          Book Description

While the Western world adheres to a beauty ideal that says women can never be too thin, the semi-nomadic Moors of the Sahara desert have for centuries cherished a feminine ideal of extreme fatness. Voluptuous immobility is thought to beautify girls' bodies, hasten the onset of puberty, heighten their sexuality and ripen them for marriage. From the time of the loss of their first milk teeth, girls are directed to eat huge bowls of milk and porridge in one of the world's few examples of active female fattening.
Based on fieldwork in an Arab village in Niger, Feeding Desire analyses the meanings of women's fatness as constituted by desire, kinship, concepts of health, Islam, and the crucial social need to manage sexuality. By demonstrating how a particular beauty ideal can only be understood within wider social structures and cultural logics, the book also implicitly provides a new way of thinking about the ideal of slimness in late Western capitalism. Offering a reminder that an estimated 80% of theworld's societies prefer plump women, this gracefully written book is both a fascinating exploration of the nature of bodily ideals and a highly readable ethnography of a Saharan people.

          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful ethnography.......2004-10-31

"Feeding Desire" is a revealing work of ethnography concerning the culture of force-feeding adolescent girls so that they turn into "bountiful" figures, figures considered attractive among the Saharan Moors. I have used it in two different courses on Africa and students have responded very favorably to it. The discussions about the book were the liveliest of the semester. The book is beautifully written with very good photographs. It is an excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars Great beginners book.......2005-10-08

Step-by-step, easy to follow instructios, with clear pictures and diagrams to indicate where to find the tools they want you to use. The projects in this book teach the basics in ways that users will be able to put to immediate use for their own projects. I found it especially useful since I have no training at all with any graphics programs, this book really helped me understand what tools were available and how to use them in effective ways.

I cannot stress enough, however, that this is a beginner's book. If you have experience with Fireworks (or probably any other similar program) this may not be the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars A value for money purchase.......2005-09-30

This book starts from the very basics in a clear and well set out format making it one of the value for money books on my shelf.

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference Book.......2005-09-23

I have been through this book and its companion book for Freehand MX and have the same comment for this one that I had for the Freehand MX version. Almost Great! Thorough enough to be used as a reference but the actual examples need some editing. There was a lack of consistency to simple things like "select both items" being sometimes written and sometimes left to the reader to figure out. Overall, a good book for a beginner who will refer to it often for a reference.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Tutorial (but not as good as the one for DREAMWEAVER).......2005-07-24

I was blown away by the "Training from the Source" tutorial for DREAMWEAVER. That is why I had to have this one for FIREWORKS. I have to admit to being a little disappointed but that is mostly do to the previous book setting the mark so high. This is still a great tutorial to learn the program, especially for someone like me who knows nothing about this subject. This book is designed as an intro, not an advanced course.

A few of the qualities that this series seem to share are clear instructions, easy to read print, illustrations and screen shots that are big enough to be useful and an approach that continues to build on what has been done before. This is especially true with the examples on the enclosed CD.

What disappoints me is that this book is primarily designed from the approach of using FIREWORKS as a stand alone program. There is material that covers the integration with DREAMWEAVER but this material is neither as copious nor as clear as I would have liked. Still, I know a lot more today than I did 2 days ago.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good for beginners.......2005-07-23

This book is really great if your an absolute beginner. The instructions are easy and the tutorials with the CD make the book a great way to learn fast and easy. Maybe this is not the book you want if you really want to go into Fireworks more. I felt like I needed to know more stuff than the book taught me. There's a lot you can do with Fireworks, but the book doesn't take you all the way. It's a really great way to get from absolute beginner to advanced intermediate.

          Book Description

Chosen an "Outstanding Book on the Subject of Human Rights in the United States" by the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Human Rights.

In this volume of incisive essays, Ward Churchill looks at representations of American Indians in literature and film, delineating a history of cultural propaganda that has served to support the continued colonization of Native America.

During each phase of the genocide of American Indians, the media has played a critical role in creating easily digestible stereotypes of Indians for popular consumption. Literature about Indians was first written and published in order to provoke and sanctify warfare against them. Later, the focus changed to enlisting public support for "civilizing the savages," stripping them of their culture and assimilating them into the dominant society. Now, in the final stages of cultural genocide, it is the appropriation and stereotyping of Native culture that establishes control over knowledge and truth.

The primary means by which this is accomplished is through the powerful publishing and film industries. Whether they are the tragically doomed "noble savages" walking into the sunset of Dances With Wolves or Carlos Castaneda's Don Juan, the exotic mythical Indians constitute no threat to the established order.

Literature and art crafted by the dominant culture are an insidious political force, disinforming people who might otherwise develop a clearer understanding of indigenous struggles for justice and freedom. This book is offered to counter that deception, and to move people to take action on issues confronting American Indians today.

