      Book Description

"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the miraculous."
      --Albert Einstein
Where do miracles happen? Nearly a hundred wonderful true stories in this book abundantly testify that they happen everywhere, all the time. "Sometimes," writes the author, "we recognize one by a tiny quiver in the pit of our stomach, a prickle of tears, our hearts lifting up." And sometimes they simply bowl us over.
A destitute mother feeds her children for a week from a mysteriously refilling pot. A rainbow celebrates a child's release from suffering. An angel protects a teenager from terror in a hayloft. A medic at an isolated accident site suddenly finds the equipment needed to save a life. An imperfect heart is spontaneously made whole.
Many of the stories here came from people who had read Joan Wester Anderson's bestseller Where Angels Walk. They showed, she says, that "the greatest and most profound adventures with Him were taking place not at the feet of distant gurus but in our own kitchens, our cars, wherever hearts were open. Such happenings were far too precious to hide in my files." Instead she shares with us a book of wonders: amazing, uplifting, inspiring.
"In short, unadorned stories, Anderson retells fresh accounts of modern miracles...She emphasizes that miracles most often happen in partnership with a loving, attentive God; and her prevailing message of hope is irresistible."
      --Publishers Weekly

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book to share with children.......2007-10-15

This is my third Joan Wester Anderson book. My son and I read one of the stories each night before bed, we've been doing this for about a year now and it is such a great way to finish our day. The stories have strengthened our faith and given us some great discussion openers. The stories are pretty short and easy to read in a 5-10 minute time frame. This is so inspiring and will truly lift the spirit. It is a great gift for any holiday.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome & Inspiring.......2006-04-17

"Where Miracles Happen" is a beautiful collection of true stories - all involving either prayers answered, angels, &/or other amazing, awe-inspiring miracles.

As I read on, I kept thinking of the statement "God works in mysterious ways" - and this is quite evident in each & every one of the stories presented.

Overall, I found this book to be an inspiring, interesting, easy read - the pages seemed to turn themselves! So, I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in the topics of angels, prayers answered, and/or other evidences of God's miracles in the lives of "everyday" men & women - you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars We are not alone and not on our own.......2006-03-20

This is a very inspiring book we can rely on when we need the reassurance we are not alone and that our life has special meaning. There are numerous, uplifting short stories covering a broad spectrum of situations where divine assistance seems to be the only logical explanation for the events. This read is potentially life-changing.

      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2005-09-04

Every so often you come upon a book that stirs within you emotions so deep that it almost takes your breath away; this is what happens in this outstanding work, "Where Miracles Happen."
Author Joan Wester Anderson shares the stories of people, like you and me, who were touched with the miraculous. Stories of healings, life's saved, changed and left knowing they were kissed by a God who loves them. Their stories will leave you with a feeling of complete awe, deep reverence and expected hope and will turn your eyes once again to the One who made you.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. For the Believer it is an affirmation of their faith, a building block to draw upon and a salve for their soul. To the un-believer it should certainly be an eye-opener and if nothing more leave them with some thought provoking material. This is a must have, a book that should grace everyone's library; a book of faith and hope that can be read and enjoyed time and time again.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring, Uplifting, and Heavenly!!.......2002-05-30

Where Miracles Happen is a wonderful book, which will warm your heart, bring tears to your eyes and leave you with such a warm feeling all over! Ms. Anderson has managed once again, to capture the essence of the miraculous in everyday life. With over 50 different accounts of true encounters with heavenly beings, one knows that God loves us, we are watched over, protected, and guided constantly throughout our lives. Sometimes, as shown by several of the stories, our deceased loved ones are with us and also watching over us.

Help is always available, one just has to ask for it, as the story illustrated of the mother who did not have enough money to feed her children and food miraculously appeared, or the child caught in the snowstorm and could not find her way home, yet was guided by a supposed neighbor, who was later found out to be sick that entire week, or the gentleman who was protected driving when his mother invoked safety prayers from him and avoided a collision where a dozen cars lost control, yet no one was injured.

There are also stories of healings and of our loved ones sending signs and messages to reassure us that they are indeed in a place of love and that they are indeed all right. It seems that their messages and signs bring such healing and release to those that they have left behind.

