In addition to 690 color photographs, Conroy has included lengthy alphabetical topmark lists, logo illustrations, value ranges, and in-depth sections on manufacturing and decoration techniques. 2003 values. AUTHORBIO: Barbara Conroy and her husband have collected restaurant china together for about 20 years. She spent more than six years in intense study for her two volumes on Restaurant China, and her careful research is evident in the two volumes. REVIEW: This 368-page volume begins with airline dinnerware, then moves on to ship and railroad china before examining military, western, and oriental motif china. Also covered is china used in casinos, amusement parks and fairgrounds, and company dining rooms, although the bulk of the book is devoted to airline, ship, and railroad dinnerware. A selection of manufacturers' pieces that include samples and employee gifts is provided.

Picturesque but not as helpful as expected!.......2007-05-14
I was very disappointed in this book. The colors in the photographs are beautiful. But as a reference for china patterns, it is seriously lacking. Except for a select few companies, the author seems to offer only one example rather than a more complete listing of the different china patterns used by each company over the years. There are some very nice photographs of railroad dining cars, steamship dining rooms, and airline meals being served, but again as a reference, the pictures do not show the china in these photos very clearly at all. In addition, the listings and descriptions of company logos as well as time-frames for china patterns are sometimes inaccurate and other times incomplete. As always, price guides become outdated quickly and would have been better in a separate addendum instead of being placed with text and captions throughout the book. I feel the book was too generalized. As a new collector I wanted help in identifying the different china patterns used by these transportation companies, when each pattern was used, and who manufactured them. All this book provided were scattered bits and pieces of that information. I do not intend to buy Volume II.
Book Not So Good.......2005-10-26
I was referred to this book for price and identification and was sadly disappointed to get the book and look up the china I had to find that it had some of the pieces and history but by NO MEANS is a complete guide. The China Company I had was in there but it didn't have the history from the year the company started but it did have the identification stamps from the year the company started go figure. The price guide consisted of showing a few pictures of china this particular company producted and gave a few prices. I couldn't believe it. The only reason I kept this book is because I was so busy I didn't get to return it before the 30 day return was over. Oh well I'll know better next time.
Best collector's reference around!.......2005-08-03
Barbara Conroy shares her extensive personal experience as a collector in this invaluable reference work. The photography is exceptional, with hundreds of examples of dinnerware pictured in each of the four main categories, along with copies of period advertisements and brochures. Each section also includes a painstakingly assembled collection of hundreds of logos to assist the collector in identifying the company the dinnerware was produced for. A must-have reference book for the serious restaurant, airline, ship and railroad china collector! Pair this book up with Volume 2 of the series and you can push all your other books to the back of the shelf, you won't need them anymore.
A welcome addition to the growing body of literature on RC.......1998-09-25
Barbara Conroy's new volume on restaurant china is a welcome addition to the growing body of literature regarding this largely American genre of utilitarian ceramic art.
Restaurant china represents an age of americana where restuarants cared enough to invest capital in individualized ceramic pieces that would advertise and represent their establishments. It is a practice that is being undertaken with less and less frequency in our time. Many manufacturers are no longer in business. It is accordingly a genre of increasing interest to collectors.
Conroy's book chronicles this fine craft form well. It offers a fairly exhaustive listing of topmarks and backstamps of interest to collectors. Substantial full-color illustrations are both informative and entertaining. Historical information as well as primer material about production processes are welcome inclusions.
The book's title is a bit midsleading, however. It is really a volume focusing primarily on airline, ship, and railroad china... with some coverage of military, western, government, oriental, sports-related, casino, department store and corporate pieces. Logo china manufactured for restaurants and diners receives is afforded little coverage. And non-logo pieces in stock patterns receive virtually no mention at all; the topic is beyond the scope of the book (though Conroy plans, I believe, additional volumes which may address these areas in further detail.)
Future volumes may benfit from incuding information on how to read backstamps to determine date of manufacture, information on stock patterns, and changes in ceramic form and decorative practices from the 1950's and 60's to the present day.
No one volume, however, can be expected to exhaustively cover all facets of this increasingly valued utilitarian art form. On the whole, Conroy's volume enriches the literature currently available to growing number of restaurant china fans and collectors in our culture.

