From the publisher of the legendary South America Handbook comes the fifth edition of the most practical and informative guide available to this remarkably diverse country and its breathtakingly beautiful island neighbor. Husband-and-wife team Robert and Daisy Kunstaetter bring a combined total of 40 years of living and traveling in Latin America to their coverage of this tiny equatorial nation, leading readers on excursions both on and off the "banana pancake trail," including Quito, the jungle, the Pacific Coast, the national parks, and volcanoes. Footprint Ecuador and Galápagos also includes full coverage of the islands that inspired the theory of evolution, from the legendary "center of the earth" to the Avenue of Volcanoes. Fully researched, checked, and updated by the authors, this guide includes tips for culture-sensitive travel, advice for women traveling alone, and a comprehensive background section with Spanish words and phrases.

Bang for the Buck This is the Best Equador Guide Out.......2006-02-22
There was a day when `Rough Guide' and `Lonely Planet' were the best South America guides available for travelers that go "off the beaten path." But slowly, year by year, `Footprint's coverage of South America has improved, and now Footprint is the best Ecuadoran guide you can buy.
I have lived, on-and-off, in Peru for 10 years. Being allergic to the fumes of tour buses and the crush of camera slinging sightseers, I seek out South America's extraneous locations. For the past few years I have used my slowly disintegrating car to drive the highways (poco) and byways (mucho), that South America offers. This year I drove from my home, near Cusco, to Equador.
Of the five guide books that I took with me, I found myself consistently reaching for `Footprint' first. The guide listed the best (clean & reasonably priced) accommodations, and the best restaurants, some of which were exemplary. Most important, `Footprint' listed places that the other guides missed completely, and they were great "finds"!
Regarding Quito, the Galapagos and other "must see" tourist destinations, `Footprint' has solid recommendations and very good coverage. FYI - Quito has become one of the top centers for studying Spanish in Latin America, and the Spanish language school section in this guide is excellent. Also, noteworthy is the "Special Interest Travel" section, which includes: Birdwatching, Climbing, Scuba Diving, Rafting, Biking, Trekking, etc.
All that glitter is not gold (so said Pizarro), and the guide does have flaws. `Footprint' continues to use the cumbersome use of letters to tell you the `approximate price' for accommodations (i.e., LL=$150 and up, L=$100-$149, A=$66-$99, B=$31-$45 until you get to my price range - G=$3 and under). The legend is at the front of the book, and, unless you have a good memory for the mundane, you will find yourself flipping back and forth. It would definitely be more "user friendly" just to quote the price in dollars. The city maps are too small, and definitely not as good as most other guides; and the guide has more than 60 intrusive advertisements for hotels & tour companies which causes one to question the integrity of the author's recommendations.
Bang-for-the-buck, this is the best guide out for exploring Equador. It gives you more choices than the other guides and I found the listing always reliable. 4.5 stars
Really Disappointing.......2005-08-11
Having used a couple of Footprint Guides in Southeast Asia, I came to think of them as the best of all guidebooks. So I was really excited to see a new edition of this book coming out a month before I'm due to leave for Ecuador - both the Lonely Planet and Rough Guide were last published a couple of years ago, making the information several years out of date.
The book is a real disappointment for the independent traveler. Descriptions of sights are terse, more on the level of Lonely Planet than Rough Guide's sometimes overly detailed enthusiasms. That would be excusable if the coverage of basic travel information were complete, but it's not. Worst of all, there's a single bus chart at the front of the book, with prices and travel times but not frequencies. Individual cities sometimes have bus schedules, sometimes not, and some bus connections that are in RG and LP simply aren't listed. Does the bus to where I need to go run once a day, once an hour, every 10 minutes, or never? Tell me, dammit...I'm sorry, that's a lot more important information than where to get a great French meal in Quito. (The authors basically say, "There are a lot of excellent luxury restaurants in Quito, so we'll tell you where to find expensive fondue, but we can't be bothered listing inexpensive places." Jeez...)
Astonishingly, there's not even a schedule of when and how often buses leave Quito for other destinations. That's understandable in a Fodor's, but when the much shorter Ecuador chapter in the South American Handbook is of more concrete help in planning a trip than the new Ecuador Footprint, something's wrong.
Used to be that Footprints had compact and reliable hotel, restaurant, and transport information. In this one, the list of Quito restaurants and nightclubs is nearly as long as the entire section on sightseeing. It's not a total disaster, but it's really a letdown. I'll be taking the Rough Guide, too, and if this weren't a lot more current than RG, I'd return it.

