            Book Description

The Shenandoah Valley, which stretches some 200 miles from Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, to Roanoke, Virginia, is rich in both history and natural beauty. Highlights from the 14 day-trips in this book include such sites as the New Market Battlefield, where 247 teenage cadets from VMI halted advancing Union troops; 6,000 acres of rare virgin forest in Ramsey's Draft Wilderness Area; the Mennonite towns of Dayton and Bridgewater, where the horse and buggy is still a primary mode of transportation; Highland County, where sheep outnumber people; and Fort Valley, which was the planned route for George Washington's final retreat had the Revolutionary War turned out badly for the Americans.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great ideas for weekends!.......2007-10-02

This book is full of great short trips on lesser traveled paths in the Washington DC area. We have done a few and have had a great time discovering some out of the way places. Great as a starting point for further discovery!

5 out of 5 stars I-81 Road Warriors: This Is The Road Less Traveled.......2006-09-06

This book is truly a work of art. Each of its thirteen driving/walking tours is thoroughly researched, exquisitely detailed, and wonderfully arranged in such a way that they can be enjoyed in as little as two hours, or savored over an entire weekend. In all my years of driving up and down I-81, I never appreciated the depth and intensity of these places that seemed nothing more than exit signs along the interstate. Andrea Sutcliffe's delightful stories of the people that once lived in this valley would be entertaining enough by themselves; seeing first-hand their homes and the towns in which they lived has brought them to life in a way that I am thankful to have experienced and highly recommend to fellow travelers.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely useful guide to a beautiful area.......2006-04-10

I've made good use of this book as we've explored one of the loveliest places in the world, the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and West Virginia. The maps are helpful and the descriptions are valuable history lessons. If you are coming to the Shenandoah, get this book and plan to extend your stay - there is so much to see and do.

4 out of 5 stars No color Photos!.......2005-10-15

I guess that's putting it wrong..the color pictures are all on the front of the book. I gave this book as a gift to my mother, to inspire her to come visit me after having moved here this year. I figured that the pictures would really grab her attention. When i called to ask how she liked her gifts she replied , "well it would have been nice if the pictures were in color." *UGH* I felt mislead because nowhere in the description does it say that the photos are black and white...i know that the look inside the book pic are b&w but i assumed it would at least be half and half. I can't really give it a bad rating because i don't know yet if the information given is helpful or well written, but if you are looking for a scenic travel book this MAY not be for you.

5 out of 5 stars TOURING THE SHENADOAH VALLEY BACKROADS.......2002-04-18

HOW WONDERFUL TO RELIVE THE VIRGINIA BACKROADS OF MY "GROWING UP YEARS" THE DESCRIPTIONS AND LOVELY PICTURES WERE A PURE DELIGHT. I ORDERED SEVERAL FOR MY FRIENDS. I FELT I HAD RENEWED ALL THE BEAUTIFUL SITES OF MY CHILDHOOD. THANKS ANDREA

From the supplier: Allocation of gain and loss on property contributed to a partnership must conform with IRC section 704(c) rules when the book value of the property and the partnership's basis in the property differ. Section 704(c) limits the partners ability to allocate tax attributes by requiring that built-in gain and loss in certain property be attributed to the contributing partner. Section 704(c) identifies three methods, the traditional, the traditional with curative allocations and the remedial allocation methods, for accounting for built-in gain and loss in such partnership property.

From the supplier: Depreciation on property that was misclassified in prior year's returns could be changed through the use of Form 3115 and an IRC 481 adjustment until recently. The IRS is considering a change in policy to deny this because the adjustment and change in accounting method permitted the allowable depreciation to affect the basis in the property in closed and open tax years. A new policy would allow access to open years by filing an amended tax return instead.

From the supplier: Businesses defined as tax shelters must use accrual accounting instead of cash accounting. If the change to accrual accounting is not made when required then all adjustments will occur in one year if lack of compliance is discovered. To prevent this problem, inactive family members should own under 35% of the company. Recognition of losses can also be prevented by careful monitoring of cash receipts and outlays.

From the supplier: The IRS and the taxpayer have different ways of calculating the depreciation of the latter's real estate. In a hypothetical case, a taxpayer purchased a property in May 1985 for $750,000. Using the 18-year ACRS, the taxpayer assessed that the price of the property is broken down as follows: $150,000 for land and $600,000 for improvements. However, 1994 county tax records revealed the value of the property being 50% land and 50% improvements, making depreciation value from 1994 to 2003 total $21,000 instead of $246,000.

