Antiques and collectibles covers such a vast array of knowledge, that no one book could ever cover it all. This book is an excellent resource for someone like myself who wants to get his feet wet. I covers a lot of topics lightly. They include: Pottery and Porcelain, Glass, Bottles, Furniture and furniture construction, Lighting Devices, Silver, Pewter, Tinware and Toleware, Clocks, Needlework, Jewelry, Prints, Paintings, and Pictures to Hang, Paper Antiques, Store stuff (that is what they called that chapter), Books, Music, Toys, and other collectible items.
I was interested in learning more about French Provincial furniture, and several other furniture types were covered-briefly. I learned that if you want to get a good deal of information about any one type of item, it is best to consult a book that specializes in that area. A short paragraph, or page or two about something really scratches the surface. Most likely the specific piece you have in mind will not be covered.
This is a great book for general education. After all, you never know what you will stumble on that is of great value, and is ready to be given away. I think collecting is a matter of, if you really like it, then it is for you. It is just as well to know how much it is worth, and where it came from, and how old it is. In a general sense, this book will give that all to you. A nice read for someone like myself who is not seasoned in antiquity.
A lot of museums, historical societies, and collectors helped to provide the information that is in this book. Highly recommended.

Well organized and informative........1998-07-26

This book offers excellent and basic information on a cross-section of antiques as well as odds and ends. It is well organized and easy to read. I started to just scan it but found each section I would begin, too interesting, so I would finish reading that particular section. Worthwhile for the novice and those who are open to picking up some new information.

I have been making digital scrapbook pages for the past 2 years. I bought this book as part of a three book deal from a book club and I absolutely love it! It teaches you how to evaluate your pictures and choose the best possible layouts and color for them. It even has before and after pictures of pages and gives reason what made them better so you can see the rules and logic applied. Before I had several pages that I really was proud of, but now my pages really stand out and I'm getting better everyday! It made me go back and redo some previous pages that just didn't seem to work.

Good for New Scrapper, Better for Advanced Scrapper.......2006-03-08

This is a very good book for any level of scrapbooker with lots of good, basic information on color theory and layout design. I think a beginning scrapbooker can get a lot of good information about how to create a layout - but this book does not discuss how to organize photos, journal or create an album - so it is not a good "how-to" book. I would try the Scrapbooking for Dummies, etc. series if you want to learn how to scrapbook from a book or look-up a local Creative Memories consultant. This book is better used to inspire and trouble shoot. I often refer to this book when I am working on a layout and something is not quite right, but I'm not sure what. Reading this book usually helps me figure out the best color schemes to use or how to establish a focal point for my layout. In addition, the layouts are really good, with up to date product lists.

Reading through the list of harmful products gives you an idea of the ingredients to avoid in cleaners and how they can affect your health. For an antibacterial spray, the author suggests water and essential oils and for cleaning silver she also suggests more natural solutions like baking soda and vinegar. Using Borax and water is less dangerous than chlorine bleach fumes and you may want to try this in your shower. You may enjoy products by Seventh Generation.

Chapter three felt a little out of my personal range of expertise, although we know that thoughts can affect our environment and life and can move our life in a positive or negative direction. This chapter deals more with spiritual practices. Chapter 6 also delves into a deeper connection with nature, personality types and elemental powers. The list of Yin and Yang is helpful to create a balance of the two in your home. An entire chapter is also dedicated to plants, gemstones and crystals.

"If you are the average American woman, you expose yourself to over two hundred synthetic chemicals that are found in the products you use as you prepare yourself for the day. These products do not simply sit on your skin; approximately sixty percent of these ingredients get absorbed into your bloodstream." ~ pg. 91

Chapter four is especially informative and essential if you are trying to be healthier and want to find organic alternatives to products filled with synthetic chemicals. Why should you avoid petroleum and talc? Why is there lead in hair dye?

The section on an Eco-Friendly Kitchen is interesting and the chapter on natural and organic foods also gives ideas on how to save time in the kitchen. A few recipes are included:

The goal of this book is to create positive energy both in your home and your life and to be kinder to the earth. Hertie is a design consultant, chef, gardener, and healer. Hertie uses Harmonious Adjustments (TM) that combines "the best principles of Feng Shui, the application of the Four Elements based on your birth date, color, Vastu, energy work and good design." I've read a few Feng Shui books in the past, but the author's clear instructions and enthusiasm has given me the confidence to actually try this at home.

I liked how the author reminded me to use this book as a guideline but to also trust my intuition. Do what looks and feels right for you. I also liked how the Resource section listed all the suppliers, organizations and further readings mentioned throughout the book.

