The title of this report is inspired by the great Danish author Hans Christian Andersen who in the children’s tale "Den Grimme Ælling" ("The Ugly Duckling") tells the story of a particularly ugly duckling. She is so ugly, in fact, that she is despised and disliked by all the other ducks and ducklings. After a long and painful period of time, however, she grows up -- but not to become an ugly duck. Instead she becomes a beautiful white swan, admired by all. So Andersen’s tale has a happy ending -- at least as far as the ugly duckling goes. The major question tackled in this report is whether a similar fate is awaiting Tanzania. Having been something of an enfant terrible since the deep crisis in the early 1980s, economic progress since 1995 provides some hope that the duckling period in Tanzania is finally over.

Statistics with Applications in Biology and Geology provides a practical introduction to using fundamental parametric statistical models frequently applied to data analysis in biology and geology. Based on material developed for an introductory statistics course and classroom tested for nearly 10 years, this treatment establishes a firm basis in models, the likelihood method, and numeracy. The models addressed include one sample, two samples, one- and two-way analysis of variance, and linear regression for normal data and similar models for binomial, multinomial, and Poisson data. Building on the familiarity developed with those models, the generalized linear models are introduced, making it possible for readers to handle fairly complicated models for both continuous and discrete data. Models for directional data are treated as well. The emphasis is on parametric models, but the book also includes a chapter on the most important nonparametric tests. This presentation incorporates the use of the SAS statistical software package, which authors use to illustrate all of the statistical tools described. However, to reinforce understanding of the basic concepts, calculations for the simplest models are also worked through by hand. SAS programs and the data used in the examples and exercises are available on the Internet.

Could Have Been A Good Book.......2007-08-05

However.............this book lets itself down in many way. Being an encyclopedia you'd think it would be perfectly proofed. Not so!!! There are so many grammatical errors, it's not funny. I thought at the beginning it was just a typing error, but once I had gone past 50 pages there were (1) mispelt words, (2) gaps in sentences, (3) bad formatting, (4) images that did not correspond with the text beside it, (5) sentences with words missing.

In no way would I recommend anyone buy this book until it has been reprinted with a proper proofing.

Are you a Floridian or thinking about moving to Florida, particularly in the southern portion of the state? Then you must read "The Calusa and Their Legacy: South Florida People And Their Environments..." -- the definitive book on the Calusa. Darcie A. Macmahon and Dr. William H. Marquardt, an expert on the Calusa, have written a fascinating book that brings to life a group of people who disappeared from Florida in the 1700s. For hundreds of years, the Calusa built a society that had its own government, a religion, and adaptation to the environment that is quite impressive. On the one hand, the Calusa were warriors, practiced human sacrifices, and held spiritual beliefs which included communing with the dead. On the other hand, they governed a growing population, accomplished engineering feats of dredging canals through entire islands, were expert fisherman, and utilized shells and bones that would become tools, weapons and ornaments. They lived entirely off the land and waters, eating small game and fish of many varieties. They had no agriculture; none was needed, as they learned to live off what nature provided. These self-sufficient people did well until the Spanish arrived in the 1500s. History books report that when Juan Ponce de Leon visited Southwest Florida in the early part of the 1500s, on his second expedition Calusa arrows wounded him. He fled to Cuba, where he later died from those wounds. As the Spanish began to visit Florida with more frequency, the Calusa were beginning to be eased from their homeland. By the mid-1700s, they were no more. Read this fascinating book to learn where the Calusa may have gone to, and why there are no Calusa in the state today.

Long Awaited Book Now Available!! Hooray!!!.......2004-11-07

This is an excellent book. It's about a vanished people, the Calusa Indians of Southwest Florida. And it is written by two people who best know the Calusa story. From the Florida Natural History Museum, Darcie MacMahon (exhibits director) and William Marquardt (curator and archaeologist) have produced a book for general readership that is truly readable. Its few technical terms are well explained. Scientific names are there if you want them, but above all, THE CALUSA AND THEIR LEGACY tells, in clear language, the fascinating story of a fierce and powerful people who disappeard 200 years ago.

The book paints a broad picture. It starts with the bountiful estuary environment where these people lived, tells of the food they harvested, their religious beliefs, their weapons and their battles with the Spanish. Then, when the Calusa were no more, this remarkable book goes on to answer the question: "What happened next?"

Finally, the book gives us a look at what is happening to this land of plenty - a land that supported people for 6,000 years - today.

Excellent photos and illustrations bring the story to life. In addition to adult readers, the book is quite suitable for students grades nine and up.

Science isn't always a Super Hero.......2000-10-02

For some, science is a super hero. It helps to save lives with developments like incubators, surgeries, and medicines. Science brings tools like computers, cordless phones, and DVDs into existence. Others, however, view science as a monster that brings with it pollution, greed, and destruction. Science, as explained in this book, is a very human activity with the full range of problems and possibilities of which man himself is capable. Explained within this book, is the findings of science and exactly how science goes about making progress. This is a very interesting and insightful read. I highly recommend it to pracitioners of science and to students who are studying any type of science. I also recommend it to the layman who wishes to know more about how science really works.

You can learn more from IRS publications.......2000-04-26

I bet Hutchison hates the IRS as much as anyone, though for different reasons: published in 1996, this book is already quite out of date in terms of both specific and general IRA strategies (other than the basic idea that you should start one if you can). The book also doesn't give much in the way of real investment strategies. Indeed, I learned more from IRS publications and non-IRA-related publications regarding tax questions and investing strategy, respectively. And I still don't know about how capital gains tax is calculated for short-term buying and selling in an IRA account....It's not in this book. The book is not written with flair (she refers to her style as "no-nonsense"), so it's a bit of a yawner. And perhaps most importantly for many readers, this book was last published the year BEFORE the Roth IRA was created. The book doesn't even mention it, needless to say. If you want to know whether to convert to or start with a Roth, you'll need to look elsewhere (Tobias' "The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need" covers the basics in this regard).

This book is a very simple read. I felt like the buying process was spelled out in a very direct fashion and advice was given in such a way that even a first time home buyer could feel confident. I recommend the book to anyone who is considering the purchase of a home in the future.
