass to the White House in August 1862. Well-known for his speeches and his internationally read abolitionist newspaper, Douglass laid out for the president his concerns about how the Union army was discriminating against black soldiers. Douglass, often critical of the president in his speeches and articles, was impressed by Lincoln’s response. The following summer when the war was going poorly, the president summoned Douglass to the White House. Fearing that he might not be reelected, Lincoln showed Douglass a letter he had prepared stating his openness to negotiating a settlement to end the Civil War—and leave slavery intact in the South. Douglass strongly advised Lincoln against making the letter public. Lincoln never did; Atlanta fell and he was reelected. Their final meeting was at the White House reception following Lincoln’s second inaugural address, where Lincoln told Douglass there was no man in the country whose opinion he valued more and Douglass called the president’s inaugural address “sacred.”
In elegant prose and with unusual insights, Paul and Stephen Kendrick chronicle the parallel lives of Douglass and Lincoln as a means of presenting a fresh, unique picture of two men who, in their differences, eventually challenged each other to greatness and altered the course of the nation.

Book Description
Three hundred years ago, the Catholic James II was removed from the throne of England and replaced by the Protestant monarchs William III and Mary II. The importance of this 'Glorious Revolution', long seen as a crucial shift in British history from absolutism to constitutional monarchy, has recently been questioned by historians: was it glorious? Was it even revolutionary? This wide-ranging book takes a fresh look at the people and events of 1688. Challenging much recent work that has played down the changes of James II's reign and its abrupt but peaceful end, Professor Speck argues that 1688 did see a decisive movement towards mixed, constitutional monarchy, but that this was by no means inevitable. However much they resented James's Catholic absolutism, Englishmen were reluctant to resist the later Stuarts; it was only the intervention of the Dutch, and the king's precipitate flight, that forced a change in the way Britain was governed. Drawing on material which ranges from the debates of English and Dutch politicians to popular pamphlets and broadsides, this account gives the student and general reader a vivid picture of politics and society during the Glorious Revolution. It looks at the nature of the late Stuart monarchy, and its likely development without the 'accident' of James II; at the personality of James himself, and the significance of his flight; and at the nature of the conspiracy to invite William of Orange to England and place him on the throne. It concludes with an examination of the constitutional importance of the Revolution, and of its long-lasting social and religious implications.

Very touching.......2005-03-29
If you know Calcutta, you will realize that the author has lived there. And you will love to read about people actively working to improve the life of the forgotten ones.
Recommended reading before or after going to India, definitely.
An amazing book on poverty!!.......2003-02-09
I found this book by chance. And it has been the best discovery in many years. The title could be misleading. It is not the story of a volunteer in Calcutta. It is the story of the millions of people that live in extreme poverty. It is about their dignity and will to live and overcome their problems. It is about the calm they have in the worst storm. And the author compares them to us. Compares the way they fight against all odds, with a smile, while we, so spoiled, make a big deal of small things. It makes us seem so spoiled, rotten, inmature... And it is true, we are... Also, the stories he tells are so poetical, so brief and wise... As I said before... The best book I have read in years... A true and amazing story, of someone with deep admiration and commitment to the poor...

Book Description
This book is one of the first to place thorough emphasis on spinning lures, contemporary collectibles, and miscellaneous lure companies, covered only vaguely in other volumes. Highlighted are the 'big six' companies: Creek Chub Bait Co., Heddon, Paw Paw, Plfueger, Shakespeare, and South Bend. Almost 1,700 detailed color photos of more than 3,600 lures supplement the chapters devoted to the big six companies, miscellaneous companies, spinning lures, folk art, and the rapidly growing area of contemporary collectibles. AUTHORBIO: Dudley Murphy decided to become a lifelong collector of fishing lures at the age of 13, when his grandfather presented him with a gift of old Heddon, Jamison, and Clark lures. As one of the three founders of the National Fishing Lure Collector's Club, Dudley is an active collector with a variety of interest, including fishing. REVIEW: This book concerns itself primarily with the most collectible antique fishing lures made since 1940.Each section begins with a short introduction about the company, followed by vivid, representative color photographs that the company made. Each photo lists the name of the lure, number, date manufactured, length, collector value, and any important notes or details about the lure. -Robert Clayton