1 out of 5 stars Bad research from an Indian who isn't.......2005-05-09

Ward Churchill's bad research is evident in the fact that he can't even spell names correctly. More serious is the fact that Churchill is NOT an American Indian. His tribal membership was honorary and his diatribes have angered the very people for whom he claims to speak. Avoid at all costs and seek real facts from real historians or AIM.

1 out of 5 stars Honorary Indian Lit.......2005-03-10

Ward Churchill's "scholarship" would be laughed out of publishing houses if he did not have the "excuse" of supposedly being Indian--that ugly bit of reverse racism that presumes that Indians can't do first-rate academic or intellectual work and ignores the achievements of real American Indian scholars like Joseph Marshall, D'Arcy McNickle, Kate Shanley, Vine and Ella Deloria, and Donald Fixico. Like Jamake Highwater, Churchill's intellectual career has been built on a foundation of patronizing racist assumptions.

In a single note while discussing his extensive study of Westerns, he manages to misspell the names of Lash Larue and Johnny Mack Brown. That's a random selection; pick your own on any page. The Devil is in the details, and an honorary Indian needs to do his homework. If you screw up the little stuff, how can we trust the big stuff? Easy answer? Don't.

Churchill's "deconstruction" of the American Western is no more accurate than the depictions of Indians he derides. Replacing one ignorant prejudice with another, however appealling, is not progress. And taking the poor research and invective of a "honorary Indian" for the views of Indian people is a mistake. With friends like this, who needs the Dawes Act?

4 out of 5 stars Good set of essays.......2004-06-18

This is a must read for anyone who has a passing interest in the Native American in popular culture. It will make any fan of Westerns (movies/books) think twice about indulging in such things. This is not as compelling as some of his other work but it is still valuable nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars ward churchill's second best, this time with improved prose.......2002-08-17

I would say this is worth 4 stars, but seeing how one reviewer is bent on giving it the worst possible to make a statement rather than a review, I decided to attempt to neutralize his rating.

Churchill's review on cultural myths and cinema tragecomedies that rewrite history to their liking are somewhat striking. One would expect that there is some bias, but to see it put under the microscope as churchill does is more than an eye-opener.

It's not another "white man steals again" books, but rather an intellectually secure book that makes claims outside the public spectrum of politics. And do I dare say, sometimes radical politics are right! Indigenous americans have been slandered. John Wayne has only secured the subtlely racist notions of indigenous savagery and such.

The truth will set you free

4 out of 5 stars Fantasies are fiction.......2001-12-07

Ward Churchill has hit upon a very important and eye opening subject for those that believe everything their history teachers and the media dishes out to them about the American Indian. Mainstream America is still in the dark about the reality of the first peoples of this country. I was moved by many portions of this book and would love to see it made into a PBS series for public consumption. The only sad part is most of the people that need to be informed wouldn't think of reading this book or watching anything on PBS. It is a consise and important work.

This book would be better and a lot shorter if all the political polemics were removed. They get in the way of some good (but old) statistical info. If the authors want to send a message they should use Email or Western Union, if it hasn't been pensioned off.

1 out of 5 stars Biased left wing view trying to promote panic.......1999-09-01

Right from the foreword that talks of "crisis" in American pensions we get nothing but whining. The authors see the Federal government as big Daddy who must put right every bad choice you make in your life. Their examples of people who lost their pensions because their employers went bust never seem to have considered putting something aside for a rainy day themselves.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful and informative book.......1998-01-09

Finally, a pension and retirement income book by someone not trying to sell you anything! Karen Ferguson and Kate Blackwell have crafted a remarkable book that combines a thoughtful analysis of what ails the current retirement income system with some "how to" advice on how to get your own retirement income and pension questions answered and disputes resolved. This is as it should be for, as a collective citizenry, we are appalling ignorant about the structure of retirement income in the United States. In the same way, it is rare to meet a person (of any level of education) who fully understands their own retirement income plan. We, as responsible citizens and as tomorrow's retirees, need to learn a whole lot more. This book is the place to start.

                  Book Description

When 16 year old Joseph Donaldson announced to his parents in 1809 that he had joined the army, they were understandably horrified, given the bleak and uncertain prospects facing a soldier at the time. Fortunately for his parents, and for us, Donaldson returned safe and sound from the Napoleonic Wars and soon put pen to paper to record his glorious (and not-so-glorious) adventures. His wonderfully graphic, gripping and often poignant memoir is completely reproduced in this volume for the first time since 1852.

                  Book Description

In Managing On Her Own, Graham's aim is not so much to theorize as it is to reveal a previously untold segment of Lillian Gilbreth's story, one that places her at the center rather than her husband Frank.

5 out of 5 stars An insightful look at the 1st lady of scientific management........1999-03-17

This book highlights the life of an incredible woman. It reveals many aspects of Dr.Lillian Gilbreth's life and how she dealt with the extraordinary challenges of society.

