Ralph Coury, did a very good job in explaining the world events that surrounded the origin of Egyption Arab Nationalism. The book is a combination of history, politics and biography of a great man, it is also very easy to read. AbdullRahman Azzam is my father's uncle and I learned alot about my family through this book.

This book is a very thorough and well-written introduction to the field of fraud examination. Authors' lucid and easy-to-read style with plenty of fraud story examples is helpful to digest complex concepts such as financial statement frauds and e-commerce frauds. Chapter sizes are carefully kept small. Quizzes and case studies are also well-thought out.
Some reviews on Amazon don't do this book a justice. Overall a comprehensive text book in the area of Fraud examination. For curious and interested in this field, I also recommend Financial Shenanigans: How to Detect Accounting Gimmicks & Fraud in Financial Reports, Second Edition.

As soon as I started reading this book, I had no problems keeping up with the assigned readings in my class. The examples of what people will do to decieve others and themselves are gut wrenching, but give a true picture of what people do. This book has made me consider specializing in fraud.

I found this to be one of the most poorly written texts I've ever read. It is very redundant and full of grammatical errors. It's as if two or three authors wrote the same material in their own respective words and bound it together to form one book. This same amount of material could have been covered in a comprehensive essay as opposed to a poorly written 18 chapter text book.

This book covers a host of costume jewelry, better than average photos of the manufacturer's signatures or maker's marks (very important if you are a collector!), along with good descriptions and some pricing information. Included in the back of the book are copies of some of the original advertisements for some of the jewelry. Good stuff! I'd recommend this book if you are a collector.
Valuable Costume Jewelry Guide!.......2007-04-02
Wonderful pictures! I like the way she has some jewelry shown under designer headings while she also shows groups of brooches, necklaces, etc., with various designers together. I especially like the beginning that shows the backs of designer pieces; something you don't get to see a lot in these jewelry guides. It's one of those books you take out on the porch on a nice day and go through page by page from beginning to end (for me, it was like a kid in a candy store), and by the time you get to the end, you feel much more knowledgeable about costume vintage jewelry!
Haphazard Organization.......2007-01-10
The jewelry in this guide is mainly from the author's and apparently her friends' collections. Quite a bit of the jewelry is unidentified by company. The book is strangely organized beginning with around a dozen companies, unalphabetized, followed by sections under the headings of "Quality," "Fruits & Vegetables," "Bakelite, Lucite & Other Plastics," "Parures & Demi- Parures," "Necklaces," "Bracelets," "Brooches & Pins," "Earrings," "Rings & Things," "Pebble Jewelry," and "Guilloche." Under these headings there is no discernible organization. The book concludes with a short section on contemporary jewelry, general information on reproductions and care and repair, thirteeen pages of vintage ads, and some costume jewelry internet web sites. The strengths of this book are that the photography is pretty good and the collection of figural pieces is extensive.

I am so happy to add this wonderful costume jewelry book to my collection of reference books. Very well written and I love the sections on DeLillo, Rosenstein, Claudette, Hobe and especially Calvaire since I recently purchased a magnificent Calvaire wide collar necklace & bracelet set with emerald green rhinestones. I was also happy to see the green "baked potato" set since I also have the same set but in a different color. It would be fantastic to one day find out if this set is really a Nettie Rosenstein set. Thank you so much, Ann, for featuring these special designers. Hope to see another book from you soon!

I like this book because it has an assortment of makers and not alot of history. There are alot of pictures and values which is what I am looking for.The pictures are clear. Most jewelry books seem to have inflated prices on the values of the jewelry. This book doesn't seem to be to far off base.But I'm no expert!I also like that there is a section on "Fakes".
To bad it has to come to that!It's a good book so buy it!

Very informative. Very little organization........2006-07-30
I found the opening chapters of this book very informative. However, the section of pictures could use some organization. If there is a pattern to how the pictures are organized, I have yet to discern it. Very few if any dates are attributed so it's not organized chronological. Very few pieces are attributed to designers so that's not it either. Some pages seem to have a theme but are unrelated to the page immediately before or after. It seems like photos were grouped by what would fit on the page.
Great information and the jewelry is very well photographed. If it were better organized, I'd absolutely love it.

I bought this book to supplement my collection for information on the jewelry I sell on my web site, Atlanta Vintage Jewelry. It's full of excellent pictures on black backgrounds that make the jewelry really stunning.
There are not too many books out there that feature only rhinestone pieces so I found this book to be a great addition. I recommend it to anyone who has an interest in vintage rhinestone brooches or necklaces or earrings . . . or any vintage jewelry.

