THE IRON CHEF MANGA STYLE!.......2006-04-11

"Iron Chef" on the food network has become a cult classic TV show. This odd, cooking competition show, imported from Japan and set within a small stadium setting complete with an audience and expert judges, has spawned an American version called "Iron Chef America". Shinji Saijyo's Iron Wok Jan is kind of a Manga version of the TV show, at least this current issue as 32 great chefs are competing in a Chinese cooking competition. The first competition is a battle with Tofu dishes and as volume 17 opens Jan Akiyama, the arrogant yet renowned chef has stunned the audience by scoring a low 15 out of 100 points with his dish. But the judges rule that it wasn't truly a tofu dish, much to the delight of food critic Nichido Otani who hates Jan and wants him out of the cooking industry.

Other contestants come after Jan and get high scores with their dishes, including his fellow chefs from the Gobancho Restaurant, Kiriko Gobancho and Celine Yang, as well as a mysterious chef from California. Nichido embarrasses Jan, and even has him down on his knees as Jan stubbornly refuses to accept his score until the judges try his Somen noodles. Nichido tells him it will never happen but as the contest goes on, Jan's noodles begin simmering and ripening, giving off a powerful aroma that almost seduces everyone who smells it. Soon the judges are practically stampeding to try Jan's noodles as Jan explains his incredible technique and Nichido steams in anger. But can Jan reverse his score high enough to make it to the next round? And what other surprises are in store for the competitors?

Iron Wok Jan really is quite like watching the Iron Chef TV show. The chefs use very exotic ingredients that are foreign to most Americans as well as using some rather inventive cooking techniques. Saijyo certainly seems to know his way around a kitchen. The book even comes with a few recipes such as marinated cucumber & octopus, and various types of potstickers. It's a fun book...different than other types of Manga in its unique and specialized subject matter. I enjoyed it.

Should Be: "Creative Decoupaging With Old Greeting Cards".......2001-07-04

I was somewhat disappointed with this book. I bought it thinking there would be good ideas to use the cards I receive, particlarly holiday cards. Well, first of all, most are based on decoupage, not a wide variety of techniques. Secondly, most of the projects shown use really nice "artsy" types of cards and would not have the same effect using the majority of greeting cards being circulated these days.

I also wish the layout and instructions were better presented. Projects are divided into months (though they could be used any time of the year)...it would have been better if grouped by similar projects. Each month has a photo of several sample projects, then you have to look for the instructions a page or two away...all of which start out by saying "Refer to General Inst. on pages 6-18"

Nice if you're interested in decoupage ideas.

Crafting with Recycled Greeting Cards.......2000-04-20

I have this book at home and it has many good ideas for re-using greeting cards. Decoupage, cards, bookmarks, and boxes are some of the finished products. It shows 3-d decoupage also. I recommend this book highly. The instructions are clear and the pictures are very pretty.

Beginners guide to WIN32 threading, bit dated now........2007-07-26

A beginners guide to multi-threading on WIN32. Experienced developers might find it useful to quickly skim through this book to see if there is anything that they didn't already know, but for the most part anyone with significant experience should find a different book.

The language used in the book is very easy to read, making life easy for newcomers to threading, but possibly woolly enough to be slightly dangerous too, in that some stuff could bits could be misinterpreted. Developing example code using incorrect practices and then slowly fixing the problems is informative, but possibly not the best way of doing things. Why not just go for the right way first and then point out the errors that could have been made? That way it is safe for people to dip into the book and use code as is, rather than having to trawl through for a correct version. Talking about using code from books - do the authors expect the reader to trust their code when they include comments like "This happens occasionally instead of end-of-file. Not sure why" ? Certainly, that means that I would code-review anything I lifted from this book very carefully. More likely, it means that I won't lift anything from this book and will use Jeffrey Richter or Richard Gerber/Andrew Binstock instead.

The book does cover a large range of Windows-related multi-threading topics - from file handling, GUI handling etc through implications for DLLs. It touches on Sockets but only very briefly, which was disappointing. Also particularly disappointing were the chapters on debugging and inter-process communications. There are too many books around that say that testing/debugging multi-threaded code is difficult without coming up with good strategies for overcoming the difficulties. Unit testing, logging and the debugger are useful, but obvious. "you must start making predictions (otherwise known as guesses)" (p268) is certainly an approach, but perhaps the time has come to use an engineering approach?

