Product Description
Stories of heroism and adventure encountered by twelve young people escaping Nazism and Communism for the freedom of the U.S.A.
Book Description
The best-known mountaineer in Britain for almost 40 years, Sir Chris Bonington is still the public face of climbing. Through his books, lectures, and TV films, he's become a great ambassador for promoting every ascent in the mountain world. At 65 years old, this self-described "climbaholic's" passion and enthusiasm remain undiminished.
Despite his high profile, Bonington essentially remains a shy, complex man with many human failings. The man high up on the Eiger, Annapurna, and Everest is a leader frequently assailed by self-doubt and often devastated by the deaths of close friends. High Achiever examines Bonington's deepest motives and reveals the joys and occasional despair of living a life at the limits of physical and mental experiences.

The Postal Service Guide to U.S. Stamps: Updated Stamp Values.......2007-01-03
The book is beutifully illustrated and contains up-to-date information on stamp collecting, directly from the source, The U.S. Post Office. It has enhanced my view on collecting.
A Great Book For Someone Getting Back Into the Hobby.......2006-11-17
I collected stamps in the 1970s and 1980s as my grandmother was a big collector and I was fascinated by her stamp books, which were terrific. I had a pretty good collection myself just from her discards. But when she passed away over 20 years ago, I lost interest in the hobby. But recently, I pulled out my old stamp book and got the urge to get it back into shape and to get it current. And the 33rd edition of the US Postal Service's book is a great book to use as a guide to get back in the hobby. First, it shows pictures of almost every stamp ever issued by the USPS over the years in glorious color, so it is a great book just to look at. But I use it to see just how daunting it will be to catch up to collecting almost 25 years of stamps because the USPS has issued considerably more stamps on an annual basis than they did before. I also use it as a guideline as to how much I should pay for stamps on online auctions to make sure I don't overpay by too much. The size of the book makes it easy to use as well.
I've really enjoyed rediscovering this hobby and really think this book has made it even more fun!
Very helpful book.......2005-09-15
If you are looking for a high and low price for an individual US stamp, this is the book for you. It does not price by the condition of the stamp, but the book will give you some idea of the price range a stamp would fall within.
fantastic book!.......2005-06-14
i just thought i'd write in saying what an amazing book this is. i purchacd it a few months back, and even though its from 2003, it combines indivual prices of all stamps, and first day covers. everything is in color and very easy to read and move around in. i find its a bit better then Scott's. as fdc's are included right there on the page.

Customer Reviews:
If you like country/cottage style, you'll like this book........2006-10-06
I like Gloria Nicol a lot. Her taste is cottage/country/vintage style, similar to Lucinda Ganderton or Christina Strutt. Her choice of colors is pretty, simple, and cute (not gaudy). I find her ideas refreshing and inspiring. I love the calico, ticking and floral prints she uses for her pillows, seat cusions, etc. The instructions are easy enough to follow for a beginner sewer like myself. I highly recommend this book.
Was This Really Copyrighted in 2005.......2006-01-17
I checked this book out of the library because I was looking for quick and easy sewing projects for curtains. Imagine my surprise when out of the 10 window treatment projects (I didn't count the tieback), 5 of them took between 6-8 hours. I don't know about you, but I don't consider 8 hours a quick and easy project! LOL.
Several projects stated 3 hours or less, but I wonder if that time is accurate for the average or beginner sewer. There were several pillows, one of which was a round pillow with piping, zipper and a center button (pg 98). I don't know if 3 hours is a realistic time frame for this pillow on the round, especially if you've never done piping.
The reason I chose this title is that almost the entire book seems to be populated with photos of projects that use some VERY outdated looking fabrics (huge florals, ugly calico prints and pom-pom trim). I initially thought this was possibly from the early 90's.
The reason I did give it 3 stars was that the directions were pretty clear and there were a few cute projects where you would not have to envision a different fabric:
-- pleated lampshade w/beaded trim (pg 124)
-- silk panel pillow with braiding (pg 92)
-- above-mentioned circular pillow
I think you can find a book with beautiful projects and simple instructions and just skip this one.
