The Size of the World.......2007-09-12

It has been a pleasure to revisit the travels of Marco Polo. I was transfixed by these stories of travel and adventure when I was a child, and never questioned the veracity of the narrative. I know today that the narrative has been corrupted over the centuries, that "The Travels" can scarcely be used as an historical reference, and that a more tantalizing and complete manuscript has probably been lost to the ages. Still, there are glimpses and insights within the narrative that could only have come from first-hand experience, and these describe an enormous, exotic world that titillates even today, while readers in the 13th and 14th centuries must have been enthralled.

I was most keen this time around to Polo's descriptions of the cultures and wildlife he encountered, of the whales and lions and leopards and bears--he even describes a white bear, and the people who hunted it were surely of the group often called Eskimos. He describes dog-sledding in the far north and the cannibalistic practices of the people of Java far to the south, both of which are extant in our current era. There are also the fascinating observations of the Mongol Empire, of that group of nomadic people who somehow rose up, like an event in an Isaac Asimov novel, to conquer much of the known world.

Somewhat depressingly, though, are Polo's observations of the tensions that existed between the Islamic and Christian worlds, tensions rooted in the competition for hegemony over trade in the Far East. Seven hundred years later, these tensions are still acting themselves out.

This translation by Ronald Latham from 1958 includes an introduction that puts Marco Polo's life in context with events and includes footnotes to help the reader make sense of the myriad manuscripts that make up the travels of Marco Polo. This is a somewhat dry read; even Latham comments on the paucity of skill employed by Polo's chronicler. Once I put my mind in context with the narrative, however, I was able to roll with the repetition and sycophancy and enjoy the text.

Dry, but interesting.......2007-07-27

Imagine a very boring person went through something fascinating. This person came up to you, started to talk about this incredible journey of theirs, but talking in this monotonous voice without changing pitch or showing excitement at any moment.

That's essentially what "Travels of Marco Polo" is. It's an INCREDIBLY interesting book and a fascinating tale, but can it possible be said in a more dry and flat way? There is no energetic spark that makes this adventure jump off the page. Perhaps this is due to the times, but I suspect the translation is a bit literal and bland as well. The writing never changes tone, even in parts that are clearly exciting and amazing. All the facts are there, but the reader is forced to put too much energy just to make it interesting.

Marco Polo had a most fascinating journey. Any history buff should snatch this book off the shelves (unless they decide to read the even longer, more annoying records that I'm sure can be found floating around), and anyone interesting in Marco Polo should as well. It may be dull at times, but it's still incredible, fascinating, and a riveting tale.

Recommended to heavier, more able readers.

straight & plain narration .......2007-07-26

This is just a straight & plain narration on what Marco Polo came across. At times it's quite boring. But I mean no disrespect for Polo as he would still be a remarkable explorer & adventurer even today, not to say in the 13th century where transportation was in primitive modes. Contrasting Polo's map & the modern one is interesting though, as well as guessing the modern places corresponding to Polo's description.

In the late 13th century, three Venetian merchants, two brothers and the son of one of them, visited China, which was then ruled by the Mongols. The Mongols distrusted the native Chinese and hired foreigners such as the young man as minor officials. The Venetian merchant-turned-official traveled extensively through North and South China, South-East Asia and India. After he returned to Venice, he took part in a war between Venice and Genoa, was taken prisoner, and in prison met a professional writer who wrote a book based on his memoirs and embellished it with the stock devices of late medieval romances. Among various Asiatic curiosities Messer Polo describes asbestos, coal, tigers, musk deer, sago and coconuts. He tells the story of the Buddha, describes the Mongol postal system (I was surprised that yamb, which is obviously the root of the Russian word yamshchik, a postal courier, is a Mongol word), Chinese paper money and the life of Indian yogis. For him, the Shinto "idols" of Japan are offensive for a Christian to read about, but the virginity test administered to prospective daughters-in-law in South China isn't. Marco Polo is no Jonathan Spence; he is not trying to get the reader inside the heads of people belonging to an alien culture; he is a merchant, and cares much more about the crops that grow in a certain kingdom or a region, and the crafts its inhabitants practice. Anyway, it is an enjoyable read if you liked Herodotus or the Russian Primary Chronicle. When I read it on the bus, the white man in the seat to the left of me was reading a textbook of Mandarin, and the white man to the right was practicing his Kanji - we are all Marco Polos now.

