Unique and Broad, though Slightly Incomplete Guidebook........2001-10-22

Story's first guidebook in the 'Bicycling America's National Parks' series (California) is an excellent all-around cycling guide (and general guidebook) for the Golden State. It's concise, thorough, and balanced, presented in personable, witty language. He includes a variety of road and mountain bike routes for virtually every riding level. His lodging, shopping, and especially dining suggestions are first rate. It includes almost all the information a would-be tourist (as I was) needs for a bicycling trip to CA. Story also throws in some nice tidbits about natural and cultural history of each park, as well as description of fauna and flora (plants and animals), and worthwhile less-known attractions.

This guide from Story features most of the same attributes as his previous guide. He includes a variety of rides that highlight the nearly infinite geographical and ecological diversity of Oregon and Washington. Once again, he includes abundant, but concise information and recommendations related to lodging and related travel info, presented in personable language (though he's not as consisently funny). As before, he provides a nice natural and historical background, serving to not just describe, but introduce the reader to each park (or recreational area).

There is one minor shortcoming, relative to Story's National Parks/California book. That guide contained abundant supplemental information related to dining and other special attractions within or near each park. While this guidebook has some info. of that nature, it seems much more sparse. This might be because many trails in Oregon and Washington are in fairly rural areas far from any major (or even minor) population center. This considered, this guidebook still doesn't seem as complete as his California edition, which provided that reader with virtually everything we'd need to plan our trip. This isn't to say this guide is poor, it just doesn't quite match up to the standards of Story's previous guide. Once again, it would be helpful if Story included a general map of each park (this was the only minor problem I had with his CA edition).

Even if it doesn't quite measure up to Story's California guide, Oregon/Washington is still far superior to most other cycling guidebooks available (even allowing for it's uniqueness). It's an indespensible tool for anyone planning a cycling trip to or near the national parks/recreational areas of Oregon and Washington. It's a perfect starting point, though you might want to research the areas more before heading out.

A superb addition to a great series.......2001-04-04

I purchased this book after reading a glowing review of it from the San Francisco Chronicle. I'm very glad I purchased it. This latest addition to the Bicycling America's National Parks series is informative, helpful, and truly captures the ambience of the different national parks it covers. It's not just national parks, but national recreation areas, and national monuments too, and you really get a sense of where the great bicycling opportunities are in places that also have national-caliber scenery and attractions. After reading the book, I'm definitely planning on using it for a Hells Canyon National Recreation Area trip later this summer. The chapters on Crater Lake, Olympic National Park, and Mount Saint Helens totally appealed to me, cause I've been to those places and wondered about biking there. The author does a great job of showing that the myth that you can't ride offroad in national parks is just that-- a myth. (All the rides are legal, though some do take place just outside park boundaries.) The book presents everything you need to know in a clear, often funny way. The pictures are great too. That's about all I ask from a guidebook.

The Best Aurora Slot Car Book.......2007-09-25

The definitive book for Aurora slot car collector's. I know we're still out there. I wish this book was available when I was first collecting Aurora slot cars. If you're looking for a great way to see what was available then or what you still need to add to your collection this is the way to do it.

Solid work on Aurora.......2006-07-11

Bob does an excellent job with the history of Aurora, the vibrators, t-jets, tuff ones, etc., however, he readily admits that his first love is the pre-AFX (1971) aurora cars, and this shows itself in the book. The AFX section of the book has numerous errors in the descriptions of car variations. For instance, it is often very hard to correlate the description with the cars pictured. Furthermore, there are variations that are simply missing from the guide like the Translucent Lime Dodge Street Van. Another problem, is the handling of "Chrome stripped" cars. The guide dis-includes these modified cars for some models, but he shows Chrome-stripped Nomads as though they were originally released that way. This guide contains absolutely no valuation, other than a numbering system showing rarity. But I have found that the rarity estimates have been off as well. For instance, he catogorized the Dodge Charger Petty Promo car and the Dodge Rebel Charger as "1 Rare" when in fact these appear with great frequence on e-bay, a fact that has arbitrarily inflated the selling prices in my opinion. Other cars should be "1 Rare" but are rated #2 like the Matador Fastback stocker with the Ford sticker on it, which I have never once seen sell on e-bay.

These criticisms should not prohibit placing this book on your shelf, even if your love is for AFX and not the T-Jets. I strongly recommend that you get the book if your interest is Aurora. Just keep in mind that the AFX section could be improved upon.

