Book Description

This highly regarded book gives a lucid and balanced account of fellow travellers in Europe and America: those individuals who were not willing to become Communists but were attracted by the socialist systems of the Soviet Union, the Popular Democracies, and Communist China.

5 out of 5 stars Enlightening Read.......2003-08-21

David Caute chronicles how intelligent, and sometimes brillant, individuals allow a vision of utopia (the Communist or Socialist Society) to blind them to brutal realities of their experiment. The book illustrates the very human failing to believe in an idea but ignore its consequences. These people sincerely WANTED TO BELIEVE in a better future. Their desire was so powerful that they were willing to deny human suffering. Interestingly, Caute points out that many fellow travelers were also chauvanistic. They expected democracy and civil liberties for Western Countries but thought that a dictatorship of the proletariat was acceptable for the developing world (Russia and China). It's fashionable now to pan Communists, Socialists, and fellow travelers for falling into this trap. They had a vision of a better society but failed to acknowledge the normal human evil to abuse power. However, Caute's thesis can apply to anyone who follows an idea blindly: such as classical liberals today who advocate market fundamentalism to the developing world but ignore the poverty such policies have frequently caused.

5 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful.......1998-10-21

Caute does what the fellow travellers refused to: take what people said at face value. He exposes how easily so many intellectuals shrugged off the piles of bodies amassed by communism in the name of some vague good. Teffirying.

                    Book Description

Two pioneer balloonists, Tom Gatch in 1974 and Larry Newman in the early 1990s, led widely reported stratospheric expeditions that nearly earned them a place in aviation history. They both used pressurized balloons, a dangerous and sophisticated type of aircraft, and sought the swift wind of the jet stream to carry them forward.

In the first story, a determined, self-financed and self-reliant Tom Gatch in his Light Heart tries to become the first man to conquer the Atlantic Ocean alone by balloon. Ascending under a 10-balloon cluster, he makes it halfway across before disappearing, and the Department of Defense mounts a massive but futile mid-ocean search. What happened to him? Why did he do it?

In the second story, Larry Newman leads an international crew in Earthwinds, the most expensive and heavily marketed balloon expedition ever undertaken, attempting to become the first to fly around the world non-stop. He often said that his 354-foot tall aircraft was more complicated to fly than the Space Shuttle. He makes three ascents, each with a different crew.

With amusing, anguishing and astonishing frankness, the aeronautical adventures of Light Heart and Earthwinds are presented for the first time from a true insiderÂ's perspective.

I just finished reading the book. The two stories presented are amazing. I'd really like to know more about the technical details of both projects, but none the less, the book is an engrossing page turner. The stories of the Earthwinds are particularly amazing.... could the program really keep continuing with the utterly amazing amount of drama therein? The book presents an amazing contrast of big project versus small project. Recommended reading!

5 out of 5 stars Just Wind, two tales about pioneers in aeronautics........2003-09-22

I have knowledge about both of the stories in this book. I can tell you that both of these stories are really true and that alone makes it better than any fiction. It is amazing how this author was able to retain all of that detail and then narrate it so interestingly.

                    THE NEW YORK TIMES

In the quest for ultimate achievement--the scaling of the highest peak or a descent to the deepest ocean trench, for example--even heroic efforts often fall short of victory. The losers, alas, usually end up as forgotten footnotes to history.

But monumental failures can be as fascinating as successes. Although Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay went into the record books in 1953 as the first climbers to conquer Mount Everest, climbing fans will forever remember an earlier failure: the fatal attempt on Everest's summit in 1924 by George Leigh Mallory, who disappeared a few hundred yards short of the mountain's mist-shrouded peak.

Bill Armstrong's Just Wind brilliantly chronicles two of ballooning's magnificent failures--the ill-fated 1974 attempt by Col. Tom Gatch to be the first balloonist to cross the Atlantic Ocean, and the struggle by Larry Newman and his Earthwinds balloon team two decades later to circle the earth non-stop.

As a long-duration balloon pilot himself, Mr. Armstrong was a close friend of Col. Gatch. He also served as spokesman for the Earthwinds group, and his insider's perspective endows this book with rare technical details and insights into the sometimes bitter human conflicts that often characterize big-league ballooning.