I am planning my second trip to Ecuador and this book is a step above the other books I have seen. Reliable and comprehensive.
The Best GUIDEBOOK TO ECUADOR PERIOD!!!.......2003-07-26
I have traveled extensively to Ecuador for the last 15 years and used to use Lonely Planet which is also a good book but by far the best is FootPrints.. Although it doesn't have as many colorful pictures as the other books, it by far has the most information, phone numbers and information as all the others combined. The Insight book which I also own has a lot of nice 4 color pictures but leave it at home!! No Use at all. The Footprints edition tells all the information from the larger cities to even the smaller towns and out of the way places. I am a freelance travel consultant and have studied all guidebooks to Ecuador, I have checked some of the hotels and restaurants and it seems to be very accurate. Things do change in Ecuador, the food, the exchange, the buses, etc. This was my 15th trip and once again I would not travel without this guide... Thanks.

Great pics, great information.......2002-12-08
This is a wonderful book for the garment sewer who wants to work with African fabrics. You learn about the characteristics of a variety of African fabrics, how to recognize true mudcloth, fancy prints vs. wax prints etc. and how and where to buy them in and outside Africa. -Plus you learn technical tips on how to sew these fabrics, and the book is full of pictures of clothing that incorporates them. The book has staying power. It even includes patterns in the back.
A unique and excellent introduction to African fabrics.......2001-06-08
African Fabrics provides crafts people with fourteen original projects which use African fabrics to create tunics, place mats, pillows, shawls and other items. Discussions of mudcloth, fancy prints, Kuba cloth and Kente cloth, among others, provide a unique and excellent introduction to African fabrics as a whole, making this more than just a crafts guide. A wide audience will find it important for both its historical overview of African fabrics and its artistic/crafts attractions.
At Last, No More Quality ControI Issues With Ethnic Fabrics!.......2001-01-25
Asante Sane - Danke Schon - Merci Beaucoup - Muchos Gracias: A world of THANKS for a book that meets the inspirational needs of the contemporary multiculturalist who loves stylish fashion wear, unique interior design and simple creative construction. The beautiful illustrations were quite fascinating and they served as great enhancement to the book's well written information and neat instruction. From the front cover to the back cover and all of the pages in between, author Ronke Luke-Boone takes the reader on an exciting journey that is richly infused with lessons in history, geography, fabric preservation, nifty sewing techniques, super shopping resources and much, much more. Most valuable for me is the instruction she provides for working with the popular mud cloth, Kubba cloth and Kente. Unfortunately, these hand crafted textiles defy the sewing logic that is normally associated with that of the symmetrically printed machine woven fabrics. One must be taught how to reinforce these ethnic textiles correctly and how to lay the patterns properly to prevent the completed garment from taking on a life of its own while it is being worn. Ms. Luke-Boone provided a corrective experience for me in this regard. Previously, I had not had the desired success in working with these fabrics, so I had set them aside. Reading through the book several times was the much needed source of motivation that guided me to complete two Kubba cloth pillows and a beautiful mosaic swing coat, pieced with mud cloth, denim, Korhogo, calvary twill and tea-dyed linen burlap, just as she instructed. At last, no more quality control issues with these fabrics. I recommend this publication to any one from any culture who has basic sewing skills and a great flair for exotic styling.