In this second volume of her series for collectors, Barbara Conroy shares the details of hundreds of manufacturers that produced dinnerware for restaurant and transportation companies. The section on each manufacturer includes a detailed history, examples of the backstamps they used (along with date charts where applicable), copies of period advertisements, and *lots* of fantastic photographs showing the range of wares produced. This book is an invaluable reference, and a must-have for the serious commercial dinnerware collector!

The Best Restaurant China Research Book Available.......2002-01-03
I have been using both of Mrs. Conroy's books extensively for the past 2 months in preparing for the biggest research project I have ever done with restaurant, railroad, steamship, and hotel china. Book 2 on the date codes has been a lifesaver. It was not until about 2 months ago that I really realized just how much time and effort she had put into it making these possible. Having a handy reference (especially for backstamp dating of pieces) is beyond valuable. It is a "masterpiece."

A superb reference book for the serious collector / dealer. The appendix sections devoted to distributors, restaurants and hotel chains are special interest. Often collectors interests are in a narrow field - such a book helps to widen their appreciation of other collecting opportunities.

I took the class with Mary Sue Suit at the Naples Quilt Guild. It was fun and easy with Mary Sue there to demonstrate. We made beautiful Stars. I am a beginner quilter and would have found the directions a bit confusing if I had not seen it in person. Most quilters with some experience would probably love the short-cuts and hints Mary Sue had shown.
clever techniques, inspiring quilts.......2005-11-14
this book uses simple 45 degree triangles to make the eight-pointed stars. well, maybe not 'simple' in appearance, but simple in technique.
there are a variety of strip piecing suggestions to vary the designs of the stars--the sampler quilt has 12 variations. several of the quilt designs are shown in more than one color scheme, which i always like.
there are clever setting and border designs, some pieced, and these ideas could be used in other quilts, and their techniques are also simple to only moderately difficult.
none of the techniques are wasteful of fabric, which is something i appreciate. i can waste enough fabric making mistakes, i don't need techniques that increase the waste--to the profit of the fabric manufacturers.
a beginner could expand her skill level painlessly while producing dramatic quilts, and the intermediate or even advanced quilter could find some useful techniques and ideas.
this is primarily a book on piecing--the quilting and finishing instructions are minimal.
the author writes enjoyably, and has some good, common-sense tips and suggestions. one very sensible suggestion concerned ironing--the author, through experience, came to the conclusion that steam pressing or dry pressing can depend on your climate.
i would recommend this book to any quilter.

The treatment of sexually abused children between the ages of 7 and 12 present a unique clinical challenge. These victims are in the developmental phase of latency where post-traumatic discomfort and internal conflict are often manifested in self-destructive, sexually inappropriate, and aggressive behavior toward adults and peers. Often unresponsive to interventions that require direct verbal communication, these children need special therapeutic approaches to master feelings of shame, helplessness, responsibility, anger, and sadness, which are concomitant with sexual abuse and disclosure. Group treatment has been shown to be an important component of healing for these children.
This volume is the first book on the treatment of sexual abuse that is devoted exclusively to a group treatment approach. GROUP TREATMENT FOR SEXUALLY ABUSED CHILDREN considers the impact of sexual molestation and disclosure on latency-aged children and provides a step-by-step guide to a comprehensive program for victims and their non-offending caretakers. Establishing a therapeutic framework that enables both children and adults to deal with anxiety producing material, themes addressed in a sequence of progressive difficulty. More than a description of a program, this manual offers actual interventions to be used with children and their non-offending caretakers, including guidelines for anticipating and responding therapeutically to expected resistances.
The structured curriculum, which consists of ten modules, presents a variety of activities that assist children and adults to begin to identify and express their conflicts and feelings. Each module delineates the Purpose, Objectives, Therapeutic Considerations, Activities and Treatment Challenges for children and their caretakers. Each activity for children incorporates group topics for the caretakers' group which parallel the material presented in the children's group. This approach integrates the treatment, increasing the likelihood of a successful experience for the children. Illustrative case examples are offered to demonstrate how children and adults respond to the activities.
Unique features of this program include its attention to the important developmental tasks for children as well as the sequelae of sexual molestation; its respect for the ways in which boys and girls respond differently to sexual trauma; and its inclusion of over 40 original handouts for children and caretakers which may be photocopied for use in your practice.
An ideal resource, the structure and variety of original materials in this outstanding volume provide direction and focus for all therapists who are dedicated to the recovery of sexually abused children and their families. Further, many of the handouts are useful for individual and family treatment and, with some modifications, can also be used in work with adolescents.

