One Beautiful Island.......2000-04-07

I wrote a review on this 2 months ago, but I hope this one go's in. I went there, saw it and done it. The book is very accurate and a great guide to the islands, I recommend it to all first time visitors- don't forget to visit the ragga club on the east side, the owner also has great living accomadations on the ocean for the tourist.

A Great Start.......2007-04-10

Building a model railroad is fun but doing more than the "oval track" needs some skills that all starters to not have. Often, modelers learn by doing and learn a lot from mistakes. This is valuable experience but it is also frustrating. This book attempts to address this problem by presenting the construction of a very modest but still well though out layout that is simple.

This book is made up of reprints of a series of articles from MODEL RAILROADER MAGAZINE. It starts with a simple idea. The layout must be simple to build and not too messy. Each article covers a different facet and the result is a nice little railroad.

Among the topics considered are the building of the table, laying track, building basic plastic kits of buildings, building of some basic car kits along with Kadee couplers, adding specialized track, adding streets, simple kitbashing of plastic structure kits, adding a backdrop, adding water features, weathering, building relief and scenery, control systems, scratchbuilt wood structures, metal structure kits, using mirrors to make a scene look larger, making rocks, adding foliage, building a tunnel, adding signals and operating of the railroad in a realistic manner. Each article is simple but teaches foundational skills.

It is well done.

If you don't have any background in model railroading than this book is a good place to start. It will read great the first time through but don't expect to ever go back to it for reference later down the line. Concepts like control panels, wiring, switches, etc. are all left vaugely discussed, and for this reason it can be frustrating. Make sure you buy this is conjunction with another book better detailed in any areas you don't understand (like wiring).

If you are considering entering the world of Model Railroading you must have this book. It will guide you from an empty room to a fully functioning railroad. Lots of tips and step by step make it very easy for a novice to make a pretty nice layout. Î can't recommend this enough.

A Great Beginner's Guide.......1998-08-28

I had been struggling with how to start railroading for about 6 months when I ran across this book at the library. I finally have some direction and the available know-how to get going. The book covers the most basic subjects of how to get started as well as a few more advanced subjects. It's a must for new modelers!

Great pix, better techniques than the "classics".......2003-04-21

This handbook has great photography of his layouts. [Someone]who complained about expensive commercial scenery has a point, but Schleicher's use of [inexpensive] felt and natural dirt to make good looking grass is an example of a money-saving technique. And the insulation-board technique for building hills is a big improvement over the traditional plaster & paper-maché methods. As with any book of this nature, ideas and inspiration are more the point than a slavish step-by-step plan.
If you're going to get started or if you've already got some experience, this book can give you lots of good advice. There's other books with more detail on specific subjects, but this book has chapters on planning, wiring, scenery, buildings, painting & weathering techniques, wiring for DC systems (not much about digital except its existence), and operations.
I found the book so useful that I bought it so as not to have to keep renewing it from the library!

Nice book but..........2002-10-15

I am beginner in model railroading, and I learnd a lot from this book. However, I noticed one thing in the book , he prefers Woodland Scenics , expensive track systems. Scratch building is completely forgotten.I don't have big budget for my hobby (VERY LOW) and I will have to buy another book beacuse this one is for people with big money in the pocket.

This book truely is a great reference for all model railroaders. Beginners to Advanced modelers can learn from this book. I highly recommend it.

Six layouts which show a variety of modeling techniques........1998-12-23

The six layouts presented are well-assembled reprints of multi-part projects from Model Railroader magazine and are of interest to all skill levels due to the richness of the techniques, methods and scenic details presented. The first two are highly detailed small modules, for the space-challenged modeler. The two 4x8 plans represent the size layout of a typical beginning modeler, one is a basic design and the other of intermediate complexity. The final two layouts are for larger spaces, one for beginners (8x8), and one more complex (13x24) for an aspiring advanced modeler. This book is better than typical plan books because is extensively covers electrical and scenery concepts and techniques.

This graphic production was a bit of a disappointment. The plates are nice but not authentic Scandinavian designs. The floral motifs are similar in nature to those used in painting, however there are none of the historical classic details seen in Scandinavian folkart.

