Great Book, But............2000-07-29

Great book if you are doing a reef study and need to identify the correct names for all the creaters. Great photo's and helpful hints on purchasing equipment, but for the average weekend or resort snorkeller it can get boring to read. However, the book is worth having.

A valuable acquisition for the South Pacific diver.......1998-07-25

Before my recent dive trip to Fiji I looked for a good fish ID book for the area (one with photos, not paintings) and came up short. It doesn't seem like anyone has done a comprehensive reference for this area comparable to Humann's works on the Caribbean.

However, I did find Paddy Ryan's fine volume in the lending library at the resort where I was staying. To my surprise, I find it to be much more than the typical, superficial "snorkeler's guide." It's a small but beautifully produced volume with excellent photography and a well-written text. It's a good balance of photos to help identify the most common South Pacific reef fish combined with informative text on the behavior and biology of reef fish, other vertebrates, and invertebrates.

I didn't buy a copy when I had a chance in a local shop, and I regretted it on the long flight home. I'm buying my personal copy as soon as I finish writing this. Take my word for it, for snorkelers, novice divers! , or serious divers, this is money well spent!

This pictorial and descriptive reference is a great size to tuck in my purse. Because I was expecting a more elaborate book, I gave the paper back 3 stars.

Pieces of Fine Work.......2004-05-26

This book thoroughly documents quilting and quilt makers from across the USA. Roland Freeman tells the story of the quilt makers largely through his spectacular photographs. He includes unknown but highly talented artists as well as celebrities who also quilt. The photographs are accompanied with stories from the artists, and these narratives provide a terrific base for understanding why this folk art retains its vibrancy in the 21st century. In many ways, Freeman's photography and writing can also be understood as part of the artistic fabric that he stitches together.

One of the best.......2002-09-24

I really enjoyed this book. You meet famous and not so famous people in this book. Some you will never forget like Hystercine Rankin, who made a quilt of her fathers killing in Mississippi, when she was only ten.She eventually won a $5000 prize for it. Or how the author talks about his family and the "healing quilt" and his lifelong affinity of quilts. The stories in here are good, and the quilts are out of this world. One of the best oral African American history books out there.

Influenced by his love of quilts, photographer Roland Freeman acts as anthrolopologist and quilting historian in this beautiful, comprehensive book. Featuring full color photos of African-American quilts and quilters and well-researched text, this book is a must-read even for non-quilting enthusiasts. The history and cultural heritage of a people have been preserved in this beautiful artform. I found myself moved after reading this book. You will be too.

AWESOME! Breathtakingly beautiful quilts and warm stories.......2001-07-19

This book is truly awesome. Although I have almost every quiltmaking book in print, the photos here are of the most unique and breathtakingly beautiful I've ever seen. And the accompanying stories about the quiltmakers are at once inspirational and humbling ... e.g., a quilt depicting the lynching of a woman's father, and explanation of how neighbors were afraid to attend the funeral. (Don't let that discourage you; most of the quilts are uplifting and gorgeous by any standards -- and the few sad ones are incredibly moving and meaningful.)

I can't imagine anyone not loving this book. Frankly, I was so awed by the gifted artists whose work is contained therein that my first thought was that African Americans have all the talent and creativity (and, no, I'm not an African American). Even if you're not moved by the stories/bios (although I can't imagine not being), you've *GOT* to be awed and inspired by the extraordinarily beautiful and truly unique quilting, which cannot help but enable you to improve your own designs.

I wish that there were more stars than 5 ... This book deserves the highest rating imaginable.

Book Description

Divisible by 2 documents an architectural experiment by John Whiteman that articulates the preoccupations and concerns of the current generation of architectural and cultural theorists and practitioners. It investigates questions of embodiment, signification, visual perception and physical experience developed in a square pavilion that was erected in Austria as part of the Geburt einer Haupstadt (Birth of a Capital) exhibition. Integrating the text with images and drawings of the building, Divisible by 2 reveals the project's philosophical concerns and explains the design processes. John Hejduk's commentary establishes a dialogue with the project, acting as a critical counterpoint to text and images.

More specifically, Divisible by 2 explores the cross-relationships between building, image, and word. Partly inspired by Jacques Lacan's depiction of a figure of two doors, one marked for men, the other for women, in his writings on the "agency of the letter in the unconscious," Whiteman's pavilion marks the architecture of human and sexual difference. John Whiteman is the Director of the Chicago Institute for Architecture and Urbanism.

Highly recommend.......2007-10-03

This book was recommended to me over a year ago when I lost my daughter. It has taken me that long to get around to ordering it, I wish I had of much earlier. Fantastic book.

A good resource for grieving family members and friends........2007-03-11

After the stillbirth of our first and only child, we bought or were given a raft of books relating to infant death and stillbirth. Of these, Empty Cradle is probably the best known.

I found it comprehensive and extremely focused on affirming the emotional journey of the parents. For me, it was perhaps a little bit too affirming. I found that in the end I preferred the more matter of fact tone in a book like A Silent Sorrow than the more emotional point of view in Empty Cradle. Still, it is one of the better books on the topic, and would be particularly valuable to people who are really struggling with what emotions they should be feeling at a time of loss.

I also really appreciated the comprehensive and categorized bibliography that Davis included with the book.

This book has lots of good info in it. I read it following the passing of my 24 week olddaughter back in 2005.

solace in knowing you're not alone. or crazy........2007-01-06

i wish this book never needed to be written, and never needed to be read. but as tragic as it may be, babies do die, and parents do need to learn to live with it. if you are expecting any answers, you are looking in the wrong place. and if you do find the right place, please let me know. as far as i have learned, there are no answers. there is only an endless pain that we try to alleviate by sharing with each other, so that we do not feel too alone in this. and that's exactly what this book does. it helps you feel less alone. the garbled thoughts and feelings, the phantom pains and sounds, the guilt and the anger, the endless loss and the irrational fears. the fear that you are going insane. sadly, it is shared by all, and can thus be termed as "normal". whatever that is.

Reommended Resource for Grieving Grandparents.......2007-01-03

Davis gently offers information surrounding the concerns Mothers and Fathers have about the loss of their baby. Most importantly Davis gives accurate use of the term Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and the differences between this medical mystery and other infant deaths. It is a great resource for parents of adult children and grandparents because it gives insight into what the parents are going through, as well as it explains how to tell children about death. Grandparents will also learn how to support their children through the grief process, knowing we all go down this path of grief together, yet it is a uniquely personal journey.