For any reader awakened to the heady thrill of long-distance ballooning, this book is a must.

                    AKRON BEACON JOURNAL

Bill Armstrong provides a compelling look from the inside at the dreams and efforts of two men to expand the world of ballooning.

His book is the definitive and detailed inside story of two aerial expeditions and the men and women behind those dreams. It is a book for those who care about expanding aerial frontiers and humans working to overcome challenges.

-- Bob Downing, Akron Beacon Journal

                    BUOYANT FLIGHT
(THE LIGHTER THAN AIR SOCIETY BULLETIN)

As an experienced balloonist himself, Bill Armstrong brings unique credentials to the telling of these sagas. He successfully combines a strong factual account of events with his personal observations on the motives and methods of those who sought to make ballooning history. JUST WIND fills an important gap in the chronicle of balloon history in America, and I highly recommend it.

I knew Tom Gatch. As a member of the Balloon Club of Amrerica, I helped train Tom to fly. His death was and is a tremendous loss to all of us who knew him. As interesting a book as Just Wind is, the speculations left me a little perplexed. Since Tom was not in contact with us for most of the flight it is impossible to describe what he was doing unless you are just trying to tell a story. I had high hopes about reading the book and was a bit disappointed.

I also believe that there was technical details left out of the book which might have explained his predicament a bit better. All in all, however, it is good to have some documentation about Tom's attempt. I am happy to have the book on my shelf. It is too bad that more isn't known about the flight itself. Now if someone wants to write about Bob Burger you might have an even more sorrowful tale.

                      Book Description

Cases are organized over four periods: a 25-year formative period from 1890 to 1914 in which most of today's issues were foreshadowed; a second 25-year period from 1915 to 1939 in which the "rule of reason" forced courts to investigate the actual consequences of business practices; a 33-year period from 1940 to 1973 in which the per se rule and a concern about industry concentration provided the predominant models for analysis; and the "modern period" of more than 20 years, which is a desirable synthesis of the second and third periods. The organization provides a sense of the economic and other intellectual traditions that produced strikingly parallel developments of the various doctrinal issues at any given point in our history.

Leigh and Leslie Keno are twins with a single passion--the pursuit of American antiques. One (Leigh) is an antiques dealer in New York. The other (Leslie) is a director at Sotheby's, New York. Together with Joan Barzilay Freund--a New York-based freelance writer who specializes in American antiques--they tell tales of the hunt.

Some of the stories come from the twins' childhood in upstate New York (they started keeping antiques dealer diaries when they were 12); one riveting anecdote is set more recently in the auction room of Sotheby's, circa January 1999. But all of the treasure-hunting episodes are imbued with the drama and thrill of the chase as well as the bliss of aesthetic appreciation.

It doesn't matter whether you, yourself, have swapped bids in tense auction rooms for million-dollar furnishings, or traipsed through small-town flea markets in search of sleepers, or gained the bulk of your antiquing know-how while firmly planted in your easy chair watching the Antiques Roadshow. Because the Keno twins know their stuff and they evoke the rich details of antiques, such as the creamy surfaces of 18th-century ceramics and the plum-pudding mahogany sheen to the rare secretary bookshelf. The passion that drives them is evident on every page of the book, and that emotion is the hook that allows them to so effectively share their fascination with the reader. To read their stories is to enter their world, and while the color photographs are certainly appreciated, the prose does a fine job by itself to portray the lure of the Seymour table and the Canton ginger jar. Along the way, the life stories and distinctive personalities of the twins come through, too. By time you finish the final chapter, you will have learned a lot about American antiques, and even more about the happy souls of two brothers pursuing their craft. --Stephanie Gold

4 out of 5 stars THESE TWO BIZARRE FOPS REALLY KNOW FURNITURE.......2007-03-01

Honestly these two guys make my skin crawl, but they really know their furniture, they are like encyclopedias of knowledge, not quite the great Albert Sack, but getting there. This is a very interesting book on some amazing furniture, and the stories are amazing. These guys really have an eye for a treasure I must admit, but i cant help shaking the image of them on their show, they are just really odd, like some old money WASP, from Newport or Long Island, I have a feeling in thirty years they will have their own Grey Garden.