Aurora Slot Cars.......2004-10-08

Do not buy this book to "valuate" your cars. This book is all about the history of Aurora. If you are interested in the company, the men, the circumstances, then buy this book. As far as I know it's the only book of its kind and there in lies the value. A great product (T-jets), a unique company (Aurora), an interesting history and well told. I love this book and it's worth every penny.

No real insight into Aurora from this greenburg book.......2001-08-25

This book has nice pictures, just not enough of them. It gives no insight into Aurora or the rationalization of the pricing valuation structure. After attending Slot Car Swap Meets for the past several years, the book is not even close to the valuation criteria used by diehard collectors. If you use this book to valuate your cars, you will invariable over value common cars, and under value the true rare ones. By the way unless the car is extremly rare, it must be in new condition (not just mint for the age), to have any true collector value at all. Mint for age cars are worthless.

A work of art for the slot car enthusiast and collector!.......1998-06-24

The work of Mr. Graham is one of the most complete works that I have read to date.

Graham begins the work with an excellent review of the beginnings of slot cars. The progression into the history of Aurora Plastics Company is a smooth and flawless transition. Graham holds no punches in this book when reviewing mistakes that Aurora made during its years. There are numerous pictures depicting almost any "Vibrator", "ThunderJet", "AFX", and large scale cars (1/32, 1/24) that Aurora produced while owned and operated primarily in the U.S.

This book also has a fair price guide in the back of the book. I think some information is outdated as far as value is concerned, but it is still a good baseline.

Overall, this book is a handy tool to identify your Aurora vehicles and to use as a collectors guide. It is well worth the money to purchase and would even make a good gift for that "slot-head" in your family.

The original slot car guide is still the defining book........2001-06-23

While the book has not been substantially updated, it covers cars that were primarily made over twenty years ago. This guide, as far as I know, was the very first of it's kind. To date, the book is still current as the subject HO scale Aurora cars were last produced over two decades ago. Many other people have compiled "me too" listings of the slot cars covered in this book, but none of the other books have the level of professional photography or copy as is found in this book. In fact, some of the other publications are nothing more than computer printed color copies retailing for the same price or more. The author of this book attends numerous trade shows and swap meets, he is truly a wealth of knowledge for the so called experts and begginers to the collecting scene alike. Forget Mr. Aurora, Slot Car Johnny (The Author) has a well composed, concise pictorial guide that is unbiased and informative. It is the definitive guide for the HO scale Aurora slot car collector / enthusiast. You will enjoy this book for many years to come.

I thought the book did not give a good guide to pricing or to condision. The book seemed to basic with not enough information to really be useful.Does not cover enough of the cars made and colors.This is just a quick look at some cars someone owns in my view. It is OK if you can not get anything else or can not afford a better book. The book is worth looking through for the fun of it. OK not great

This book has a lot of great patterns and will be a great addition to my library of craft books. It has good pictures of the finished project. I really like the Vogue Knitting books.

Some criticisms unfounded.......2004-04-30

The pattern for the chunky tote is correct. It's a little confusing upon first read, but it does work. You cast on 36 stitches. After awhile, you bind off 11 and then knit 14 more. Then you knit some more length, leaving 11 stitches alone on the other side, which means you do end up with a T shape as the diagram shows, which folds up into the squarish tote.

My complaint with the book is that there are not enough basic patterns using yarn you don't have to mortgage your house for, but that's true with almost all Vogue publications!

This small book has projects for all tastes. 27 bags and backpacks to knit and have fun. Has a picture for every item.
I know it can be difficult to get the right yarns and accesories if you live abroad or if you don't want to spend lots of money, but with little imagination, you can adjust this ideas and use other yarn and another kind of handles for a bag. Just check gauge and you're done!! great buy for teens or young adults who want to start knitting their own bags or for a mother or grandma who wants to spoil her children

Looks can be deceiving.......2002-03-12

I love handbags and I love to knit. To me, this book looked like the perfect combination of both. Then, I started kitting the chunky tote on page 29. A half-dozen (wasted) hours later, I realized that there was no way, geometrically, that the bag shown in the photograph could be created by following the pattern.

In addition, the resources list at the back of the book is all but useless. It contains merely a list of suppliers by name, but it does not categorize them as to what they supply, nor does it provide email or website information. The resource listings contain only postal addresses. In rare cases phone numbers are provided, if only for suppliers based in the UK. It's the 21st Century, for pete's sake! Who has time to send a letter through the mail to Judi & Co. in NY, requesting a catalog from which to order the black handles required for the chunky tote on pg. 29? Very few would bother, I'm afraid. And who could blame them?