The material could do with updating, as Windows, C++ and development techniques have all moved on since this book was published. Experienced developers should look forward to Jeffrey Richter's new book, planned for end of 2007, which should be as up to date as it comes.

Despite referring to the CD-ROM the book didn't actually come with one. Instead the source had to be downloaded from the Addison Wesley web-site. Strangely, Addison Wesley do not have an errata for this book on their web-site. Normally I'm a big Addison Wesley fan, but they have done a few silly things with this book. The very first page of the preface had me concerned, when they hyphenated _beginthread to be _begin-thread. Given that this book is aimed at beginners I would be pretty sure that someone, somewhere tried typing that into their computer complete with the hyphen.

Good but not perfect.......2006-12-14

It does a very good job at describing the Win32 API for multithreading but the applications of multithreading assumed is strictly I/O related (Networking,printing,writing/reading files). The set of techniques for parallel processing on the same data is completely absent such as data organization in memory to optimize its parallel access. This is probably due to the age of the book as when it has been written, single core processor system was the norm. Parallel processing will become very important with the growing popularity of the multi core systems. Despite this weakness, this book is still my best recommendation for learning multithreaded programming on Windows since, to my knowledge, there is not yet any book tackling the subject of parallel processing on a Windows/x86 platform.

Only Windows 95 and NT ???.......2006-07-23

Quite useful book. But I wont recommend it. Other than file I/O and threading, it is not for advanced programmers.

From the beginning to end, it only imparts about Win95 and WinNT. None of the OS after Windows 98 are covered. So, much of information covered is obsolete.

I was looking to a complete multithreading book for Windows XP, COM threading models, writing perfect multithreaded GUI application.

This material is still relevent, even when using .NET. The discussion of Win32 multithreading transcends any particular development environment used with a Windows 32 bit environment.

The key idea behind this book is getting correct, reproducible results with windows multithreaded applications. Multithreaded applications are very hard to get right and even harder to properly test. The author explains the many sources of problems and how to avoid them.

In order to understand this book's code samples, you will have to understand the Win32 API and code written in Visual C++ for Windows NT. It is important to see examples of these concepts in code.

Not the best.......2005-09-07

I bought this book to get advanced concepts of win32 multithreading which I cant get by browsing through msdn. Although this book has covered all topics, I was expecting more like a "Concurrent Programming In Java, by Doug Lee" kind of book which has a lot of gotchas. I would recommend this book for beginners looking for examples of how to use the APIs. Advanced developers should look somewhere else.

This is an excellent book for the average reader as well as anyone researching the exploding field of the brain and how it works. The book is beautifully designed with stills, mind maps, animated photos, diagrams and such, all accompanied by short verbal summaries, easily understood by the average reader yet packed, for the researcher, with new and important findings in every area immaginable from the developing brain to mind and memory to diseases of the brain. This is the type of book that should grace a coffee table as well as a library. It is intriguing and interesting. The type is set to allow for in-depth reading or perusal of pictures and captions. One can walk through casually as a slow evening stroll or dive headfirst into it with hunger for knowledge about so important a vessel to the meaning of life. I highly recommend the book to all.

Review of a GREAT Retirement Organizer.......2001-09-05

Reader: If you are looking for a great book to start you on the path to a strong retirement, this old used book is a good beginning. The chapters are organized over the major topics: social security, medical insurance needs, retirement plans, investing for income, living on assets,making real estate decisions,early retirement, and the possible pitfalls (Retirement Jeopardy. Each chapter is divided into three major sections after a short introduction: overview of chap. subject, an insightful real-life question and answer, and finally, What I tell my clients about the subject. I have read and re read this book over the last 8 years and place it at the top of books to help plan for a wonderful retirement in the near or far future. The original cost of this paperback was $.... Rosenberg or another certified financial planner needs to pick up this great text, revise it and get it printed again. I only rated it one less star from the top because some of the information is dated because of our government (social security changes, taxes, etc.)
