This is the best casino chip price guide currently available. It is incomplete in that it does not include any of the Silver Strikes or metal slot token issues.

The price guide is a paperback, not a hardcover as listed in the title.

If you collect casino chips, or are just interested in the history of casinos and casino chips, then this book is a must. Every conceivable chip from just about every casino that ever existed is displayed. Chips are all listed with an estimated value which is very useful, especially for the casual collector like myself. There is a thorough discussion of chip characteristics and grading criteria. The research that went into this book is phenomenal. Mr. Campiglia has painstakingly documented sales, scarcity and the history of each and every chip. The book is well laid out with color photos of each chip and many photos of the casinos they came from. There are also many interesting factoids and anecdotes pertaining to the history of casinos in America. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and refer to it often as I build my collection. I give this book my highest recommendation.

A Successful Mix.......2000-05-08

Knowing Professor Dalzell and Mrs. Dalzell personally, I was incredibly curious to see how they blended the two seemingly connected but perhaps contrasting topics of George Washington and his home. Essentially, they were connected very successfully. The entire history of the home itself is told vividly with photographs, anecdotes, and objective descriptions of its development. Following, Washington's own personal, military, and political history is told in light of the times, and in the book's shining ability, in relation to the home itself. The Dalzell's cleverly-melded arguments and discussions leads the reader to a full knowledge of Mt. Vernon and its inspiring owner.

A story at the heart of the republic.......1998-11-13

I openned this book expecting to read a story about a house and how it was built. I was surprised, and impressed, to discover that what went on as Mt. Vernon took form was far more interesting than I had expected. This is not so much a book about a house as it is the story of how George Washington related to the slaves on whom he relied to execute his architecture. In other words, the story here reverberates far beyond the boundaries of the plantation. It went to the heart of the republic, and it goes to the heart of this nation. Slavery is encoded in our national DNA (sorry, Jefferson). The Dalzells make it clear that it is also mortared in the wood and plaster (cut and painted to look like stone) of our national edifice. Are you tormented, or at least intrigued, that a slaveowner could style himself father of a republic dedicated to freedom? Maybe Washington was, too. Find out. Visit Mt. Vernon, and do it by reading this book.

Mount Vernon was both architecturally innovative and a true mirror of Washington's feelings and mind. He never wrote an autobiography and his diaries consist largely of farm accounts, but in Mount Vernon, the authors write, "he produced a text from which it is possible to coax a remarkably full sense of his political convictions and of how, over time, they changed." For an Architect practicing in any era since Monticello was built, it has always been easy to enter into Jefferson's process--to commune with the models and the methods he sat down with as he designed (time and again) the house that he built as a monument to his ideas and his place in history. In part, this has been because he planned and drew much as we do today. We have the drawings. We know (and can quickly avert our eyes from) the form of labor. We can hold these two-dimensional maps up to the brilliant artifact, and be satisfied, with ourselves, that we have made a connection to the past. Mount Vernon, however, has had to wait for the Dalzells to read, for us, the full and fully three-dimensional process of its becoming. This beautifully written book brings to George Washington's home, a context of meaning and National symbolism that time and distance had almost obliterated. The book is a restoration project: and as such, it is a key compliment to the preservation work so ably executed over the years by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association. I heartily recommend this book to architects (amateur and professional), their clients (who may find comfort in learning that building has always been a trial), architectural historians, or anyone at all who is curious about the faithfulness of our democracy to the designs of one of its primary draftsmen.

A MUST READ FOR ALL INTERESTED IN JUVENILE JUSTICE.......2001-03-23

I highly recommend that this book be read by any person interested in solving the problems of youth crime. In this excellent, yet disturbing, book, Elikann discusses many relevant topics relating to, as the subtitle of the book describes, the "demonization" of our children by the law.

In exploring these topics, Elikann does not rely on his own opinions. He appears to have carefully researched the subject of juvenile crime and punishment and is evenhanded in his presentation of substantive quotes from many well-respected sources, representing opinions from all shades of the political spectrum.