Book Description
Captain Elizabeth Pepperhawk survived Vietnam, but will she survive Fort Bragg? Whoever dressed a body in a World War II uniform and put it in her bed in the Transient Officers Quarters wants to shorten not only her career, but her life. The Army's Criminal Investigation Division identifies the victim as Dermid Hagan. According to Army records, Specialist Hagan died in a traffic accident in Saigon, two years earlier. Pepper becomes friends with her neighbors, Avivah Rosen, a military police captain, and Benny Kirkpatrick, a green beret. They all have problems with the Army. Pepper has a drinking problem acquired in Vietnam. Avivah's repeated requests for a position in Southeast Asia have been turned down because she's female. Benny loves a woman whose husband is missing in action. The three friends band together to help one another survive and to investigate the murder. They soon discover that Womack Army Hospital holds more than one secret . . . When Pepper persists in asking too many questions in the wrong places, she places several people in danger. As the investigation spins out of control, and with Pepper's life at stake, Benny and Avivah must work together to catch a determined, cold-blooded killer who has Pepper in his sights.
Sharon Wildwind, a native of Louisiana, is a former Army nurse. Sharon is now a Certified Gerontological Nurse, working with the elderly. She spends her time orbiting between her computer and quilting table because the colors and patterns help produce the words and vice versa. She also teaches mystery appreciation workshops and, through memoir writing, encourages older women to write the true stories of their lives.

Putting a face on Vietnam's aftermath.......2005-09-12
SOME WELCOME HOME by Sharon Wildwind puts a face on the aftermath of the Vietnam War. Wildwind writes from experience as an army nurse in Vietnam in the early 1970s and a year as head nurse on an orthopedic unit at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where this novel is set. Her experiences and insights give the book authenticity. Nothing seems pasted on. It's the real deal.
Opening line: "Through the slit in the closed drapes, a thin bar of afternoon sunlight fell across the soldier's chest, highlighting the dark, small bullet hole."
Such is Captain Elizabeth "Pepper" Pepperhawk's "welcome" to the Transient Officers' Quarters at Fort Bragg. The body is wearing a World War 2 uniform but his hair is long. She thinks: "Maybe he wasn't a soldier; maybe someone dressed him in a uniform. But there was something about him, even in death, that said 'soldier.' He was one of us ..."
I was reminded of Shakespeare's "band of brothers" as I read. This emotional bond, this shared experience, runs through Wildwind's story. It also drives a key character who keeps applying for combat service, convinced that her request is routinely denied because she's a woman.
The story is told through three main characters. There's army nurse Pepperhawk, who survived Vietnam but is troubled by flashbacks. There's Benny Kirkpatrick, a Green Beret just returned from the Panamanian jungle, who wants to chuck it all, get married and raise a family. There's Captain Avivah Rosen of the military police, who envies their bond and wants to share it.
So who is the dead man on Pepper's bed? We get pieces of the puzzle one at a time. The investigation begins with a World War 2 veteran who reports a stolen uniform, and leads to three lifelong friends who served in Vietnam and swore to look after one another, no matter what.
How many of those now stationed at Fort Bragg could have been in a certain location in Saigon on January 20, 1969? Quite a few, as it turns out. A crime committed then and there has finally come to light a world away.
As Pepper, Benny and Avivah track the clues to a small mountain community, Pepper finds herself drawn into the lives of those who thought they had put Vietnam behind them. Wildwind writes with a sure hand of both the military community and the civilian community, and the arrest of a high-ranking, well-connected officer takes this complex mystery to a suspenseful ending.
SOME WELCOME HOME is the first in a planned five-book series. I enjoyed it from beginning to end, and look forward to the next one.
deep look at 1971 military life inside a terrific mystery.......2005-03-05
Nurse Corps Captain Elizabeth Pepperhawk has returned to the states after a tour of duty in Viet Nam. Her latest assignment is at Fort Bragg where she will head up a wing at Womack Army Hospital. However, her stay in guest quarters is SOME WELCOME HOME when she finds a corpse wearing a World War II uniform inside her room. She calls the MPs who inform the Criminal Investigation Division of a possible homicide. All military law enforcement is jittery as the MacDonald fiasco still lingers here at Bragg. MP Captain Avivah Rosen and CID Captain Delaney arrive with other military police.