Book Description
During the end of the nineteenth century and the first decades of this century, the French Riviera became the most desirable of getaways, first for European aristocracy and then for the young American "smart set." Against the dramatic background of plunging mountains, rocky harbors, and sweeping bays, the glitterati of the Cote d' Azur built exquisite villas in styles ranging from Medieval, Romanesque, and Classical Revival to the modern.
The authors have been granted unprecedented access to these extraordinary houses, and capture their magical exteriors and interiors: enchanting gardens in beautiful hillside settings; gilded furniture with fine needlepoint upholstery; opulent tapestries, mosaic floors, and Aubusson carpets. This is the ultimate book for sybarites and Francophiles alike.

Book Description
Originally intended as a journal to chronicle the lengthy journey to international adoption, Finding Myself, Finding My Daughter is the sincere and heartwarming memoir of a woman who soon discovers she must find herself before she can adopt a child.
In the first pages of her autobiographical tale, author Cheryle Rietmann reflects on her turbulent childhood and a violent first marriage that brought her to the brink of suicide. Eventually, Rietmann finds happiness after marrying Gregg, her second husband and the father of her two sons, but the desperate ache to find the lonely little girl she has envisioned for years finally becomes too much to ignore. Gregg and Cheryle begin the mound of international paperwork that finally leads them to an orphanage in Ukraine and to their beautiful daughter, Ola. By reflecting on her learned lessons of love and perseverance, Rietmann is at last able to recognize and accept the path that led her halfway across the world to an orphanage full of the hopeful faces of children.
Finding Myself, Finding My Daughter will become a guide and companion for anyone who has ever searched for themselves and their place in the world, ultimately teaching them that each and everyone of us, in our own small way, can make a difference.
Book Description
"Her Heart Can See" offers an intimate, informed look at the life and times of Fanny J. Crosby (1820-1915), the most prolific of all American hymn writers. Though long gone, Crosby is still hot: her songs, including such all-time favorites as "Blessed Assurance," "Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior," "Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross," "Rescue the Perishing," "Safe in the Arms of Jesus," "I Am Thine, O Lord," and many others, continue to be sung all over the world.
Born into a poor family in Putnam County, New York, Fanny Crosby lost her sight in infancy through the negligence of a doctor attempting to treat an illness that had caused her eyes to inflame. While scarring her eyes, this tragic event did not scar her heart. Fanny went on to compose more than 9,000 hymns during her lifetime, along with many secular songs, cantatas, and lyrical productions of various kinds. Celebrated in her own day for her gospel hymns, Crosby was also very publicly involved with New York City's rescue missions and with other benevolent efforts, and she rubbed shoulders with the likes of Henry Clay, Grover Cleveland, Winfield Scott, Dwight L. Moody, Ira Sankey, Jenny Lind, P.T. Barnum, and many other famous figures who people these pages.
Drawing on primary sources including thousands of unpublished Crosby manuscripts held in the Billy Graham Center at Wheaton College Edith Blumhofer sorts fact from fiction in the life of this remarkable woman whose biographers have often cared more about inspiration than about accuracy. Blumhofer sets Crosby fully in the context of her times and responsibly limns her life as a gifted nineteenth-century northeastern Protestant woman, in the process showing why "this diminutive woman" held and still holds such fascinating appeal.

