4 out of 5 stars Missed Opportunity, Uncomfortably Commercial.......2002-06-16

Churchill was, without question, a fine man and example for us to follow. Learning more about Churchill, what made him great, and how he influenced history is a worthy endeavor.

Being motivated and inspired to pursue higher objectives in life, to really make a difference in the world is also a worthy endeavor. Emulating features of Churchill's life to craft your own success is also worthwhile.

As I began this book, I found myself reading sections to my wife. Good stuff here! The author's own words as well as the quotes from Churchill and other luminaries were getting my attention. I began to understand why several of my friends are such devoted students of Churchill and his influence. The first 37 pages were great.

Then Chapter 5 hit me like a bucket of ice water. I discovered to my astonishment that the author is also a distributor of behavioral style learning materials produced by Inscape Publishing. Most of the balance of the book is a description of the four principal behavioral styles and how various aspects of Churchill's attributes relate to the styles. I was tempted to toss the book away as a blatant commercial for Inscape products. There was nothing on the cover of the book, in the introduction, or in the title that suggested that this was the kind of book I discovered . . . unless you look closely at the category on the back cover and note that the words "SELF HELP" follow "BUSINESS."

The four behavioral styles of drivers, influencers, supporters, and conceptualizers were each presented with some explanation. Churchill's traits were related to each, apparently to validate for persons with each style that they, too, can be like Churchill. I felt some were rather force-fit. As a disclosure, I have used Inscape instruments and behavioral style knowledge for two decades and am a former national contract trainer for the company; I am quite familiar with the products and their philosophies.

At the end of the book is a blatant promotion for a wide range of Inscape products. For those readers who are interested in learning more about behavioral styles, it's helpful to have this catalog available. For those who were really interested in what made Churchill great-from an author touted as a Churchill expert, it's offensive.

I almost rated this book with three stars instead of four (out of five), but there is some good content. Kryske does relate some strong material, particularly in the forepart of the book before he got into the behavioral styles. The book is heavily seasoned with quotes (as call-outs); there's a quote from someone on almost every page. Many of the quotes are from Churchill, but also cited are other historical figures and present-day motivational speakers.

4 out of 5 stars Powerful book: simple but not simplistic.......2000-10-27

The Churchill Factors: Creating Your Finest Hour was very easy to understand. The message was simple, clear, and practical. Too many self-help books are mumbo-jumbo consultant hype about approaches that never really work. I found this book was honest and extremely usable. Everyone will be able to identify with at least one of the styles in the book. There are several chapters for each one. By applying the Action This Day questions at the end of the chapters helped me to overcome some of the obstacles I deal with at work and at home. I definitely was surprised that this was more than the usual leadership book about a famous person. The Churchill Factors made it easy for me to see why Winston Churchill was such a multi-faceted personality. Everyone would benefit from using his methodology. It's worked for me!

5 out of 5 stars A very helpful book.......2000-10-23

I am a high school senior who had to write a report on a famous leader. I selected Winston Churchill. I didn't really know much about him but found exactly what I needed in this book. I ordered it online and it arrived three days later! The book told me how I can become a leader. I could identify with some of the problems Churchill had during his life. His life was full of problems but he was still able to be successful. I think this book will help me when I go on to college next year. I already have some new ideas I want to try out at work. I would really recommend this book to others.

5 out of 5 stars Great Churchill Book.......2000-10-19

I'm a great admirer of Winston Churchill. This book is not another biography. Rather, I found a clear, understandable explanation of Churchill's leadership formula. This book showed me how to use the Churchill Factors in my life. The goal setting chapters were the best I have found on the subject. I also liked the author's encouragement concerning taking risks and overcoming obstacles.

5 out of 5 stars Practical and Inspiring.......2000-10-19

This is an extremely well done book. It is packed with practical ideas for building a better professional and personal life. Churchill is the perfect role mode for anyone wanting to be a leader or motivator of people. The book translated Churchill's method that brought him countless successes in his life to gems that anyone would find easy to apply. The book was tailored to a person's unique personality based on four well defined styles. Churchill's method was looked at from each of these different styles. This was especially valuable and thought provoking. This book is a keeper that I'll refer to again and again!