The case takes a surprise spin when the victim turns out to be Dermid Hagan, who officially died in Nam two years ago. As Avivah and Elizabeth become friends and neighbors along with a third compatriot Benny Kirkpatrick, each has a personal problem to cope with. Elizabeth begins digging into what happened finding a tenuous link to the hospital; this endangers her, her friends, and others from a trained killer who will murder to keep secrets hidden.
This is a superb historical military police procedural that grips the audience from the moment Elizabeth finds a body in her room and never slows down until the final good-byes. Besides a strong murder mystery, the tale provides insight into the minds of career officers struggling at a time when the Viet Nam War has begun to look helpless with no exit strategy (sound familiar?). The key to the tale is three buddies and the support cast that sheds more light on three protagonists. They provide an insightful look 1971 military life inside a terrific who-done-it.

Book Description
Study after study shows that fathers set up their daughters for success. Involved fathers-whether or not they live in the same house as their daughters-boost their daughters' academic achievement, promote their emotional health, increase their compassion for others, and even bolster the status of women.
In What a Difference a Daddy Makes, renowned psychologist and bestselling author Dr. Kevin Leman seamlessly weaves the latest research on fathering with funny, moving stories about his own parenting experiences. He gives practical ideas and inspiration for fathers and provides specific direction for helping daughters grow into loving, confident, caring adults.
Customer Reviews:
We loved it!.......2007-07-17
I gave this book to my husband as a Father's Day gift, and ended up also reading it myself. Dr. Leman's advice, guidance, and personal stories in "What a Difference a Daddy Makes" really hit home with their accuracy. It forces parents to really think about how they interact with daughters and the long-term effects of a father's relationship with his daughter. Be warned, it is a tear jerker! While reading the book I felt grateful to have a husband who, as I read the book, made me think, "Hey, he does that! Oh, he does that too!" At the same time, there were a few passages that illustrated some things both of us could approach differently with our daughter.
I had two points of dissention with Dr. Leman however. I found his references to daycare as "kiddie kennels" to be offensive and disturbing. It is clear he feels very strongly that mothers should be home with their children. I can understand that, but to resort to slurs against child care, when such high quality care is available and has been shown to actually benefit children, struck me as narrow-minded. Also, Dr. Leman's strong Christian faith influences much of the book. In fact, an entire chapter is devoted to this subject. While it isn't something I disagree with, other readers may have different views. All in all, however, this book is wonderfully written and should be required reading for all daddies!
Life changing.......2007-07-16
After reading this book it made a huge difference in my understanding of my daughter. I am a youth worker and bought it for all the fathers of the girls in our youth group. I have heard nothing but praise for the gift and the book. Dr. Leman is funny, insightful, and impacting in this wonderful book!
Incredible, a must read for any dad.......2007-04-16
What a Difference a Daddy Makes is a great book that stresses how important the role of the father is in the life of his daughter. [...] any books by Kevin Leman before, but once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. Dr. Leman keeps the andecdotes coming fast and furious, and page after page is full of great advice.
After finishing the book yesterday, I know this is a book I'll need to revisit over the years as my three year old daughter gets older. Leman emphasizes that dads (and moms) need to be "good" parents. It's almost impossible to be great parents. We'll all fail at times, but it is important for dads to be their and to be involved. It is also important for dads to model what role a man should play in her life. If a girl has a father with bad traits, she will most likeley seek out the same traits as a husband. Leman also stresses to live out God in everything you do in your life. For example, don't set aside a time for devotions. Istead, constantly look to share the Bible, or talk about God, during day to day activities. Leman also points out that fathers are responsible for teaching their girls about the bad parts of life, about how not everyone is nice and about how there will be failure. This leads into one of Leman's strongest contentions: Men must take the lead in teaching their daughters about sex. That's a section I won't need for awhile, but he definitely knows what he's talking about and I believe has written books on the subject.