These stories will inspire you and lift you up if you are feeling blue. Sometimes we need gentle reminders from above, that we are loved and cherished and not forgotten, even though we ourselves may think so.

I love keeping Ms. Anderson's books near by and randomly opening them and reading passages after a long and particularly stressful day! I would also encourage anyone to check out Ms. Anderson's website, where one can subscribe to a true angel story of the week!

This book would be great comfort to anyone who has lost a loved one, as well as to those who are experiencing turmoil in their lives. The title of the book does indeed live up to its name and the miracles presented in this book are phenomenal!

      Highly recommended!!

About: Recipes, facts and history about famous and nostalgic products.

Pros: Interesting, easy read, short chapters. Includes resources and bibliography

Cons: Writing can be repetitive. Brand names are used ad nauseam, which leads me to wonder if Mr. Green was being compensated by the trademark owners.

This is a fun book with all kinds of trivia, stories about forgotten favorites (Erector Sets) and hard to find goodies (old fashioned candies). It has a huge variety of home recipes for lotions, soaps, balms, antacids and more and the recipes appear to be fairly simple. It's light, full of photos and easy to read.

I picked it up for the recipes but have found it kind of hard to resist. I recently read it out loud to my husband on a trip to the ER -- trying to distract him and keep us both awake while we waited for him to be admitted (he's fine now). After we got home, he swiped it and is reading it himself.

If you like places like Cracker Barrel's old country stores, you'll really get a kick out of this book!

4 out of 5 stars Sharp styles from Jo Sharp.......2002-01-01

Although I hadn't knitted much of anything for many years, I found Jo Sharp's book easy to use. She has rated each pattern as to difficulty so that I wouldn't choose one which would frustrate me due to my lack of experience. Her styles are attractive and do not look dated even in 2001.

I just completed "Jessica" for my daughter-in-law and she absolutely loves her sweater. Now my son wants a sweater as well. The best compliment for me is that people say that the sweater looks professionally made, not like many other homemade items which have the "fireside touch" (you know, nice, but who would really want to be seen wearing them?)!

One drawback is that only Jo Sharp yarns are used. By using the weight and the yardage, any yarn store can help you select comparable yarns. But I would be reluctant to do that. Her soft New Zealand wool is far superior to US wool. Acrylics might be a suitable substitute, but they tend to pill up more readily.

You get what you pay for.

4 out of 5 stars Solid effort, not to my taste though.......2000-11-22

Jo Sharp's Knitted Sweater Style may be just what some knitters want -- three dozen quality patterns. Most are multi-color intarsia efforts (Sharp's signature) for advanced knitters. There are several single color efforts suitable for advanced beginners and up.

My reservations about buying this book are threefold. First, I tend to shy away from expensive books that are just patterns. Unlike Meg Swansen's Knitting, this book doesn't have much in the way of technique tips or other timeless hints that I can use in my general knitting. Secondly, published in 1997, the designs are already looking a little dated. Third, there are better books out there for inspiration on colorwork. Kaffe Fassett's books are much more likely to provoke artistry. Sally Melville's Styles is a much more helpful guide for color combining and stash reduction.

So, a book to enjoy and buy if the designs really catch your fancy.

5 out of 5 stars Jo Sharp has real talent.......1999-11-05

Jo Sharp appeared on the American scene with her incredible collections of new, inventive, beautiful designs and a wonderful line of knitting yarns. In this book, she can take a conservative style and through stitch-work make it quite lively and appealing, as well as an adventure to make. Other sweaters are bold intarsia, quite striking and unusual. Nothing is too difficult, and her wool is perfect for her designs -- a luxurious and durable wool in an ever growing number of colors. Knitted Sweater Style is her first hardbound book, combining many of her sweaters previously available as leaflets. Her newest book, Knitting Bazaar, is even more stunning -- her style, already creative, blossoms in the new book. Both would be an excellent addition to any knitter's library.

