4 out of 5 stars boring city not so dead.......2001-04-25

its hard to find stuff to do in singapore apart from eat and eat and eat again. its a dead city in terms of nightlife except for weekends when everyone packs into a few choice places. anyway, i was happy to see this map out as i have never heard 'groovy' and 'singapore' and 'night' used in the same sentence before! its a simple map and their guide is to the point picking out all the in places to go and where to find a bit of life here. well set out and easy to use - also amusing. i think it must have been hard to find stuff to fill the map but somehow they did it - not that i am dissing singapore. im just glad someone somewhere is trying to locate the all night party! thanks!

                      Book Description

Social and ethical accounting is emerging as a key tool for companies in the 1990s in response to calls for greater transparency and accountability to stakeholders, and as a means for managing companies in increasingly complex situations where social and environmental issues are significant in securing business success.

This is the first book to address the practices of social and ethical accounting, auditing and reporting, and their implications for the development of corporate social, ethical and environmental responsibility. It includes nine case studies, and a historical overview of developments. The editors introduce a methodological framework that allows emerging practice worldwide to be analysed, understood and improved.

This innovative book, written by international leaders in the field, will be of enormous value to business managers, particularly those responsible for corporate affairs, human resources, environmental management, financial management or planning. It will also be a useful text for business students.

I recieved this book for Christmas, and was truly sorry I had placed it on my wish list....I found this book very simplistic, poorly researched and most of all it presented terrible examples of finished projects. A real "Faux pas" No mention ot the long Japanese history for this technique, or examples of the many exquisite traditional pieces.........This is not even good enough for the library.......They should have saved the trees@

                        3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2002-01-16

Surely there are better, more detailed books on shibori. I paid more than the current Amazon price, and I wish I had spent my money on one of the other (more expensive) books. I suspect I will donate my copy to the public library for those who have no prior knowlege of resist dyeing, or those who would like to see what they are getting before they buy.

4 out of 5 stars Worthwhile though not exhaustive.......2000-05-18

Someone who wanted a strong and exhaustive overview of ofshibori told me that he was disappointed by this book, as it is fairlylimited in scope. However, I enjoyed the book very much for what it is. It includes a number of lovely examples of things that are possible with shibori. You will need another book to tell you about the dyes themselves, but most people interested in this book will already have at least one such dyers' book already. This book is well worth its relatively modest price.

3 out of 5 stars Shibori: The Art of Fabric Tying Folding Pleating and Dyeing.......2000-01-21

A very nice, well illustrated book, though not specifically what I was looking for. I wanted a book that addressed supplemental weft (weaving) and subsequent dyeing to produce Shibori.

This books strictly addresses the different techniques(folding, twisting, dyeing) used to achieve a certain look. More advanced than tie-dye, but similar in approach. Would be a good reference for someone getting involved in Surface Design and Fabric manipulation. Worth the price.

If you're dreaming of moving to the country, retiring to a smaller house or just getting away from big home mortgage and maintenance costs, this is a book that you should take a look at. It's a sourcebook and guide to the best small, simple, inexpensive and easy-to-maintain country homes. Seventeen of America's best country architects and designers contributed 86 plans of vernacular-style cottages, cabins, backyard barns, garages and garden sheds. Home sizes range from just over 2,000 square feet for a traditional New England farmhouse and a gracious Southern cottage with a wrap-around porch, to just 144 square feet for a tiny getaway cabin. Addresses, phone numbers and website information will help you reach any of the designers directly to order construction blueprints or to see additional home designs.

4 out of 5 stars Truly Simple Designs.......2000-06-05

The Backroad Home serves as a source book of building plans for all kinds of small buildings. Each of the designs has an illustration along with a floor plan. Text is limited to a few sentences about the design and the address or web site to request catalogs or full plans from. I would have liked more text. I wanted to know more about the design styles. Many of the designs are based on regional architecture like the Amisquam Salt Box or the Pine Island Cottage. While others could be imagined in a field almost anywhere in the country. There are also plenty of barn and outbuilding plans.

A lot of the dwellings do not even qualify for the term house. They are cabins with very small floor plans and only one door. But other plans have three or even four bedrooms and aren't what I would call small.

