Customer Reviews:
You're going to LOVE ITALY! .......2004-09-24
I've been to Italy several times.....Rome, Venice, Florence, Bologna, Milan, some of the hill towns, etc. Here are my reviews of the best guides to meet you r exact needs.....I hope these are helpful and that you have a great visit! I always gauge the quality of my visit by how much I remember a year later......this review is designed to help you get the guide that will be sure YOU remember your trip many years into the future. Travel Safe and enjoy yourself to the max!
Rick Steves' books are not recommended. They may be an interesting read but their helpfulness is very poor. They don't do well on updates, transportation details, or anything but the first-time-tourist routine and even that is somewhat superficial on anything but the mega-major sites.
Frommer's
These are time tested guides that pride themselves on being updated annually. Although I think the guides below provide information that is in more depth or more concise (depending on what the guide is known for), if your main concern is that the guide has very little old or outdated information, then this would be a good guide for you.
Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet has City and Out To Eat Guides. They are all about the experience so they focus on doing, being, getting there, and this means they have the best detailed information, including both inexpensive and really spectacular restaurants and hotels, out-of-the-way places, weird things to see and do, the list is endless.
Blue Guides
Without doubt, the best of the walks guides.... the Blue Guide has been around since 1918 and has extremely well designed walks with lots of unique little side stops to hit on just about any interest you have. If you want to pick up the feel of the city, this is the best book to do that for you. This is one that you end up packing on your 10th trip, by which time it is well worn.
MapGuide
MapGuide is very easy to use and has the best location information for hotels, tourist attractions, museums, churches etc. that they manage to keep fairly up to date. It's great for teaching you how to use the public transportation system. The text sections are quick overviews, not reviews, but the strong suite here is brevity, not depth. I strongly recommend this for your first few times learning your way around the classic tourist sites and experiences. MapGuide is excellent as long as you are staying pretty much in the center of the city.
Time Out
The Time Out guides are very good. Easy reading, short reviews of restaurants, hotels, and other sites, with good public transport maps that go beyond the city centre. Many people who buy more than one guidebook end up liking this one best!
Let's Go
Let's Go is a great guide series that specializes in the niche interest details that turn a trip into a great and memorable experience. Started by and for college students, these guides are famous for the details provided by people who used the book the previous year. They continue to focus on providing a great experience inexpensively. If you want to know about the top restaurants, this is not for you (use Fodor's or Michelin). Let's Go does have a bewildering array of different guides though. Here's which is what:
Budget Guide is the main guide with incredibly detailed information and reviews on everything you can think of.
City Guide is just as intense but restricted to the single city.
PocketGuide is even smaller and features condensed information
MapGuide's are very good maps with public transportation and some other information (like museum hours, etc.)
Michelin
Famous for their quality reviews, the Red Michelin Guides are for hotels & Restaurants, the Green Michelin Guides are for main tourist destinations. However, the English language Green guide is the one most people use and it has now been supplemented with hotel and restaurant information. These are the serious review guides as the famous Michelin ratings are issued via these books.
Fodor's
Fodor's is the best selling guide among Americans. They have a bewildering array of different guides. Here's which is what:
The Gold Guide is the main book with good reviews of everything and lots of tours, walks, and just about everything else you could think of. It's not called the Gold guide for nothing though....it assumes you have money and are willing to spend it.
SeeIt! is a concise guide that extracts the most popular items from the Gold Guide
PocketGuide is designed for a quick first visit
UpCLOSE for independent travel that is cheap and well thought out
CityPack is a plastic pocket map with some guide information
Exploring is for cultural interests, lots of photos and designed to supplement the Gold guide
Use it along with another book.......2004-07-25
We just returned from 10 days in Tuscany. I bought this book and also Rick Steeves Italy book. While the Florence Tuscany book has more specific information I found myself looking to other guides for more. The maps are hard to read because they are hand drawn and not very detailed. We were there to explore the wine regions and there just wasn't much information about it. Surprising since that is what the majority of the area is. Also, don't let Steves scare you away from Pisa. We didn't find traffic and parking to be a problem at all. I'm glad we didn't follow his advice. The one recommendation that turned out to be the highlight of our trip was Lucca. His suggestion to rent bikes and bike the ramparts was great! For everything else, fortunatley, our villa we had a Frommer's Italy 2003 guide. It turned out to be a much better resource for what we were looking for.
Really made our vacation.......2004-05-09
We just got back from a trip to Lucca, Pisa, Florence, and Siena and we used this book to plan most of the trip. Wow, Rick was almost invariably smack-on on everything. Of the hotels we stayed in, all were from his recommendations and only one of them was unsatisfactory. (Two of the others were terrific.) The restaurants he suggested were all great and his guide to the sights helped us enormously.
