Ninety-nine pages, half a joke.......2006-11-18

The one good thing about this book is that it's a quick read. Imagine the same "this girl is promiscuous" joke repeated ad nauseum in different formats - usually one-line groaners you would imagine hearing from a very bad stand-up comic. After the first page or so, it gets kind of annoying, never mind the other 98 of them.

Don't bother getting this unless you enjoy the same cheap humor repeated until you want to punch the author.

The Life and Times of Heidi Abramowitz is a humorous fictional biography of the author Joan River's loose woman alter-ego. With large print, lots of white space, and many drawings by James Sherman, this is really a quick read.

Imagine all the jokes and put downs you have ever heard about loose women. Then imagine that there are three times as many that you haven't heard because they were too bizarre or off-color. Joan Rivers has put all these and more that you could never dream up in this short biographical sketch of her quintessential loose woman Heidi Abromowitz.

Divided into twelve chapters with titles that range from Baby Bimbo to Hooker Housewife, Joan Rivers will introduce you to a wonderful collection of jokes about tramps, tarts, and teasers.

Written at the height of the sexual revolution just before the recognition of the AIDS epidemic, some of the references to penicillin-treatable STDs may seem a bit insensitive by today's standards. While there is much in this book that will be humorous to the liberated reader, there is still plenty to upset the proper reader and the politically-correct.

Oh, that Heidi!.......2002-07-23

"The Life and Hard Times of Heidi Abromowitz," by Joan Rivers, is the alleged biography of the sexually adventurous woman of the title. The book features illustrations by James Sherman. As comedienne Rivers writes, Heidi was a tramp from day one: "She did things with her pacifier that most women still haven't done with their husbands." The book has a copyright date of 1984, and the Dell paperback is dated 1985. It's good-natured, dirty fun.

The book charts Heidi's sexually promiscuous life from babyhood through elementary school, high school, and adulthood. Rivers covers such milestones as a sex-filled trip to Europe. Interspersed throughout the book are supplements like a page from Heidi's fouth-grade diary, a list of her favorite films (including "Easy Rider" and "Anything Goes"), etc.

Quite a bit of the humor stems from Heidi's tendence to spread sexually transmitted diseases. This is very much a pre-AIDS sex comedy, and the STD related humor may leave a bad taste in the mouth of some readers. Still, the book is entertaining, and Heidi comes off as a likeable free spirit who lives life on her own terms; she may have something in common with HBO's "Sex and the City" women. Besides, how could you not love a woman whose "body has been declared a national recreation area"? If you're in the mood, give "Heidi" a try.

The book is a blend of mediocre information. You would expect from a book published in 2006 that it would be all about Windows Mobile 5, it is not! Besides it mixes up the old and the new in the same paragraph! It is utterly confusing. You would expect at the very least a delineation between the two. I was expecting a lot more

Not great for WM 5.0.......2007-01-05

I bought this book before I got my iPAQ in the hopes that it would give me a head start on using it, but there isn't enough detail on any instructions to actually be able to use the manual. For example, it says includes Windows Mobile 5 model info, but when I wanted to find out how to adjust the Program vs Storage memory slider, it only refers to previous Windows versions. Also, there is a lot of information on how to use your iPAQ phone, which of course I do not have the phone version. Basically a useless book.

Excellent! As a new user of an older model IPAQ with NO documentation, this book got me up and running very quickly.

Lacking in Details.......2004-10-15

This book does a good job of telling you what your IPAQ can do but a very poor job of telling you how to do it. I wanted more information about how to set up my IPAQ to connect with the internet. The book told me it could be done and how wonderful it was, but lacked specific information about which screen to go to and how to actually make it work.

I later purchased IPAQ for Dummies. This book told me what the IPAQ could do and specifically how to do it. It was great. The Dummies book also gave lots of information on programs that are very helpful to add to your IPAQ.

I was disappointed with IPAQ Pocket PC but very happy to get my hands on IPAQ for Dummies!

I bought this book based on highly favorable reviews here. I found this book to be a total waste of time and money. This book may be useful if you are a complete newbie, don't have access to an IT guy/gal and haven't a clue how to do a web search for info/tips.

