Great Photographs, Great Guide.......2002-03-09

This guide gives very specific directions to the many attractions, and I am impressed by the quantity of entries. My only problem is that so much of the book covers the Northern areas of MN, WI, and MI (e.g., upper p). All very beautiful and definitely the best of the best of the area, but I would enjoy seeing some more convenient locales.

A good overview.......2005-08-07

I'm no avid garage saler or flea marketer, but I picked this book up from the library to see what some of my stuff might be worth.

The author first gives some tips on how to buy and sell goods, what to look for condition-wise, and how to learn more about a certain type of goods. Then the book lists types of collectibles in alphabetical order, giving a short history of the company or collectible, with values of some of the more valuable examples of each type listed.

Of course, such a book can't be completely comprehensive, but this one does give lots of resources (both books and individuals) for further study in each type of collectible. It seemed very heavy on pottery and dinnerware companies, but did have a good mix of other items (toys, Coca-Cola items, political buttons...). It's not really the type of book you should browse through from front to back, as I did, because it's just so overwhelming! But I did learn a little that probably stuck with me.

The word nerd in me had to smile at all the misspellings and bad grammar throughout the book, but it's a minor point.

If you're into the collectible scene, but just starting out, this would be a good starting point for you.

A Technical Overview in Plain Language.......2001-12-31

This is an excellent book for the history of style, proportions, and ergonomics. It is especially useful for the cabinetmaker who is custom designing furniture. The golden section (golden rectangle) is covered in the most precise detail I have ever seen. The tables and charts are extremely helpful in the design stage of any project. If you design furniture, you'll definitely want this book in your library.

An excellent book which has earned a spot over my drawing table. Superbly covers form/function, visualization, standardized (ergo) vs. personalized design, and construction principles. Covers drawing, drafting and CAD well. Includes a brief history of furniture.

The math is suited for the drawing table rather than the shop, as you should expect for a design book. The hows and whys of design principles are explored, some not as conclusively as I'd like.

The book is well illustrated with many relavent line drawings, charts, and graphs. It is nicely laid out, easy to read, and pleasing to look at.

Le moine benedictin et architecte Hans van der Laan (1904-1991) a ecrit ce deuxieme livre dans son abbaye de Vaals aux Pays-Bas (pres d'Aix-La-Chapelle) pour exprimer sa vision pleinement aboutie de la conception en architecture en particulier, et en arts plastiques en general.

Son premier livre, le Nombre Plastique, basé sur le calcul des proportions, se retrouve plus concentre dans celui-ci, tel un outil devenu une incontestable decouverte de la pensee humaine.

La methode decrite s'inspire en partie des travaux de l'architecte romain Vitruve. Elle concerne donc tout d'abord l'architecture, mais elle s'adapte complementairement d'une part en plus grand, a l'architecture paysagere et a l'urbanisme, et d'autre part en plus petit, a la conception du mobilier, de tous types d'objets, et egalement a la creation de vêtements.

L'objectif de cette methode (qui demande un temps d'apprentissage), s'il n'est pas clairement exprime (par pudeur ?), consiste a mon sens, a faire passer l'amour divin dans tout ce que le concepteur concoit. Une fois la maison construite, nous ressentons - si nous y sommes sensibles - l'amour universel et inconditionnel comme lorsque nous nous trouvons dans une cathedrale ou au coeur de la foret.

A valuable late-summer festival at Bard College in upstate New York, devoted each year to a different composer, has produced several noteworthy collections of papers. This volume on Strauss appeared just before the 1992 festival. When the book was first published, Timothy L. Jackson's thoughts on the Four Last Songs got the most attention. Jackson argues, quite persuasively, that the four songs were originally five, with the orchestral song "Ruhe, meine Seele!" to be heard before "Im Abendrot." His analysis extends all the way to details of orchestration, but the best proof is in the hearing. Several recordings (such as Jessye Norman's with Kurt Masur) allow listeners to program the songs in this order, and the sequence is revelatory.