In the back of the book are even more design sources and a Country Building Directory containing suppliers for things like weathervanes, sundials, antique hardware and brass and copper lighting fixtures. There is a convenient index in the back for referring to specific architectural styles.

I've been searching for plans for small houses for several years. This book has given me access to many new sources. I've finally found a house that's the right size for me and I might even be able to afford it!

Buying country land is the beginning of a great adventure. During the year that I recommend you observe and inventory natural conditions before you build, you will have time to decide not only where your buildings will be planted but what their form will be. Here is a book that extols traditional styles and connects you to the architects who have adapted those styles to modern codes. Architect/editor Berg has found seventeen designers who are unabashed proponents of traditional style, most of whom live the country life, so they have first-hand appreciation for what works and looks best. Each offers mail-order plans for simple but elegant inexpensive country homes and outbuildings. Here are drawings of floor plans and exteriors of 86 designs in all, from a 144-square-foot cabin to a farmhouse and Southern-style cottage with wraparound porch, each of 2,000 square feet. This is a sampler; I checked out the Web sites of the designers and found that they offer many more designs. Most offer plan catalogs.

In addition to sourcing working architects' plans, Berg connects the reader to alternate plan sources, including log homes, timber frame, historic, magazine and Cooperative Extension plans, which are hard to find but nearly free. There is also a Resources section of building codes, building book catalogs and on-line resources, plus other books on country building. If you are a lover of old houses, their uniqueness, wonderful style and design... If you live in an old house, maybe want to add on or are going to be moving into an older home... If you are an architect, designer, builder or contractor... Or, if you are thinking of building and find yourself sick and tired of the please-not-one-more-cathedral-ceilinged-media-room-approach to home design...

Then look no further - Don Berg's "Backroad Home" is the light at the end of the tunnel. The whole front of this wonderful book provides inspiring, right on the mark designs, blueprints and resorces for older houses, cottages, cabins, backbuildings, barns, sheds and even a charming out-door shower! The back is filled with a perfectly edited compendium of resources for old house design, building and materials complete with addresses, phone #s and yes, when available, email. My copy, and it's sister "American Country Building Designs" both purchased just a few months ago, are already dog-eared, marked up, and coffee cup ringed and we have yet to move into our 1850's farmhouse! Great reading, great writing and great fun. Thank you Mr. Berg for writing a book for "the rest of us"

                        Book Description

The newest title in Vendome's best-selling House & Garden series features the homes of those fortunate enough to have realized the universal dream of creating unique hideaways in some of the most beautiful parts of the world. This lovely, all-color book takes readers on an international tour of these retreats - from Bali and Mexico to upstate New York, Provence, the Alps, and beyond. The arrangement is thematic, with chapters on Houses by the Sea, Mountain Retreats, Country Simplicity, and Exotic Escapes, so that the white clapboard simplicity of Nantucket contrasts interestingly with a seaside house in Brittany, while a luscious Tuscan villa stands next to a quaint English country cottage. One shared theme in these houses is that they tend to be more relaxed in decoration than primary dwellings - there is less need for working spaces or formal entertaining, thus the houses tend to be more open and casual, and enforces the mingling of family life and leisure. The informative text pinpoints the key elements of design and decoration, most of which could be applied to any home, and the superb photographs both illustrate these ideas and inspire readers' dreams.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but somewhat disappointing........2002-07-31

Many of the homes featured are interesting and beautifully photographed, even if a bit exotic and large to be simply labeled 'vacation homes and hideaways.' However, as you might expect from House & Garden, it's still primarily an 'interiors book.' There are no floor plans and few exterior photographs. That is the major flaw of the book to me and why I give it a mediocre rating.

                                Book Description

The Healing Heart provides powerful examples of the use of stories and storytelling in encouraging resiliency, empathy, respect, and healing. These engaging books contain stories, and narratives about the use of the stories in activities with different populations (children, teens, those with disabilities, seniors, inmates, etc.) or which address specific social or community problems (addictions, poverty, violence, racism, environmental degradation, homelessness, abuse).