Otherwise, don't bother. There is little info on the newer IPAQ's and none on the 2003 OS. This is hardly surprising given the 2002 copyright. Some 30% of the pages are dedicated to promotions of peripherals and games (pages 247 to 352 out of 352 pages, not including appendices). Most of the peripherals are now obsolete. More importantly, all this info can be found at any PDA site, for free.

This is a VERY basic text, yet it doesn't cover important items such as data backup and recovery. If it does, it certainly isn't listed in the index. Need to find out how to reset your IPAQ? Forget it. Not in the index and nowhere to be found in the text. However, you will find "Marble Madness" and "bags, carrying."

The text discusses various brands of storage cards, but fails to inform you on how to transfer data onto those cards. Two solid pages are dedicated to specs for an IBM hard drive - info which is available, for free, on the web. Nevermind the question of why someone who needs a hard drive for his PDA would be using this "IPAQ for the severely tech challenged" book?

Compare this to the three pages which the writer begrudgingly alots to troubleshooting and you get a sense of where the priorities are with this book. And by the way, those troubleshooting tips are either available on the web at the IPAQ webpage (guess what? for free) or for issues which have been resolved.

Do a Google search. It'll save you time, frustration and money.

In a bold and broad swipe, Joan DeJean's book Ancients Against Moderns attempts to draw out the parallels between the cultural debates that wracked France in the late 17th century and the contemporary arguments over virtue, values, taste, and tradition that now divide the United States. DeJean is a knowledgeable guide to the intricacies of the "Querelle des Anciens et des Modernes," focusing particularly on how the debate unfolded in the French Academy between Charles Perrault, an advocate of the Moderns, and Nicholas Boileau, the protector of staid, classical tradition. In describing this debate, DeJean also succeeds in tracing the development of new concepts and meanings, such as the notion of a public audience for literature and an alteration in the language of sentiment and emotion in French letters.

She also makes clear just how much was at stake in what may now seem a rarefied disagreement. In reality, matters of moral relativism, the mutability of political forms, and possibilities of social and scientific progress and discovery all hung in the balance. The author's attempts to draw parallels between the past and present debate about cultural change would have been strengthened if the book was not so centered on Gallic examples. Nonetheless, DeJean's book is a stimulating work that succeeds in making clear that ideas matter and history can repeat.

As the end of the century approaches, many predict our fin de siècle will mirror the nineteenth-century decline into decadence. But a better model for the 1990s is to be found, according to Joan DeJean, in the culture wars of France in the 1690s—the time of a battle of the books known as the Quarrel between the Ancients and the Moderns.

DeJean brilliantly reassesses our current culture wars from the perspective of that earlier fin de siècle (the first to think of itself as such), and rereads the seventeenth-century Quarrel from the vantage of our own warring "ancients" and "moderns." In so doing, DeJean shows that a fin de siècle taking place in the shadow of culture wars can be more a source of constructive cultural revolution than of apocalyptic gloom and doom. In Primitives in the Wilderness, Peter van Wyck brings the radical environmentalism known as deep ecology into an encounter with contemporary social and cultural theory. At last - endowments for the "every charity".......2005-09-20

Diana Newman has written a wonderful book on endowment, appropriate for the thousands of non-profit organizations who deserve to live in perpetuity, and yet don't have large fund development programs. I ordered it March 2005, and have since included it in curriculum for educating my nonprofit clients. Their feedback? The book is easy to comprehend, and full of useful information.

Ms. Newman's understanding of the issues, and her practical suggestions, are right on!

A New Book with the Latest Techniques.......2005-06-07

Endowments really make the difference in which non-profits are going to survive for the long term. The steady income from an investment portfolio provides a base that can sustain the existance of the non-profit during bad times.

The techniques needed for obtaining endowment funding are quite different than those used to secure funds to answer immediate needs. The author has been a professional fundraiser for many years. Yet, when she started she was assigned a series of tasks including fundraising, a membership program, a volunteer corp, and "Oh yes, establish an endowment."

As she says, this is the book she wishes she had had to start her fundraising career. This is a combined how-to book and a how-to-think book. It talks of every aspect of endowment funding from what is an endowment to measuring the success of your efforts. Inbetween are stories of projects that have been conducted by successful fundraisers.

There are very few books on endowments, this is the most recent and reflects the current state of the investment marketplace and what has been successful lately.

This book is essential. It is easy to read, and you can use it as a reference for when ever the hard questions come up. Everyone on your staff will need a copy by their desk.