If you're going to Tuscany, you should really invest in this book. You'll be glad that you did.
The only guide we took!.......2004-03-14
We just got back from a week in Tuscany. We used several restaurant reviews, two lodging reviews and several museum tours. In our experience the information and maps were very accurate and concise.
A terrific help!.......2003-11-17
This book helped me plan my days in Florence in November, 2003, very effectively. The information on museum days/times was invaluable, although the prices are a little out of date (on the low side). The suggestions for how to see Florence in so many days were also very helpful. And I found the book's tours of major sights to be extremely helpful: there is so much to see in Florence that it is easy to run out of time without help such as this book provided.
I can't speak to the hotel recommendations, however, as I used TravelAdvisor to help select a hotel. I found the restaurant recommendations and walking tours helpful, too. You will want to have a more-detailed map of Florence, however, and your hotel can probably provide a good one for free.
I also took the Rick Steves Italian phrasebook and recommend it highly. I bought both books from Amazon.

Customer Reviews:
One of my favorite design books........2001-03-23
Often I'll enjoy a design book the first time I read through it, but I won't find myself interested in a second perusal. This book , however, is one I find myself drawn to time after time. Not only are the rooms beautifully photographed and fascinating to look at, but the glimpse at lives of the people who live in them is compelling. There are also enough different and unique styles covered by the book that each one doesn't begin to blur with the previous one as sometimes happens in design books that restrict themselves to a particular style. Highly recommended.
Great photographs.......2000-04-28
This book has beautiful and stylish photos that really capture the essence of San Francisco. It is a great gift for anyone who lives in San Francisco or has visited the area. It's a good coffee table book.
Customer Reviews:
This book is WONDERFUL!.......1999-05-28
I'm an avid reader as far as parenting books go. This book has been by far the best book I've read as far as helping your kids begin to use their minds. The chapters are short and the ideas are simple. It is fun to read and it has helped me in knowing which small things make the big differences. I've even purchased this book as a gift for my sister and my friend. I highly recommend it.

Vaughan Williams Studies (Cambridge Composer Studies)
ASIN: 0192820826 |
Book Description
In addition to his great prowess as a composer, Vaughan Williams was a man of strong character and unflagging energy, who lived a long, full life. He was at the centre of musical events in England for sixty years, a period which for sustained musical achievement is probably unequalled in the history of this country. Ursula Vaughan Williams's intimate and detailed biography of her husband used much material not hitherto available to scholars to produce a balanced and judicious portrait. It is now made newly available as a Clarendon Paperback.
Customer Reviews:
Splendid biography!.......2005-05-14
Written by his wife, Ursula, this is as authoratative as it gets. Filled with details, annecdotes, facts, histories and stories with a warmth that invites us to know and understand RVW as a person and as a composer.
I came to this book after reading many books about Gustav Holst. In doing so, I quickly learned of his friendship with RVW. The two were great friends. In this book, you get another perspective on that friendship and friendship with others. RVW was a kind, open, down-to-earth individual.
This is a remarakable biography about a remarkable human being. I'm glad he lived and wrote the music he shared with us all. This book helped me to understand the man and his times and his music. Highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:
Get a feel for life in the WW2-era USAAF..........2004-02-28
1st LT Krueger, a former B-17 Flying Fortress Navigator has written a very interesting book about his experiences as a member of the 95BG of the 8th Air Force. What I liked about this book was the fact that the author began his story in his pre-war civilian days and then proceeds to describe all of his experiences from initial sign-up with the USAAF through training and his tour of duty. Rather than merely citing dry statistics or giving a pure "battle history", the author always describes not only the events themselves but also the feelings and attitudes he experienced. The author's sense of humor is evident in many of these passages. In so doing he succeeds in conveying a very intimate picture of not only the events, but of the times in which they took place and how people lived and thought. Being from Wisconsin myself, I recognized many of the places he mentioned and it was very interesting to see a description of life in Wisconsin half a century ago. In fact, I attended the University of Wisconsin - Madison exactly 50 years after Lloyd Kruger did, and it was a VERY different place ! Reading this book gave me a very vivid impression of life in the 1940's and in the USAAF, including many interesting details about the annoyances and the "grumbling and griping" that went on. Interestingly, the author also decribes some of the "darker" sides of life in the USAAF, including the eventual mental breakdown of his first lead pilot, violent attacks on USAAF officers by angry Army Paratroopers in the aftermath of the D-DAY invasion in Normandy and even alleged "fragging" incidents in the air. Such things are rarely (if at all) mentioned in most histories of the USAAF.
My only real criticism of the book concerns the fair amount of spelling errors and mis-use of words. I feel the publisher could very easily have fixed these with even a casual editing/proof-reading procees prior to publication. While this does not diminish the value of the book's content, it detracts enough from the presentation of the content that I only gave it four stars.
