THE BOOK DOES NOT HELP COLLECTORS OF CZECH BOHEMIAN IRIDESCENT INKWELLS. FIRST, THERE ARE ONLY 8 EXAMPLES IN THE BOOK. THE PHOTOGRAPHS ARE TOO DARK AND DO NOT CAPTURE THE BEAUTY OR TEXTURE OF THE GLASS. BUT WORSE, THE INFORMATION IS WRONG. INKWELLS CLEARLY MARKED WITH THE GERMAN PATENT MARK, D.R.G.M. ARE LABELED 'AMERICAN." IN ONE INSTANCE, TWO INKWELLS MADE OF THE SAME GLASS ARE CALLED RESPECTIVELY 'AMERICAN" AND "EUROPEAN." THE AUSTRIAN MARK OE.P COMES OUT "DEP." AT LEAST THEY ARE CALLED "LOETZ-TYPE," WHICH IS ACCURATE, SINCE NONE OF WAS MADE BY LOETZ. A GOOD BARGAIN BOOK TO LOOK AT PICTURES, BUT DEFINITELY NOT FOR THE ESPECIALIST.

This is Badders' second volume of magnificent color plates of inkwells. This one contains 757 photos, some of which are alternate views of the same inkwell. Those who have Volume one are probably not even bothering to read this review. They ordered this companion book immediately and are at this moment drooling over the beautiful inkstands, looking for those that are similar to the ones in their collection.

Badders' book is a pure delight for the collector of inkstands and ink bottles. It has 502 colored plates which will have the collector/reader drooling and upon discovering a match for one in his collection feeling that superb sense of satisfaction only a true inkwell lover can understand.

Badders has included inkwells of many varied compositions, and unlike the very few other books on the subject, has included the range of value of each item.

Waste of money...
This book is good only for school projects and absolutely not useful for artists, restorers or woodworkers.
Very amateur...Featuring stone age techniques, which can only discourage the follower.
Don't give any choice of supplies, don't warn about possible mistakes an failures during the process and do not say how to avoid or fix those mistakes.
Anyway... Following this book amateur will only get frustrated:
Spend a fortune for supplies and sabotage there treasures...
Professionals or semi-professionals - simply don't need it...
Businesses which selling supplies and gold leaf offer a seminars and comprehensive guides "how to" for gold leafing. Much more useful...

an illuminators dream.......2007-04-23

As a practicing medieval illuminator and historical bookbinder, I can recommend wholeheartedly Ms. Grafe's fantastic book on gilding. The book is well written and contains many valuable illustrations to accompany somewhat complicated procedures. I especially appreciate the easy to follow, clear, detailed steps for the gesso gilding process which is very time consuming (but worth every minute) and its success depends on many factors which can be a challenge to someone just starting. She gives the tips and pointers that only an experienced gilder could pass on to help with the environmental influences and other things which can stifle success. It is an excellent resource material for anyone who is fascinated in book arts but especially useful for someone who wants to improve and perfect their technique in gilding paper and parchment.

A Classic Book on a Classic Subject.......2007-03-22

If you have an interest in this art-form then you want to do it the way it has been done for hundreds of years. This little book shows you the way of the masters down through the centuries. To recreate the beauty that has been held timeless in illuminated manuscripts, thus adding to it's number, is a fine thing thing to accomplish in a lifetime.

One of the best books on gilding I've read!.......1998-07-01

Secreta is easy to understand, well organized, and has a lot of excellent drawings and photographs of the steps involved in gilding. It also has some historical background on how gilding was used, as well as a nice little section on using the paint pigments that would have accompanied the gilding on medieval manuscripts. One of the few how-to books that I've read cover to cover, and have recommended to my friends who already do gilding or are interested in learning.

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a borderless world, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "tradebinding, sample mounting, and book or paper bronzing, die-cutting, edging, embossing, folding, gilding, gluing, indexing, and other postpress services" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.

Immanently useful..........2002-11-12

As someone who's hobby is re/creating illuminated manuscripts, I found this book to be a great help in getting me past the hurdle of attempting to do gilding on some of my own work. Ms. Whitley's no-nonsense approach, step-by-step instructions, examples and photographs of her gilding her own pieces helped me overcome my nervousness in dealing with gold leaf.

This book is a must for anyone wanting to 'leap the hurdle' and utilize gold leaf in their own manuscript illuminations. This book goes onto my 'working reference' shelf...it's not going to be collecting dust for quite some time.

We bought this book and the other Mark Twain Tales (The Buffalo Climbed A Tree, A Fable, The Ant, and The Blue Jay Yarn) to introduce our children to Mark Twain before their Tom Sawyer years. They love them. They are abridged books, but they retain Mark Twain's own words and his essence. Each is a different color and each is very, very interesting. Mark would have been proud and happy that children are able to "read" his stories. Buy these very inexpensive books for your children today. They will love them and read them over and over again. At the price, they can even draw in the noncolored in spaces. Trust me on this--Mark Twain Tales are great

A Titan to Remember.......2006-03-08

I had the pleasure of working with the players and coaches from that '71 Titans team while they were guests at the 2006 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, celebrating the 35th anniversary of that championship season. It was truly an honor to meet and spend time with all of them and to see the bonds and friendships that still exist after 35 years. I can only imagine what life was like during those difficult times, but I do know it had to take men of exceptional character and strength to pull them together and lead them thru it all.

