A must have book!.......2001-05-13

While travelling in SA for 4 motnhs I found this book amazingly helpfull. It had the best advices on how to save money, it had the best maps...I acctually knew more than the buss drivers sometimes and ended up advising them...hostels recommandations were great too. I have been looking into other guides to SA and found this one to be the absolute best.

The Blind leading the Blind.......2001-04-27

This must be one of the worst researched books ever written. IT IS OUT OF DATE! Too many places mentioned have closed down 3 years or more before printing. An unacceptably high number of telephone numbers are wrong. Advice given is quite out of date - this can be costly in Africa! This guide is badly rated by just about anyone that have used it. Of an estimated 600 or more pax that i have met that have used this ancient "bible" about 5% said it was OK, the rest hated it. I cannot recall 1 person saying that they have found it useful. I would seriously recommend that anyone contemplating buying this online first compare this with other travel books available. Pick a couple of things that interests you and compare the different guide books. Not Recommended at all.

Atrocious - worst book in the series.......2000-07-23

This book is an absolute dud and rates/deserves zero stars. Not only is just about all the information 3 years old, but this pathetic attemp misinforms travellers about everything especially safety. It would seem that this is just a reprint spiced up with one or two new details. I've been in tourism in SA 8 years and was astounded while reading sections. Places gets recommended you wouldn't see me dead in like an all night Steers fast food place in Durban centre for example - a definite/guaranteed redistribution of wealth waiting to happen. Then in Jo'burg 4 hostels mentioned after each other have all been closed for 3 years or more. I wouldn't even have picked up on that but the traveller who had the book tried them when arriving and he wasted about half an hour. He said he was also going to dump the book after i brought him up to speed on the Durban section. To Jon Murrays' defense (though i haven't met him) i don't think he is the guilty party. To my knowledge he hasn't even been in SA since 1996. But Jeff Williams has - a whole 3 weeks since 1996 of which he apparently spend 5 days in Swaziland. His political views on SA is well known in the industry here as is his alcoholism and his unprofessionalism. Although he has been tolerated up to now he will not be in future - not after this publication.

After reading this disappointing book I've decided to vacation elsewhere. If I should return to Australia I will not bother with another Lonely Planet "guide" like I threw out after only two days the last time I was there.

Car Accompanies Book.......2001-01-19

The best thing about this new line of books from Matchbox and the Pleasant Company is that the vehicle featured in the story is included with the book. We have four of the eight and intend to get the other four. This story features a tow truck that rescues a car after it skids on the ice and gets "crunched". My son loves "reading" the books and using the vehicle to act out the stories.

We have four and this is my son's favorite because it comes with a light green Volkswagon Beetle (his favorite type of car). My son enjoys "reading" the book to himself and acting out the story. Nice series of books........2007-02-09

Each book in this series combines a Matchbox car (ambulance, etc.) with a short story. It's a great way to share a love of reading and a child's love of Matchbox cars. The story is short and, I think, encourages the child to imagine while they're playing with the vehicle. It also gives the child an experience of what people do for a living - picking up trash, driving an ambulance, etc.

This board book provides a nice "hands-on" learning opportunity. Kids love cars (and other vehicles) and having a story about one of their toys keeps their interest. A great series if you want more than just a toy!

The story-line follows the demolishon of an old building and the reasons for it plus the new construciton.

In 1998 Périphériques edited the book "36 propositions for a home". The projects resulted from an international competition to design lowpriced single-family houses. The publication was a great success and has been out of print for some time. In the meantime, some of the competition entries have been built and in this new book, the realization of these and similar houses which were designed in the same spirit, has been documented. Low in cost and commissioned by ordinary people, these buildings are nevertheless striking examples of contemporary residential forms, where creative use is made of prefabricated materials, buildings and surroundings are integrated in a highly individual way, and the feeling of spaciousness is emphasized in the designs. Mitropoulos's career, method of working, extraordinarymusicianship are described in detail. Also described is his sweetnessand naiveté. Aside from some special pleading when he bashes other conductors in defense of Mitropoulos, Trotter does a fine job of pulling together the research of Oliver Daniel who died before he could write the biography.

Wonderful biography of a forgotten giant.......1999-05-27

I stumbled on the name Dimitri Mitropoulos quite by accident, as one never hears him mentioned much in the same way Karajan, Bernstein, and others are. Neither have I heard any of his recordings. This book helped me delve into this great man's life - what a singular purpose of mind he had - total dedication to his craft. William Trotter succeeds in giving us not just the details of his life (which, by themselves, are not exactly mundane), but also in bringing the reader the imagery, the depth of feeling of Mitropoulos' work. One can feel and see him conducting in his full glory. Having had this marvellous biography brought to me, I am now eagerly buying whatever recordings conducted by Mitropoulos that I can find. I agree with the other reader who commented - a discography would be most welcome.

A superb biography of a great musician.......1997-11-06

At the time of Dimitri Mitropoulos' death in 1960, he was regarded as one of the greatest conductors of the century. His spellbinding performances in Minneapolis and with the New York Philharmonic were legendary. Then he handed (or was forced to hand over) the baton to Leonard Bernstein, Mitropoulos turned to opera. Virtually all of those performances are legendary. Even when let down by poor casts (such as a Met broadcast of DIE WALKURE) his conducting leaves the listener breathless. Yet the irony is that with a decade of his death, he was virtually forgotten. William Trotter's well-written, well-paced biography reminds us of Mitropoulos' great musicianship and encouraged me, for one, to pull the maestro's recordings off the shelf and become reacquainted. My only quibble is the lack of a discography. Maybe Amadeus will remedy that in future editions or maybe they'll give us a separate volume (as with their excellent Bjoerling discography). Highly recommended to all music lovers.