Elsewhere, Leon Botstein contributes the "keynote address," taking up the odd disjunction of the composer's life versus his music. He demolishes the idea of Strauss having stylistic shifts. (Botstein, as president of Bard College, is known to consider Elektra one of the essential texts for a liberal-arts education.) Michael Steinberg takes on Strauss's behavior during the Nazi era. Like Kirsten Flagstad, Karl Boehm, and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Strauss will always be linked to his politics. James Hepokoski offers a look at Macbeth, Strauss's first tone poem. In general, the lesser-known works such as Intermezzo and the Burleske for piano and orchestra come up more than you would expect, with correspondingly less on Don Juan or Ariadne auf Naxos. Two chapters offer selections from the composer's correspondence, nicely translated by Susan Gillespie. The most interesting is that with Josef Gregor, the librettist for Daphne. The essays are quite fine individually; taken together they offer nothing less than a wholesale reevaluation of the composer. Focusing on the "middle period" after Elektra, editor Gilliam asks for a separation of style from historical era, and it is the key to a much deeper understanding of the music. --William R. Braun

A Good Read.......2002-09-05

Hale's imagination of the consequences of time travel is the centerpole of this novel. The multiple variations of memory suffered by protagonist Peter Abbot are well illustrated and bring a real sense of his mental turmoil about the actual sequence of events in his life. At times, you get the sense that Hale is trying to write poetry instead of telling a tale as he wanders into bizarre phrases and metaphors, but despite these forays into semi-verse, the book has a quick pace and never drags. Overall, an interesting plot built on the always popular time-travel idea. I highly recommend it.

A great read for Time Travel/Star Trek Fans.......2002-03-31

This thriller is about a group of psychics assembled together on St. Martin in the Caribbean by a venture backed company for the purpose of enhancing and then exploring the pyschics' abilities for remote viewing of past and present events - e.g. JFK's assassination. The most talented psychic, Simon Hayward, discovers early on that not only can he do remote viewing but that he can materialize in the past and alter history -his first act delivers Charles Manson into historical obscurity. Hiding this materialization ability from his employers, the increasingly paranoiac Hayward decides to "delete" his fellow psychics through either historical murder or simply "coitus interruptus."

Hale has done a great job playing with how the universe resolves the paradox of reconciling "known" and "new" pasts as Hayward's interferences combine together to have an exponentially increasing effect on history. If you're a time travel or Star Trek fan, I'm almost certain that you'll enjoy this one - and the satisfying ending which rings true - no fake ruses here that leave you feeling cheated at the end.

An excellent, contemplate time travel/psychic thriller.......1999-12-30

It's odd that this little gem hasn't received more attention, or that I'm the first one to review it, considering that it's more than a year old.

As the published reviews indicate, this is a novel about a group of psychics who work for an organization that uses their talents to assist law enforcement groups or search and rescue missions. One of the psychics is able to go back in time and affect events: for example, he convinces one of Charles Manson's cult members to leave the cult, which changes the past because that cult member originally killed actress Sharon Tate. Tate now (from our standpoint) ends up in a number of B-movies. Only the psychic remembers the world in which Tate dies. The psychic, who is a bit of a psychotic and paranoid to boot, starts eliminating his fellow psychics by preventing their conceptions. The race is then to stop him before he can wipe them all out.

This is a literary thriller. Hale is not particularly interested in developing the commercial side of the psychics' talents; thus, very little of the novel is devoted to the missions. Rather, he focuses on two aspects of the psychic talent: (1) what would it be like to have such a power?; and (2) what happens if you change the past?

The psychics are not a group of people who are enamored with their talent. For some, it's a curse that they can pick up so much of other people's miseries through a casual touch. None of them, prior to being recruited by the organization, has found the talent to be particularly useful. (One uses her power to select lottery tickets that pay $5, $10, or $20, but that's it.)

The second focus is clearly what Hale found fun to write. As the psycho psychic starts popping back in time and messing with the past, McDonald's becomes spelled MacDonald's, the Watergate scandal never occurred, and stock market tanks, and "some dork" is in the White House. The psycho remembers both versions of the past: the original one, and the one incorporating his changes.

As thrillers go, this is not a fast-moving or especially chilling novel. It is, however, an involving book with a satisfying resolution. As time travel novels go, this is far more satisfying than, say, Crichton's "Timeline," in that much more thought went into the time travel paradoxes here.

[The time travel aspect here was also featured in an episode of "The Outer Limits," where a scientist who discovered the power to time travel took it upon herself to kill murderers before they committed their murders.]
