What a great find!.......2006-09-11

When I moved to NJ I joined a newcomers' club and offered to help run a Daytrips group. This book(including its various future editions)was our constant companion and ever ready reference. It also worked for the many house guests that suddenly appeared now that we lived near NYC. We had a great time visiting many of the sites Barbara had previewed for us...and her observations were right on. Note: She does advise that you check dates and time as these change.

When I moved to GA I brought it with me and I often lend it to friends and friends of friends planning to visit NYC or "The Garden State". They are always delighted and wonder why we don't have such a resource for GA.

Still the best!.......2003-11-18

The 9th edition (which is being shown on the screen right now as of November 17), is still the best guidebook to NJ around. Published in 2000, it is more up-to-date than many others, and still shows plenty of personal opinions as well as the basic facts. Available mostly thru "used-like new" option on Amazon because the publisher is out of stock of new copies, but has plenty of books that were a tiny-bit bent when shipped in cartons or shipped back from stores that went out of business.

This is not the latest edition.......2003-10-23

Although the 8th edition is a great book, it was published in 1998. The most recent edition available at this time (10/2003) is the 9th edition published in 2000. It's ASIN number is 0960776281. That is about the only way to get to it since Amazon.com refuses to put up the 9th edition first on the page although I have asked them to many times. You can buy "used-like new" that are actually new, unread copies that have come back from bookstores as returns, or had slightly dented covers are were never sent out. Thanks a lot, Barbara Hudgins

Those of you looking for the latest edition of New Jersey Day Trips may be having a hard time, thanks to Amazon's crazy automatic system. They presently have an older edition on the top line, with no indication of what edition it is. If you want to buy a "used, like new" copy of the 9th edition, type in the ASIN number in the little rectangular box on the amazon front page. That will take you to the correct 9th edition. The number is 0960776281. The 9th edition was published in 2000 and is the most recent. The 10th edition will not be out until spring, 2004.

very helpful..........2002-09-24

I recently visited a friend/colleague in New Brunswick and we took some excursions to whatever the "nuclear waste" state was supposed to offer. Actually, they had grass and trees and gorgeous parks that we visited over a long weekend. This book was in the front seat and I learned as much about this wonderful part of America from reading along the way as actually seeing it!

Beautiful patterns, but ...........2007-02-13

The patterns presented in this book are beautiful. Excellent variety of any kind of stitch you would want to do. My issue with the book, however, is that the charts for the more complicated patterns were almost impossible to follow. I found them small, not clearly defined and difficult to figure out what they wanted me to do. Had they perhaps given a written direction to the patterns it may have have helped. The more simple patterns are OK, but if you want to use the more complex ones, it will not be fun!

I agree, the patterns are beautiful. But I am used to cross stitch charts - trying to follow a knitting chart is totally different - and confusing!

You also have to keep going back and forth between the chart and the symbol explanations in the front of the book. Not my idea of a fun knitting evening!

A great place to learn stitches.......2004-10-12

This is a very good book to learn cables and many stitches. There are mostly cables in this book, and I find that this book is one of the good stitch books out there.

Five stars aren't enough.......2004-05-04

I took up knitting only 5 months ago, over the Christmas holidays. I snagged this book used and it has been a godsend. The charts, although they took getting used to at first were very helpful. I have now used this book to make an afghan and several scarves. I would HIGHLY recommend it.

Among the best I've seen.......2004-04-07

I just got this book a few days ago and I have really been enjoying it! I've swatched several patterns from the different sections and been very pleased.

The book is organized well; I like having the 'picture index' in the front for quick reference. The charts are clear and easy to read. Most patterns will require just one or two repeats to familiarize yourself with any unusual symbols used in the chart. There are a few patterns (the simpler knit and purl patterns) which appear with both charted and written instructions, so that you can get some additional practice beyond the examples in the introduction. Raw beginners might have some trouble, e.g. conceptualizing that a dot indicates a purl stitch on the right side of the work and a knit stitch on the wrong side; but if you have a decent grasp of the fundamentals and a good knitting reference book to help you with unfamiliar techniques, you're set.