Having met Coach "Doc" Hines, and now having read this book and getting a glimpse of the life behind the man, you can see how big a part of that team's success he was, both on and off the field, as well as shaping the lives of so many of his students with his "mind over matter" attitude. His daughter Paula has done a great job in capturing the spirit of the message her Dad brought to his players & students. A great read!!

Inspirational Reading.......2006-02-03

I wasn't expecting much from the plain book cover, but was surprised by the content. Written simply, Lonergan captures the essence of the man and his mind over matter attitude. Some subjects just don't need much enhancing. Very inspirational!

Golden "Blonde".......2005-02-24

Before Gwen Stefani, Madonna and Courtney Love, the original and premier rock blonde of the world was Deborah Harry. So it's a given that she would be adored as an icon of rock, punk and pop music -- but does Cathay Che have to adore her quite so much?

"Platinum Blonde" is a useful, interesting look at the life and work of Debbie Harry -- adopted at three months into the New Jersey Harry family, Debbie later went on to the legendary Max's Kansas City, and then to become the frontwoman of the hit punk band called Blondie. (Contrary to legend, SHE is not Blondie herself) Later, when the band broke up, Debbie embarked on a solid solo career as a singer and actress.

Biographies are always a lot better when the subject goes along with it, or even helps. Debbie Harry did both, and that means that the details are plentiful and the background is as well-researched as it possibly can be. In addition, Che has some very exclusive interviews with Harry and her bandmate Chris Stein. These interviews are intelligent, insightful, and give a great deal of insight into Harry, her career, and her band, and are without a doubt the best part of the book.

What is more, the book has a great deal of other input on Harry and Co., most of which add to the overall "feel" of the book. (Except for one mildly icky story about a photographer getting a naughty glimpse in one of his photos). And Che has a great deal of enthusiasm for her subject, and the impact Blondie and Harry had on the world.

The main problem is Che's rosy lenses -- it's understandable that a fan would get a bit adoring of Harry, especially after interviewing her in person for this. However, it gets a bit tiresome to be told repeatedly what a great band Blondie was, and what a flawlessly amazing human being Debbie Harry is, and so on and so forth. I adore Harry too, yet not quite that much.

However, Che's excellent research and solid writing make up somewhat for the gushy tone; most die-hard fans can't write anywhere near this well. "Platinum Blonde" has one major flaw, but is otherwise an excellent biography of one of rock's first ladies.

Complimentary portrait of Deborah Harry.......2003-08-31

Cathy Che's book traces Harry's life from her birth in New Jersey to her becoming drummer and vocalist in the psychedelic group Wind In The Willows, singing with the Stilettoes, to Blondie, and beyond. However, she divides the book thematically, such as Harry as a movie actress, Harry's influence on music after Blondie's departure from the music scene, as an icon for gays, and on fashion. All this leads up to the Blondie reunion, which yielded the No Exit album and the accompanying tour.

The coverage of the CBGB's scene and the onset of Blondiemania is done well, and certain movie roles, i.e. Videodrome, Heavy, and Hairspray, have added detail, as they were starring roles for her.

The key content of the book are the series of interviews with Deborah Harry and the one with Chris Stein. Che does reveal at the outset that Harry despises idiotic questions like "how does it feel to be a sex symbol?" And that good manners and intelligent questions are a prerequisite to have a successful and interesting interview with her. Her answers are honest, open, with a twist of humour every now and then. However, what struck me was her belief that her accomplishments wasn't worth a full book. Even Chris Stein thinks Harry doesn't realize the influence she has had on pop culture, which is bringing the "movie starlet sensibility into rock."

What's important to emphasize, as Che does is that Blondie is all five members of the group, i.e. Harry, Stein, Clem Burke, Jimmie Destri, Gary Valentine, and as may have been apparent, Blondie became solely equated with Deborah Harry, an inaccuracy on one hand, but that's something that Chris Leeds, Blondie's manager from 77-79, fervently argues, that the men were "backing up this particularly beautiful woman." Leeds is portrayed as a controlling force and someone who had what it took to push Blondie in the spotlight, and he isn't portrayed too flatteringly here, perhaps justifiably so, as a clause in the exit contract gave him 20% royalties.

Another way to put it was 'Blondie' as Harry's onstage persona, a 70's Jean Harlow or Marilyn Monroe. As Harry said, "The initial idea was to be desirable, feminine, and vulnerable, but a resilient, tenacious wit at the same time." "For this reason, technically Deborah Harry both is and isn't Blondie." I can go for that.