            Book Description

The glow continued and increased, the business, from the main part, ceased before it had begun. Twice in the day there was a certain stir of shepherding along the seaward hills. At times a canoe went out to fish. At times a woman or two languidly filled a basket in the cotton patch.

FOR nearly ten years my health had been declining; and for some while before I set forth upon my voyage, I believed I was come to the afterpiece of life, and had only the nurse and undertaker to expect. It was suggested that I should try the South Seas; and I was not unwilling to visit like a ghost, and be carried like a bale, among scenes that had attracted me in youth and health. I chartered accordingly Dr. Merrit's schooner yacht, the CASCO, seventy-four tons register; sailed from San Francisco towards the end of June 1888, visited the eastern islands, and was left early the next year at Honolulu. Hence, lacking courage to return to my old life of the house and sick-room, I set forth to leeward in a trading schooner, the EQUATOR, of a little over seventy tons, spent four months among the atolls (low coral islands) of the Gilbert group, and reached Samoa towards the close of '89. By that time gratitude and habit were beginning to attach me to the islands; I had gained a competency of strength; I had made friends; I had learned new interests; the time of my voyages had passed like days in fairyland; and I decided to remain. I began to prepare these pages at sea, on a third cruise, in the trading steamer JANET NICOLL. If more days are granted me, they shall be passed where I have found life most pleasant and man most interesting; the axes of my black boys are already clearing the foundations of my future house; and I must learn to address readers from the uttermost parts of the sea.

If you read only one "South Seas" book from the 1920s back, this should be the one. This Penguin issue corrects a number of inaccuracies from previous editions, including Stevenson's own error in their departure date (!) It is the classic travel and observation book of the Pacific. The early descriptions of the Marquesas are unmatched, as are the accounts of the several islands they visited in Kiribati (Gilbert Islands). The account of Tem Binoka will give you a real eye opening into an absolute ruler and his ways in the late 19th century. Reading this could start a life long interest in Pacific literature.

In his book, In the South Seas, Stevenson gives an accurate and in depth look into the people and culture of the islands of the South Pacific. The book describes Stevenson's two year journey from the Marqueses Islands, to Tahiti, then Honolulu ,and finally Somoa. Stevenson uses the great adventures he experienced and his masterfully writing skills to paint a breath taking view of the islands and thier many beauties.

I saw this book sticking out on a shelf in the library. Though I don't have a doll interest I decided to check it out. I've checked it out at least five times since then.
The book is so colorful and beautifully laid out. The woman has a sense of humor about the bizarre items of the past, some of which would never pass today like the doll Flatsy. Another item of this book was Growing Hair Cher where a person could make Cher's hair go up and down with a key.
I've shown this to other people and it always manages to get a couple of laughs.

This book is great. I am very pleased with it. It has lots of dolls to look at/look up. The dolls are catagorized by manufactorer but if you can't find your doll that way the index is extremely easy to use. It has helped me a lot in my doll collecting and it has also helped add some dolls to my want list. All in all wonderful book, worth buying.

Cindy has done it again - This is a FABULOUS guide to all those dolls we played with back then! Cindy has indexed this book by all of the popular (and not-so-popular) doll manufacturers in order by year of release. Everything is full color, with approximate secondary market values! Vinyl dolls from the 60's and 70's are rapidly growing in value on the collector's market and buyers have the BEST opportunity now to scour, ID and sell - this is one book you do not want to be without at doll shows! I enjoyed reacquainting myself with most all of the dolls displayed. Thanks, Cindy!

5 out of 5 stars Very entertaining and educational.......2000-04-29

This is a terrific book with tons of bright and detailed photos. Contains a lot of the popular dolls from this period- along with some that are not so popular (which is nice for identifying). Contains dolls such as Liddle Kiddles, Dolly Darling, Crissy, Flatsy, Playpal, Thumbelina, Barbie, Darcy, Tammy, and so many more. It is a pleasure to read so you will find yourself coming back to look at it even when you don't have a doll to identify.