As a new knitter, I rely heavily on patterns in books and, perhaps naively, take for granted that they are correct. I realize that mistakes happen and that errors in proofing can occur. However, putting a good, usable book together involves more than selecting a great binding or including flashy photos on a glossy stock. It's helpful if someone actually TESTS the instructions AFTER they are written. It's called usability testing. It happens in software, why not knitwear?

Vogue on the go bags.......2001-09-11

Since I am a purse nut, I love this book. Normally I do not knit but because of the beautiful patterns I am learning so that I can make some of the bags. I look forward to more patterns from Vogue.

Venetian Palazzi.......2004-09-23

An excellent volume with color photographs, an engraving, and a brief history and description of each of around a couple dozen palazzi. I only wish there were even more photographs and longer and even more detailed desciptions and histories of each palazzo and that many more palazzi were covered. No doubt I am being greedy, as such a work covering all the palazzi would require a gargantuan size or many volumes and only large libraries and millionaires could afford it. I heartily recommend this volume who loves the beautiful and grandly elegant interiors of homes of the Venetian Nobility and the art (Titian to Tiepolo) which graced them, or to anyone planning a trip to the city of the former Serene Republic.

Great Pictures.......2001-01-15

This book has excellent photography, and the narratives are just as good. I would highly reccomend this book to anyone interested in Italian architecture, design, or furnishings. Although the size of this book is rather large, the pictures are very detailed, and show off the intricacies of every design.

This is an awesome book for adults and children with ADHD. It explains so much and a way that is easily understood. I highly recommend this book for anyone with a child diagnosed ADHD.

This is a good book which speaks to a child in helping them understand that they are not the only ones with these issues. A lot of times, books speak "louder" than parents. :)

This book is actually funny. It hits on the aspects of ADHD perfectly, right down to the angelic little sister who can do no wrong. There are some words in the book I wish were not there, like stupid and crazy. I bought it to read to my 5 year old who is ADHD, but with no learning disablities...yet. So I figure we will skip the part on learning disablilities, and being given less homework from the rest of the class. Use it for a tool to help explain what we are doing as a family to address the ADHD, and help him control his behavior. Read it first, cut out what you don't think applies or needs to be heard by your child. The book is mostly informative, and really funny.

A great, down-to-earth kid's view of ADHD!.......2000-08-04

I bought this book for my 6-year-old nephew and will read it to him when he comes to live with us soon. I can't wait, because it is so simply written and straightforward, I'm sure it will help him understand what we have not been able to tell him about his ADHD condition. It is entertaining, and because it is told in a kid's point of view, it shows ADHD with concerns that kids would have that adults might not have even thought of. I recommend it if you're trying to find just the right way of reaching your child or student!

Popular young singer LeAnn Rimes and her husband, dancer/choreographer Dean Sheremet follow their initial collaborative effort, Jag, with a story of friendship.

As Jag's New Friend opens we find the perky jaguar and her best friend, Simon, lazing in a field enjoying a beautiful day. But, Simon's been pretty busy lately as captain of the climbing team, and he no longer has a great deal of time to spend with Jag. When Jag complains to her mother, mom suggests she visit her friend, Isabel. However, Isabel the parrot isn't at home. Instead, Jag found a snake, Bo, who offered to play. Now, Jag has been warned that snakes aren't "cool". But, Bo looks good to him - he'll show those friends who ignore him.

The little jaguar is soon disheartened when he sees that what Bo really wants is Isabel's eggs. (Wouldn't you know, snakes are always the bad guys!). So, Jag has a lot of explaining to do about why he took up with this slithery creature in the first place.

The lesson is clear: even your best friends can't always pay attention to you, and be careful who you trust.

Sales for this title will probably be buoyed by illustrator Richard Bernal's colorful illustrations and the Rimes name.

A Good Book for Teaching Values.......2004-10-07

I was afforded the opportunity of thumbing through this book at a friend's house. Aside from being a good book, it is just refreshing to see children books being written by someone who can really play the role model children need to see in celebrities. Too many stars "dabble" in this genre but lack the public character to add credibility to their work. Leann Rimes is star in every sense of the word, but more importantly, she is a warm and real person who projects the values she rights about.

As a fellow author of pet loss books, I know how difficult it is to bring a writing project to print. It takes a lot of effort and personal commitment. Even though I cheated and read someone else's copy, I recommend this book very highly.

I am a huge LeAnn Rimes fan - so this book was a must have for me.. And much to my surprise it was actually an extremely great buy!!..

The book has a wonderful story with incorporated morals!!.. Everyone is different - some more than others - however, we all have little talents of our own - we just have to find out what they are! - A great book for the developing of minds.. And morals..