Rediscover the wonder.......2006-12-12

There is so little a reviewer could say about a classic that has not already been said. But, whether your interest is in travel literature, ancient history, military history, or anthropology, this book will excite and inspire you. The writing is conversational, witty, and addicting. Though the author repeats some stories, each telling seems to bring out nuances and connections that would have been missed otherwise and each telling takes you deeper into the Asian frontiers and its people. A fascinating traveller's story that never grows old. Must have for any serious student of history especially with regard to the Asian steppes and the empire of the great Khan. Rediscover the wonder of the travels for yourself, not second-hand but from the traveller himself.

Coro is one of the most widely available costume jewelers in the U.S. If you like their jewelry, then this book is indispensible for dating and verifying the validity of your piece.

Coro lacks enough pictures to fill the pages!!!.......2006-08-20

I buy and sell vintage jewelry mostly on e-Bay at Kaospf. I know how much Coro jewelry is out there so I was very disappointed that this book only has 3 pictures per page. I like to have as many books as I can afford so I can learn and price my pieces corectly.The pictures are scattered and they have a value for that piece but nothing in depth to take up the whole page. They should have loaded up the pages with the pictures of the more comon pieces available on the market.The pictures in the book are more high ticket items.It is nice to see items you don't see often so don't get me wrong. This is why I was not thrilled with the book,too much wasted space and lack of history on the pages. There is history at the front of the book,but it should be on the pages or the area your looking at.Bottom line is if I had looked at the book I wouldn't have bought it.I hope the next book will be better.

A Big Disappointment.......2005-01-17

If you're more interested in the company's history than the jewelry they produced, then you will not be disappointed in this book. However, if you're wanting to see the best of Coro and find a way to determine the value of a Coro piece (or what you should pay for it), this book fails to satisfy that criteria.

First of all, the book is poorly assembled. Corocraft ends up near the back of the book after Francois and Vendome. The selection is poor; 9 pages of $10 - $20 earrings, 40 pgs. of Vendome and only 13 pages of Corocraft and Coro Sterling each. The key Collectible Coro pieces are hard to find in this book and when you find them, the photos are poor, the prices not consistent with the marketplace (some high some low) and some of the best aren't in the book (yet easily found on the internet). You never know which section of Coro you are viewing as every page in the book has the same header. The descriptions don't define which designer produced which piece and with Coro, the designer affects the value.

Ms. Brown needs a lesson in photography or someone should buy her a new camera. The colors are washed out, there are far too numerous blurry images and most importantly, the jewelry just does not show well.

Bought a copy for each of my adult children.......2007-07-18

After giving each of our four adult children copies, I've now got comments back from them. They said they appreciated the many suggestions to help them save more as well as the simple calculations to know how much to save for retirement and when to start Social Security. A son-in-law said it was very easy to read--more like a novel than a financial book. A daughter said it was very good from a woman's perspective. Another daughter advised a neighbor to a copy as well.

A must have for Successful Retirement Planning.......2007-07-11

This Financial non-fiction reads like a novel. An easy read that is extremely informative and useful for planning and executing your retirement. Readers will benefit by the many thousands of man hours or research and analysis that have gone into providing this resource. The many different types of investment are reviewed and the real world effects on growth by inflation, taxes and fees are illustrated. The book also provides much relevant information about all the relevant topics surrounding retirement planning, such as IRAs, tax strategies, Social Security, pensions etc. Chapter 2 titled "Be Aware of the Environment" is very eye opening and relevant in today's world. This book is very easy to use as a resource and provides many clear Appendixes designed to allow the reader to make some simple calculations to either check the present status of planning or to run simulations based on changes or differences in assumptions. Entertaining as well as informative.