Loved this book.......2007-03-27
I absolutely love this book. The illustrations and instructions are wonderful. I love the bears and kritters and can't wait to carve them all. I was really surprised and happy about how detailed the instructions were. Perfect for someone who is just beginning woodcarving. I really appreciate that the author tells you exactly what tools you need and the wood and everything. I did find out that although I had most of the tools I need I am missing a couple...guess I will be ordering some more tools. I highly recommend this book, you wont be sorry you bought it, I wasn't.
As a carver, I don't use a lot of carving books.......2007-03-27
But this one is pretty nice, and has popular animals that can be adapted to your own style.
Book Description
The American suburban dream house - a single-family, detached dwelling, frequently clustered in tight rows and cul-de-sacs - has been attacked for some time as homogeneous and barren, yet the suburbs are home to half of Americans. Architectural historian John Archer suggests the endurance of the ideal house is deeply rooted in the notions of privacy, property, and selfhood that were introduced in late seventeenth-century England and became the foundation of the American nation and identity. Spanning four centuries, Architecture and Suburbia explores phenomena ranging from household furnishings and routines to the proliferation of the dream house in parallel with Cold War politics. Beginning with John Locke, whose Enlightenment philosophy imagined individuals capable of self-fulfillment, Archer examines the eighteenth-century British bourgeois villa and the earliest London suburbs. He recounts how early American homeowners used houses to establish social status and how twentieth-century Americans continued to flock to single-family houses in the suburbs, encouraged by patriotism, fueled by consumerism, and resisting disdain by disaffected youths, designers, and intellectuals alike. Finally, he recognizes "hybridized" or increasingly diverse American suburbs as the dynamic basis for a strengthened social fabric. From Enlightenment philosophy to rap lyrics, from the rise of a mercantile economy to discussions over neighborhoods, sprawl, and gated communities, Archer addresses the past, present, and future of the American dream house.
Customer Reviews:
beginnings of suburbia.......2005-07-06
Archer puts suburbia into historical context, going back to before it was even known as this. Its beginnings were in the "nascent bourgeoisie...philosophical, economic, and political circumstances" of late seventeenth century England. Especially, the "new architectural type [of] the compact bourgeois villa" came to be seen as an ideal residence by the nascent bourgeois public. This architecture type allowed for a "new settlement pattern" different from the traditional ones of dense urban development and sprawling manors--namely, suburbia with its homes surrounded by lawns clustered in country-like areas. Along with laying out the cultural and philosophical origins of suburbia, including the developing concept of the self, Archer presents both sides of the assessment of suburbia. In modern-day America, where the majority of the population now live in suburbia, there has for many decades been an ongoing debate over whether suburbia is the acme of the American dream of prosperity and upward mobility or an illusion entailing the stifling of individuality and cultivation of materialism. Archer's book is substantive enough to be a text in college courses on suburban studies, while also being accessible and engaging enough as a timely work of cultural studies for the general reader. The author is a professor of cultural studies and comparative literature at the U. of Minnesota. With material ranging from Enlightenment English philosophy to portrayals of suburbia in recent movies, from architectural plans of the "compact bourgeois villa" to inventions such as lawnmowers and economic changes such as new banking practices associated with suburbia, the work demonstrates how fertile this subject is while bringing it into focus and drawing the avenues for further exploration of it.