I work in a Childcare centre and the kids love this book!!.. And so do I!! Bravo LeAnn & Dean.. :D

I am a fan of Leann Rimes' music and so when I heard about this book I was so excited and just had to have it. I was not disappointed. The story and the illustrations are beautiful. I love the book. The book has such a wonderful message to go with the wonderful story and illustrations. I am now anxiously awaiting the next Jag book.

I am in charge of the children's department for a bookstore and absolutely love this book! The illustrations in this book are outstanding and the story is awesome. There is something to learn from this story line. I did this for story time and all of the kids fell in love with Jag and overall loved this book! LeAnn Rimes has done an amazing job with this book and chose just the right illusrator for the job! I am hoping for more childrens books from LeAnn!

Okay. I knew she could sing but, writing a book?? It's great I think!! This book was shortly after being released, turned into a movie on the life of a girl who always dreamed of singing at the Grand Ole Opry. Her dreams come true when one of the acts cancells and can't sing. The next in like is LeAnn. I've seen the movie but I haven't read the book yet. If the book is just like the movie, I'm sure it's a great book!! I loved the movie and while watching the movie, I wrote down the songs that were sung and mentioned in the movie, and made a soundtrack which can be purchased by email me at Godschild4ever2001@yahoo.com! It's the best album you can get if you like the movie, LeAnn, and her music!!

Have you ever read a book that actually made you cry? I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in country music or likes to hear about other people's life stories. I really liked HOLIDAY IN YOUR HEART mainly because the authors described every event in very good detail, and made me more and more interested in reading the book.

This book is far from the heartwarming review it got from its co-writer, LeAnn. It revolves around bad times and death. Not to mention that the story idea is completely unoriginal. It stems from LeAnn's own life (even the title character, Anna Lee, shows Miss Rimes's lack of imagination) - from the death of her Godfather to singing at the Grand Old Opry. It can hardly be called fiction. It is a very depressing, morbid, unoriginal book, and like the movie, I do not recommend it at all.

This book is about the life of LeAnn Rimes, who is a country singer. She went to the top of the Grammy Awards in just 10 years! Leann began to sing when she was 5 years old. LeAnn seemed older than she was. She wanted to be a famous country singer. LeAnn got to be a famous singer because of her families' help. Her hobbies that she enjoys are going to concerts, softball, shopping, and horseback riding. She had trouble with singing better than other singers. Even though she did not win the Country Music Association Award for single of the year, on her song "Blue", nor did she win the Horizon Award, people still noticed LeAnn's performance. Soon afterward, she was recognized for her talent. LeAnn Rimes kept on singing and did not give up. She enjoyed it, so she kept on performing. LeAnn feels proud when she gets an award. I would recommend this book to other people. This would be a great book if you like Biographies. Plus, I think you would like her songs if you like country music.

She could sing when she was 18 monthes old, where she went on to talent shows, opry stages, and sports stadiums. LeAnn Rimes has always liked to sing and likes to be with her family. As a great fan of LeAnn Rimes, I have to say I found this biography more than a little disappointing. I discovered absolutely no information on her that couldn't be found in the most superficial interviews she has given. Since reading it I have also learned, from a interview with LeAnn herself, that not only was she not consulted in the writing of this book, the author did not even bother to interview her! It was based primarily on past interviews conducted by other writers. I you have absolutely no knowlege of LeAnn you might enjoy this book, otherwise I recommend passing it over.

A paraphrase of this memoir would give the sense that 'Henry Green' was a typical British writer of the 1930s: a superposh old Etonian who precociously published his first novel at Oxford, and was driven by class guilt to work as a foundryman. Or, in his words, 'as was said in those days I had a complex and in the end it drove me to go to work in a factory with my wet podgy hands'. The prose style is what makes this book an absolute one-off - chatty, cleverly idiomatic, bathetic, loveable and self-effacing. 'Pack my Bag' isn't a book you'd read for the plot (unless you're interested in the faux-hardships of wealthy, hypersensitive schoolboys?), but its account of the Great War is full of compelling anecdotes (like the shellshocked soldier who stayed at the country estate of Green's parents - 'no longer human when he came to us'). If you like these subtle-ish modernist writers like Katherine Mansfield and Elizabeth Bowen you might fall for Green, as sophisticated a stylist as any of the big modernist names (Woolf, Lawrence etc), but with an intimacy and sweetness that you don't necessarily associate with experimental writing. And he's funny, too. No wonder the people who love Henry Green really, really love Henry Green.