This book presents an ingenious, useful and impressive design concept for the woodworker. It is a central spiral cut collapsible basket supported in a frame that can be cut in countless designs.

These baskets are made from a single piece of ¾" hardwood. There are instructions for the bandsaw or scroll saw. Over 100 full page patterns are provided and the size can be adjusted by enlarging or reducing the pattern.

Patterns include farm & wild animals, dinosaurs, teddy bears, people, vehicles, buildings and traditional baskets. Many more designs could be easily adapted to the basic basket technique.

The baskets can be used as candy or trinket dishes and are wonderful with decorative floral arrangements. They collapse for storage or use as a trivet and make great gifts.

This book is light on instructions - just 3 pages, but HEAVY on patterns. That's because this technique is very easy to learn and do. After a few practice runs, you will be turning out beautiful collapsible baskets with ease. And with over 100 different designs there is a style for everyone. These baskets caught the public eye a couple of years ago, but they are still popular. If you want to make them for fun or profit, this is -the- book for patterns.

This book mostly consists of large patterns (not reduced) for cutting a flat piece of wood such that it forms a basket when turned on its side. Making such a basket requires skill and access to a jigsaw and bandsaw.

                              Book Description

For more than twenty years, The Eden Family of Services in Princeton, New Jersey, has provided comprehensive behaviorally based services for children and adults with autism. Now Eden's founding director, David L. Holmes, Ed.D., writes about autism and the specialized programs offered at Eden in Autism Through the Lifespan, explaining how Eden's theories and practices can be replicated in other communities.

With numerous examples and case histories, Autism Through the Lifespan presents an indepth model for helping children and adults with autism that will be of interest to professionals and parents alike. It begins with an overview of what's known about autism today, then continues with discussions about Eden's approach to modifying behavior, placement and treatment, their "zero reject" policy, curriculum from early childhood to adulthood, staffing issues, inclusion, decision making, and parental roles.

Undeservedly obscure today, Rose Maddox was one of country music's biggest stars in the years after World War II; her gospel-based singing and gutsy personal style set the standard for subsequent female country artists. Music journalist Jonny Whiteside's affectionate biography spins a classic tale of hardscrabble beginnings in rural Alabama and early fame with her brothers as "the most colorful hillbilly band in America." Frank accounts of Maddox's relationships with her domineering mother and two husbands are set against a valuable delineation of the forgotten West Coast country music scene.

                              2 out of 5 stars Too Nerdy.......2003-08-15

I give one star to the author for his anecdotes about Rose Maddox's colorful mother and another star for his descriptions of the hootenannys where the Maddox family performed. But the rest of the book is too gossipy. And the prose style is too nerdy. Is this book about country & western music or ain't it ?

Who cares if Johnny Cash made a pass at Rose when they were both young and obscure ? We've heard so many times on Larry King Live about Mr. Cash's pharmaceutical drug problem and we've seen the poster in which he gives the finger to music industry executives. But we never hear about him lusting after another woman besides June Carter, daughter of Maybelle Carter. Let's keep it that way. If the author wants to smear people, why isn't he straightforward about it ? He could start a new version of the National Enquirer based in Nashville.

2 out of 5 stars Too much information in bad taste.......2002-01-21

Rose Maddox was a sadly overlooked influence on rock & roll vocal styles. Those who listened to her before they became famous include Janis Joplin. This book ignores that fact, but a still-in-print 1985 Joplin bio by David Dalton reveals it. (Janis and her legendary Austin friend Ken Threadgill called her "Rosie Maddox.") I don't know if later female rockers such as Stevie Nicks or Patti Smith ever mentioned Rose's name publicly. But we know that 1950s country helped launch rockabilly, allowing singer-guitarists like Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings to cross over on the pop charts, and we know they were familiar with Rose and her family.