Friendly Charts, Tables, and Graphs .......2007-06-05

As a visual learner, I thought the book contained very useful, informative charts, tables, graphs and easy to digest chunks of info in well labeled boxes. Sitting at a lunch table at work, we all talk about our futures, and this book is a great base for our thinking and planning-- even as our lives evolve and the thinking and planning changes. This book is divided into logical chunks so information is easy to find for a non-accountant mind like mine :) Thank you for making this resource available. Linda Underhill

Mr. Hebeler did it again.................2007-06-04

Mr. Hebeler has dedicated his retirement years to helping others. He is also enjoying those years. He has found that happy medium and he wants to share his sucess with others so they too may enjoy the later years.

He is someone who has walked the walk and talked the talk. He has made it so that we can understand how to make our money work for us. He has enabled us to take charge of our money and not rely on someone else. Which in this day and age, it is so important to be aware ourselves, where and what our money is doing for us. The best one of many that I have read........1999-10-01

Dr. Shirley's advice is realistic, practical, and useful. She covers a lot of ground, gives specific advice for different ages, different circumstances. She's ready to tell the truth, which for most of us is that we need to live less expensively, save money, and face facts about finances. I can't recommend this book highly enough. Others I have read are more general, repetitive, and don't give solid reasons for their advice. Dr. Shirley explains her advice, and, unique in this kind of book, names names.

This book if fine if you have had the time and opportunity to put money aside for retirement.

It does not even touch upon those of us who are married for the second time, are basically just starting out all over again with nothing in the bank and no retirement packages at work and who are paying astronomical amounts in child support and will be until we are a hair away from retirement. How are we supposed to amass any money when the "ex" gets it all?

WE are the people who need the help. WE are the people who will be living on a very "fixed" income while the ex-wife will be living in security using the child support money for her retirement.

I'm totally disgusted.

The neat thing about this book is that it gives examples of normal people and how they managed to come up with the money to invest. It's hard to think about investing when you've got kids in school and elderly parents, but I really learned a lot.

GREAT content - awful grammar.......2005-07-09

This book, by Eric Julius, is full of good, solid information on how to live a financially healthy life. Unfortunately, it is also full of typos, grammatical errors and misspellings. If you can get past all of that, this is DEFINITELY worth your while to purchase and read.

The information is basic, and is good for those of you who are confused about taking care of your money and your future. Almost all the information is current and up to date, with the exception of Tax Break When You Sell at 55 (pg. 138) which IS NO LONGER TRUE - the tax break for selling a house is $250,000 of profit for a single person, or $500,000 per couple, provided it has been your primary residence for at least 2 out of the last 5 years. You make take this credit as many times as you wish - it is NOT a one time only deal!!!

Other than that, I found no factual errors. Fantastic snippets of info to whet your appetite to study further. (Note to author: If you'd like a free Editor on your next edition, please contact me, and I'd be more than happy to help you with it - great work on the content!!).

The most amazing part to me--I didn't really start till I was 62 and facing a bleek future with no pension, no savings!

Reading this book showed clearly how the author's formula of Courage, Creativity, Persistence, and Desire can be applied to achieve almost anything. Ollie Adelman shares stories of how he learned the lessons and how he applied them, with fascinating results.

My husband will be buying copies to distribute to his sales staff.

Personalities about whom the author shares stories include Lynn Waldorf, the nearly legendary coach of Northwestern University Football in the late 1930's, Architects Frank Lloyd Wright and Edward Durell Stone, President Gerald Ford, Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, Father Hessberg of Notre Dame, Artist Marc Chagall, designer Ralph Lauren, and many more.

The book is easily readable and fast-paced, laced with humor and humility. I loved it.