More Costumes Than Faces.......2002-11-24
While this book displays some wonderful ideas for face painting, the focus seems to be more on the costumes and props that go along with the concept. I do face painting for large groups of disadvantaged children (at homeless shelters, special events, etc.). Therefore, I have only a brief amount of time to paint each child's face. I usually show the children the book and have them pick out what they'd like to be. But they would be very disappointed in the final result if it doesn't look like the wonderful images in the book, which are enhanced by the costumes. Many of the pages in this book are only devoted to creating the costumes (often without any face painting even involved). So it doesn't suit my purposes.
Customer Reviews:
A very informative book!.......2007-09-21
I guess everyone knows or has seen Dolly Parton perform. She knows how to take a lemon and make lemonade out of life's challenges. I highly recommend the reading of this book.
Hoping for a sequel, though.......2007-05-23
The best thing about Dolly Parton's autobio is 'hearing' her VOICE come through the print. Eternally optimistic and carefully eccentric, there's no doubt Parton has one of the most blithesome star qualities in the biz. And why not - it's her business to be so lovable.
While she hedges (considerably) on her 'indentured servitude' with Porter Waggoner and speaks infrequently about her creative process (writing and recording), when she gets a topic that pleases her - such as her childhood exploits - Parton lets go like one of her coolest numbers. Her humanism seems unbounded.
Since the publication of this book, Parton, confounding all reasonable expectations, returned to the studio with a revitalized muse, producing some of her most credible work (Grass Is Blue, and onward). Hopefully, we shall 'hear' Parton speak of her artistic reinvention in a future volume.
A laugh a page.......2007-03-05
I knew Dolly Parton had a good sense of humor but I didn't know it was as far out as it is. Although I've been a fan for a long time, I'm a "lazy" fan and didn't even realize she had an autobiography out there until recently. Just to think I could have been laughing 13 years ago. Duh! If you're feeling down and need a laugh, get this book. Dolly needs her own TV show and if the people who run Hollywood had good sense, she would have had it long ago. Of course, they don't so they would have probably put the wrong writers on it and it would have been cancelled in a week.
Dolly And Friends..........2005-08-05
Dolly had a hard life growing up in the wilds of East Tennessee; she started out poor and indeed did have a 'coat of many colors' as her children's book explained. She wore hand-me-downs in the backwoods of Sevier County where my paternal grandfather's people lived. She's funny. Coming from the country, it took some doing and lots of help to get where she is today. She has re-invented her personality through the years from the young lovesick girl who write 'I Will Always Love You' to Porter Wagoner. After all, she was a young country bumpkin from the Knoxville area, and we inexperienced girls fall hard for the first person we can admire. He gave her the first 'big' break, singing on his show in Nashville.
She had been on local talent shows in Knox County, Cas Walker's for country music. She migrated to Middle Tennessee to sing on the Grand Ole Opry where she met my friend, Hal Durham, who was manager of that fabulous old show on radio, television and live. I once attended at the Ryman and he gave Zachary and me a backstage tour.
In Nashville and in the movies, she had a good life but suffered some setbacks and depression. The two photo secitons show how little Dolly the girl was transformed into Dolly the bombshell blonde. She is the richest person in this area as she owns Dollywood, the major attraction for people from all the states who visit the Great Smoky Mountains and from other countries.
In her 'thanks' section, she included her favorite makeup, Revlon staff, and favorite lingerie shop, Frederick's of Hollywood. She includes Terry Morrow, local entertainment columnist for the News Sentinel daily Knoxville newspaper, and Ligiea Saveanu (whoever she is -- I was going to name my daughter Ligeia). From the Grand Ole Opry performers, she includes Archie Campbell from the famous Civil War area in EAst Tennessee, Bull's Gap, Grant Turner, and Bud Wendell, WSM announcer. Game show hosts were Bob Eubanks and Huell Howser; how could she leave out Wink Martindale and Pat Sajacks, both Tennesseans? For some reason, she included the Knoxville Democrat Party chairman, Jim Gray, Al Gore, Jim Sasser, and Sandra Fulton (wife of Dick Fulton of Nashville). Movie stars included Kevin Costner, Jane Fonda, and Delta Burke, while singers were Mac Davis, Billy Ray Syrus, Whitney Houtston and Reba McEntire. She has Johnny Carson, Eddie Hill, and many many others -- too many to mention.
Like most successful people, she has humility when it comes to feeling indebted to others for her success. She showed he CBS anchor a thing or two when he enterviewed her ans commented on her most obvious attraction. She has talent galore, and I wish Dolly could live forever. She will in the figure on Sevier County Courthouse Lawn, as a young country girl. Dolly is everything to everybody.
*****A Country Superstar!*****.......2005-06-08
Put simply, I LOVE this book! I've just finished reading it for the second time and it's even better than it was the first time.
I read it when it first came out in 1994 and was so jazzed to find it a few weeks ago in a used bookstore. I had a few other things to read before I picked up Dolly, but now that I have, I don't want it to end!
I can't say enough good and great and amazing things about this biography. She wrote it herself and it's honest, down to earth and funny as all get out. Because of it, I even added some more Dolly Parton CD's to my music collection and it was a very much needed trip down memory lane.
Thanks, Dolly, for such an amazing, revealing look at what makes you tick. Now, what I want to know is: when is your next book coming out. :)
Book Description
This engaging collection of stories is an intimate look at Dolly Parton's family, told by her oldest sister, Willadeene. Rare family photos included.