I would make it a law that this book be read by every member of Congress and every member of every State Legislature BEFORE being allowed to vote on any bill that might impact juveniles. Maybe, these lawmakers would understand that the way to solve juvenile crime is not to declare war on juveniles, but to declare war on the causes of juvenile crime - poverty, ignorance, and abuse.

From Library Journal July, 1999 "Superpredator" is the chilling name currently given to the most severe juvenile offenders. Can they be saved? Is it right to lock them away for life? What went wrong? Elikann, an attorney, Court TV commentator, and chair of the Criminal Justice Section of the Massachusetts Bar Association, writes that these youths can indeed be helped, offering a 15-point plan based on intervention, strengthening families, rehabilitation, and role models. Chapter 5, which eerily connects with the reasons behind the Littleton shootings, merits extra attention. Elikann argues that there is no such thing as a motiveless crime and deals with the role shame and disrespect play in retribution. This book is well researched, straightforward, and unforgettable. Ill Mannered.......2005-11-13

There is little doubt that Manfred Mann's various incarnations deserve a book. There is also little doubt that it could be a good book. This, however, is not it. It is little more than an annotated discography, and as such is good. As a biography, history of the band it is of little use. It quickly becomes little more than a list of records, dates and chart placing. I saw Manfred Mann in Australia in the early 60s and they were sensational live. No mention of this tour in the book. In fact the Paul Jones era is over by page 39! apart from discographies.

Until someone comes along who can write well, research more than record listings and put it all together, we are still waiting for a biography of Manfred Mann.

Don't Bother.......2003-03-11

Much like Greg's Yardbird's book, this documentation on Mafred Mann is fundematally weak. Greg' prose, dare I call it that, is farily pedantic. This work is purley a catalogue of vinyl releases without any real insight into the creative process behind the music.

It is sad that there has not been a real book about this band - becasue this is NOT it!

A good read.......2002-08-22

This is a good primer for the Manfred Mann novice. Its full of informative tid bits and writtin in yeoman style. Photograph reproduction should be better and would make for a more serious addition to rock and roll literature. The biggest problem here is the publishers willingness to allow some of the worst layouts ANY publication will ever see. The reader is constantly taxed to put sentences together with photographs inserted in between the copy. This is editing 101 stuff, and should have never been allowed to go to print with such rookie mistakes in layout. It actually causes the reader to skip over copy so as to not get a headache trying to line up sentences between photographs. This may not sound like much now, but wait till you try and read this abomination of copy editing. Endnotes are not assembled with much forthought and is confusing to the reader who may like to pore over the back pages for facts and references. This is important because this is just the type of book that a fan (like myself)would wish to study for interesting facts in the book's back pages. I'll give it an A+ for effort, but as a major release for ANY publication this book is put together like a junior high school student was at the helm.

An OK overview of Mann and the MMEB.......2002-08-21

I bought this with excitement - but the content is less than expected. I applaud the guy who wrote it - someone finally wrote a book on Mann! But his material lacks depth, staying to a general history of the band and discography without too many details or personal histories. The text is spread painfully thin on many pages (as a graphic designer, I winced at how bad the layout is). I recommend this book for anyone yearning for info on Mann and the MMEB. But if you want to know the details - for example, where did the lyrics of 'Fat Nelly' come from or what inspired them? When and where did the band tour? Any tour anecdotes? Any personal reflections by Mann (or his present or former bandmates) on his career other than general platitudes?

This book was long overdue. A brilliant tribute payed to one of the most inovative and creative bands to emerge from the 60's Rock/Jazz/Blues boom. The detail is wonderful. Information on record sleeves Lp's,Ep's & 45's is a wealth of information alone, plus all the chronological info. and individual band members activities both pre and post Manfred Mann. A wonderful, spell binding and amazing read. This one is a must.
