French Dressing scrutinizes the ancien régime's practices of unsafe sex, the scenarios of libertinage in which both sexes were equally stylish antagonists. It also shows that women paid unequally, sometimes fatally, for the power games of libertine experiments.

In the works of male writers--Laclos and Sade, Duclos and Prevost--the shape of narrative requires the staging of sexual conquest, rhetorical and literal undressing. The works of the women novelists who were their contemporaries--Tencin, Graffigny, Riccoboni, Charrière--also configure the social relations between the sexes but shift the emphasis to the aftermath of sexual plot: the emotional and physical consequences of a power-driven economy. Female-authored novels have been denigrated as sentimental works fit only for women's tender hearts. But in French Dressing, Nancy Miller argues that the women who wrote sentimental novels were, like their precursor Lafayette, astutely dry-eyed theorists of gender and its narratives. Bad Title, Excellent Book: Chronicles Events and Causes of Failed Arab-Israeli Peace Initiatives.......2006-04-02

This book does not get caught up in details of the Arab-Israeli conflict, but is an overview that chronicles the trail of failed peace initiatives, identifies who the individual and group players are, and contends that the Zionist perspective(i.e., pro-Israeli land rights) is justifiable from the view of history, morality, and international law. Surprisingly, the author accomplishes this through a question-and-answer format. The book ends with a critique of our day's most talked about land-for-peace plan: The Road Map to Peace in the Middle East, which is sponsored by the 'Quartet' (EU, UN, USA, Russia), embraced by Arabs, and legitimized and not yet discarded by Israel. Notably missing from this book is the biblical argument for legitimacy of Israeli land rights--that's just not the message of this book. But it is the Bible's consistent position against the land-for-peace approach that is my reason for saying the book title is just wrong in saying 'Roadmap to Nowhere,' since really it is a roadmap to "somewhere": Armageddon! ("I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted MY land."--Joel 3:2 and so on). After the underappreciated but watershed Israeli elections of this week, the book is somewhat now just an argument for arguments sake, as the last significant restraining opposition to the land-for-peace/2-state track (Israel's Likud party and its supporters) has died as evidenced by the populace overwhelmingly electing into office land giveaway parties, no longer offering popular resistance to the the Left/Moderate self-destructive approach. Nonetheless, this book is still helpful for informing, persuading, and strengthening individuals who want to be at peace with God or with their conscience about this issue that actually amounts to the question of destruction of a nation, and not just any nation, but one the Bible calls the apple of God's eye. It is the issue for our time and the issue the entire community of nations is obsessed with, thus for its import and its comprehensiveness in simplicity, I recommend this book.

An excellent guide to the Islamist conflict with the West.......2005-02-20

This book supplies some fundamental facts that are often overlooked. It makes sense to get this book just to use it to judge other works on the topic.

Here is a simple example. Many people know that hundreds of thousands of Jews fled or were expelled from Arab lands in the past several decades. But was this a response to Israel becoming a nation? No. More than 1000 Jews were killed in anti-Jewish rioting in Baghdad, Tripoli, Aden, Aleppo, Damascus, Oudja, Djerade, and Cairo in the decade prior to Israel becoming a state. It wasn't Israel that caused this. As Ben-Gad explains, it was the winning of national independence by Arab countries. For a couple of generations prior to that, European rule had protected the Jews to some extent.

The author summarizes the mistakes of the failed Oslo peace process. The biggest problem was legitimizing Arafat as a partner for peace and imposing his rule over Arabs in the West Bank and Gaza. Although Arafat talked about his evil intentions all the time, this was ignored. Israeli negotiators were inexperienced, were driven by fantasy rather than reality, were too trusting (they assumed that both sides wanted peace), and did not consult the Israeli army. A very small majority of legislators passed the agreement to sign the Oslo accords, allowing this to suffice was a procedural error in retrospect. Arafat was incorrectly considered as someone who could crush Arab opposition to peace: using a dictator in such a role would have been a moral and strategic error even had Arafat wanted to do all this. The agreements made a mockery of Israeli laws and red lines, giving many of Israel's opponents the feeling that they could get Israel to agree to absolutely anything.