A must have book for every student and collector of world gold coins from the 1600's on. I agree that for research prior to the 1600's one needs Friedbergs "Gold Coins of the World" . As a professional coin dealer I recommend both of these books to customers who are interested in learing about and collecting world gold coins.

This book fits its purpose well. Interesting vignettes into the quirks of old homes ad their owners. Rich photography of homes actually lived in by families. If you don't expect too much you won't be disappointed.

I also may be partial to Dr. Dixon's book because he has counseled our family through some very difficult times. However, I have found that by taking Dr. Dixon's advice, it has become so much easier to communicate with, understand, and relate to,my son.I strongly recommend this book to all parents--It will definitely help in the most important job of all--parenting your children. Thanks, for all your help Dr. Dixon!

I wish i had discovered unemotional parenting along time ago. Putting Parents in charge teaches you how to disciple with alot less stress. As a mother of 3 teenages i was always on an emotional rollercoster. My inconsistancies allowed them to renegotiate any punishments. Now by making contracts ahead of time allows them to learn that they make the choices and the consequences. It is never too late to get to know your child and teach them responsiblity.

Excellent book Dr. Dixon. I see myself and my family on almost every page. This has helped me take charge of my kids by putting my parenting energy before they act out, not after they do. My kids have responded so positively to your parenting philosophy,, we have cut down on the struggles a hundred fold,,, Thank you,, A must read for all parents

I may be prejudiced about this book, since Dr. Dixon is our son's psychologist, but his advice is right on the mark. This book gives parents confidence to take charge of their children's upbringing, rather than allowing society to tell us how to raise them.

I found It doesn't take a village to be simply the best parenting guide out there. I have four kids ranging from age 10 to 17, and Dr. Dixon has helped me a great deal. First he helped me understand what is going on with my kids, and then he helped me set appropriate and consistent limits on them. I was/am a parent that often times let my emotions dictate how I would deal with my teenagers, and at times, I lost control. Dr. Dixon has coached me to parent my teens without the mistakes of emotionality... I am enjoying putting the books ideas into practice. My kids hate it, but I love it. Finally, I feel like I am in charge of my home and of my children.

Forget the niggling, critical reviews. If it's a literary masterpiece you're looking for, read Shakespeare. Rahsaan Roland Kirk fans, however, will be grateful to John Kruth for his hard work and dedication in gathering insightful glimpses into the life of this enigmatic genius through the narratives of those who knew him best.

Charges that Kruth has written a hagiography or "puff piece" are unfounded. Although he is obviously an unbridled Kirk enthusiast, he does not hide the fact that Rahsaan had an overly defensive, contentious, and often abrasive side.

Yes, we want to know more about personal relationships, e.g., with his son Rory and first wife Edith. True enough, there are elements of redundancy to be found within the 400+ pages. But then again, breathing is redundant yet essential to us jazz fans...and others.

Read Bright Moments while listening to your favorite Roland Kirk CDs and it will all come to life.

                                        4 out of 5 stars A start on documenting a remarkable life.......2004-07-15

Most of the remarks about this book are, to me, puzzling and seem to indicate that the readers don't know very much about the musical life of this great artist.

Musical biographies should do one thing: shed light on what in the artist's life led to his or her particular conception. Do I care who Rahsaan's parents were? What they did? What kind of food his sister liked? Not necessarily; only in connection to the work that he ultimately produced. We should also ask, of course, why we should care about the artist's contributions to music as a whole, and his or her effect on society at large. Kruth attempts to do both.

He chooses to treat his subject primarily from the vantage point of the musicians who influenced him and the people upon whom he had an influence. Not surprisingly, the opinions expressed are strong, and mostly favorable. Anyone who reads the book should have no doubt as to the force of Rahsaan's music and the forces of the mid to late '60s that helped produce it. Rahsaan emerged as a musical hero to many of us who came of age during that time when music seemed to be, as Coltrane said, "a force for real good." How strange that sounds in 2004.