5 out of 5 stars an exellent text for style, colour, technique, and fit........1998-05-24

Jo Sharp has given us a knitting resource that is useful for the beginner, intermediate, and advanced knitter. The wonderful use of colour and styling make the simplest of patterns a very wearable work of art. Clear and concise directions also make the working of these sweaters gratifying and fun. Some of the charts are somewhat difficult to read because of the small size that was reproduced in the book, but fortunately we live in an age of advanced photocopying.

Jo,s original use of colour, styling, and fashion have made for a delightful book of knitting. she has created terrific designs for all tastes and abilities.

                                Book Description

Building a house for one's parents is a time-honored way for many architects to begin their careers, to showcase experimental ideas, or simply to honor the people who raised them. From these houses we can gain clearer insights about the designers' ideas on form, space, style, and place. These houses offer rich insight into the client-architect relationship, and they give elegant architectural expression to ideas about home, family, and childhood memories. A House for My Mother features 25 houses designed over the last 50 years by various architects for their mothers, fathers, in-laws, and extended families. Included are the well-known works of recognized designers as well as early works from promising young architects. Extensive interviews with the architects and their families reveal the joys and difficulties of these very personal commissions. The houses offer innovative and affordable designs, in a variety of styles and building materials, for homes ranging from city dwellings to beach houses and mountain retreats. As the architects were generally given broad control over the design, these homes showcase the ideas that characterize their work. The architects in this collection include Natalye Appel, Peter Bohlin, Walter Chatham, Charles Gwathmey, Steven Izenour, Donna Kacmar, Robert Kahn, Mark and Jean Larson, Joanna Lombard and Denis Hector, Robert Luchetti, Suzanne Martinson, Richard Meier, Charles Menefee, Mark Simon, Laurinda Spear and Bernardo Fort-Brescia, Robert Venturi, and Paul Westlake.

This collection profiles houses architects have built for their families. The book is interesting on an informational level (lots of ideas for those dreaming of designing their own homes) - but what is unique, is the interplay in each case between human and design elements. A rare book that succeeds on the level of story as well as information.

                                    Book Description

Based on personal accounts by birthing women and their medical attendants, Brought to Bed reveals how childbirth has changed from colonial times to the present. Judith Walzer Leavitt's study focuses on the traditional woman-centered home-birthing practices, their replacement by male doctors, and the movement from the home to the hospital. She explains that childbearing women and their physicians gradually changed birth places because they believed the increased medicalization would make giving birth safer and more comfortable. Ironically, because of infection, infant and maternal mortality did not immediately decline. She concludes that birthing women held considerable power in determining labor and delivery events as long as childbirth remained in the home. The move to the hospital in the twentieth century gave the medical profession the upper hand. Leavitt also discusses recent events in American obstetrics that illustrate how women have attempted to retrieve some of the traditional women--and family--centered aspects of childbirth.

I wish the author had continued the review until the present time (or at least until the 1980's when the book was original published.)I would venture to say that the change in childbirth from 1950 to the present is just as great as the change from 1750-1950. The author does a good job of not letting her own personal biases influence the telling of the story. She also is thorough without being so acsdemic that the book is unreadable. It helped me to view childbirth in a new way. I have been blessed to have delivered all of my children in the 21st century, with many options available and safety at it's highest. It's easy to forget how dangerous childbirth used to be, and how limited options were for most women (either because of lack of funds, or because there was only one midwife or doctor available in their geographical area.)

2 out of 5 stars Could have been about 125 pages shorter.......2007-03-19

While the author makes good use of quotations and historical information, so much of each chapter is repeated that I would liken it to reading while banging ones head against a wall. If the intent of the author was that each chapter could stand alone, then it can be considered a resounding success. However, if the author meant it to be read as a full book, then barring a reader with horrible short-term memory, each chapter could have been condensed to roughly 8 pages.
I can see how this book is an invaluable resource to those who need citations for a paper/thesis concerning childbirth. The author has exhaustively researched historical records and has faithfully cited them, but to those wishing to read an interesting analysis of the historical change in American childbirth - beware. My suggestion is to read the introduction, the last chapter, the epilogue and any passages that are merely direct quotations. It does not speak very highly of the author that the most interesting parts of the book were in fact copied from the writings of others.