There were other big problems with Oslo. One was that once the agreement was signed, Israeli negotiators went far beyond anything that the Israeli public or voters would have agreed to. This could not have happened had the main issues been decided at once, rather than left to the end of the process. Worst of all, Israel was expected to keep its promises while the Arab side was not required to.

To his credit, Ben-Gad notes that the Israeli settlements promote peace. There can be no peace if we all agree to something so arbitrary as to ban Jews from the West Bank while allowing Arabs to live in Israel proper. A couple of hundred thousand Jews live in the West Bank, and by doing so, they legitimize the right of over a million Arabs to live in Israel proper. The author points out that the West Bank is not occupied territory but disputed territory.

What about the proposed "Road Map" for peace? The author has some concerns about it. The biggest is that it will not stop incitement against Israel. That alone will preclude peace.

I'll mention a few of the author's other concerns with the Road Map. It will reward terrorists and give them a state from which to operate. It will freeze West Bank Jewish settlements but not West Bank Arab ones. That will concede the West Bank to the Arabs: if Jews do not have the right to move there, they certainly do not have the right to be sovereign there. With all these concessions, the issues left to the end will be about how the division of Jerusalem is to be accomplished and how many Arabs will be allowed into Israel (confirming that the purpose of a new Arab state is to serve not as a place Arabs can move into but one Arabs can use to destroy Israel). In addition, the Road Map will use international conferences to put pressure on Israel to make immoral and counterproductive concessions to terrorists.

Many on both sides of this conflict regard it to be about the fate of Israel, which both sides see as very important. I think both sides are wrong. Israel is not all that important, after all, it is small. But it would set a dangerous precedent for everyone on this planet for the international community to arbitrarily give in to irredentist terrorist demands to deprive Asian Jews of their rights to life, liberty, and property.

Medicine played an important role in the early secularization and eventual modernization of German Jewish culture. And as both physicians and patients Jews exerted a great influence on the formation of modern medical discourse and practice. This fascinating book investigates the relationship between German Jews and medicine from medieval times until its demise under the Nazis.

John Efron examines the rise of the German Jewish physician in the Middle Ages and his emergence as a new kind of secular, Jewish intellectual in the early modern period and beyond. The author shows how nineteenth-century medicine regarded Jews as possessing distinct physical and mental pathologies, which in turn led to the emergence in modern Germany of the "Jewish body" as a cultural and scientific idea. He demonstrates why Jews flocked to the medical profession in Germany and Austria, noting that by 1933, 50 percent of Berlin's and 60 percent of Vienna's physicians were Jewish. He discusses the impact of this on Jewish and German culture, concluding with the fate of Jewish doctors under the Nazis, whose assault on them was designed to eliminate whatever intimacy had been built up between Germans and their Jewish doctors over the centuries.

A multi-cultural view of science.......2000-05-01

Most texts that examine the development of scientific thought either focus exclusively on western culture or footnote achievements by non-western societies at the end of individual chapters. Not so with this work by Colin A Ronan. Ronan integregrates the science of Arabic, Chinese, Western and Indian (to name a few) cultures into a smooth account. Readers are able to logically follow the development of scientific ideas throughout the ages. More importantly, Ronan has cross-referenced important sections within the text so that the reader can quickly find relevant information.

If you are a historian or science, or someone who just has a passion for history, this work is a useful reference guide that also makes for interesting reading. A must have for a reference library.

Emile Durkheim is best known in this country as a great sociologist and methodologist. Yet it was Durkheim's reflections on morality and society that spoke most deeply of his vital concerns. The first two selections of the volume set the context for the development of Durkheim's sociology of morality. Section II, "Sociology and Social Action," shows Durkheim grappling with moral and political issues in his society and indicates the immediate social context of his thinking.

The remaining selections indicate some of the major substantive areas of Durkheim's sociology of morality. Section III, taken from The Division of Labor in Society, demonstrates his basically evolutionary approach to the development of moral norms in society. Section IV, "The Learning of Morality," gives examples of Durkheim's work on socialization. Section V, "Social Creativity," deals with the important question of how new moral norms arise in society.