The books are a collective effort containing the expertise of over 60 storytellers and health professionals who illustrate the power of story in moving others to commitment and action, in building self-esteem and mutual respect. Included are folk tales, personal stories, articles, exercises, games, songs, and quotations, together with resource lists of stories, books and community agencies focused on similar themes. Essays include information on why storytelling works, approaches for sharing stories in various settings, how to encourage others to tell stories (involving the audience and creating a safe environment for others to storytell), and how to process the story through song, art, games, improvisational story plays, community projects, and discussion.

The Healing Heart ~ Families focuses on families, dealing specifically with healing through story, health promotion, disease prevention, early childhood intervention, children with medical problems, adopting families, schools, sexual identities, grief, and spiritual healing.

5 out of 5 stars Story Telling As You've Never Imagined!.......2003-03-30

I highly recommend them to EVERYONE!! It has really struck me what a "white bread" existence I've lived as I read these stories - so rich in culture.

They are an exercise of the tongue, of the mind, and of the spirit. They entertain way beyond just a simple bed time story. You can picture the cities, the towns, the people. Just when you think the story a bit to complex for a child, the child chimes in with their own interpretation making these stories even more complex, but in an enriching and entrancing way.

They are more clever than Aesop, more intoxicating than Anderson. And the way they are intertwined with practical applications in life makes the storytelling real.

                                Book Description

From Maine to Arizona and Oregon to the Carolinas, people have come home to the land. They've created original census tracks, new family traditions, and fresh forms of micro-business that combine entrepreneurial verve with a desire to restore to our connection with the Earth. These are the New Settlers.

Since 1985, Beth Robinson Bosk and photographer R.D. Deines have published the now-legendary counterculture newsprint magazine New Settler Interview, a bi-monthly collection of long, engrossing, freewheeling conversations with creative refugees and renegardes. Perched on the Pacific Rim, in a world of ancient forests and salmon streams, they are the intrepid pioneers of America's eco-frontier.

This first book-length collection of these mesmerizing dialogues--including an insightful early interview with the now-famous tree-sitter Julia Butterfly Hill--introduces readers to a rich collection of fascinating folks, provides a "keyhole" peek into the counterculture lifestyle, and captures the spirit of spontaneous adventure that characterizes America's back-to-the-land pioneers from coast to coast.

I love reading the New Settler newspaper from Northern California. These are the stories of the pioneers and activists of Humboldt and Mendocino counties. The backwoods of the Pacific rainforest. Their stories are like the new Foxfire books.--Alex Sydorenko, Chicago, 2001