This book is definitely intended to be used by profesionals! Very high leval vocabulary, but all very, very usefull stuff. I found the chapter on Adolesent and Child Abuse particularily usefull. There are case studies thrghout the book. It's a great refrence book, and even has some internal citation. It's a bit old, though.

Inside Edition!.......2005-11-26
After being thoroughly disappointed by Ayke Agus' depressing
tome "Heifetz As I Knew Him", I was a bit worried that
this book was going to be the same way. I was way wrong!
Sherry Kloss, in under 200 pages, gives such a look into a period of 12 years here in Southern California, which were the waning years of Heifetz's life and career, that it's almost as if the reader was living life alongside her. I'll be frank in saying that unless you're a violinist or familiar with Heifetz the man (beyond his recordings), this isn't the book for you.
There has always been a good deal of sordid talk that goes along with Heifetz - "great musician, rotten and abusive tyrant",
and so forth. Luckily, this book allays some of that stuff a bit - or at least gives some understanding as to why Heifetz was often perceived in such a light. He set very high standards for himself (and everyone associated with him). Sherry Kloss was one of the few people Heifetz trusted and genuinely liked - and she understood him for who, and what, he was (faults aside).
This book contains many good photographs from the Heifetz USC Class Halloween parties and music-making events, and also some of Kloss' own recital programs (which Heifetz helped her plan).
If there's any fault to this book, it's that it is too short.
Heifetz Remembered.......2004-02-08
Sherry Kloss honors her teacher, sharing the reality of the great master. She experienced the "whole man/musician" who mentored her, and shares it joyously with those of us who live vicariously through the pages with her. This is a fine work for aspiring musicians and those of us who have aspired!
Jascha Heifetz Remembered.......2003-05-02
I highly recommend "Jascha Heifetz Through My Eyes," a book written by Sherry Kloss. Ms. Kloss was so fortunate to have had such a close relationship with Mr. Heifetz, and it is described so touchingly in this book. All lovers of music-and especially of the violin-will find this book a joy to read. Once I started, I couldn't put it down.
In addition, I enjoyed Sherry Kloss' renditions of Heifetz' transcriptions, which she provides on her two compact disks: "Lost and Found Treasures of the Heifetz Legacy" and "Forgotten Gems from the Heifetz Legacy." The book and the two compact disks should be in the library of every violin enthusiast.
A Different Aspect of the Violinist/Teacher.......2003-04-30
I have read several biographies of Jascha Heifetz, and this is the only one that made me wish that I had met him. Sherry Kloss was able to see beyond the personal idiosyncracies of this consummate violinist to the essential good that was within him. The book is also interesting for the insights it gives the reader into what it was like to be in Heifetz's violin class in the mid 1970's. Unlike some other books and articles I've read about Heifetz, this one did not leave me feeling depressed. It should be on the reading list of anyone interested in the life of Jascha Heifetz or in the study of the violin.
A Must Read.......2003-04-30
Sherry's book brings a personal, human view to Jascha Heifetz. She was gives us insight to a kindness and compassionate side that few may have known. Not only is the book extremely entertaining, but for the reader, we are allowed to have a look in on the master class teachings, the daily life at USC, and the parties held at the Heifetz home.
Sherry allows us to see the care her teacher had not only in his work, for which he gave everything, but the concern he had for the welfare of his students. He was a very generous person in all respects.
I laughed out loud at several passages. The imagry of the fun loving, full of life young violinst, meeting the formal, reserve of the great artist. You must read it, and enjoy it as much as I did!
The pictures are also an additional treat.
