This book is an excellent resource. Ignore sao530 who doesn't mention anything about the book, but only has issues with the fact that everyone else loved the book. With the information here, I saved over $5,000 on my used 2002 BMW 530i.

I don't know, it just seems strange to me that all "reader reviews" of this book give it 5 stars. Doesn't anyone think this book could be improved, even a little bit?? The previous reviews are so spectacular they almost sound like a SALESMAN might have written them ;) Could it be that the author has left all these other reviews of his own book? Naa, that couldn't be, could it?
This $15 book saved me thousands.......2005-11-18
This is the best book of its kind-bar none. Burke gives very simple, easy-to-follow advice. He not only describes the sales techniques being used on you, but describes how to effectively combat them and give yourself the advantage in negotiating. I combined three of his techniques (waiting for a rainy day, showing up at the end of the month, and taking a test drive and bringing the car back just after the dealership closed) to great effect. I got the price I wanted and I didn't have to negotiate hardly at all because the salesmen just wanted to go home. Burke's book may be the best $15 I ever spent.

You can not go wrong with this book. I don't know how many times I have read it. The information in this book is something you won't get anywhere else. It is well worth the money.

No one should buy a car without first reading this book. It's complete and well-organized. It includes formulas, resource lists, samples, scenarios, advice, and every aspect of car buying that you could imagine. And it's an easy read. Read it, study it, write notes on your sleeve, then go to the dealer and buy your car at your price.

In a sense I'm also writing this review for several friends of mine who have bought the book and found it extremely helpful as a prepration for shopping for a car. The information, tactics and strategies proved to be right on for both me and my friends. We all saved money with this book. As to a previous reviewer who said the "fax" ploy doesn't work. Well it sure did for me. I suspect he's a car salesman.
This book saved me [a lot].......2002-12-04
First of all, this book was written by someone who sold cars for a living and you get the "inside" scoop. So inside, that when I went to buy my first new car ever, as the saleman's banter was taken chapter and verse from the pages. I used every resource suggested and every response suggested by the author and, as a result, paid [substantially] less than the lowest price I was offered by groups like AutoFinders. Not a bad return for [such a small investment!]
Don't use this book. It only helps the dealers not you........2002-06-14
If you'll use the advice in this book, like faxing the dealers in your area for a bid on a car. You will get the worst treatment from them that you can imagine. They will be waiting to get even with you. And they will.
The book tells you just enough to think that you'll be in control of the deal, when in fact it leaves out anything that can actualy acomplish that. Like showing them the money - a cashiers check.
This book cost me a ton of agrevation from dealers and waisted a lot of my time.
Don't make the same mistake I did of buying this book.

I have taught many people how to knit and everyone agrees, you cannot learn to knit by looking at diagrams(or from a book), it is just to confusing of a concept if you have no idea how knitting works. Once you know just a little you can use this book to guide you along fine! The pattern on the cover is just adorable once finished! Bottom line, to learn to knit you need someone who knows how to show you the first steps or at least some free online videos of different stitches to guide you - otherwise you will end up with much frustration!
Not bad If you already know how to knit.......2005-01-18
This book is very confusing and I don't recommend it unless you have a buddy there with you who already knows how to knit. There are multiple directions for one drawing and it is unclear, since it is not clearly shown, how one should exactly proceed. Using this book is similar to learning how to knit with only verbal instructions. Though the book is cheap, the beginner knitter is probably better off spending his/her ten dollars on another book with more, clearer drawings. Otherwise it is just as well to get knitting instructions free online since they are equally as obscure as this book. Likewise, there are too many baby projects here. While making tiny sweaters over and over again might be useful for someone with children or grandchildren, if you are looking to make something for yourself, this book is limited in terms of projects.
Great Next Step for "Experience Beginner".......2004-01-03
This was the second knitting book I bought after "Knitting for Dummies" and I'm really enjoying it. Whereas "KFD" was a good jumping-off point for teaching yourself to knit, about halfway through "KFD" I got tired of practice pieces and scarfs and wanted to make SOMETHING. "Knitting for the First Time" incorporates a lot of the same techniques but works you through projects -- potholders, children's cardigans, infant sweaters, etc. -- so you get experience with the basics of shaping, seaming, etc. ONE CAUTION: I have found a pretty serious error in one of the patterns and cannot find an "errata" page on the company's web site -- this means if you dive into this one, you'll have to be a good-enough knitter to graph, visualize, or count the next step before you take it or you will find yourself with a problem. So far, the problem seems to be limited to patterns where more than one size is given and the parenthetical stitch counts for other sizes is missing from some steps. This is the only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars; it is otherwise fun to work through, beautifully laid out and photographed, and a great next step if you're on your way out of the beginner stage. This book is a must read for interior designers and architects. It contains a lot of valueble information and images about some of the greatest restaurants recently designed. From casual to high end, the most beautiful restaurants are included. I am currently designing a restaurant in NY, and the book has been very helpful in giving me ideas on how to manage space while maintaining a high level of class.