                                5 out of 5 stars Living Funky.......2000-10-14

Here is gathered an elite corps of the Northern California Conscious -- people who really live the day -- and instructions in the art of what anthropologist Jentri Anders calls "living funky." The first volume of Beth Bosk's projected three-volume oral history, The New Settler Interviews: Boogie at the Brink has all the skinny on how to build with cob (mix sand, clay and straw, pat into loaves, knead into house shape, dry in sun), make charcoal or gunpowder from alder, make love 150 feet up in an ancient redwood tree (wear a harness? Or go bare?), test your fertility (use your fingers), or abort a fetus using black and blue cohosh. The New Settler is always good reading, filled with the kind of detailed how-to advice that makes a book feel like a hammer in your hands. Bosk has lived in Mendocino for thirty-one years and has been putting out her bright, insightful Interviews for fifteen; she is our Studs Terkel, the gentle interrogator, not of working class people like Terkel's, but of activists and artisans who do specialized, interesting labor on their own clock. The purest expression of the life Bosk celebrates comes from Mateel, a "value system" codified by certain people living in the watersheds of the Mattole and the Eel Rivers in Humboldt County, California. The Mateelian world view is also expressed as "minority culture that is young, but intact and determined," and as a "class" of people - not working class, or middle class, but "Class K," designating possibly the highest concentration of people in anywhere in America who built unpermitted, unfinished (i.e., "funky") houses with their own hands. Most of the new settlers represented here are pretty clever in one interesting way or another. But Bosk sees a larger -- more conscious -- program: "As fast as authentically aboriginal societies are disappearing, these folks are stripping their own lives of the garb, or garbage (whatever the metaphor) of 20th -century `civilization' and redressing themselves into paraprimitive communities." In such communities, says Jentri Anders, "the best aspects of primitive societies are combined with the best aspects of civilization to create an ecologically sound, naturally oriented culture. The kind of thing Callenbach describes in Ecotopia.... The tribal concept abides, the concept that we are all members of the same tribe." The enraptured, tribal "we" are clearly the "good guys" here (as one forest activist puts it). "We" are the peaceful bravehearts, the neotraditional feminists, the Buddhist Marxists, the swelling ranks of the "conscious." "They" are Pacific Lumber, Maxxam and Charles Hurwitz, the lost souls in cities, most of the working class, and everybody else. The result of all this consciousness can be a little, well, self-conscious. Freeman House, a watershed worker and author of Totem Salmon: Life Lessons From Another Species (Beacon Press) nicely describes the lure of "native cultures" and the dangers of elitism. "During the 1960s when the response to the dominant culture was such total rejection, and people were looking around for new cultural forms to express, a lot of people embraced the concept of tribalism as the way. All the native cultures had it. The small experiences we were able to gain for ourselves that we called `tribalism' felt wonderful. We were able to shuck off a lot of personal defenses and armoring and get into these various and diverse and close relationships that were so wonderful and right. "And then personally, after a year or two of talking that kind of talk, I came to the realization that those tribal entities had developed tougher skins than the individual entities that went into them in the first place, and that the tribal entities were based, really, on being exclusive. You needed another tribe to feel distinct from and often superior to in order for your own delicious tribal experience to continue. Suddenly it didn't feel so good once I had that intuition." The culture celebrated here isn't really as radical as Bosk makes it out to be. It's elite and rather crushingly traditional. Of seventeen interviews (and two poems by Crawdad Nelson), fourteen of the contributors are men. In the paraprimitive culture of this rainforest -- where living "simply" translates into such weird cultural practices as no birth control and no commitment, cloth diapers and no washing machine -- lots of women cut and run. The "values" of the culture encourage relentless nurture of babies, gardens, goats and what-have-you - primal, earthy, but often lonely work, especially when the men are so busy with their business. Those stories - poignant tales of crushing idealism -- are here too. Almost everything in Boogie is worth reading. There's Charlie Acker's wonderful description of the practical witchcraft of dowsing for water - "the art of finding an unknown without direct evidence." There's the arboreal life of Julia Butterfly before she became famous enough to be branded a sell-out, and a lively interview with La Sara Firefox, who grew up in the hypercharged atmosphere of the Church of All Worlds in Round Valley, one of the daughters of the prolific Troll Brandon, who once bragged in the county courthouse here that he did all the housework for his two wives. Bold new society! Same old humanity! ###

The New Settler Interviews Vol. 1: Boogie at the Brink edited by Beth Robinson Bosk (Chelsea Green; 2000; 289pps; $22.95)

A few years back, a friend gave me a copy of the New Settler, a newspaper zine published in northern California focussing on the pioneers, visionaries and activists involved in creating a new sustainable culture. I was impressed to find out that there were no articles, only lengthy interviews, in-depth, personal explorations of the presented topic(s). Wow! what hard work... to transcribe an interview or two per issue is tedious enough let alone 6-7 per issue. To transcribe tape after tape for a publication that only prints 2500 copies is truly remarkable and exemplifies the commitment Beth Bosk and friends have given to this publishing endeavor. And, she's been doing this for 15 years! This book is Volume 1 of The New Settler Interviews. In this book, we discover interviews with such famous people as Julia Butterfly (in fact, Beth's interview with Julia was the first one of its kind before the mainstream press got a hold of her incredible story). If you want to learn more about what folks are doing in the heart of the logging industry and in the heat of the battle to save the ancient redwood forests as well as green building pioneers (cob, straw), the solar engineering architects, poets, tree living communities, alternative land owning... check this book out. Especially with Beth Bosk as your intelligent guide to these positive futures (she allows the interviewee to go into all sorts of areas that are profound as well as ecstatic), you will not only feel encouraged but it might even inspire us to walk our talk, more and more and more....