I'm surprised to see this book has received such poor ratings because though I agree with other reviewers that it has its flaws, I don't think it is a bad book at all.
I bought this book at the bookstore without first looking up any reviews online. At the time, I had to choose between Aikins' book and one other book that had better photographs and a sleeker look. The Aikins' book won me over because most of the pieces are dated and they are photographed in their entirety and on their own. There is nothing wrong with focusing on a portion of a necklace or photographing a piece surrounded with props, but I also think it is important to be able to see what type of findings were common at a particular period in time (although the backs of earrings and brooches were not photographed for this book).
Most of the jewelry in this book is from the 1940s to 1950s. There are a few from the 1920s and earlier and a couple from the 1970s and 1980s. I like the variety of necklaces, bracelets, pins and earrings the author shows in this book. In fact, every time I open it, I seem to find a new piece that catches my attention even though I have read the book from cover to cover. This is not a book for those looking for historical references and explanations about the different styles and trends in jewelry fashion. For that, I would recommend such books as C. Jeanenne Bell's "Answers to Questions About Old Jewelry". "Brilliant Rhinestones," on the other hand, is more adequate as a visual reference for those who want to familiarize themselves with the "look" of a variety of pieces of vintage rhinestone jewelry.
No good deed shall go unpunished.......2005-07-05
I got the book "Brilliant Rhinestones" as a gift several years ago, and I thought at the time that the prices were way, way off - I've never seen such high and uneven prices for costume jewelry. Plus, the book's written content is extremely amateurish and, frankly, irritating in the extreme. Well, to spare my good friend's feelings I didn't share this opinion with her - told her the book was great. So, what did I get for my birthday this year? Yikes!!!!! The next edition, (20th Century Costume Jewelry) even more irritating than the first!! I bear no ill will towards the author, I'm assuming the publisher reeled her in to do another book (this stuff is kind of like the old "vanity press", isn't it?) and is counting on the book to sell just because these books are hot right now. But beware - this latest book has prices for modern jewelry that is absolutely, totally based on fantasy (for stuff you can load up on at Goodwill)and the prices for real vintage jewelry is also way off, about like her first book.

I purchased both this book and the sister companion, 20th Century Jewelry and felt that it was on my list of one of the worst photographed books that I have seen. There are two others by this same publisher that are lackluster in photography. Little information about the jewelry history is included in both books. While I appreciate all that the author has going for her (no doubt the other review was written by her husband), a little more attention to photography detail would have made this book much more enjoyable. I felt that the prices were a little over inflated which is a shame for both books because gorgeous jewelry is featured, just lousy photography to show them off.

Perhaps, those who thought negatively of this book should take into consideration the extensive time and effort on the author's part; not only does she work, raise a child, and send a husband to college, but she also collects jewelry and shares her collection with the world. It is doubtful her book is meant for the uneducated, novice collector. Maybe one should take a hiatus from critizing and look at the book for its poetics, and the great feeling and thought from Ms. Aikins. Since I contacted Ms. Aikins, I have learned many interesting facts about costume jewelry; I'm looking forward to her second book. Hopefully, it will showcase even more exquisite jewelry than the first! Kudos to you, Ms. Aikins!

I found the book instrumental in planning the shower I am hosting, especially since I am a host virgin. The author presents all the tiny details that could go wrong, and those that could make your shower perfect. The checklists and worksheets were beneficial to my planning process; I have the budget, plans, and addresses all written in the book for the shower.
The only drawbacks were the themes and games. Unoriginal. I have heard of all of them and have even played most all of the games. I have created my own theme and games.
The book is divided equally between baby and bridal showers, so I know I will be using it again in a few years... Now I feel totally prepared to give the perfect bridal shower!

I really liked this book because it did not try to give you so much information just to fill the pages. All of the hints were smart and well thought out, as were the games and recipes. I got a different book for games (it had 200 games in it) and I found only one or two that were perhaps worthwhile. This book doesn't have many games, but I used almost all of them - they are good ones, not a waste of time. I would recommend this to you if you are planning a shower, bridal or baby. I also used some of the recipes and they turned out very good. I think the SOS scallops were the biggest hit. Some of the drinks turned out great too. Good luck to you! Hint: I used the facts that are throughout the book as my questions/answers in "Bridal Jeopardy". Everyone was interested and enjoyed it!
Well worth your money..........2000-11-19
I spent days trying to find websites that would give me ideas on bridal and baby showers (I just threw the bridal shower and will throw a baby shower in about 3 weeks.) It took me so long to find these websites, and they all had the same information as each other. I finally broke down and bought this book - I wish I had done it in the first place. It has UNIQUE games (not silly ones) and a section on money and some great recipes. FYI -I made "Lu's clam dip" on page 88 and it was gone about 1/2 of the way through - it was the biggest hit! I would make a double batch if I were you. I used all of the worksheets too, they helped me organize it. I honestly think this will save you time and is well worth the money. Best of luck throwing your shower!

After taking a look at the whole book, I discovered that this book is truly only helpful to those who have no clue about how to plan a bridal/baby shower (complete idiot's guide). I have given a baby shower before and was looking for some new interesting ideas. I wouldn't recommend buying this book for ideas on games. This book was not worth the amount I spent on it. 'The Baby Shower Book: Etiquette, Decorations, Games, Food' by: Pauline Glendenning is a great book that has everything in it, especially great games!!!

I found this to be the most helpful book! The author makes everything seem so easy that I jumped right in and tried it (and I don't consider myself crafty at all!). I recommend this to ANYONE planning or even attending a shower of any kind. If the next shower you go to is dull you'll be the life of the party just knowing even one of the ideas mentioned in this book. I'm telling all of my friends!

This volume contains some of the best of Sondheim. If you have volume one you have to get number two.

This is Volume 2 in a 4-Volume set of the songs of Stephen Sondheim. I have all four volumes and, as a pianist, I am grateful to Warner Bros. Publications for making these masterpieces available to the general public. Some of Sondheim's finest inspirations are contained in this volume:
"Good Thing Going", "Take Me To The World," "Not A Day Goes By,"
and "Sunday" from the Act I finale to "Sunday in the Park With George". Also included are some numbers from the obscure, (but very funny) "The Frogs," a 1974 production performed in the Yale University swimming pool, and a dozen other songs. For Sondheim fans, and soloists in particular, this volume and its companions are treasures.
