Glenn Randall's book contains the usual information--how to load a backpack for the best weight distribution, how to fold a map, how to ventilate a sleeping bag--found in other backpacking how-to books, of which there are several on the market. It also takes several thoughtful side trails to discuss such matters as building wood fires in the wilderness (don't, Randall says) and disposing of one's, well, byproducts (pack them out, he advises). Randall knows the wilds and how to survive in them inside out. He is also an engaging writer, and his book belongs in every hiker's pack.

A good, basic guidebook, especially for the novice........1997-01-28

Randall writes from a wealth of experience in the outdoors and has even led parties up Mount McKinley. The book covers all the basics and is an excellent introduction to the sport of backpacking. I especially recommend it for the novice contemplating a backcountry hike. With proper preparation, backpacking and camping can be an enjoyable and even spiritual experience. Lack of preparation can end in death due to exposure or a costly search and rescue. Reading this book will help make your first wilderness experiences a success.

Marketed under various brand names, fleece fabric is an amazingly versatile material that is no longer limited to outerwear garments. Sewing expert Nancy Cornwell has spent years perfecting techniques and developing tricks for working with this sometimes tricky fabric. In Adventures with Polarfleece, she carefully explains all aspects of working with the material, including stitching basics, achieving no-hassle zippers and buttonholes, creating color-blocked patterns, adapting patterns not originally designed for fleece, mastering ready-to-wear finishing details, and adding class with designer details such as ultrasuede accents, sculptured looks, pin tucks, embroidery, and appliqué. Although the bulk of the book comprises tips and instructions for specific techniques and applications, there is also a chapter devoted to 15 step-by-step projects, from a jacket, vest, or cape to a "baby collection" of blanket, pillow, toy, and snuggle wrap. Even if you're used to sewing fleece garments from store-bought patterns, you'll find much to help perfect your technique and produce professional-looking results.

I read this book simulataneously with Rochelle Harpers "Sew the New Fleece." There is much overlap and both books are good. Cornwell's book had a very useful section in the beginning that lists all the mills that make synthetic fleece and pile fabrics, who they supply (e.g., who supplies LL Bean, who supplies Patagonia, etc.), and what the various characteristics are of each type of fabric--she knows what she is talking about in this area. As far as fleece construction techniques, I thought that Harper's book beat out Cornwell's with more options and details. Cornwell's had a lot of "cheater" shortcuts that I wasn't interested in since I want to make good, solid ready-to-wear style outdoor garments. Also, Cornwell's focus was too much on the baby-bunting/"fashion" jacket/granddaughter's outfit-type projects rather than the serious outdoor garment scene. Many of the photographed garments screamed "I'm homemade!," and she spends too many pages on techniques like "fleece sculpturing" that could only have applications in tacky, crafty, homemade looking projects. If your goal is serious outdoor wear, Harper edges out Cornwell, but the serious sewer will want to read both.

I just purchased this title and can't put the book down. It is extremely thorough and includes everything you could possibly need to know including identifying quality fabric, choosing the correct needle, troubleshooting, inserting zippers and embellishing. A definite must read for fleece lovers!

There is no question, the techniques and practical guides in this book are the best I've read. Nancy has comprehensive and detailed photos for each technique! And the ideas are todays look and ready to wear professional. I would urge anyone who is sewing on fleece to hurry and purchase this one. No affiliation just a happy customer! Enjoy

WE'RE BACK!!!.......2003-01-09

Until I read author Yale Strom's book, I thought Eastern EU Jews were dead, moved or assimilated after W W II. There are 200k Jews in East EU (Originally 500k) and 40k were children in 1990.

These children are unique and live as a remnant. Many claim their Jewish heritage, not only in name but in action.

Over 40 photographs, many full page so you can see the details of how the kids live, the author states in the book's Forward, "In short, they are the true new branches of this great tree of Judaism, and though a branch or two might break and wither, the tree's roots are strong. The tree still stands."

Should be in every Jewish library betweeen Hitler's "Mein Kem" and Kahne's "Never Again". We're back.

I was fortunate enough to have Paul Drew come to one of my college classes to discuss his book and i must say his talk was just as powerful as his book. what i really enjoyed was the way he wrote as a normal kind of guy. it was almost as if i was sitting there and he was talking to me like one might talk in a bar. i highly recommend this book

Important and relevant to our understanding of ourselves........1999-08-25

Paul Drew gives the world his diary. His Viet Nam experience is the cover story, but the change in the man is the book. Drew expresses in an intimate and engaging format the impact of war, politics and social upheaval on an everyman. "After the Storm" is a strong statement against streo-typing and against our desire to have history wrapped up in a neat little package. This is an important work in that it combines a valid perspective on the American century with an Odysseus-like inner journey. Highly recommended for the generation that came after the war.