Thank goodness for today's painkillers!!! This book was well written, thoroughly researched, with plenty of data, graphs, pictures, and personal accounts going back to the 1700s. A fascinating book, both just to read and for research. It was very helpful with my thesis, and for an interesting read, if you are interested in history, this is a great choice. Kudos to the author for a well-done book!

Judith Walzer Leavitt has proven herself to be a tour-de-force in the world of study of women's health throughout US history. This is one of the many books she has edited and contributed to, but I find it to be one of her best. Each article is a jewel offering a glimpse into a world not often revealed - women experiencing the changing attitudes of a society that often did not offer them the choices they deserved. From social childbirth in the colonial era to the twilight sleep of the 20th century, Leavitt has managed to collect articles that tell a story in the best historical tradition.

David Hajdu (pronounced HAY-doo), the prizewinning author of the magisterial jazz biography Lush Life, now steam-cleans the legend of the lost folk generation in Positively 4th Street: The Lives and Times of Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Mimi Baez Fariña, and Richard Fariña. What a ripping read! It's like an invitation to the wildest party Greenwich Village ever saw. You feel swept up in the coffeehouse culture that transformed ordinary suburban kids into ragged, radiant avatars of a traditional yet bewilderingly new music. Hajdu's sociomusical analysis is as scholarly as (though less arty than) Greil Marcus's work; he deftly sketches the sources and evolving styles of his ambitious, rather calculating subjects, proving in the process that genius is not individual--it's rooted in a time and place. Hajdu says Dylan heisted many early tunes (e.g., "Maggie's Farm" from Pete Seeger's "Down on Penny's Farm"): "Dylan [told] a radio interviewer that he felt as if his music had always existed and he just wrote it down ... [in fact], much of his early work had existed as other writers' melodies, chord structures, or thematic ideas." But Dylan and company made it all their own, and Hajdu vividly evokes the scenes they made.

Positively 4th Street is very much a group portrait. When something amazing happens, Hajdu puts you right there. The unknown Baez barefoot in the rain, bedazzling the Newport Jazz Festival and becoming immortal overnight. The irresistibly irresponsible Fariña talking his folk-star wife out of shooting him dead with his own pistol. The "little spastic gnome" Dylan transmogrified into greatness onstage, bashing Joan with the searing lyrics of "She Belongs to Me." A stoned Fariña advising Dylan to cynically hitch his wagon to Joan's rising star and "start a whole new genre. Poetry set to music, but not chamber music or beatnik jazz, man... poetry you can dance to."

The book is as delectably gossipy as Vanity Fair (one of Hajdu's employers). Richard married the exceedingly young beauty Mimi and helmed their career, but he might have dumped her for big sister Joan, whose madcap humor and verbal wit harmonized with his--except that he ineptly killed himself on a motorcycle first. Bob mumblingly courted both sisters, but when he cruelly taunted the insecure Joan, Mimi yanked his hair back until he cried. The account of Bob and Joan's musical-erotic passion is first-rate music history and uproarious soap opera. Hajdu's research is prodigious--even Fariña's close chum Thomas Pynchon granted interviews--and his anecdotes are often off-the-cuff funny: "[Rock manager Albert Grossman] was easy to deal with.... It wasn't till maybe two days after you would see Albert that you'd realize your underwear had been stolen." Full disclosure: Hajdu was one of my long-ago bosses at Entertainment Weekly, but that's certainly not why I heartily endorse this book. It's scholarship with a human face, akin to "poetry you can dance to." --Tim Appelo

                                      Book Description

When twenty-five-year-old Bob Dylan wrecked his motorcycle near Woodstock in 1966 and dropped out of the public eye, he was already recognized as a genius, a youth idol with an acid wit and a barbwire throat; and Greenwich Village, where he first made his mark, was unquestionably the center of youth culture.

In Positively 4th Street, David Hajdu recounts the emergence of folk music from cult practice to popular and enduring art form as the story of a colorful foursome: not only Dylan but also his part-time lover Joan Baez -- the first voice of the new generation; her sister Mimi -- beautiful, haunted, and an artist in her own right; and Mimi's husband, Richard Fariña, a comic novelist (Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up to Me) who invented the worldly-wise bohemian persona that Dylan adopted -- some say stole -- and made his own.