The brief commentary by those influenced by her include Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo, Fred Schneider of the B-52's, whose new track "Debbie" on their Future Generation greatest hits is a nod to Ms. harry, Michael Stipe of REM, and Theo Kogan of the Lunachicks is quite rewarding to read. And Che also mentions Madonna, whose fiery independent, self-assured image was surely taken from Deborah Harry.

There is a series of photographs, including Andy Warhol's wonderful silk-screen portrait, a very interesting surreal painting by Robert Williams, and the usual bunch of photos.

Warm, accessible, and generous is how Che portrays Harry in this book, but Evelyn McDonnell's final words in the foreword sums things up pretty well: "When Blondie died Harry was able to go on living."

This is a poorly written book (chock full of typos and inaccuracies) that doesn't do justice to the very interesting subject of Harry's life. It's nice that someone aimed to write her biography, but if you're looking for something definitive, you'll have to keep waiting.

Despite the fact that Che had access to Harry and Chris Stein, she came up with no new revelations, and doesn't even tell the story of Harry's life; she simply focuses on Harry's sex appeal and stardom, and doesn't even delve into that too critically. Pass on this one.

I love Deborah Harry. She is a genuinely interesting artist. The author relies too heavily on Deborah's own book Making Tracks. I could have saved my money and just reread Making Tracks.

...okay fans and friends, not to make this review section a (contest) let's just say I have seen Debbie perform at least 30 times since '78 in all forms, with Blondie, Jazz passengers, to recorded track solo gigs, with Tiger Bomb, to guest vocals with the Ramones. Good insight from a qualified fan-observer.......2004-05-06

Cathay Che is obviously, first and foremost, a Blondie-and more specifically a Deborah Harry-fan who is also a New York scene writer of some accomplishment. She tells the Debbie Harry story about as well as anyone other than Deb herself could. I think it presents an accurate picture of an individual far more influential and musically significant than most people in America, including Deb herself, realize.

Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, and Pete Townshend have all publicly talked about Debbie and a paragraph from any of them would have been invaluable, as would commentary from, say, cinematographer Sam Shaw (who was still alive then and in NYC) or any of the other 'old schoolers' Harry interacted with in the '70s and '80s at the tail end of their careers.

Che's book is the best Deborah Harry volume so far.......2004-05-10

My disappointments with Che are few: she gives superfans and scenesters a great deal of space, rather than engaging individuals who really should be regarded as Harry's peers and colleagues. Che appears to have made no effort to have spoken with, say, Madonna, or Deb's 'Heavy' costar (and former MM roommate) Shelley Winters. (Che's assertion, in the book's first chapter, of the feelings "all men" have for the original blond bombshell is also mildly offensive to me.)

Fans of Blondie and Debbie Harry will no doubt enjoy this book, although it doesn't probe very deeply or reveal many new facets to the Blondie story. Cathay Che's literary voice is a bit too gaga for its subject for my taste. She oversells it a bit in other words, which makes it feel like fan magazine stuff and not really a biography for adults. Still, it's Debbie and Blondie, so even a poorly written book is better than none! Sadly however, the photo sections are very skimpy for a band whose appeal was so visual. What the market really needs now is something along the lines of "Bowie: An Illustrated Record", a coffee table book on Blondie that is mostly images by different photographers. Are you listening, Taschen?

For nearly half a century, until his death in October 1948, Judah Magnes occupied a singular place in Jewish public life. He won fame early as a preacher and communal leader, but abandoned these pursuits at the height of his influence for the roles of political dissenter and moral gadfly. During World War I he became an outspoken pacifist and supporter of radical causes. Settling permanently in Palestine in 1922, he was a founder and the first president of the Hebrew University.

Increasingly, he viewed rapprochement with the Arabs as the practical and moral test of Zionism, and the formation of a bi-national state of Arabs and Jews became his chief political goal. His life interests thus focused on the core issues that confronted and still confront the Jewish people: group survival in democratic America, the direction and character of the return to Zion, and the reconciliation of universal ideals with Jewish aspirations and needs.

Dissenter in Zion draws upon a rich corpus of private letters, personal journals, and diaries to offer a moving account of an eloquent and sensitive person grappling with the great questions of the day and of an activist striving to translate private moral feelings into public deeds through politics and diplomacy. We see Magnes disagreeing with Brandeis over the leadership and direction of American Zionism and with Weizmann and Ben-Gurion over ways to achieve peaceful relations with the Arabs; defending himself against charges by Einstein that he was mismanaging the affairs of the Hebrew University; and persistently negotiating with Arab leaders, trying to reach a compromise on the eve of the establishment of the State of Israel.

Dissenter in Zion also contains a biographical essay on Magnes by Arthur Goren, assessing his ideas and motives and placing him in the context of his times. It shows Magnes's profundity without covering up his weaknesses, his lifelong tactic for courting repeated defeat in favor of long-term goals that could not come to pass in his lifetime.