It is an insightful book descriptive of how her circumstances forced her into developing creative solutions in her quest for survival.

It truly reveals not only her impact in the field of scientific management (which she and her late husband had worked on for many years), but how she managed to apply her psychology skills in becoming a pioneer in the field while raising 11 surviving children and no spouse.

If you enjoyed the Hollywood movies "Cheaper by The Dozen" or "Belles On Their Toes", I highly recommend you read this book. It gives the 'behind the scene' factual story of a remarkable lady. A 'MUST' for engineering majors...specially women.

                        Book Description

The Eton schoolboy, Philip Heseltine (Peter Warlock), was not yet 17 when he first met his musical hero Frederick Delius at a concert of his works given by Sir Thomas Beecham at Queen's Hall in 1911. The next day he wrote an ecstatic letter to Delius enthusing over `such perfect performances of such perfect music'. Flattered and intrigued by the young admirer, Delius replied in warm and encouraging terms. And so began a correspondence that was to last until Heseltine's untimely death in 1930. It is fortunate that each composer kept the others' letters and, now placed in chronological order, they give a fascinating picture, not only of the two men and their music, but also of musical life in England and Europe. In their often frank writing the characters and interaction of the two men is highlighted and in their informal and often gossipy way they illuminate the musical life and many personalities of the time. Barry Smith, the author of a recent highly regarded biography of Peter Warlock, has fully researched the background of the correspondence and by means of generous annotations and linking narrative has produced a compelling story of an unusual and unique friendship between two composers.

                          Book Description

This isn't another Holocaust book, it's an adventure story, says author Hans Kahn, a Holocaust survivor who escaped from the Nazis with no more than the shirt on his back.

Luck and Chutzpah is an exciting tale of daring, escape and adventure and about not giving in. It is a gripping, poignant and sometimes funny memoir of his flight from Holland to Belgium, France and Spain, where he sailed to England to join the Dutch Navy-In-Exile. He traveled under the assumed identity of a Belgium naval cadet, went by bicycle, foot and train, hid in coal bins and stowed away on a freighter, hobnobbed with smugglers, whores, priests, resistance fighters and Nazi officers, killed a German guard and holed up for two weeks in a French brothel while the Gestapo looked for him everywhere.

He gained his manhood and lost faith in all but himself as he fought to get to the sea which had been his first love. Kahn's story, so brilliantly re-told by Hillel Halkin, one of Israel's most respected writers and translators, is both riveting and inspiring.

"Kahn's perilous escape (from the Nazis) to join the free Dutch forces is a story of daring determination and intense passion."

LUCK AND CHUTZPAH: Against All Odds

by Hans G. Kahn: The Man Who Never Surrendered

"I suppose you could call me a Holocaust survivor, but I wasn't liberated from the Holocaust. The Holocaust liberated me." - H.G. Kahn

Hans Kahn is a fighter. It's in his mature. Fifty years ago, when millions of Jews were being shepherded to their deaths, Hans G. Kahn chose to fight back. After watching his family and friends submit unquestioningly to the laws of the Germans he decided that he would not allow himself to be powerless. He would never surrender or bend.

Nothing in his youth suggests such a remarkably tough character. Born in Berlin in 1922 to a well-to-do German Jewish family, Hans spent most of his life in Holland. Despite the protests of his educated father, Hans knew he wanted to be a Jewish sailor.

When the Germans carried out a house-to-house search looking for Jews to deport, Kahn stealthily fled to Belgium. Taking on the persona of a naval cadet from Belgium, Kahn even had a meal with a Nazi officer convinced by the disguise. Yet like so many others, Hans was eventually caught by the Nazis and deported to the Vernet Concentration camp in Vichy-France.

True to his credo, Hans did not surrender, nor bend to authority. After killing a German guard, he took refuge in a church in Toulouse, where he was hidden in a French brothel that serviced German officers. Finally, Hans was taken to a farm where he remained for four months, until resistance fighters guided him to Britain. There he enlisted in the Dutch Navy-in-Exile.

After the war, Kahn helped establish and train the new Israeli navy which fought in Israel's War of Independence. He returned to Holland to go into business for himself, eventually founding Jumbo Navigation, the world's first shipping company to conceive, build and operate special ships for the transport of large, heavy units.

These days, Kahn spends his time aboard his yacht with his family or in his house Ceasaria. Still a fighter - loyal to his friends and hard on his enemies - he continues to rage at the Jews who went timidly to their deaths. Even so, he welcomes the Sabbath every Friday night, and will proudly tell you of the happiness he derived from sitting in synagogue with his grandson on Saturday mornings. The writing is absorbing and the story presented shows how one man was not willing to be caught by the Nazis or be made a victim. His daring story shows how it was possible to fight back as long as you had luck and chutzpah.
