Enhance you Exception Reporting.......2004-02-14

I have worked as an operating CFO and division controller for large divisions of several Fortune 100 companies for over 15 years. Today my focus is on recovery auditing, mainly in the accounts payable area, as it is the most fruitful area for savings in an organization.

In my years of experience I have found that increased use of regular exception reporting on the integrity of transactions offers the best assurance that the reporting is accurate and that no "surprises" are lurking in the records. ACL software has become an invaluable tool to me for this use. I have monthly and quarterly exception reporting routines established. The reports provide me with areas of potential concern for further drill down analysis. The great thing about this routine is that it helps me to: (1) spot erroneous transactions that were merely keyed incorrectly; (2) enhance the profitability of our business; and (3) highlight areas of potential fraud for my review.

ACL Software offers numerous standardized tests that can be used with some training and development on your part. I have spent some time developing my own routines. But I don't have time to develop all the routines I want to use. It is just not the best use of my time. My company has purchased several "bolt-on" applications to work with ACL. These applications allow for quick start-up and they bring the expertise of the developer immediately to your tool box. Essentially, I have tools similar to those used by either our internal or external auditors. But I don't have to go through the extra efforts to compile the reports on an annual basis. I can see the results monthly and head off any problems that may be developing.

One such inexpensive bolt-on that I use consistently is the Payables Test Set for ACL by Richard B. Lanza. The bolt-on to ACL is only $200 and for that I get:
* All of the pre-written scripts (a.k.a. batches) in ACL;
* A menu system in ACL to easily select the script I desire; and
* A book to walk me through an entire audit of accounts payable with descriptions of each script. The script descriptions not only tell me what data to get and how the script will run but also why I should use it in an audit and what to do with the results.

The routines and exception reports provided in the test set allow me to easily check numerous areas. Below are my top reports (although the Payables Test Set provides over 30):

1) Test that we are maximizing vendor discounts. The reports highlight vendors that may be getting favorable treatment by our accounts payable staff.
2) Check for potential duplicate payments to vendors.
3) Test to see if we can maximize volume purchase by viewing vendor activity across department and location boundaries.
4) Confirm vendor invoiced terms versus our negotiated/P.O. terms.
5) Assure proper authorization of payments.
6) Monitor input activity by AP operator.
7) Summarize debit memos to review for adjustments to the sub-ledger and identify potential unknown liabilities if the debit memo is no longer valid.
8) Identify any payments made to vendors that do not currently exist, or never existed, in the vendor master-file. I know, you think this can't happen. Well, it can.
9) Check payroll address information against vendor address information for any similar addresses. This routine is exceptional. It does not just look for exact matches. It looks for similarities. If you have a fraudster in your organization, they may try to send vendor payments to a name or address similar to their own. This routine will flag it for your review.

In summary, I strongly recommend the use of automated analytic review of your company's transactions. The power of ACL combined with the Payables Test Set is a valuable component in this mix. In relation to reports sold by software vendors costing tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars, the Payables Test Set provides an inexpensive and "out of the box" solution, even for the less experienced ACL user. While such bolt-on reports are never a substitute for the auditor's creative mind, they do assist in jump-starting an audit and ensuring the basics are covered right out of the gate... all for under the cost of a good departmental lunch!

This is the kind of informtion I need. Brief history of the type of quilt, things to look for that make one quilt more valuable than another within the design catagory, interesting informative bits and realistic pricing guidelines (at least from what I know first hand). This is the kind of book for which I would like to see periodic updates. One of the best pricing guide books for quilts out there. THe only reason I did not give 5 stars is that I wish it were even larger !

An EXCELLENT book for quilt lovers everywhere!.......2003-09-08

This is a wonderful book. It shows you a lot of classic quilt styles and compares two excellent versions of each style. All the quilts are priced, and the reasons for the valuation of each quilt are explained with easy-to-understand call-outs. My only regret is that this book hasn't been turned into a series. Whether you're a experienced collector or a newbie, you'll love this book!

American Treasures.......2001-12-23

If you need a quick way to learn the styles and values of American Quilts, this book is for you. Though I don't agree with the comparison values on some of the quilts, I find that those new to collecting and identifying the quilts in today's market will find this book helpful. This book provides an overview, not a comprehensive study.

A must-have well-illustrated overview of italian villas.......2000-11-02

This book is the best all-around overview of the design of Italian Villa Gardens I have found to date. This is largely due to the strength of the analytical diagrams that carefully disect the spatial organization of the villa, and faithfully explore the house-garden relationship that is the essence of these places. If you are an architecture or landscape architecture student interested in the Italian villa, the diagrams are some of the best published sources available. The text is very concise, almost too short...but this also makes the topic useful for the student with more interest in the topic than time. Fortunately the authors know their topic well enough to focus their commentary with great precision.

And he took wonderful, candid photographs of the many colorful characters who moved through Bob's world. This book, with the photographs and Jaffe's account of those exciting years, is a lens through which we have an intimate view of the young Marley. Jaffe's recollections of life with Marley are little diminished by time. Indeed, they are as colorful as the photographs, and as revealing. 120 four-color photographs.

Great Tosh pictures.......2003-12-28

GREAT pictures of Peter Tosh and of course of Bob and the rest of the Wailers . I found the book to be a bit of an ego trip for the author to point himself out at every oportunity in the pictures that he was in haming up the shot as he always seem to be Bogarting .Some how Lee always looks even more disshevled than the rastas themselves. You cant become a rasta you have to be one from time begun and it is obvious the author got on board way down the line but kudos for getting onboard that train. Rare photos of Tosh for his debut solo album are the real prize here as are some rare shots of Bob . Worth buying just for cutting out pictures and framing them. Peace to Lee.

Mixed Reviews.......2003-07-10

Although I found some rare pictures of BOB in this book, I was rather suprised to see a lot of other pictures "frozen" from live video foootage from "Rebel Music". As a result there are many pictures with very poor quality. It appears that he filled out the book with any thing he could find. I have not finished reading the book yet, but I am not that impressed with the pictures, and secondly Lee Jaffe only know BOB for a couple of years. Unfortunately we "die hard" Marley fans buy anything with Marley on it. I give the book a C rating.

a must have.......2003-05-20

finally lee JAHfee puts out a book on Bob. a great book. sometimes you can almost feel like you are there with Bob and lee and the others. his recollection is top notch. roger steffens question are just the ones i hoped he would ask lee. the photos are amazing. precise and to the point. the large coffee table format is nice too. now we just need lee's book on tosh and joe higgs.

Peter Tosh and Bob Marley photos galore.......2003-05-04

"One Love" is great for two reasons: 1) the extremely rare pictures and 2) Lee Jaffe's chronicles of the Wailers personalities and experiences.

This book is chock full of extremely rare Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, and Bob Marley photos, most of which have only been seen by those close to Lee Jaffe. As an example, if you are reading this review, you are most likely aware of Peter Tosh's Legalize It album cover...you know, the one where he is sitting in a ganja field with his pipe. Contained within the pages of this glorious book are several pictures from the Legalize It photo shoot by Jaffe, who had a trigger happy finger, and Jaffe's impeccable memory allows for detailed captions of the photos in the book.

He also tells of his experiences with Bob Marley and crew, in response to Roger Steffens' probing questions. Jaffe has a lot to say and doesn't leave any details out. I bought the book for the pictures and was very satisfied with Jaffe's words. Through Jaffe we glean minute details about what life was like for the Wailers and crew prior to "bussing it" on the international music scene. He brings those experiences to life.

As a bonus, this book is attractively laid out with vibrant color schemes that are not too busy.
