Ran insecure?.......2005-02-21

I love the story between these two lovers. I agree with the other reviewers that this couple has all the same problems that other couples have. They ask themselves am I good enough? Can I make him happy?

But I did find Ran a little insecure in this one. After eveything that he and Kei have been through to think that Kei would just dump him for a woman. I think that the second time Ran thinks Kei is cheating on him, Kei should have said, "Fine, leave if you think I think so little of you as to throw all the time we have been together out the window along with all the memories and love."

Kizuna 3 -- The Best So Far!.......2005-01-20

Well, someone beat me to this review and wrote a very good summary so I'll keep it short.
This volume is the best one in my opinion in terms of story, character interaction and the art (greatly improved).
It's got a lot of humor even though it is dealing with serious issues and the stories are once again well developed and interesting.
I'm just hoping the rest of the volumes come out faster (not in June...I can't wait that long)!!!
Bottom line: worth EVERY penny you spend :)

Definitely my Favorite Yaoi Series !.......2005-01-14

I love Book 1 and 2. Book 3 is just as enticing. The translation is solid. Ran and Kei are simply endearing and my favorite Yaoi couple. I am not too fond of Kai but Masa is intriguing. Too bad Kodaka decides to pair up Kai and Masa. I would have prefer Masa to have someone more compatible. Oh well!. Book 3 has 3 stories. First 2 are on Ran and Kei, which are excellent. The first one is comical yet tender. The second one is my favorite. Ran and Kei are forced to question their relationship. Will it stand the test of time? Will they be able to remain true to each other? Kodaka does a great job despite the limitation of words in a manga. She even manage to inject some comical moments in a serious subject. Ran's doubts and Kei's response are beautifully depicted. And of course the erotic sex scenes though the rape scene is a trifle disturbing.
The last story on Kai and Masa is a trifle sober but manage to justify to the reader Masa's love for Kai. Do yourself a favor and get Kizuna. Meanwhile I am impatiently waiting for books 4 to 6 which the publisher has announced to be released in 2005.

I am the first classmate featured in the book (although I am also the ONLY classmate not featured on the cover of the book...). When I read my chapter, I was angry at first. I felt I was portrayed kind of like Shrek (layers, donkey!) the Ogre. Especially when the "redneck weapons designer" was followed by a chapter on "Miss saves-the-world-from-corporate-oppression". But as I read through and eventually re-read the book, I began to see it differently. My ire was replaced by an understanding that all of us changed from what we were in highschool - to an extent. My place ahead of the "coffee bean commando" was a juxtaposition of two passionate individuals who were working to fight the good fight in their own particular (if very different) way. I am who I have become. It can be strange reading about yourself written by someone else.

Honestly, though - I think I would have found the personal stories told in this book to be intriguing even if I were not one of them. What a long, strange trip it's been...

A waste of money........2004-12-04

I hoped this book would be a snapshot of what the adolescent experience was for me and my generation, but it wasn't. Instead, it was a narrative "yearbook" for Thomas Jefferson students only. I should have paid attention when all of the reviews on Amazon were by the people written about in the book, but I wasted my money anyway. It would have been nice to have a document that told the story of the dot com youth, the gen xers, the whatever you want to call us, but these descriptions felt more like an introduction to the new cast of MTV's the Real World, a representative of every social clique. Here's the gay one, here's the conservative, here's the wild one. Boring. Sensationalized. Please do not waste your money on this book.

What Really Happened is a poor attempt at conjuring up powerful memories of high school. The main reason for this is a format issue, I think. Had the author only written about a few people more in depth, I think the book would have been a much more interesting read. Instead, Chris Colin has broken his whole high school class down into different stereotypes and them summed up their lives in two sentences. Garbage.

Excellent Account of High School, and Life 10 Years later.......2004-10-18

When I read the inside flap of this book, I knew right away that I would love this book, and I did. I basically ready it cover to cover, non-stop, one recent weekend. How did the Class of 93 of Thomas Jefferson HS in northern Virgina turn out, 10 years later? The writer, himself a TJ 93 grad, focuses on 16 people (out of a class of 404), with himself interwoven throughout the book. The writer's basic premise is that 1993-2003 represents the "real" 90s decade (starting with Clinton's presidency, and ending with the start of the war in Iraq, with the internet Boom and Bubble, Monica Lewinsky and of course 9/11 along the way).

The best part of the book is (not surprisingly) to see how people change over a period of 10 years. In fact, it would appear that may, if not most, of the '93 TJ grads turn out very different after 10 years than their HS graduation would have lead most to believe or expect. One of the best stories involves Karen Taggert (yes, the reviewer right below me), who ends up teaching inner-city schools in DC. Another compelling story is John Doyle, the rigid military-reared (with accompanying strong views) kid who goes to West Point and undergoes a major change after doing his 5 yr duty in the military. I equally disagree with David Jacobs' review that the inclusion of the chapter on Sean Bryant (who took his life in college) was disrespectful or exploitative.

If there is one common thread throughout the stories of these now 27-28 yr olds looking back at high school, it's that many of them don't really seem all that happy! "We were prepared to be successful but not to be happy" is a statement that comes back more than once. Wow, that worries me (having 2 kids in HS now).

The last chapter, on the actual 10 year HS reunion, is somewhat of a letdown, after reading so many fascinating stories. But then again, isn't any HS reunion a letdown? It doesn't diminish the value of the book. Ultimately, the writer did an excellent job in making a bunch of strangers into compelling persons. Highly recommended! (And a sequel 10 years from now would be most welcome...)

Almost teaches you what you need to know........2006-02-15

I bought this book mostly to learn how to customize Contact forms. This book gives you about half the info you need. Then you hit a brick wall. I spent hours searching newsgroups and web sites to fill in the other half. There are a few simple things the author could have added so the book was actually valuable instead of incredibly frustrating. For example, the book shows you how to customize a form. Great. But then the book neglects to tell you how to apply that form to existing Contacts.

A Wonderful Book.......2000-06-14

The book is a collection of Rachel Carson's discovered writing, but it isn't a simple collection of her essays. Thanks to the excellent editor, Linda Lear, all of the 31 essays are well organized in four parts, and each one begins with an editor's preamble that explains background, Carson's motivation, and other useful information for the specific essay. With those preambles and essays, I had a feeling as if I were reading Rachel Carson's biography as well. With her unique combination, a biologist with literary talent, Rachel Carson turned her deep love for nature to the marvelous essays that would be very valuable for human being as a part of nature. The same editor, Linda Lear, wrote Carson's biography (Rachel Carson : Witness for Nature), which I read a couple of months ago and found excellent. It also became one of my highly recommending books.

If you've read all their interviews you probably have read the book in its entirety. Still, I think it's worth a read--it arranges the quotes in sections which keep the quotes related.