It's clear from reading this memoir by folksinger and social activist Richie Havens that this is one '60s survivor who hasn't become jaded. They Can't Hide Us Anymore (the title comes from a remark Havens made when he opened the Woodstock festival) traces Havens's journey from Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant district (where his musical skills aided him in staving off unwanted gang attention) to Greenwich Village at the cusp of the early-'60s folk boom. There, the positive-thinking artist/gadfly/aspiring entertainer crossed paths with everyone from Bob Dylan to Wilt Chamberlain. Then it was on to Woodstock and international (if fairly fleeting) fame. As befits an unapologetic counterculture adherent, Havens's memoir/life guide doesn't adhere to a tight structure. One minute he's offering a hasty guitar lesson, the next he's making passing reference to an encounter with the ghost of Aaron Burr at New York's Cafe Bizarre. He devotes as many words to unknown pals who've made a positive impression on him as he does to encounters with the Beatles and Elvis Presley. Some may find the fanciful flow of Havens's narrative disconcerting, but it's clearly the way the man has lived his life. Leafing through and then reading this book at length, I had to laugh. One particularly amusing and typical account was of RH's finding symbolic significance in an ancient Israeli fort's similarity to Close Encounters of the Third Kind's movie set. Man I get high just thinking about it. I just want to unread history, numb my powers of critical thinking, and go live in a patchouli-scented yurt when this otherwise amazing, astounding musician dumbs us down this way. Ah, to be like a child again: self-centered, uneducated (as the other reviewer put it) and able to lovingly turn the pages of this book without ever aging and having to learn from experience. The sad fact is that by extolling the virtues of childlikeness in this book, Mr. Havens censors the brain itself.
Heavenly Havens.......2000-11-06
Thirty years after he appeared as the opening act at Woodstock, folksinger Richie Havens now takes the stage as an author. He insists this book isn't a memoir but an account of the "humorous, talented and incompetent people who occupy the entertainment industry."
Havens's tales of the people he met in New York City during the 1960s -- Bob Dylan, James Earl Jones (who also contributes a generous foreword), Joan Baez, Lou Gossett Jr. and others -- are full of nostalgic appeal. Such grace notes from Havens the historian, however, get overwhelmed by his penchant for pontificating -- on the environment, drug use, child-rearing, world peace, you name it. He grows wearisome fast. Warning: Havens takes astrology very seriously. He dismisses his absentmindedness as "an Aquarian trait" and describes a former business manager as a "very nervous type. He also was a Capricorn." As for John Lennon, the ex-Beatle "had a strong premonition that something was going to happen to him," reports Havens. "I know I did."
All of which raises one more question: Does Havens, a talented, likable musical performer, have any premonitions about his future in publishing? All in all an interesting glimpse into a life of contradictions and fun.
Self-centered and Uneducated.......1999-11-29
I am a 17-year old senior who had to pick an autobiography to read for my AP English class. I'd heard Mr. Havens' music before and thought that this would be an interesting read. Not having grown up in the Woodstock generation, maybe I cannot fully appreciate all that Richie Havens tried to portray, but I feel I am a relatively open-minded person.
I felt that he (Havens) came across as incredibly self-centered and self-promoting. Maybe it's just me, but I feel that an autobiography should be less about one's accomplishments, which anyone can find out with a little research, but more about what makes someone the way they are. Havens talked a lot about all the wonderful things that he has done, which is fine, but it was all done in a self rightious tone.
Whenever he would begin to touch on his influencees or idols, it came across in a name-dropper sort of way. You know the type of people-- the ones that have to brag about who all they know. I think his meetings with the likes of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, etc. were supposed to come across as humble and interesting, but I didn't get that impression at all.
I think that this could have been an incredibly interesting book. He is an amazing performer and has plenty of experiences and knowledge to share, but it could have been done in a more accessible and less narrative sort of way. But, what do I know? I'm just one of those rebellious members of Generation X.
A Man Well Beyond His Music.......1999-09-25
If you have ever seen Richie perform, then you will feel that you are a part of this book. It draws you in like you are sitting next to him and he is telling you stories of the likes of Dylan and Hendrix. This book is an extension of Havens and shows you a side of him beyond his melodic guitar and ballads. I have spent many hours both listening to his performances and talking with him in his dressing rooms and at many Woodstock anniversaries. I thought I knew him well until I purchased his book. It showed me the real Havens, and what a great man he truly is. I urge you to sit down and read it from cover to cover and then read it again !
A soothing book written from the heart.......1999-09-23
This book reveals the inner thoughts of Richie Haven's genius. The stories behind his story, with credits to those individuals who helped shape the true music of the 60's and 70's, are wonderful. One finds that the kindness expressed in Richie Haven's music and wishes for a better world, are those which really exist in his mind and spirit. Eastland's book makes the case that the Independend Counsel Statute is not only expensive, impractical and unconstitutional, but that it also relieves the President and Congress of their accountability and responsibility to act in accordance with ethical politics. The "ethics of politics," which are the traditional (pre-1978) mechanisms for prosecuting executive 'malfeasance,' were enough to get rid of Nixon and should be all that we need to address the problem.