Bravo to Mr. Whiteside for his stated goal of paying tribute to Ms. Maddox even if it warrants a minor publishing company and small bookstore and mail-order profits. But shame on him for including so much sensationalism. Who cares about Rose's husband walking all over her and undermining her self-confidence? Many women put up with that in the pre-feminist era.

Also, Mr. Whiteside rambles on so much about the music industry's avoidance of her name in the 70s, 80s and 90s that you wonder about his attitude. He sounds like a very intelligent person with contacts in his longtime home of Southern California who prefers talk to action. During all those years he worked on the book why didn't he do something to get Rose on a nationwide cable channel?

If he wanted to give her her due in American music history, he would have had to pick up the telephone, visit a certain restaurant and sell her to the right people. You get the feeling from his prose that he devoted all his energy to the book and then once it came out his attitude became "Buy my book" instead of "Would you like an excellent programming idea? You'd have a television monopoly on it."

Mr. Whiteside spent a lot of time with Rose, so he had to have known she wouldn't live to be ninety. He should have known his book wasn't nearly enough to get her on cable television, but his publishing deal evidently gave him a swelled head. He got his money, so why network with entertainment brokers like Joel Schumacher or Barry Levinson? What are they, phony or something? Lots of people are phony. By violating the non-phony Rose Maddox's privacy and dignity, Mr. Whiteside is doing the same stupid thing as those who profit from immortalized giants of yesteryear like Elvis, Hank Williams Sr., Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday.

If a media blitz makes the music easily available to millions, then they can overlook the dirty gossip about personal problems. But if all one has is a book by Jonny Whiteside and an obscure CD that requires four weeks of shipping and handling, then one is forced to look at the dirt without hearing the sweet sounds.

The same problem surrounded Mr. Whiteside's earlier attempt to revive the singer and sex symbol Johnnie Ray as a milestone in American music history. Johnnie suffered even worse oblivion than Rose because he died five years before the Whiteside book hit the market. Mr. Whiteside interviewed this singer in 1989 more than once and sat on the project while Johnnie's health failed. Five years later bookstores offered an "alternative" account of homosexual sex connected with Johnnie's music that required four weeks of shipping and handling. That was late 1994 and 1995. Where is Johnnie's music in 2002? Still four weeks away. Translation: a few retirement villages.

When you make your next attempt at preservation, Mr. Whiteside, use your noggin. You seem to idolize aging talented people who can't think for themselves, promote themselves or get attached to "a Colonel Tom Parker." They embody the naivete and "Let sleeping dogs lie" attitude of White America in the 1950s. So you have to help them. Please do it better. I would if I could afford white skin, a home in Burbank and a car that endures freeways. My Internet access by itself does nothing.

5 out of 5 stars Sad but informative, heartfelt bio.......2001-08-10

This biography of West Coast country pioneer Rose Maddox is not to be missed. Actually, it's a rather heart-wrenching story: despite the phenomenal success of her family's kickass country band (Rose Maddox and the Maddox Brothers), Rose herself had a terribly hard life. Shrewishly dominated by her mother, screwed over by her first husband, and unable to sit still long enough to enjoy her family life, she struggled for decades to try and find equilibrium and independence. Reading about such a talented person being so unable to assert herself for so long is a rather painful experience. Yet the book is also a compelling history of one of the great hillbilly bands of all time: beloved by country and rockabilly fans alike, the Maddoxes were one of the most popular hard country acts of the 1940s and early '50s. They played everything in hyperdrive and did much to sculpt the sound of rocknroll, as well as the late '50s hard country revival in Bakersfield. Whiteside does a great job conveying what it was like working in the honkytonk bars, and the informal nature of the scene back then. Sadly, Rose Maddox passed away in early 1998, but this book is a fine tribute.

Ever since I saw a PBS documentary on Woody Guthrie about 15 years ago, I was anxious to find more on Rose Maddox, someone who got a brief mention on the show for her radio show with Guthrie in the Central California Valley.

Since then, I've become a big fan of her bluegrass collaborations and the dusty, hard-scrabble existence they evoke. Her plain as dirt reading of classic folk & bluegrass songs is clearly one prototype (along with Hazel Dickens) for singers like X's Exene Cervenkova, who seek to convey the joy and dignity of American country music to new generations.