                          1 out of 5 stars Disappointing read.......2007-01-23

I looked forward to this book but found it sorely lacking.

My biggest gripe is that the brothers jump in a few pages from their modest upbringing to b ig shot dealers wheeling and dealing million(s) dollars items, There is no discussion of how this jump was made, or how they could manage to finance the huge purchase prices they describe. Further the books deals in antiques that only the top .00001 percent of the population could actually buy. Nor is there anything about the business end of things, like how one becomes a top line dealer.

Instead of focusing on real tips and experiences acquiring items that a serious (middle class) collector could hope to acquire, they focus on items that most millionaires would find expensive.

Don't expect this book to have any relevancy to you.

                          4 out of 5 stars Keno Brother's a rare treat.......2006-07-05

I bought a cassette tape of Hidden treasures from Amazon.com for $17.95.

Leslie and Leigh Keno take turns reading their chapters that they wrote for their book themselves. They do a great job and I greatly enjoyed hearing their story told in their own voices. I found them deeply engaging and I loved hearing their story of roaming the rural hills near their home in Mohawk NY, as they rode tautem on a small motor bike looking for long lost treaures near their home; in the form of old barn hinges, or digging through garbage dumps that were over a hundred years old. And their mom who'd see them leave and say, "their go the twins go, off in their own little world." And they do seem to go off in their own world a lot of the time.

Leslie Keno went to an interview at the Mather House admissions building that he was applying to the University there, and ended up crawling around on the floor examining the undersides and legs of furnature. A little later he got a tap on the shoulder as it was time for the interview, and he remembered the concerned looks of parents as he walked by. He didn't say it, but I wondered if he was embarrassed?

Later on in another chapter describing a highly stylized pier table complete with womanly head and upper torso figures that supported the top of the table--I think it was Leslie that time too--Even though he and his brother made a real effort to carefully pronouce each word and keep the pacing even; Leslie almost but not quite stumbled over the word bosom. Yes Leslie, it is a bosom and some call them breasts too. But I thought it was sweet that he almost flubbed. Leigh on the other hand had no trouble telling about an almost sensual moment he had as he was running his hands over a seat cushion(yes, I said a seat cushion), then turned it over to check the underside for the age of the piece.

If you think that this book is a primer for how to be a antique dealer you would be mistaken, and you'd also be mistaken if you thought this would be a dry uninteresting book. Instead what we have here is a very honest look at how two young men grew-up in a very loving, and supporting family. And how their interest in antiques was nutured. It really is interesting seeing how these two brothers evolved into the top notch antique dealers, and appraisers that they are today.

The only thing that disapointed me was; I would have liked to have heard more about their youth.

I highly recommend the book on cassette or in book form. Right now I'm wondering what I missed not having the actual book? Probably a whole lot more pictures. Okay! I'm ordering the book right now!

In a phrase, these are high class pickers with an art of gold.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad, not bad at all!.......2005-05-15

I too, was a recruit from the Antiques Road Show- they are the only reason I am interested in the show (they get so dang happy over a good find) and therefore the ONLY reason I grabbed this book.

I am interested a little in antiques but MORE interested in a good "discovery" or score at a yard sale.... I found this book had it all - it is very well written and kept my interest the entire "read".

The brothers take turns between chapters and keep your interests in them completely equally.

I was also impressed just how their parents influenced them in such an "uncool" hobby, that ultimately led to their popularity and provided them both with success.

Many parents could take a few tips about being involved in their kids hobbies, and lives. They not only were into antiques, but dirtbikes and fishing! Just well rounded kids, and that comes from one place- attention from home.

Any how- I am off my soapbox. I do reccomend this book because it is INTERESTING, it keeps your attention and both get to show their own personalities.

I read it and shared it... have found the same response: surprise that it was INTERESTING! That we wanted to finish it. I am so glad these guys are on TV, I really appreciate the knowledge they are willing to share with us. That is why I like them; their lovely antiques packed minds!

