A "richly anecdotal and wonderful" slim, pocket-size guide now updated to include all the newest hot spots on the Big Apple jazz scene
Jazz Guide: New York City is the only comprehensive guide to jazz in the Big Apple–now revised and expanded to include all the newest hot spots on the scene. Whether uptown or downtown, big bands or subway soloists, it’s all here. Drop in on the elegant clubs where legendary headliners call the tunes, then hit a hole-in-the wall joint to hear scrappy young bands play all night. Jazz Guide: New York City profiles more than eighty venues where you can experience the best of every kind of jazz–from traditional large ensembles to smoking combos, avant-garde to hard-bop, old-school to DJ-driven, acoustic to electronic–as well as closely related music from around the world, including the drum cultures of the Caribbean, Latin America, and West Africa.
Beyond the clubs, the guide explores music festivals, specialty stores, and jazz lore, including visits to Harlem and 52nd Street in their heydays, the famous bridge where Sonny Rollins moonlighted, and the neighborhood Louis Armstrong called home.

An Entertaining Lesson.......2007-06-22
This book is more than a guide. It's an entertaining lesson in jazz history. The author writes like he's talking to an expert and/ or a novice at the same time. Dollar's expertise is also completely down to earth, often relating stories and anecdotes, which really draws in the reader and gives us a feeling for the depth of the subject.

Right On!.......2004-12-12
A great resource for the conoisseur as well as the jazz illiterate (like me!). This book is a terrific guide to some fabulous joints, and is fun to read, too. Well done!
THIS BOOK SWINGS!!!.......2004-06-03
If you're planning to check out some jazz in NYC, my advice is simple: get this book. Dollar knows his stuff, and the book is so smartly written that it's worth a read even if you don't know the difference betweeen Bill Evans and Gil Evans. And if you're into cutting-edge jazz, you'll find some destinations here that will send you to postbop heaven.
Very Good.......2004-01-15
As a jazz fan, drummer and bandleader who's listened around Manhattan for 28 years and played around Manhattan for 16 years, I'm very impressed with this book. It's extremely well researched, the production quality is high, and the quality of the writing is so good that it makes an interesting read apart from its functionality as a guidebook. My only reservation is that it leaves out a couple of obvious jazz clubs and includes some non-jazz clubs. But that aside, I'm astonished at how much the author knows about his subject, and how much I was able to learn that I didn't already know. Very highly recommended.

Case Background.......2003-09-17
The major categories of mass communication are presented with key cases under each. Prior to getting into the various cases, background on the legal system is explained. The readers are told about public communication and the law in general. There is an overview of the first amendment to the U.S. constitution. Logically flowing out of that is discussion of issues directly related such as libel and privacy. Graphically the design is such that the content is easy to digest. The book goes on to provide sections on intellectual property, corporate speech, advertising, and journalism. Matters of accessibility are included as well. This book is an excellent overview to mass media law.

Leading cross stitch designer Sue Cook has turned her outstanding talents to a month-by-month view of the passing year.
For each month of the year Sue Cook has designed a new, beautifully detailed picture in her own inimitable style. The pictures are simple and fun to stitch, giving them an immediate appeal even to less experienced stitchers.
Accompanying the main pictures for every month are four pages containing tens of smaller motifs and complementary seasonal themes. These are sure to encourage even beginners to get started, while enabling experienced stitchers to create something special in an evening.
Simple project ideas show how to use the range of motifs on made-up items, turning them into great gifts for friends and family, while detailed instructions are given on creating a wall hanging or framing the picture of the month.

Great Idea Book for Holidays.......2004-07-14
Many of the cross-stitch projects I do are small projects. I especially enjoy monthly themes and this book has lots of wonderful small patterns for each month. I am always looking for pattern books with different ideas for monthly themes. I have been very pleased with the selection in this book. The only thing I wish it had were photos of all the finished patterns.

Book Description
Examining the folk influences on the decoration of Chinese houses and their traditional methods of construction, this intriguing book also studies such ancient customs of fengshui, the system of divination that relied on the spirits of the landscape to reveal the suitability of a site for building. Illustrated with wood block prints, original line drawings, and the author's own photographs, this first ever book on the cultural aspect of the Chinese house portrays a living folk tradition of amazing resilience.