Even if you aren't interested in Feng Shui, this book has valuable information about becoming an informed consumer and living a more eco-friendly life.

Fantastic book with tons of information.......2007-01-18

I got this wonderful book as we are moving our place of business, and wanted to make smart choices. From the first page, Ms. Lehmeier-Hartie shares her expertise in an organized, thoughtful way. The day after I got the book, I negotiated a much more logical and healthier ventilation system, and the section on colors was far and away the most organized and logical explanation I have ever seen.

Some aspects of our project are beyond our control, but I became a much more active participant. We anxiously await our new space, and know that the suggestions made here will add to the beauty and functionality of our space. I wish I could have rated this 10 stars!

Not since Bill Withers' song, "Grandma's Hands" has there been such a touching tribute to a "bubbe", the Yiddish word for grandmother. Or, in this lucky case, to BOTH her 90-something grandmothers. How I envied her the privilege, courage and perspicacity to ask these questions before it was too late! I shared many, many things with my beloved grandmother, but I wish with all my heart that I had done what Joy Horowitz did in "Tessie and Pearlie", to search out and record the stories of her grandmothers' lives, what made them who they are, what their lives mean to her own life, to her children's lives. Joy Horowitz did, indeed, build an amazing, bittersweet bridge between her family's past and future and created a truly precious legacy for her own children and subsequent generations of her family. Especially when one is young, it is very often difficult to let go of the irritations and inconsistencies you see in your parents and grandparents and really communicate with them. It is usually in middle age that the sense of one's mortality overcomes these quibbles and by then, for most, it is too late for grandparents. If you are now fortunate enough to have a living grandmother, seize the moment. Read this book, put on Bill Withers and cry and - and then go call her up and ask and ask and listen and listen. Then write it down for posterity and marvel at the blessing.

Having known one of the grandmothers, it made the book much more real for me. Joy's portrayal of her grandmothers' lives is rich with the love and sorrow that each has endured. This book also tackles the issues of aging with a mature and realistic outlook. This has to be one of the most inspiring books I have read.

This is Joy Horowitz's tribute to her two jewish grandmothers. They are both in their 90's and as feisty and loving as can be. In a book full of wisdom, humor, and yes, recipes, there is a lingering sense of mortality as both bubbes tell their tales and wonder when death will claim them. This is a book for anyone who treasures the stories of years past, who loved to sit at their grandmother's knee as she told stories of years gone by. It will leave you at turns both happy and almost tearful as each grandmother grapples with the life she has lived and the fact that she won't be around much longer. Please read this book, it will help you as you look at the big picture of life and determine what is really important to you

Este es un libro que vale la pena leerse, escrito por un verdadero fan y conocedor de los Rolling y no por un articulista cubriendo un encargo. Conocí muchos nuevos aspectos del grupo que me eran desconocidos y me queda claro que su aportación a la música y a la cultura es algo que tendrá que estudiarse algun día en las universidades. Los Rolling fueron una gran banda, con un legado tan grande que cuando ya no estén, el vacío será difícil de llenar. El día de ayer los Rolling agotaron las entradas a sus conciertos en Irlanda en seis minutos, lo cual me hace recordar un pasaje de la introducción del libro que recuerda cómo en los años noventas aparecieron fantásticas bandas alternativas, nuevos actos en el pop que hacían uso de su legado, pero ninguno de ellos fue tan bueno como los Stones. Considérese que hasta Tony Sánchez ha empezado a anunciar la segunda parte de su famoso "Up and down with The Rolling Stones", y pareciera que ya existen demasiados. Jurek Becker, the author of the first comic novel on the Holocaust, Jacob the Liar, and other highly acclaimed works, was one of West Germany's most famous exiles from the GDR. A survivor of the Shoah-his mother died in a Nazi death camp-and witness to the Soviet occupation of Eastern Europe, Becker endured most of the trials that Jews experienced in Europe from the onset of World War II to the end of the Cold War.

In the first biography of this fascinating figure, Sander Gilman tells the story of Becker's life in five worlds: the Polish-Jewish middle-class neighborhood where Becker was born; the Warsaw ghetto and the concentration camps where Becker spent his childhood; the socialist order of the GDR, which Becker idealized, resisted, and finally was forced to leave; the isolated world of West Berlin, where he settled down to continue his writing; and the new, reunified Germany, for which Becker served as both conscience and inspiration.

Gilman was close friends with Becker for nearly thirty years, and his biography is based on unprecedented access to both the man and his papers.
