This is an excellent guide for those wanting to visit places associated with the events of the American Revolution. It is divided into sections by state with a brief overview of the state. Each state is divided into sub-sections by city/town/village (depending on the size of the site). Under each sub-section is an overview of the area's history and the role it played in the revolution, plus a comprehensive listing of colonial era houses, museums, monuments, battle fields, etc. Each listing includes a description and some history (for the most important ones), plus contact information, hours of operation, etc. Most of the town/city sections have a listing of historic eateries and lodgings.
We have used this book throughout this summer, and we have had one of the best vacations ever! We were thrilled to find many Revolutionary War sites throughout our state which we did not know about. We even visited some Dutch Colonial houses in the heart of New York City! We had no idea that such things could survive in New York. It was truly amazing to see these houses, and that alone would have made it worthwile to purchase this book. We recommend that anyone wanting to visit any of the sites listed, calls ahead to confirm the hours, etc. We run into several places that were being restored and were closed to the public. Not a fun thing to find out, after traveling any length of time to get there. Also, as some of these sites are quite small and run by very small staff, their hours of operation can be by appointment, again good reason to call ahead.

Launching Pad for Craftstman-style Interior Design.......2002-06-05

The best candidates for this book are those who have purchased or are planning to purchase a Craftsman-style home; however, that should not exclude those who just want to replicate the style in their decor. Although there are many style characteristics of the Arts & Crafts era that are easily identified, this book sheds light on a wide spectrum of pieces with literal authenticity.

While not a complete collection (items such as light switch coverplates and heating register covers are not included) these reproductions of Stickley's catalogs are the perfect foundation for those looking to purchase Craftsman-style interior accents.

If you desire to maintain as much as possible the look of the Arts & Crafts movement in your interior design, this book should definitely be a staple in your library.

The photography is the old original work, and while it's not up to today's standards it is nice. There are prices for each piece, which is amusing, seeing a $12 price for a table.

There are measurements for most of the pieces, which is not surprising as the furniture was sold via catalog. There are no plans, this is from a catalog to sell furniture, not plans. But, between the pictures and the measurements you can develop your own plans.

There is also some history and text pages from Stickley's catalog/magazine.

Beany and the Dreaded Wedding is about Beany's cousin, Amy, having a wedding with Peter, her boyfriend. Amy wanted Beany to be the flowergirl and the bearer. Beany sort of wanted to go and sort of not, because she was scared of everybody staring at her in the wedding party. She wanted to go because she thought it would be exciting. When the wedding was finished, she was not scared any more. The wedding ended up to be a fine and peaceful wedding. I like this book so much. I would like to recommended it to all of my friends, my family and best of all, all my best teachers, counting all of them. A nice normal kid........2003-12-21

Beany is a nice normal kid. She's not as loud as Ramona Quimby but she's just as earnest and concerned about the world around her. If you're asking a young girl to be in your wedding, I highly recommend this as a good primer on the ups and downs of being a flower girl. I especially like the adults in this book, who are warm and caring and make you feel like Beany is going to grow up to be a great person.

I loved Beany and the Dreaded Wedding! Children will relate to Beany's worries when she is asked to be a flower girl in her cousin's wedding - will the dress be ugly and frilly, will she trip going down the aisle? The author is always sensitive in handling Beany's worries. Beany's "know it all" friend Carol Ann is always close at hand to "help" Beany solve her problems. The contrast between Beany and Carol Ann adds just the right tension which is so common in childhood friendships. Beany is delightful! The book is sprinkled with humor which will appeal to kids and adults alike. Throughout the story, the reader can sense that Beany will work out her concerns and a happy ending is right around the corner.

Children ages 8-10 will love Beany and will be eager to read more of her stories!

Unlike some recent volumes on Brahms, which have served mainly to bring together miscellaneous papers read at conferences, this collection seeks to locate the composer more directly in the context of his personal, professional, and musical environment.

The volume consists of three parts. In Part I essays by six prominent scholars explore different aspects of Brahms's relationship to his world. The topics include time, memory, and concert life in Brahms's Vienna (Leon Botstein); Brahms's complex personality, studied by a leading psychoanalyst (Peter Ostwald, M.D.); Brahms and Clara Schumann (Nancy B. Reich); Brahms and the New German School (David Brodbeck); Brahms's pianos (George S. Bozarth and Stephen H. Brady); and Brahmsian influences on his contemporaries (Walter Frisch).

Part II presents commentary on Brahms's music culled from some of the most important critics of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Most of this material has never appeared in English before. Included are excerpts from the earliest published survey of Brahms's works, written in 1862 by Adolf Schubring; reviews by the powerful Viennese critic Eduard Hanslick; analyses of the symphonies by Hermann Kretschmar; and an analysis of Joseph Joachim's Hungarian Concerto by Donald F. Tovey.

Part III offers substantial portions from memoirs about Brahms written by contemporaries who in themselves were leading musical figures. These excerpts, most translated into English for the first time, are taken from Hanslick and from the composers Alexander Zemlinsky, Karl Weigl, and Gustav Jenner, the latter being Brahms's only private pupil in composition.

An appendix provides a list of all known musical works dedicated to Brahms.

Brahms and His World should prove a valuable reader or source book for anyone interested in the composer.

An interesting and excellent collection of essays. I personally found the articles written by Brahms' contemporaries to be the most illuminating. While some of the chapters are quite technical musically, there is much that is of great interest to the layperson.