Reading about the incredibly tenacious Maddox family during the Dust Bowl days is actually more about that period in American history than it is merely just Rose's musical story. One need not be a fan of the music to regard her incredible tale with awe. It is a story about overcoming odds, about remaining irrepressible in the face of tumult and poverty, and having the wisdom to trust in what brings you joy.

"Ramblin' Rose" should be required reading for anyone interested in the history of the Okie migration to the West Coast. Its vivid portrait of Rose's own life becomes the telling of universal human truths.

3 out of 5 stars my perspective of over inclusive biographies as weeding.......1999-06-25

Rose Maddox in her declining years as an active performer was a somewhat tragic figure as is often the case with petered out seminal performers, who had otherwise faded from the stage for all the usual reasons. All to often these days obscure figures such as Maddox are coaxed out of their private retreats from the brutal carnival of greed and political power- brokering that is the reality of the entertainment business in the pressure cooker of hype, nepotism, and good looks which characterizes show business in America today. Rose Maddox knew the appeal that the cachet of turn of the century speech in Alabama had and continues to have for the now fifth and even sixth generation native Calif- ornians whose grandparents and great-grand par- ents migrated West from not only Alabama but Tennessee, Texas, Oaklahoma, Kansas Etc. as the well known song Do Re Mi, from the pen of Woody Guthrie, attested to. This biography even in- cludes a preface of sorts written by the great bard of the Dustbowlers himself. Knowing as she did that the appeal of C&W music lies not in the notes sounded to the four- harmony of Southern Gospel musical traditions, but rather in the well turned phrase and the druggy mannerisms of folk-heros like Hank Williams or the causual guitar slinging style of Merle Haggard coupled with Hag's own weird persona on stage. This biography even goes out of its way to tell us Haggard was one of the pall-bearers at Fred Maddox's funeral. Point being most of what this ragbag of memorabilia boils down to, is the same thing Rose herself came to learn, namely that the ledgends of the present are just rehashed, stirred up and spruced up versions of the ledgends of the past.To me there's nothing wrong with show business myths, they serve to preserve and perpetuate ingroup social mores and most of the major racial and ethnic groups prominent in modern-day America have them. My goal is here to simply point out that myths are being perpetuated here, but of course myths are the meat of what is consumed in today.

... i found this book so interesting because a child's life was overlaid on the story of the holocaust. the amazing thing about the book is the genuineness of the child's point of view. she has real problems that are independent of the madness going on around her, yet which are,of course, strongly affected by it. often these kinds of books are cutesy and inauthentic; this one is amazingly real. the child's viewpoint changes, subtly, over time as she is growing up in the midst of this unreal world. it is quite an accomplishment.

Suzanne Mehler Whiteley was born in Amsterdam in 1935 and saw the ravages of World War II through a child's eyes. Appel Is Forever: A Child's Memoir is written in the voice of a young girl and describes the years before the invasion of Holland, her experiences during the German occupation, her time spent as a prisoner within the infamous Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, and her childhood after the end of the war both in Europe and then the United States. This is a compelling, candid account of atrocities. Yet through the young Suzanne's introspection, we see beyond the history of events to a deeper meaning. Here is the miracle of having survived when millions of other perished, and after the horrors of the Holocaust, the promises and hardships of the American dream. Appel Is Forever is a welcome and unusual contribution to both Holocaust studies, Judaic studies, and Women's studies reading lists and reference collections.

This book is anautobyogryiffy of a young girl. This book is really good because it is from the eyes of a child. It made me even more into the books, because it is what it might of been like for me. The girl's father was a rabbi in Holland. The girl's mom & dad got her Grandmothers out of Germany so they could try to sevive together. In 1943 they were taken to Westerbork (in Holland) and then to the famous Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. (in Germany) She satyed for two years. She survived but her father and grandmothers did not. The book tells about her life after World War II. In England, New York, and Chicogo were she stayes with reletives and overcomes the tragity of the war.