Robert Orledge is a consummate musicologist working in Liverpool, and this work on the neglected French composer Charles Koechlin is a wonderful profile of his entire life's work. Koechlin was a contemporary of Debussy, and Satie, yet we seldom have heard his music. Even today there is scant recordings, and what there was in the past was inferior to our modern ears now. I recall an excellent early disc however with the BBC Orchestra under Antal Dorati with Koechlin's Bander-Log, with Messiaen and Boulez works included.Today however there are exceptions with conductor Simon Rattle, and David Zinman here. The Koechlin aesthetic followed a lifelong fascination with a full spectrum of conceptual complexities in nature, but also classical mythology, Roman civilization, the jungle, the night, starlit sky, dreams and fantasy, yearnings for distant shores, also the sea and water. Water in particular inspired the wonderful set of piano solos "Paysages et marines (1915-16) subtitled Landscapes and Seascapes.There you will find the piano evoking a fluidity largly by sustained sounds in the lower regions of the piano,shaped yet waiting for its full decay.Creativily Koechlin was a miniaturist finding genres(as the piano solo)as deep recepticles for these countless images,where one work could scour through some 40 images. The Chants de Nectaires is an example and has an unusual premise as well, it is a work for unaccompanied flute of some three hours,with an array of dances,prayers, and songs. The virtuoso Pierre-Yves Artaud has edited a performing version, after years of neglect.Koechlin's other side is the Sonatinas for piano which are childlike in their harmonic simplicity,yet not facile in their conception. Orledge identifies all of the genres in Koechlin's creative edifice with a deep focus on the elements of music at work here. Rhythm was not as important as harmony for instnace,yet in melody reigns supreme.He abhorred rhythmic excursion for the mere sake of it. If anything at all Koechlin's creativity utilized his innate gift for lyricism.And being lyrical implies a reduced focus on harmonic progression of rhythmic complexity. Orledge admirable covers each in succession. His life is treated in periods rather than genres, in that he wrote in each,however incomplete and at times immature that creative process proved to be.Also there is a look at his uniqueness as an orchestrator.There are wonderful vintage photographs as well as numerous musical examples, many being reductions and transpositions from the original source.

Why did I never hear of Kurt Waldheim before?.......2002-05-28

That is one of the central questions to the frustrations in this book. That the mundane and the truely horrifying alike has been ignored far too long, just as Austria has white washed the American public into believing that it is the idelic alphine state from the first half of the Sound of Music.

The reader should be prepared for four things when reading this book:

1. It is not easy reading. I am a fairly fast reader even through some of the most difficult material, and this still took me months to get through. Rosenbaum is an excellent lawyer and researcher, he does not make engaging reading. You must really want to read this book to get through it.

2. Be prepared to be horrified. Perhaps the last pages where it discusses that this man's voice, as leader of the human race, will be traveling in space for possibly a billion years.

3. Be prepared to loose any remaining faith you have in the United Nations. Simple fact. The secretary general of the United Nations was a wanted war criminal by that self same organization.

4. Be prepared for a stinging indictment of Simon Wiesenthal. The author says that people have told him that he can not take on a legend and win. He is correct, he can't win, but he certainly does a good job of shattering illusions.

Fundamentally this is a book that should be read. Not because it is fun. Not because it is easy, but with the full understanding that it is not. It should be read though, in the names of the men, women, and children of the Balkans who's justice was denied, both by the mechanics of their own Marshal Tito, by the ineptitude of the United Nations, and most likely by the express consent of the Soviet Union.

Finally though, what this book is best for is in contrast to similar reading dealing with post war Germany. It is important to realize how far the Germans have come by their admission of guilt, painful and sometimes incomplete, which the Austrians have denied themselves and their children in their creation of the victim's fiction.

excellent history.......1999-12-31

I am surprised that this book did not receive wider review, it deserves more acclaim, and is very revealing. I kept "abreast" of Mr. "Herr Oberleutnant" Waldheim for many, many years. And, contrary to a customer review, this book does not portray "Austria" as "the scariest place on earth"; I was in Austria during the time frame of the author's investigation, and Mr. Rosenbaum "hits the mark" in his description. Austrians vehemently deny their past in its ENORMOUS contribution to the HOLOCAUST and the slaughter of "subhumans", especially in the Balkans. Austrians comprised a majority percentage of many units in the Wehrmacht and SS troops stationed in "Yogoslavian Region"; many whom, at that time, hoped for the restoration of the "Austro-Hungarian Empire" (mostly run by the Austrians then) of pre-WWI. Kurt Waldheim was well known in professional Allied military circles, including my "NATO service days", to have been a participant in the slaughter, that "military bureaucrat staff officer" that helped the likes of Eichmann and Loehr. But during the 70's, his past was so much like the Soviets, as well as the then-present tinpot governments from Romania to Asia, that he "flowed" through easily. ..........Anyway, this book is excellent reading, the truth is ladened in the details that can be so overwhelming to any reader; but, then again, that is how the evils of history escape true review.

Jewish Paranoia gone hay-wire.......1998-07-28

This book is Jewish Paranoia gone hay-wire. After reading it you may think Austria is the scariest place on earth. It's not so much that the reporting is shotty and one-sided, it's the general sense of conspiracy that is ludicrous. ML

I Was Not Sold.......2002-04-14

I think all of you have heard the stories that Kurt Waldheim was a ...Nazi that went on to be the head of the UN, well this book tries it's best to prove this theory. The book covers Waldheim's full life, and at first the reader would almost think it was an authorized biography. It covers the first 20 years of his life in a nice and short method that seams that it could have been anyone growing up in Europe at the time. When we hit World War Two that is when the family has problems and this book turns into a very unauthorized biography. After reading the book I went to the library and pulled up a few of the old news paper articles on the topic when it was big news, and it looks like this author captured the mood of the media at the time. Convict the man for ratings and let him prove he did not do it, a very difficult issue with something so old.
