In preparing for a four-week trip to Costa Rica I bought three travel guides: Moon Handbook, Lonely Planet and Footprint. Of these, I found Footprint to be the least useful and did not bring it along to Costa Rica. Unlike the other two guides, I found its descriptions of places to stay, eat, and visit to be too brief to get much of a sense of what the places were really like.

This books presents twenty of the most wellknown historic buildings in Virginia. As always in Rizzoli's books the pictures of exteriors and interiors are beautifully taken and gives a clear understanding of the buildings. The print and paper are of excellent quality.

Enjoyable book.......2006-05-07

This is an incredibly beautiful guide to some of our historic treasures that are open to the public. I am just beginning my career in real estate, and made this purchase because I am very interested in historical homes. I can see this being a valuable reference tool. So it is great for anyone interested in the architecture of these mansions. I also purchased it because I do love visiting historic homes when on vacation. This is the perfect tool for anyone who is looking for a chance to get inside these grand ladies. Anyone who enjoys the grand opulence and architecture of a bygone era will most defiantly want to add this to their book collection.

Pretty good, but..........2001-11-15

They say that nothing is ever as good as the original, and this book is no exception. Still, this is an excellent book and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a guide to America's architectural heritage. This book was originally two volumes released sometime in the '60s. It has been condensed into one volume for this reprint, at the expense of some very informative articles, great pictures and in some cases, the houses themselves. They have added addresses and websites, however, which sort of makes up for the scrapped articles and pics (which can be found on many of the websites).

Excellent - everyone should read.......2005-09-13

I found out about this book in my sociology class. My teacher gave us a xeroxed chapter to read about how every man for himself. It is so true.. Our society is very "wild" and we need to pay attention to what Mr. Derber has to say. This is from the man in the street up to the corporate, and even to the country's executive level that controls our laws. I am also reading Derber's book "In pursuit of Attention". His books are easy to read and offer much insight to what our society has become. The main point of his book is.. we need to pay attention, discover who we really are, and learn how to survive in a world that really does not play by our own rules. And understand, we need to do something about the animals that manifest our society. Read it yourself.. you will be enlightened as to what really is happening...

Good coverage of the holocaust for eighth grade and up.......2003-05-06

Good account of holocaust experience without being too graphic for younger readers. We used this in an eighth grade classroom for a language arts project. The kids were a little bogged down in the section after Marian emigrates to the U.S. They could better relate to the account of his experiences as a youth. A solid account for adults, as well.

An Angel On His Shoulder.......2002-06-11

This is a well-written book, the main interest of which lies in its unemotional and almost off-handed anecdotal details. While the author, naturally, focuses on the events of his and his family's life, a succession of incredible details leave an invaluable impression of life in pre-war Warsaw, in death camps, post-war Germany, and 1950s America. The subject, Marian Filar, is a classical concert pianist and I found especially moving his description of devotedly studying under the great German pianist Walter Gieseking in the American Zone of Germany immediately after the World War Two. Anyone interested in a straight-forward, unself-conscious memoir of displacement will appreciate this book.

Unlike his worldly predecessor Shmuel HaNagid, the first important poet of the period, Ibn Gabirol was a reclusive, mystically inclined figure whose modern-sounding medieval poems range from sublime descriptions of the heavenly spheres to poisonous jabs at court life and its pretenders. His verse, which demonstrates complete mastery of the classicizing avant-garde poetics of the day, grafted an Arabic aesthetic onto a biblical vocabulary and Jewish setting, taking Hebrew poetry to a level of metaphysical sophistication and devotional power it has not achieved since.

Solomon Ibn Gabirol (ca. 1021-ca. 1070) was the greatest of the Spanish Jewish poets and an important neoplatonist philosopher. Translated into Arabic and then Latin in the mid-twelfth century, his work became influential among the scholastics, who were unaware that "Avicebron" (as his name was Latinized) was a Jew and a celebrated writer of religious hymns. The Royal Crown ("A Crown for the King" in Slavitt's translation) is the greatest of Gabirol's poems. Bernard Lewis has called it "one of the major works of Hebrew literature since the completion of the New Testament." Its theme is the problem of the human predicament: the frailty of man and his proclivity to sin, in tension with a benign providence that has to leave room for the operation of man's free will and also make available to him the means of penitence. The "Royal Crown" is still printed in prayerbooks of the Sephardic rite for the Day of Atonement, and among North African Jewish commnities (and their offshoots in Israel and elsewhere) it is read communally before the morning service of the Day. In northern Europe and the West this custom has lapsed but the Royal Crown is still used for private penitential reading. David Slavitt's inspired translation of this classic poem into contemporary English--printed with Hebrew text on facing pages--will make the Royal Crown newly available and accessible to students and scholars of medieval Jewish literature and philosophy and to the general public as well.