A national bestseller in hardcover, acclaimed as "one of the best books about music in America" (Jonathan Yardley, The Washington Post), Positively 4th Street is that rare book with a new story to tell about the 1960s -- about how the decade and all that it is now associated with were created in a fit of collective inspiration, with an energy and creativity that David Hajdu has captured on the page as if for the first time.

My Hadju has very little sympathy for any of the characters in this narrative. In his view, Bob is a self-centered jerk, Joan is priggish, Mimi is callow and Richard is a self-promoting charlatan who probably needed medical intervention. Mr. Hadju's only sympathies lie with Mimi who is little and beautiful and sorely used. Oh please. What I found missing was any sense of forgiveness for just how young they were. Only Richard can be held accountable for his caddish behavior because he was older and should have known better. The others were all painfully young and their behavior, reprehensible, naive, touching and all should be interpreted through the highly charged haze of youth. I doubt that anyone's life could withstand this level of strutiny at the age of 22.

I am not a fan of Mr Hadju's writing style, but the book is packed with information.

American folk in its both in its development and maturation held the same drama and pathos as any other American music that fused with social movement. The figures that Hajdu chose to focus on in his excellent book became very influential artists of the time, Dylan even attaining a cult-like status.

Like any biography of young people it is filled with betrayal, misunderstandings and bruised egos. As they are portrayed, Dylan and Farina were by far the larger and more fragile of the egos and they hint of the "me" generation's self-importance. The Baez sisters remained "truer" to folk, being less inclined to wed it to rock and other styles. The tragic death of Richard Farina is one of the many turning points in this book that treads lightly on nostalgia. The genius and fallibility of the four figures is portrayed distinctly and without foreshadowing what will become of them outside of this exciting time when music moved people to change the nation.

                                      3 out of 5 stars A disappontment.......2006-12-29

Positively 4th Street had received adulatory reviews. I looked forward to reading it, but was enormously disappointed. The book tells of the tangled relationships among four young people. Nobody comes out looking especially well. My experience has been that people in their twenties often do not behave commendably in their romantic lives. By focusing on these relationships, the book has the distasteful smell of dirty laundry.

Secondly, by presenting four interlocking biographies, the book implicitly equates the four lives covered. Unfortunately, there was an enormous difference in stature among Bob Dylan and Richard Farina and Joan and Mimi Baez. In order to make a go of his book the author must exaggerate the flaws of the mighty and minimize those of the lowly. This authorial imperative makes for an unfair book.

Finally, Mr. Hajdu has a fine magisterial voice - even when he does not know a thing about the subject at hand, like harmonica playing, for example. If he gets every fact wrong on that, how can he be trusted on other matters?