disappointed.......2007-08-17
I purchased this book as a teaching tool for my music classes this year. So far, I'm over half way through the book, it is more of a history of New York and early America than a story of Fanny Crosby. Instead of learning about her, I'm reading about how the Irish and the catholics didn't get along and other political problems of the day. it's ok to put the person in the setting, but the setting is the focus. The writer even questions the character of Crosby by always being skeptical of her positive outlook on life. Although, she always has to come back and say that everything she wrote did point to that fact. I've been very unimpressed.
An unsentimental account of the life of an extraordinary woman in the context of her times........2006-04-13
I came to this book knowing very little beyond the sentimental inspirational "Story Behind the Hymns" profiles provided by the religious press. You will go away understanding her world and understand how influential she was in that world. The book places Fanny Crosby in the context of her age, when American Protestantism was at the peak of its influence on society. It explains how she fit into society, she was either related to--or knew--most of the people who held social or political power in the Northeast during the 19th century. This was before Church life had become marginalized from American Life.
One would expect to discover about Crosby's hymns and the growth of Evangelicalism. But one will also learn about the education of the blind, social work, the growth of the Music Publishing industry and the development of copyright law! You will also discover that--yes she was related to Bing Crosby and had a close relative who became a Mormon!
If you read this book, you will receive a great exposure to a wide scope of American life and how one women experienced it with everything but her eyes! A producer at PBS's "The American Experience" could very well use this book as a keystone to developing a wonderful documentary.
The Protestant Saint.......2005-08-11
People in the latter nineteenth century and early twentieth century(and those today who know of her) considered Fanny Crosby to have been one of the greatest persons who ever lived. They very well may have been right. This tiny (4'9") woman, blinded shortly after birth, wrote over 10,000 gospel hymns, many of which survive today, such as, 'Near the Cross', 'Blessed Assurance', 'To God be the Glory' and others(see the Cyber Hymnal for a partial listing). Having lived her life in poverty for the most part, she wrote her timeless hymns for the masses to enjoy. Fanny knew and conversed with the greats of her era: Presidents Lincoln, Van Buren, Polk, and Cleveland; Gen. Winfield Scott, Henry Clay, Dwight L. Moody, Ira Sankey, Eliza Edmunds Hewitt, Horace Greeley, and many others. She had a troubled marriage, where she and her legally-blind spouse were separated for many years. She was truly the servant of all, and was sought out by the high and low for counsel and prayer. Active for many years on New York City's rescue mission circuit, she was a speaker for whom crowds would line up around a city block and wait for hours to hear. An active member of the International Order of The King's Daughters and Sons, she also aided the city of Bridgeport(CT)with their missions on skid row. I would urge anyone to read this wonderful biography of a chosen soul who taught the world many lessons, chiefest among them that, no matter one's disability in life, one can truly excel. Get yourself a copy of this book and enter a more gentle, humble, and pious age where the things of God were held in major importance by persons in all stations of life.

Fanny's bio & other books/etc.......2007-01-11
As it was not me who received the books and cd of Fanny Crosby, I am unforuneately unable to give them a rating. My mother was the person that recieved the books and cd of Fanny, and to my knowlege they have helped her with what she originally needed them for and is pleased with them. The rating I have given you on her behalf is only an estimate as I don't know what she would put herself. Sorry for any inconvenience and thank you for your business.