Next to cesarean sections, hysterectomies are the most common surgical procedure in the United States today, with about 590,000 of them performed annually. A hysterectomy is frightening to contemplate not only because it's considered a major surgical procedure, but also because of the life changes that may follow: "instant" menopause, weight gain, the need for hormone replacement therapy, depression over the loss of femaleness, and the realization of one's mortality. Other adjustments that are overlooked in many books on the topic but covered in depth here are the difficulties with sex and relationships. Just As Much a Woman tackles all these topics frankly, with a refreshing sense of humor, from the perspective of a woman who had a less than ideal experience when she had her hysterectomy and who would like to prevent others from that agony.
Authors Dianna Bolen and Nancy Rosenfeld stress that the first things to consider when faced with the recommendation of hysterectomy are to get a second opinion and to educate yourself on all the treatment options. Rosenfeld balked at the immediate surgery her doctor recommended ("I can't... we have friends in town from out of the country") but was shocked to learn from the second opinion that her uterine fibroid was more likely to be malignant than not.
She offers 16 questions to ask your doctor before surgery (including the potentially embarrassing "What will fill up the space once the tumor and female organs have been removed?") and her doctor's responses to them. She also offers sage advice on how to prepare both your body and mind for the surgery; how to choose among the different types of anesthesia; five reasons to lobby for a private room if you can afford it; and how to speed recuperation both in the hospital and at home. Profiles of 12 other hysterectomy patients (ages 27 to 65) reveal that there is widespread, unnecessary suffering by women both before and after hysterectomies--much of which could be avoided with the information contained in this book.
Book Description
Every year, hundreds of thousands of women just like you make the critical decision to undergo a hysterectomy. This procedure will take them through a wide range of emotions—from dread and dismay to freedom and joy. With humor and honesty, former hysterectomy patient
Nancy Rosenfeld and psychotherapist
Dianna Bolen candidly answer the questions every woman wants to ask, including:
• Will I go immediately into menopause?
• How will it affect my sex life?
• What are the risks of taking estrogen?
• Will I look and feel older?
• How long does it take to recover?
If you or someone you love is a candidate for hysterectomy—or have already had one—this positive, reassuring guide will provide a deeper understanding of the experience. You'll learn, as the authors have, that hysterectomy is not an end, but rather a passage to a new beginning.
"This book answered the questions I was afraid to ask. They dissipated the fear, both short-term and long-term, about everything from pain to social attitudes to sex life."—
Sandra Edwards, former hysterectomy patient
"An ideal reference book for the concerned patient."—
Joachim Frank, M.D.
"An informative, woman-friendly book about an emotionally laden subject. It is written with sensitivity and empowers women by outlining choices and consequences. Must-reading for women anticipating hysterectomy"
—Ada P. Kahn, Ph.D.
"A well-rounded guide to the entire hysterectomy process."—
Heather Krantz, M.D.
About the Authors