The entries include individuals who have served as investigators; those who have been targets of investigations; all attorney generals who have called for appointment of special prosecutors; all presidents during whose terms of office such prosecutors served; and all legal cases that served to argue for or against the constitutionality of the independent counsel statute. These historical precedents are traced from Ulysses Grant's appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate the St. Louis Whiskey Scandal in 1875. More contemporary cases include Watergate, precipitated by Richard Nixon's "Saturday Night Massacre" dismissal of Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox in 1973; Independent Counsel Lawrence Walsh's Iran-Contra Investigation; and Special Prosecutor Ken Starr's Whitewater investigation of the Clintons and the ensuing permutations which brought individuals like Linda Tripp and Monica Lewinsky to prominence and also brought the statute calling for such investigations into constitutional debate. The book is fully cross-referenced and contains a comprehensive bibliography and index. It will be of interest to scholars and students of American History and Constitutional History.

Too Many Details Make for a BORING Read.......2005-06-26
First off, this book is well researched and a good read until you get to the "World Leader" part of the book. Even though that is the part that talks about the Cuban Missile Crisis, it is sketched out beforehand. By the time I got to the "World Leader" part of the book, I felt like it was a chore to read; something that had to be done! I highly recomend Robert Dallek's "An Unfinished Life" instead of this one because Dallek's book flows at a much faster pace and is easily the best JFK book out there!
Very good coverage of Cuba.......2004-11-21
Sorensen's account deals briefly with Kennedy's background, and then dives deeper into his campaign and years in office. I used the book as research for a paper on the Bay of Pigs and found that Sorensen's analysis is concise yet thorough. His reliance on Kennedy's speeches and on the progression of the drafts (many that he wrote or co-wrote) provides a very interesting picture of the incident and the man that I couldn't find elsewhere.

Camelot, A Time We All Miss.......2004-10-15
After watching the three Presidential debates between Kerry and Bush, its interesting to go back and read this book by Ted Sorensen, a valuable aide and friend of President Kennedy. To be able to compare the world we now live in as represented by President Bush and JFK wannabe John kerry, and the way the world used to be in the time of the real JFK is remarkable. Maybe there was a secret agreement between politicians and the media on reporting events and styles, but it seems that todays world of immediate desire for news and analysis compared to President Kennedys administration of realism and understanding goes a long way to explain why politicians today are viewed in a lesser light. After President Kennedys death, we were faced with Vietnam, Watergate, malaise, an actor in the White House, Bush, an intern in the White House, 9/11, Iraq and Bush. Like that famous politician Yogi Berra once said, "Its Deja Vu All Over Again".

Although Sorenson's book might have taken a beating since Camelot's golden days, it remains an invaluable classic for those interested in Presidential biographies. Sorenson doccuments what he felt made Kennedy a leader....and what ultimately impacted us when he was assasinated.
