This was written by three of my former professors at the School of Taxation at the University of Florida. The text mirrors why I enjoyed their classes and took 38 hours under them. It puts a rather complicated IRS Code interpretation into easy to understand practical applications.

Difficult To Understand The Main Issues.......2005-06-19

This text includes cases that involve a lot of the accounting numbers without a lot of explanation about the tax principles that were used in deriving the numbers. The best supplement I have found is the Eighth Edition Federal Income Taxation supplement by Stephen Lind and David Hudson put out by the Black Letter Series by the West Group recommended by my professor which was written by one of the authors of the casebook.

Outstanding Baby Book.......2001-09-20

Each time I near the birth of a baby, I search for the perfect book to record all the precious events they will experience during babyhood. As the birth of my fourth neared, I decided I needed something limited to the first year only. That was what first interested me it this selection. I especially enjoyed the blank pages so that each month can be started on any day of the month, rather that the first. My favorite part, however, was a space on each page for a photograph of my baby during that particular month. A minimal amount of planning was needed as some months are set up for vertical prints. The spaces are alternated, however so that there isn't a bulky area in the book when it is full. I was so pleased when it was complete that I purchased the same book for my fifth son! It is far less complicated than some of the other baby books I have seen, which is a bonus to me as I have less time to fill in one as I did with my first son. I was pleased too that scripture in included throughout. It is my standing choice for a baby book!

My wife and I have enjoyed capturing all the "first" memories from our son's first year. The book has a wide variety of events and experiences to log from first vacation to memories from birthdays, christening and holidays. There is ample space to log milestones and monthly activities. We are looking forward to showing our son this book and remembering that first year that went by so quickly. The only problem now is that we have filled the book with so many pictures and clippings that it won't fit back into the book case, but that is probably just an indication that it was well filled out.

Not useful.......2004-10-07

This book is pretty much useless if you're looking for info on how to build a dulcimer. Only about 60 pages of it actually talks about dulcimer making/repair. The rest is a long winded history/bio of Homer Ledford. Some of that is a bit interesting from an historical/cultural perspective, but the author beats it to death. Homer wanted the book to be just on how to build and care for a dulcimer; the rest was the author's idea. Dean Kimball's book on dulcimer making is better, although still lacking in some areas. This book has no patterns or plans, few useful photos, and is weak in what instruction it does provide. There are a few useful ideas but not worth the price of the book.

Charley Goes to War is an account of the Second World War told through the experiences of an RCAF airman from Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Glen Hancock takes us from the streets of Wolfville on September 4, 1939, to Canada’s training camps, and from there to his first operation out of No. 408 Goose Squadron until the final defeat of Nazi Germany and his return to Canada in 1945.

Hancock’s memoir maintains a refreshing balance between the headline events of the war and daily life in training and on air force bases. The feel of the uniforms, the specifics of insignia, RCAF lingo and all the nuts and bolts of serving queen and country are made tangible in these pages. Hancock also details the less talked about highlights of volunteering: the perks of first class train travel, the guilty pleasure of being able to see the Canadian countryside and the sites of English and European history, and his opportunity to attend the University of Edinburgh.

On his often interrupted journey toward becoming an airman, Hancock trained at bases across Canada including Prince Rupert, Brandon, Ottawa and Torbay, before traveling by boat from New York to Scotland in 1944 and eventually operating out of No.408 Goose Squadron at Linton-on-Ouse in Yorkshire. Charley Goes to War combines a wizened retrospective on the highlights of the Second World War with a sharply individual sense of what it meant at the time. Hancock describes the formation of his bomber crew, operational procedure, his first "sortie," the equipment and everyday life on the squadron in a style both humorous and elegant.

Despite the atmosphere and ideologies upon which the war was based, Hancock recognizes that many who fought were not entirely cognizant of the holocaust while it was going on. In a chapter entitled "The Horror of Belsen Death Camp" Hancock relives the trip he made to Belsen immediately after its liberation in 1945 and his witnessing of the Nazi’s extermination project at the heart of the struggle to which he and so many other men and women were devoted.

This book is Smyth-sewn paperback. The text was typeset by Andrew Steeves in Quadraat and printed on Rolland Zephyr Laid paper.

THE George Herbert Mead biography.......2000-04-08

I would not have found this book but for the fact that the author (Gary Cook) is my advisor, professor, and friend here at Beloit College. He introduced me to the works of Mead, as well as the other great American pragmatists (C.S. Peirce, William James, etc). A better professor than writer, but for any who interested in the life of Mead, this book is a must.

Agostino Agazzari (c.1580-c.1642) has long been recognized as one of the most prominent theorists of the early Baroque. The enduring fame of his 1607 treatise on the basso continuo has, however, overshadowed his equally significant contributions as a composer. And for all his renown, relatively little has been written about his professional career in Siena. This book not only provides the first comprehensive study of his life and sacred works, it also opens a window on musical culture in Siena during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Through the use of archival materials, the author documents Agazzari's long association with the Sienese Cathedral and furnishes valuable information on the personnel, repertory, and performance practices there. She argues for a reassessment of the influences that shaped the composer's style and challenges the generally held view that Sienese culture stagnated after the fall of the Republic in 1555. The book contributes significantly to our knowledge of musical life in the Tuscan `City of the Virgin'.

Honest Look at Historical Tragedy.......2000-08-07

Perhaps the best thing about this book is how truly believable it is. Not that anyone would think the author was lying about his experiences, but Hannam's descriptions of people are so true to life it is hard to believe anyone could make them up. He tells about his life as a jewish boy in Nazi Germany, and how he escaped to England before the outbreak of war. But unlike many other such books, Hannam makes no attempt to portray himself as a great hero, nor the Germans as wholly evil. Everyone's virtues and faults are laid out in the open. The result is in many ways even more chilling. We see how a great nation can descend into hell. I only wish the author had covered more of his life after 1940, when he was in Britain. As it is, the book ends somewhat abruptly.