5 out of 5 stars Hero worshipers, stay away.......2006-11-21

Though he is almost, but not quite, forgotten today, Richard Farina was once a hot property. He wrote a novel, "Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up to Me," that swept the college campuses; and he and his wife, Mimi Baez, recorded two albums, "Celebrations for a Grey Day" and "Reflections in a Crystal Wind" that were both artistic and commercial successes.
Farina was ambitious for much more. He wanted to be bigger than Bob Dylan. He wanted Dylan's fame, Dylan's sales, Dylan's girlfriend, Dylan's respect and a motorcycle like Dylan's.
David Hajdu's meticulously detailed "Positively 4th Street" tells a tale that might just as well have been called "Grabbing for the Brass Ring."
Nobody ever came closer more times without getting it than Farina.
It all started with Carolyn Hester. When the "folk revival" began in Boston in the 1950s, the beautiful Hester was an early coffee house star. If anyone was going to break out to national fame, Hester would have seemed the favorite.
But bursting out of the pack of unknowns to surpass her came Joan Baez, with a bell-like voice and, in Hajdu's interpretation, lots of luck.
Farina, a charming schemer, was on another track but he latched onto Hester, moving from first meeting to marriage in 18 days.
From then on, "Positively 4th Street" is an appalling and almost Byzantine account of the ambitious and the unscrupulous climbing over each other's backs for the brass ring.
Baez caught it first. She helped Dylan, who treacherously overtopped her. Farina made his bid, dumping Hester and pursuing Baez.
But he and Dylan were both also angling for Joan's beautiful young sister Mimi. The sisters are supposed to be the models for the story in the Lovin' Spoonful song "DId You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind?" but Hajdu debunks that and some other rock and roll myths, notably the one about Dylan being booed off the stage at the Newport Folk Festival for playing a Stratocaster.
A witty writer, Hajdu never seems to be caught off balance in all this confusion. A typical example of his waspish reporting is this line about Farina and his friend Alfredo Dopico: "Richard and Alfredo were largely redundant: of Cuban ancestry, about the same age and size, strong-featured, impetuous, and volatile, they were both treacherously fond of beautiful women, marijuana, and Richard Farina."
In this crowd, Hajdu sees more clay feet than a shoeshine boy at the Congressional barber shop, but he never confuses that with the impact of the music on the rest of us.
It doesn't hurt, for dramatic purposes, that Farina wrote more than once about death on a motorcycle and with almost perfect timing got killed on one the day of the booksigning party for "Been Down So Long." (Meticulously, Hajdu clears up the misconception that it was on the book's release day; that was two days earlier.)
Only Mimi Farina comes out of this book as an appealing human being.
Hero worshipers should stay away. Music lovers will be fascinated.

folk-rock music of my youth. Dylan's work has endured of course & Don't Think Twice & Blowin in the Wind has spoken to every generation since.
From the book I got the the impression that Bob Dylan is somewhat limited intellectually. He spouts nonsense & speaks thru his lyrics & is truly a musical genius. He speaks against wealth privledge & the establishement but embraces it. He is exempt. He cannot string two sentences together & apparently was a lousy interview. In the end he has alienated all his old friends from his folk days, while continuing to gather more fans.
Joan Baez story goes beyond the anti-war protest she is known for & delves into her music & relationship with Dylan. It was (a least to her) more than just a affair. She really did love him & furthered his career at the expense of her own. A totally amoral character he discarded her as he eventually does to all his relationship while denying his past, simply a boring Jewish middle class kid form Minnesota.
Mr. Hajda also covers at length Mimi (Joan's younger sister) & Richard Farina. His life was a shooting star, a brief career with much promise. Mimi was along for the ride marrying him at 17. His potential brillance was cut short needlessly & stupidly.
The reader does a good job of imitating Dylan but other attempts not so good. Recommended reading for a good feel for the folk, night club, beat scene of the late 50's & early 60's.

1 out of 5 stars UGGH, more anti Israel Propaganda from a Feminist.......2007-02-12

This book, is an easy read, not terribly intellectual or well researched. However, the most glaring issue is the one that is not discussed. How an one be a feminist, gay, and demand equal rights when non of the aforementioned would be allowed in "Palestine". When gay men are hung in the town square, and free speech is not allowed, it is easy to critique Israel and call this contry names, and you are free to do so. However, the real victims of the Intifada are not only the Israeli's, but the Palestinians who had to live under the rape of Palestine by Arafat, (Suha his "wife" is now living in a 15,000.00 dollar a day hotel suite in Paris), and the current rape of the land by HAMAS. Ms. Gluk should try to change the ways of terrorists and those who plunder public funds, and then lets address peace.

4 out of 5 stars An honest and telling account of the author's travels........1998-09-05

This was a wonderful book. Gluck, an American raised as a Jew, traveled to Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza on several occassions during the Intifada. This is her account. She gives an admittingly Western feminist perspective, but is very careful not to impose her own assumptions and beliefs on the situation. Instead she tells it like it is.

Gluck tells the reader of the conditions the Palestinians have had to put up with under Israeli occupation. She shows the variety of ways the Palestinians have responded, paying particular attention to women's roles and the way women's lives have changed during the occupation and the uprising (Intifada).

A good book to read if you want to get a beginning perspective of the Middle East conflict. This particularly gives an account that is much different from the American media's. Highly reccommended.