Sightless for life, this brave girl's soul was destined to electrify generations to come as she became the great hymn writer.
Customer Reviews:
This book repeats itself repeats itself.......2004-03-15
I don't really have many complaints about this book, that is if you are just wanting to know a bunch of facts and information about Fanny Crosby. The complaints I do have is that this book loves to repeat itself and it also likes to put in meaningless or random quotes and thoughts. When I first began to read this book I thought that it was going to inspire me or make me have a new appreciation for Hymn writers, but in fact it has made me think of them as pretty boring. I really wish that this book wasn't so boring and drawn out because I was looking forward to reading it, but then once I got started I realized how much I couldn't wait for it to be over.
A Lost Saint: Fanny J. Crosby.......2003-11-02
Fanny Jane Crosby (1820-1915), needs no introduction to most people as far as her hymnwriting is concerned. Her best hymns, "Blessed Assurance," "To God Be the Glory," "Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross," "I Am Thine, O Lord," "He Hideth My Soul," and many others, are among the greatest gospel songs ever written, and have a place in the "memory banks" of most people raised in any sort of church environment. However, the greatness of some of her lyrics has obscured the equally extraordinary life of a woman who, for many of her almost 95 years on this planet, was known as the "Methodist Saint." Ruffin's contribution to the "Heroes of the Faith" series does much, but not enough, to bring the amazing life of this lost saint to the attention of a modern audience. Blind from the age of six weeks as a result of gross medical malpractice, fatherless from the age of ten months, and trapped in an unhappy marriage for much of her adult life, "Aunt Fanny" nevertheless rose above afflictions which would have incapacitated many people to give the world some of its most inspiring songs of the Christian faith. In this day when many modern religious lyricists have grown wealthy from their works, it is an astounding revelation to know that Crosby wrote most of her hymns for a few dollars each, and never retained the rights to any of them. Not only that, until she became too old to care for herself, Fanny lived in the Bowery, which was then, as now, one of the worst sections of New York City, and daily spent her time and the little money she had giving aid to some of the most needy segments of her day's society. This book fills a needed gap by giving us a great deal of inspirational material concerning Crosby's ministerial activities (among other things, she became one of the few popular female evangelists of her day), but more should be done to relate the life of this amazing, yet little-known, woman to the songs she wrote that have inspired countless Christians for over a century. A more complete listing of all her important hymns would also be helpful. Nevertheless, this is certainly the best book on Crosby in print today, and I would sincerely recommend it to anyone who wishes to rediscover the wonderful life of this lost saint.
Inspirational Account of Blind Hymnwriter.......2002-09-02
Not long after her birth in 1820, Fanny Crosby was blinded by the improper treatment of an eye infection by a supposed doctor. Yet despite the distress this caused her family, little did they suspect the paths which this disability would lead their remarkable child down. Fanny Crosby would surpass her obstacle of blindness and become a prolific poet and a compassionate servant of the Gospel of Jesus. From her early schooling in a newly established school for the blind she amazed people all around her with her surprising knack for writing poems, earning her fame and the nickname "The Blind Poetess."
A devout Christian throughout her life, she eventually put her poetic talent toward hymn writing. Throughout her life she composed over 9,000 hymns, although as the author points out, due to this massive output, many of the lyrics were of lower quality and sentimental. Nonetheless, many of her better hymns were very popular in the churches of that day, and reportedly many of them led to the conversions of people who were touched by their message. I would have enjoyed it if the author had included more of the hymn lyrics in the book, as I am unfamiliar with most of the hymns mentioned. Of the ones included some did seem a little "fluffy" and overly sentimental, yet she still had a great impact on many people both through her hymn-writing and her caring and generous behavior. Altogether it was a pretty interesting look into the life of a Christian woman who overcame her physical limitations to be a shining witness of the Gospel.
Great Resource On Hymn Writer Aunt Fanny Crosby.......1998-08-15
In the work the author takes the reader through the life of Aunt Fanny. He talks about the Puritan town she grew up in, and her first poem at 8 when she talks about the blessing of being blind. The Author gives great background into the many people that shaped her life, and the lifes that she touched. It is amazing to know that the author found her 204 pen names, and many of her 9,000 hymns. A great work about the Amazing Faith of a Sweet Little Woman. I suggest this as reading for any Christian, Musician, Poet or Teacher.

Methodist Saint.......2005-09-25
Although Protestant, she is known as the "Methodist Saint" who was famous in her day as a great hymmal poet ("Pass me not, O gentle Savior", "Safe in the Arms of Jesus", "The Blood Washed Thong") and as a great Christian.
Blind since childhood, she longed for "the crystal streams of literature" and later expressed her faith and personal relationship with Jesus ("floodtide of celestial light") through her "song-theology."
"That some of my hymms have been dictated by the blessed Holy Spirit, I have no doubt," she said.
Though blind she wrote such line as:
"The winds a carol murmur, soft and low,
While silver stars, that gem the arch of night"
Active and vital to her ninties--"when I look down the avenue of these ninety years..."--she donated most of her royalties from her books to the needy and the blind.
Her songs are well-known staples of churches and devotionals today.
Book Description
Fanny Crosby lived to be almost ninety-five years old and penned a total of over eight thousand sacred songs and hymns. More remarkable than that is the fact that this life's work was accomplished without the aid of eyesight. She began writing poetry at the age of eight, but was forty-four years old when she gave up secular songs to devote her full energies to sacred compositions. From her prolific pen flowed such popular favorites as "Near the Cross," "Safe in the Arms of Jesus," "Rescue the Perishing," and "Blessed Assurance."