One of the best Writers I have ever come in contact with!!.......2002-02-14
Willadeene Parton is a very wonderful and great writer. She is not only sucessful at writing about her family but she is a great poet and cook as well. Her cook books are Awesome if you are into some great southern cooking. I have ate some of her meals in her cook book prepared by none other than herself, I used to be her Personal Assistant, and let me tell you, she cooks better than anyone I know. The Books are a great Pleasure to read and the cook books are just as much fun. Not just coming from a Friend but form a True Fan. ....
The tales of a unique family come to life in an amusing book.......1999-04-28
Originally, this book was released as "In the Shadow of a Song" in 1986. I read it then, and I read it again and enjoyed it as much as a second helping of grits and gravy and country ham. Brandon B., Tampa, FL
I loved it........1998-02-27
I have read this book front to back three times!! I was born in Appalachia and have lived in the hills and hollows of East Tennessee all my life. I related to the deep family roots, and loving atmosphere their family had growing up. Willadeene captured not only their family spirit but, the pain, laughter, and triumphs of the Appalahcian people.
Great job on your book, Willadeen. I love you!.......1997-09-08

The rolling hills of Tennessee farmland, framed in lovely patchwork quilt patterns, set the stage for Dolly Parton's (of Grand Ol' Opry fame) warm childhood memories. The text comes directly from Parton's autobiographical hit country and western song of the same name. Perhaps the grammar is imperfect, but what C&W song ain't rife with grammatical errors--it's part of the vernacular. The story centers on a poor, but happy and loving, family (yes, they do exist) who find clever ways to deal with their poverty. As winter approaches, Mama sews a coat for her daughter from a box of scraps that someone has given her. Of course her classmates make fun of her for having a coat made of rags. But sticks and stones... "And although we had no money / I was rich as I could be / in my coat of many colors / that Mama made for me." That doesn't mean the child's feelings aren't hurt, or that she didn't feel angry. But the message comes through loud and clear (like Parton's voice): the child's mother has provided her with the strength to deal with other children's jeers, and family love can sometimes be enough to pull a person through.
Book Description
Winter is coming to Tennessee and there's no money to buy a new coat, so a little girl's mama sews one for her out of rags. The little girl wears it to school proudly, and when the other children laugh, she gives them a quick lesson about what it means to be rich. Judith Sutton's beautiful paintings bring one of Dolly Parton's best-loved songs to life. "The heartfelt verses are imbued with the same genuine, infectiously likeable spirit Parton herself projects."'Publishers Weekly.