This book provides a good overview of Durkheim's work, but since it is just excerpts it's hard to get any in depth understanding into any one particular subject. As a reference book, it is practically worthless, as there is no index. So, if you are writing a paper and think, hey, I know Durkheim said this, but I don't know where, it's difficult to figure out. Nevertheless, I suppose it does serve as an adequate introduction to Durkheim.

Bellah has gathered Durkheim's most oft-cited writings (including Elementary Forms, Division of Labor, Suicide, and Sociological Method) and arranged them topically in this work. The book begins with Durkheim's review of French social thought, then chapters on "Sociology and Social Action, The Evolution of Morality, The Learning of Morality," and "Social Creativity." A lengthy introduction gives an overview of Durkheim's biography, other writers who influenced his thinking, as well as summaries of the major works whose selections are within. It's an excellent book for both undergraduate and graduate theory courses: most selections are between 10 and 20 pages.

avoid! run like hell!.......1998-04-07

After finally completing it, I must say this book is a bunch of rubbish. Humphries makes no attempt to hide his partiality toward Roger Waters (the only Floydian he wanted or was able to interview for the book), as is evident in his analysis of the Floyd catalog. But what is really beguiling is during his bash against the Gilmour sanctioned "Shine On" box set, he writes, "The shoddiness extended to the booklet which came with the box, factually inaccurate and so sloppily proof read that the final page came to an abrupt end mid-sentence." For a writer so concerned about accuracy, I ask Mr. Humphries why he thinks Roy Harper queried "which one's Pink?" on WELCOME TO THE MACHINE (p70)? And why is the photograph of "Roger Water's demonic pig atop a speaker stack at the Berlin wall performance" (p107) from an indoor concert whereas Potsdamer Platz is an outdoor plaza? And why is there a Wall across the stage of a "Post-Waters Pink Floyd show (p91)? I don't have the time to continue, and don't waste yours.

Nothing new.......1998-04-04

It is a little painful trying to read this book; it is definitely not a literary achievement. A lot of the paragraphs incoherently flow between unrelated topics with frequent asides. If you have a copy of Miles book, then there is nothing new here, except for a few different pictures. But that's not worth the price of a good PF bootleg! I recommend you get Storm's "Mind over Matter" or wait it out for Nick's soon to be published book.

Pink Floyd has finally been immortalized in the same manner as Prince (or the artist formerly known as Prince, anyway), Elvis Presley, Bob Marley, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and a host of others: as the subject of a CD Book. CD Books are the standard jewel case-sized, shrinkwrapped books that are available in most record stores in the United States (they're usually found in the CD bins with audio discs). Hence, though it contains 120 pages, the pages are only about 5.625" wide and 5" tall.
Though it's a small package, the book includes a reasonably comprehensive history of the band, a chronological summary, and a discography at the end.
The book is filled with pictures, and the pictures alone are worth the roughly US$8 price tag. There are a ton of shots of the band members, showing them at various stages in their career.
The book is published by Carlton Books Limited and as mentioned above, sells for about US$8.

This book is for the casual fan only. A hardcore fan would know just by quickly glancing through it that it contains no remarkable info. It's really only good for quick reference of simple facts and pictures.

A mother and daughter learn to accept each other's differences.......2005-11-21

This narrative is mostly about the relationship between Natalie and her mother, Agi. Natalie comes from an upper middle class mainstream Jewish Australian family. Natalie eschews the comfortable upper middle class secular life that her mother envisions for her to become a baal teshuva, a repentant one. Natalie joins a Hassidic sect

Black is a reference to the clothing Hassidic men wear and the rainbow is the joy Agi eventually finds in being the grandmother of five Hassidic children.

Agi is at times meddlesome and disapproving and at others very helpful,

Mother and daughter eventually come to accept each other's differences.

Recommended for anyone interested in the Bal Teshuvah movement, Hassidism, or any non-religious mother who feels lost or distraught because her son or daughter has joined a fundamentalist religion

Helpful book for parents of children who become bal teshuva. Realistic yet heartwarming and encouraging.