The latter, then, may be the greatest flaw of the book. Those, like me, who saw Rahsaan perform and who own most, if not all, of his recorded music, will understand the testimonials to the power of his art and the force of his personality. Those who haven't bothered to investigate his music in depth won't get it. Those who have not listened carefully to his work will not understand the success he had in melding the "black classical music" of jazz, as he called it, with pop influences. In that sense, Kruth may have failed, if his effort is to bring additional listeners to Rahsaan's music.

That said, for me, the book's most compelling messages come from Joel Dorn, the man who produced Rahsaan's greatest records, and who was, in turn, his greatest champion and critic. Dorn points out throughout the book that the justifiable anger Rahsaan held toward the commercialism that helps to control what we listen to was, in some ways, his greatest drawback. Even his closest friends found his deep resentment against mainstream society puzzling, especially, as Dorn points out, because Rahsaan himself was a middle class guy who believed--and succeeded in proving--that the most far-out sounds had strong roots in everyday music of the masses.

It is this last notion that Kruth brings out best in the book, and I value his contribution to jazz biographies because I recognize the voice of a kindred spirit. He hears what I hear in Rahsaan's music. My hope is that others, in reading the book, will find reason to listen.

                                        1 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2003-06-18

This is the worst Jazz biography that I have ever read. It's basically a collection of quotes from various individuals - some knew Kirk; others did not - whose message is, "Rahsaan Roland Kirk was a genius." Well, duh. It never digs any deeper than that. What a waste.

You'll learn more about the man by reading the liner notes from his recordings. So buy his recordings now!

                                        2 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2002-07-13

Like many other readers, I was quite excited to see a book on Rahsaan, a long-time musical hero. However, I can't agree more with the Kirkus review; this is one long, rambling book without focus. I'm only 1/3 of the way thru & may not even finish it. Kirk's is a great story but it's not here.

4 out of 5 stars Liner Notes for the Boxed Set.......2001-09-22

I encountered this book when I ducked into a library on a sweltering day while on vacation. The title attracted me because of its association with Kirk. Lo and behold, it was about Roland Kirk! I sat down with it and was immediately pulled in. The book is mostly anecdotal which means you get to enjoy many "voices" but it does occasionally get confusing because people refer to people you haven't been introduced to and much of what is said is repeated by others throughout the book. It must have been a bear organizing the stuff. Still..Kirk was simply amazing and if you love to read liner notes on jazz albums, well this is like reading one giant liner note, worthy of a giant boxed set. Lots of fun and you have to be inspired by the man's spirit.

                                          Until We Meet Again

I like to read very much and have read many, many books! Until We Meet Again has got to be one of my favorite books I've ever read! I must admit that at the beginning it was very confusing because there are two large families in the book and they keep switching to both of them and at first they are hard to keep track of and you forget who is in each family. But once you get into the story, you really begin to know the characters. I think that is one of the main reasons I liked this book so much, you care for the characters Meyer and Manya so much that you want to keep reading just so you can make sure that they are safe and nothing happens to them. The book was great and really made me understand the Holocaust more! The book was realistic and true without being gruesome and heart wrenching the whole way through, giving you breaks in between to wipe away the tears. Even though it was a very sad story, it's sort of neat to know that it's true and their son wrote it. Some parts made me laugh or cry while others just left me speechless. I really grew to love Manya and I hoped that she would be okay. And Meyer was one of the bravest people I know! What he did for his family and Manya was un-thinkable not to mention his 3 close calls to death! Reading this book really made me think about what these people went through. Hiding in haystacks, little ones not being able to talk or play. Always scared that you would be discovered by the Nazis. Being separated from your family not knowing if you'd ever see them again, not even being able to say good-bye. And things we take for granted like food, clothes, warm beds, and even our hair, reading this made me treasure life more! I would highly recommend this book to anyone! That's why I gave it 5 stars

OH MY GOSH...this book was soooo good. i started off reading it from language arts, cuz we had to pick a book about the holocoust, but i couldnt put it down when i started it. i was blown away by the detail and something true, like this, could hold my attention. i found my self at the end of the book wishing there was a sequel!!

I've had the opportunity to read the book, and meet Michael Korenblit! A great man, a great story. His respect diversity organization based out of Oklahoma City sells the book from a different publisher. The Respect Diversity Foundation webpage is the place to check into this or get in touch with the author.

I loved this book so much that during breakfest, I almost missed the school bus because I couldn't put it down! This in my opinion is one of the greatest books of all time. It touched me in amazing ways. I would definetly reccomend this book to children and adults.