Experience--Reflection--Wisdom--Healing........................1999-07-03

I truly never did so much thinking after reading this book, and I'm still thinking.... As I read, I felt like my vision was getting clearer about how Vietnam made such an impact on not only the veterans' lives, but on their families and friends for the rest of all of their lives. There were many passages that I really would admit are steeped in true wisdom....a wisdom which can be gained only through experience and careful contemplation over many years.....one of my favorite passages was towards the end regarding how the author thought he could best explain what the healing process is like.....with mention of an oppressive dense rain forest bearing down on you, and then you "swallow the sun"........ spectacular....these are the kind of descriptions that jump out at the reader and stick with you for a long time.... I feel that Paul Drew is a little less of a complete stranger now......his reflections make the reader feel like a friend.

"After the Storm" was an amazingly well-written book. In fact I didn't put down until I was finished. One serious sunburn later, I feel I truly understood how a soildier felt during this time, at least Paul Drew.

What I enjoyed most about the book, was the Vietnam soildier's point-of-view and feelings they had while many Americans bashed them out-right. To understand the perspective of a soildier dealing with this was simply quie unbelieveable.

I am flabergasted at the availabilty of Ho's writings, speeches, and patriotism that our government could not understand, did not read or simply ignored. The patriotism there was seemingly impossible to overcome, our soildiers were statistics, "assets", how to you fight for a government that did not appreciate you?

The family aspects were wonderful and I thank God I know this soldier. I am proud of all the Veterens of Vietnam and appreciate all you have done.

Mean streets warm heart .......2005-03-10

This book was something that stirred alot of things inside of me. I was so awestruck, that I did what I have never done with any other author and that was write a letter. The best way to tell my review is to share part of the letter so here goes. Soul searchind is something most of us do at one time or another. Looking for the meaning of life, why we are here? Etc, etc. Sometimes we indulge in our sorrow so much that we forget to see that life is beautiful. So beautiful like our first love, our only love or the love of our lives. How familiar I find the feelings you describe of trying to be cool and the best of friends with your dad. Remembering your mother and the softness, tranquility and peace of mind you can only find in a mother's arms. The elated feeling you had when Trina was your girlfriend Your sense of being a true gentleman, treating her like your secret treasure. The flood that washed over you when she was lost to another man. Damn!!! That tore open an old wound. The author made me feel his pain, his joy to a lesser degree because nothing can compare to living the actual events. The memoir translated into Spanish in no way lost its power whats more there are certain things that can double the impact spoken in the tongue of Cervantes.

it takes you into another time and place and makes you feel as if you were there partaking in every moment described by the author. Being a Puerto Rican growing up in New York's Spanish Harlem was and still is hard, he also describes certain racial issues he confronted as a Puerto Rican of color. Overall the book takes you through a journey through Harlem and other areas in a distinct and creative way.

If you know your classical composers, this game is like a refresher course in their compositions. If you don't know your classical composers, this game is a more advanced (read: trickier) version of "Go Fish!" It's a ton of fun.

The cards are a regular deck of 52, with each composer having four featured works, one on each card of their number (Bach has the Aces, Handel the Twos, Haydn the Threes, Mozart the Fours, Beethoven the Fives, Schubert the Sixes, Mendelssohn the Sevens, Chopin the Eights, Schumann the Nines, Liszt the Tens, Brahms the Jacks,-are these last two jokes?-Tchaikovsky the Queens, and Grieg the Kings). But since it's a regular deck of cards, you can use it for any game if you get tired of playing it strictly as it's own game.

The object of the game is to get the most "sets" of compositions. Players have to ask each other for the specific composer and composition, which is the more difficult and fun part of the game. Instead of saying "Got any Fives?" a player has to ask "Do you have Beethoven's 'Appassionata' Sonata in F Minor?" Therein lies the best part of the game: other players know what you asked for, and therefore know what composer you're searching for, and can "steal" your composer from you. If you don't have any Chopin cards, you can't ask for them, but if you keep it quiet that you have a Chopin card, you can steal somebody else's carefully collected Chopin cards after they've done all the work of finding them.

As a neat little bonus, each card features a tiny excerpt of sheet music of the composition it is labeled as. I suppose that advanced players could play a "hum it" version, where players would have to hum (or maybe play on a piano) the excerpt in order to collect the card they wanted.

I played this game repeatedly with my cousins while on a family vacation; one wasn't a classical music fan at all, but he learned the names of the composers and compositions after playing the game so many times. We had a riot of a time.

As a side note, Amazon says that it might have trouble finding this game for you, but I don't think they would have trouble locating it. I actually bought it in a Mom & Pop type bookstore, so if they can get it, I'm sure Amazon can get it.