Great bedtime book.......2007-04-14
I am a huge Dolly Parton fan and I had to buy this book for my little girl. It is a great book for beginning readers and it has a nice message about being different.
Just precious.......2007-01-20
The book was so very well written and illustrated. The publication was colorful and the paper was first class. It definitly is a book our family will treasure for many years. Even though I ordered the book late, I received it in plenty of time for Christmas.
Excellent book.......2006-11-08
Beautifull illustrations. Bought for our grandaughter as my lovely wife made her a coat of many colors too. A sweet story with good moral value. Read aloud to your children and your grandchildren.

Vigor, Vim & Vitality.......2005-08-05
Dolly had a hard life growing up in the wilds of East Tennessee at the foot of the Smoky Mtns.; she started out poor and indeed did have a 'coat of many colors' as her children's book explained. He gave her the first 'big' break, singing on his show in Nashville. She had been on local talent shows in Knox County, Cas Walker's for country music.
Like most successful people, she has humility when it comes to feeling indebted to others for her success. She has talent galore, and I wish Dolly could live forever. She will in the figure on Sevier County Courthouse Lawn, as a young country girl. Dolly is everything to everybody.

Book Description
Journalist Nash has expanded her earlier biographer of singer Dolly Parton to include the past two decades of her remarkable career, including several Grammy wins and an Oscar nomination, plus the return to her musical roots with her past two albums.
Customer Reviews:
A treasure!.......2003-11-02
For anyone even slightly fascinated by Dolly (and who ISN'T?), this book gives rare and detailed insights into the life and mind of a true music icon. Ms. Nash shares not only facts and history, but "up close and personal" information gleaned from her own interactions and time spent with Dolly. A rare opportunity to glimpse the life and persona of this musician who continues to grip the music industry throughout the decades...Dolly's ongoing and unrelenting "star status" illustrates her enduring charisma that never ceases to perpetuate the adoration, fondness, and loyalty of fans and the American music scene.
Despite the fact that this republishing of this book reveals relatively limited updates and leaves the reader wanting even MORE, the biography is and remains a classic that stands the test of time...much like Dolly herself!
25 Year Old Book Barely Updated!!.......2003-08-03
I can't believe this 1978 book has been reprinted exactly as it was 25 years ago with only a tacked on chapter for the last 25 years!!! Not one word from the original book appears to have been changed, thus you get long dead people like Marty Robbins being quoted as if they were still around, even the forward is the same as it was in 1978 comparing Dolly to Farrah Fawcett and Cheryl Tiegs!!! First time readers might think they have fallen into a time warp as the book is written in the present tense much like a magazine article (which made the book dated VERY early on like say 1980). It's pretty shocking to read chapter and chapter on 1977 and 1978 and then bam - one chapter for 1979-2003!!
The book itself wasn't so great even in 1978 - Ms. Nash has a very bad habit of quoting "anonymous insiders" thoroughout the book many of whom make comments that Dolly is making bad career decisions and suggest she is about to mess up her career big time! Even these ridiculous comments were not deleted from this new (sic) edition!! Ms. Nash can be downright catty herself at times, especially to Parton's first biographer who put out a paperback the year before and whom Nash ludricously blames for a lack of participation by the Parton family with her book. (Nash wrote a rather nasty article for WRITER'S DIGEST after her book came out that claimed in essence Dolly tried to sabatoge her book, Ms. Nash fails to make any comments of the kind here in her "update" chapter.)
The repackaging of this old book with a recent cover photo of Dolly must be considered the literary equivalent of all those endless low-budget CD reissues of those very early teenaged tracks of hers like "Letter to Heaven" and "Making Believe" (cheapie productions that don't even sound like her) that are found in dollar stores. Alas, this publisher expects the consumer to cough up quite a pretty penny more than those budget CD companies.
If Alanna Nash wanted to bring this book back into print she should have rewritten it so it would make sense to a 2003 reader, instead it's just an tacky and lazy attempt to make a few extra bucks from the never ending public fascination with the great Dolly Parton!!