                          Some brains are very attractive!

This short book would be a great primer for a first-time mom. Elizabeth Bruce touches on home, birth center & hospital birth & her down-to-earth style is refreshingly honest!

Instead of wasting time on What to Expect and the Girlfriend's Guide, this is what women should be reading. We all put "no episiotomy" on our birth plans - now read exactly why and how to set yourself up for a birth without one.

I have read Ms. Bruce's works in other birth publications and this is a great guide. It is a quick read - but a must-read - especially if you are birthing in a hospital, with an obstetrician.

Elizabeth shares stories of other women who have their children at home. I want to thank Mrs. Bruce for writing this perfect book for women like me who want all the best up-to-date facts about childbirth. Rhonda Kent

                                            Book Description

Back in the 1960s, the Burke Family Singers were America's answer to Austria's von Trapp Family. Throughout that tumultuous decade the fabric of the nation's life was of course torn by the war in Vietnam and the impassioned drive of the civil rights movement. It was against this churning backdrop that a large Rhode Island family - mother, father and 10 children - set out on the first of what would prove a long series of coast-to-coast tours, whose only purpose was to bring the glorious sound of their music to audiences everywhere. They performed in major cities and remote small towns, and during their travels they met the von Trapp Family and recorded an album of Christmas carols with them. Sarah Jo Burke, the youngest of the five daughters, has written a book that celebrates American values in the best sense and, if nothing else, proves that the family that sings together stays together.

A very heartwarming story about a hardworking and talented Irish-Catholic family. The travels and travails of the Burkes as they rehearse and perform across the country during the turbulant decade of the sixties against a background of racism and Vietnam, is a nonstop adventure for the reader also. The book brought back many memories for me personally as my family also traveled in the sixties in a 64 Chevy Belair wagon-but we only needed one! The story just goes to show how much has changed since that era. Or has it? An outstanding story-Highly recommended.

The Burke family brought many childhood memories of my own past. This family represented everything good in America at a time when our country was experiencing issues of racial hatred, turmoil and unrest. I was fortunate to attend the same Catholic school and parish as this wonderful family and remember the Christmas shows on local televison. I recommend this book be read by all families to show the love, devotion and moral values instilled in this family as an inspiration to all!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great family reading.......2004-02-12

The Burke singers lived my fantasy. I too am from a large Catholic family who grew up in the fifties and sixties and the relationships of the siblings in the book and the antics of the little brothers brought back so many childhood memories for me. My elderly mother has been mute for several years due to a stroke, but she was able to communicate her pleasure in reading the book and seemed to like it better than any others she has read. This book could be read and shared by children, parents and grandparents in a family. The story is told with humor and affection and it was just too bad the trip had to end. Don't think it hasn't been fun... Because it HAS!

                                            5 out of 5 stars Grandmother's Fudge.......2004-01-24

When my grandmother was alive she made fudge. It was so rich, you couldn't eat it. You had to sort of scrape little bits off with your teeth - if you took a full bite you'd probably die, it was so rich and sweet and wonderful.

I've been reading this book rather like eating Nana's fudge. I don't want it to end, so I'm doing little bits at a time. When I first started I read something like the first five chapters without taking a breath. Now I'm rationing.

Wonderful. Just wonderful. I'm 57 years old, so this is my time, the shows they appeared on, I watched. When I get back to NY I am going to go the Museum of Broadcasting and watch tapes.

The only thing that could make reading this book better would be playing the tape of the Burke Family SIngers doing Christmas carols in the background.

Now if I only had some fudge....

This book shows that truth is easily as fascinating as fiction. The Burke family's exploits would be beyond belief if there weren't so much proof they actually happened. This book made us laugh and cry while we returned to a decade when America's innocence was unpeeled in the face of racial oppression, assassinations, and the agony of going to war on foreign soil. Seen through the eyes of a child innocently traveling the country singing with her family, and laced with the family dynamics of ten children on the road, Burke's book left us stunned, warmed, and thinking deeply about our country today. If you're looking for a book that leaves you filled up, read this.