There are quite a few patterns in this book which I absolutely adore and can't wait to design projects to use them in. Many of the cable patterns in particular are intriguing - different and fresh without being wacky. But I'm partial to cables, so maybe there's a little bias showing through....

The only thing that's lacking in this book is commentary on the different stitches' history, recommended applications, caveats etc., which is part of what makes Barbara Walker's Treasuries so enthralling. Even with that lack, though, I have to give it full marks as an inspiring knitting stitch library.

Human sidelight on Shostakovich.......2007-01-04

Limited as it is in scope and ambition, the book brings out the eminently humman side of Shostakovich through correspondence dealing essentially with matter-of-fact everyday matters. Glikman seems to have worshipped Shostakovich, who evidently valued his friendship highly.
A pleasing volume with interesting photos and ample notes to fill in the background, it will be appreciated in particular by aficionados.

An engaging journey through 30+ years.......2002-06-21

Shostakovich's letters to Glikman show the personal side of the composer -- a man of humor, wit, intelligence, and an overall powerful mind. While keeping in mind his highly negative attitudes towards the Soviet government, the reader sees clearly Shostakovich's use of codified language, forms of reverse psychology, irony, parody, all of which he uses to keep the offical government censors off his (and Glikman's) back, and yet to deliver his true message, idea, opinion in a singularly and brilliantly effective way.
My only reservation about the book is the one-sidedness of it. Glikman's letters, or simply more extensive commentary (although it is remarkably thorough, and an outstanding job for an old man 30 years later!). Shostakovich destroyed all the letters he received, so remedying this problem, alas, is virtually impossible.
Highly, highly recommended despite this.

But, it is an excellent resource for people trying to make sense of this complex subject. If you are a CPA or other advisor (like me!) trying to help a client, this is an excellent "library" book. If you are John Q. Public, looking for a place to start, this one might be a tough read, but will be well worth the effort.

Accurate but technical.......2000-03-17

This book is constructed in a way that is very similar to IRS and tax law documents. It does contain accurate and specific information about IRAs, but is not user-friendly. It is difficult to understand (not written for a lay-person) and constructed in an outline type format that is difficult to manuever. If you are looking for a book to help you with IRA withdrawal information, this one is not it.

Great book for anyone interested in WWII........2007-06-24

This is an excellent book and is illustrated with a few photos and also drawings done by another member of the US military.

Chuck Holsinger arrived in the Philippines in 1945 as a G.I. in the fight to retake the Philippines from the Japanese. As he learned of the atrocities of the Japanese, he developed a hatred for the enemy. He gives vivid accounts of battles he fought in, and helps a non military person understand the stress of battle and the fears that our military experienced. He also tells stories of how Filipinos assisted the US Military with valuable intelligence gathering and in other ways. He includes how his personal faith in God supported him in the stress of battle.

After the war, Chuck and his wife returned to the Philippines as missionaries. He found that he still hated the Japanese, until God enabled him to forgive them. He was given opportunities to share this message of forgiveness with Filipino Christians which helped set them free from their own hatred and bitterness toward the enemy.

The lessons he shares many be helpful to individuals who struggle with hatred and bitterness toward those who have wronged them.

Postwar Tokyo????.......2007-07-09

I purchased this book because "Sketches of Postwar Tokyo" was of interest. I was very disappointed because my idea of "Postwar Tokyo" is Tokyo shortly after the war. If I wrote a book "Sketches of Postwar U.S.", it would be the United States from 1945 until 1950. It's quite a stretch to talk about Japan 50 years later and call it postwar! The book also contained some inaccuracies. I lived in Japan for 13 years and therefore know something about the country.

Provactive, Beautiful, and my Thesis Topic.......2001-11-15

This fragmented narrative draws connections between the personal and political narratives of individuals and nations. It is by far one of the best books I've read.