The father/daughter relationship is a special one. Leman's book is a must-read and a great resource for all dads out there given the privelege of having a little girl. I've also read "What a Daughter needs from a Dad" by Michael Farris, and it is a great book too, but I'd reccommend Dr. Leman's book over that one if you have to choose which one to buy.
All about perspective..........2007-03-26
You will like this book... and you will want to share it and the knowledge with others.
My wife and I are two true opposites. I enjoy cooking; my wife enjoys cleaning. I would rather cook; she would rather clean. She has six sisters and zero brothers. I have two brothers and zero sisters. What do these characteristics have to do with this book?
Everything.
From both perspectives (my wife's and mine), this is simply a superlative book! I consider myself quite savvy, emotionally attached, and a true believer of self and self-awareness. This book further elucidates the concept that the Daddy-Daughter relationship affects all of us.
Yes... mothers are affected by their respective fathers; but, more importantly, they are affected by their husband's relationship with their daughter(s). Before reading this book, my wife did not fully understand the scope of her father's relationship values (or lack thereof). Moreover, through our reading and sharing the knowledge within this book, my wife has learned to appreciate MY relationship with OUR daughter. She now understands the relative importance of me being "the "go-to" guy. She now understands that there are some things Daddies just know and do.
Much like the Mother's intuition, Daddies have a super sense of balancing teaching/learning; strength/subtlety; faith/hope; patience/expectations... and the significant-yet-natural-to-fathers concept of balancing parental expectations with our daughters' fears.
Dr. Leman covers the entire gambit in this quick read. Indeed, there are many other books available on related topics. However, Dr. Leman's approach is simple without being simplistic. You will like this book.
Overstating the Obvious.......2007-03-21
Extremely average book short on anything considered above and beyond common sense. Nevertheless ... a fairly good guide for the first time father. Definitely written with spiritual connotations that further detracted from its intellectual credibility.
Customer Reviews:
About Time, indeed!.......2000-03-31
It's somewhat surprising, given the tremendous number of jazz biographies published in the last thirty years or so, that is it took so long for a definitive tome about the life of one of the most popular jazz musicians of all time. There are, perhaps, many reasons why this is so. Firstly, Bru has always been a bit hard to categorize; "serious" jazz musicians have been known to eschew his music as too "pop," too hook-oriented; others (this book included) point to his background in classical music as evidence of an artist too singular to sit comfortably aside many of his contemporaries (stylistically, he borders more often on Ravel than, say, Miles Davis). Another reason why perhaps it took so long for this book to appear is that, as compared to many of his contemporaries in the West Coast Jazz scene, Bru's life was relatively tame; he didn't suffer from harrowing addictions, or spend time in prison. Brubeck's life was more that of a working musician and a family man. On the other hand, as this book clearly indicates, his life was anything but ordinary. Brubeck's Columbia recordings, featuring his trademark multiple-meter compositions, probably reached the ears of more Americans than any other jazz musician of his time. His frequent international travel brought him into contact with a wide range of musical styles and idioms, which he incorporated brilliantly into his music. Perhaps best of all, and a major focus of the latter part of this book, Bru raised a family of sons who have continued to build on his legacy, while forging jazz voices of their own. "It's About Time" chronicles the height of Bru's popularity in the 50's and 60's, follows through with his experimental forays into classical music in the 70's, and generally presents a well-rounded portrait of an artist who reflected the optimism of his generation. It features a much-appreciated - and comprehensive - discography of Bru's recordings, and a reasonable amount of analysis of Bru's artistry. If there's anything I'd have liked more of, it would be more discussion of Brubeck's artistic process, and a more in-depth analysis of his compositions. Perhaps that's the next book that needs to be written. I would recommend this book very highly to fans of Dave Brubeck. To those less familiar with his work, I'd say, buy a copy of "Time Out," "Time Further Out," and "Time in Outer Space" first - then, read the book.