Dianna W. Bolen, Psy.D., a psychotherapist who works as a consultant to hospitals, has written numerous articles for newspapers and magazines on personal growth, spirituality, and sexuality. She lives in Chicago with her dog, Maxwell, and two cats.
Customer Reviews:
There are far better books to choose from.......2007-08-03
I agree with the 1999 2 star review - this is not well-written, and it is not clear what it strives to accomplish. It fails to be particularly informative, inspiring, accurate or comforting - instead I found it at times alarming, and mostly annoying. I also note that many of the more positive reviews of this book appear to be posted by friends/neighbors/associates of the author.
A far better guide to hysterectomy, which I highly recommend to anyone considering the procedure, is The Essential Guide to Hysterectomy - and if fibroids are a concern, you should also read What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibroids: New Techniques and Therapies--Including Breakthrough Alternatives to Hysterectomy
best of all the others i read.......2004-09-22
i read several other books before i had my hyst, but this one was so realistic and down to earth it seems to be personally written to me. it answered all the questions i was too afraid too embarrassed or thought was stupid to ask, and gave many helpful hints about what to do to make the process a bit smoother, if that's possible, as well as, calmed my fears on what to expect. the main thing is that its not sugar coated but straight in your face how it is.
Beware if you suffer from endometriosis!.......2000-01-06
The author relates her personal experience through her own hysterectomy in a realistic manner. Within the first two chapters, she states twice that endometriosis is never a good reason for a hysterectomy. Not having suffered serious pain from her tumor before her diagnosis, nor from the debilitating pain of this disease, she has dismissed surgery as the life-reclaiming (albiet, last resort) option that it can be for some women. Although her descriptions of the emotional roller-coaster that a woman can experience in connection with hysterectomy are accurate and written with good humor, it would have been more compassionate not to make definitive statements about endo that equate to the airing of a one-sided opinion. Every woman is different. Work with your doctor to design a treatment plan that addresses your situation. If your doctor will not listen to you, find another who will. The book was enjoyable, in an anecdotal fashion, but does not jibe with others I have read when it comes to the medical facts concerning HRT (hormone replacement therapy). Read this for support, you're not alone in what you are going through! But don't rely on the medical information.
The book I wish I'd Had . . . ........1999-07-06
If you have ever faced a life changing operation -- or one you feared could change your life -- you will appreciate the powerful and sensitive approach Nancy Rosenfeld and Dianna Bolen have taken in JUST AS MUCH A WOMAN, a guide for the woman facing or living through a hysterectomy. Armed with her own direct experience, the personal experiences of many other women, and thoughtful input from professionals in the health and psychology fields, Nancy Rosenfeld provides a sympathetic and well-organized presentation of the wide-ranging issues confronting any woman advised to have or consider having a hysterectomy. Each year over 650,000 women are advised to undergo this uniquely female surgery. While a portion of these women have life-threatening conditions requiring immediate surgery, many more are advised to elect surgery for a number of health reasons. The decision to proceed with an elective hysterectomy -- or to decline to proceed -- is indeed a comlex and multifaced decision. For example, the woman considering such a surgery may have a choice between a total and partial hysterectomy, a choice between an abdominal or vaginal removal, and a choice among varrious approaches to hormone management. If you face these decisions, your doctor may or may not explain all your options clearly. Nancy does. Further, she provides the language you will need in order to understand and discuss your options intelligently. She helps you anticipate the decisions you may confront and the thoughts and feelings you may experience. Personal narratives from a dozen women give the reader the sense of sharing a mutual experience with friends, friends who have faced the same concerns and fears. JUST AS MUCH A WOMAN is the book I wish I had had when I was faced with this profound female issue myself.
Well written, informative, the real truth about hysterectomy.......1999-06-12
This book quickly brought me up to speed on the medical/physiological processes involved written in a way that I could understand the information. The information and personal experiences of the author and the other 12 women made me feel more comfortable about my upcoming surgery. Not everything said was encouraging, but I felt comforted by the honesty. It is better to know what to expect than to be in the dark. I especially liked the hindsight information about how to prepare for the surgery and the recovery period, suggestions for freezing meals, losing weight and getting in shape before the surgery were particularly helpful. This book was the real thing, and written in a manner that made me feel like I was having a conversation with the author. The sharing of the emotional experience before , during and after the surgery helped me to feel normal. The author literally walks you through the day of surgery and each of the first five days following in great detail. Thank you Nancy Rosenfeld! I recommend this book as required reading for any woman contemplating or needing a hysterecomy and for their partners!!!.

Good Book, I haven't really puy it down since I got it........2000-12-25
The book was good in researching the rumours that Jim Morrison is still alive, and tells some which was unknown. I have been reading it all day, and the only problem I have is it's only 80 pages, which is a little too short. Worth a read.
Worth a read but..........1999-04-17
Don't expect too much, it's rather dissapointing.
Is he still alive and living in L'America? Well, we still don't know.
Respect to Bob for making the effort though.
Tedious reading.......1999-02-04
After reading this book I felt assured knowing that Morrison has been dead all this time, but disappointed in the lack of research. This author interviewed no one of importance, scarcely addressed any theories of murder or OD and was content telling the reader what happened on each day of search minute after boring minute. Great topic to write about, but The End fell short in many areas.
Provocative questions left unanswered in Seymore's book........1998-11-25
Those interested in the subject of Morrison's death owe a great deal of gratitude to Seymore, whose dogged perseverence resulted in the release of several major documents held by Paris police, including the report of Alain Ronay, the full police report of Pam Courson, et cetera. Nevertheless, Seymore fails to follow up on some fascinating issues, and largely believes the Courson /Ronay story without questioning the underlying validity of those testimonies or looking very deeply into the situation. Much of the book could be subtitled, "Bob's Irritations With Parisian Bureaucracy," and it often seems as if Seymore is desperately trying to pad what is already a short book. He fails to read his own material very closely for places where witness testimony is provocatively contradictory, primarily (I believe) because his main thrust in doing research into Morrison's death was to discover that he was still alive. Sorry, Mr. Seymore...