Overall it was a very enjoyable and fascinating reading experience and I plan to purchase the companion volume as well, as this describes each of the author's 35 combat missions in greater detail.
Book Description
This is a book about working-class identity, consciousness, and self-determination. It offers an alternative to middle-class assimiliation and working-class amnesia. The twenty-five contributors use memory--both personal and collective--to show the relationship between the uncertain economic rhythms of working-class life and the possibilities for cultural and political agency. Manual labor and intellectual work are connected in these multicultural autobiographies of writers, educators, artists, political activists, musicians, and photographers and in the cultural work--the poems, stories, photographs, lectures, music--they produce. Illustrated with family snapshots, this collection--the first of its kind--includes the work of a female machinist who is also a poet, a secretary who is also a writer, a poet who worked on the assembly line, a musician who was also a red-diaper baby, and an academic who is recovering the working-class writing of her father. The consciousness that is revealed in this book makes evident the value of class identity to collective, democratic struggle. The contributors are Maggie Anderson, Steve Cagan, Jim Daniels, Lennard Davis, Masani Alexis de Veaux, Sue Doro, Julie Olsen Edwards, Carol Faulkner, Barbara Fox, Laura Hapke, Florence Howe, David Joseph, Linda McCarriston, Wilma Elizabeth McDaniel, Gregory Mantsios, M. Bella Mirabella, Joseph Nassar, Tillie Olsen, Maxine Scates, Saul Slapikoff, Clarissa T. Sligh, Carol Tarlen, Joann Maria Vasoncellos, Pat Wynne, and Janet Zandy.
Book Description
Examines the relationships between nonprofit organizations and donors. Outlines important steps needed in order to develop successful giving-receiving or gift relationships. Provides a framework for donors to determine comfort levels of giving and illustrates how tax changes influence giving. Proposes a meaningful-action paradigm to better understand why donors give, providing a useful guide for fundraising practice and research. Concludes with a challenge to donors to move from a "checkbook philanthropy" to a "citizenship philanthropy."
This is the 29th issue of the Jossey-Bass series New Directions for Philanthropic Fundraising.

Manuel de Falla and Modernism in Spain, 1898-1936
ASIN: 0195145615 |
Book Description
The work of composer Manuel de Falla (1876-1946) ranges from late-romantic salon pieces to evocations of flamenco to stark neoclassicism. Yet his music has met with conflicting reactions, depending on the audience. In his native Spain, Falla is considered the most innovative composer of the first half of the twentieth century. Likewise, in the United States, Falla enjoyed a strong following in the concert hall. But many of his works, especially some of the "colorful" or "exotic" dances from The Three-Cornered Hat and El Amor Brujo, were taken up during the Latin music craze of the 1930s and 40s and appeared in everything from jazz and pop arrangements to MGM musicals. Similarly enigmatic are the details of Falla's life. He never sustained a lasting, intimate relationship with a woman, yet he created compelling female roles for the lyric stage. Although he became incensed when publishers altered his music, he more than once tinkered with Chopin and Debussy. Despite insisting that he was apolitical, Falla ultimately took sides in the Spanish Civil War, initially allying himself rather half-heartedly with Franco's Nationalists but later rejecting the honors they proffered. All his life, his rigorous brand of Roman Catholicism brought him both solace and agony in his quest for spiritual and artistic perfection. In Sacred Passions: The Life and Music of Manuel de Falla, Carol A. Hess explores these contradictions and offers a fresh understanding of this fascinating composer. Building on over a decade of research, Hess examines Falla's work in terms of musical style and explores the cultural milieus in which he worked. During a seven-year sojourn to Paris just pior to World War I, Falla associated with composers Dukas, Stravinsky, Ravel, and the rest of the group known as les Apaches. Later, back in Spain, he played a pivotal role in the remarkable cultural renaissance known as the "Silver Age," during which Lorca, Bunuel, Dali, Unamuno-and of course Falla himself-made some of their boldest artistic statements. Hess also explores a number of myths cultivated in earlier biographies, including Falla's supposed misogynistic tendencies and accusations of homosexuality, which have led some biographers to consider him a saint-like ascetic. She offers a balanced view of his behavior during the Spanish Civil War, a wrenching event for a Spaniard of his generation, and one that Falla biographers have left largely untouched. With superb analysis of his music and enlightening detail about its critical reception, Hess also examines Falla's status in some circles as little more than a high-class pop composer, given the mass appeal of much of his music. She incorporates recent research on Falla, draws upon untapped sources in the Falla archives, and reevaluates his work in terms of current issues in musicology. Ultimately, Hess places Falla's variegated ouevre, which straddles popular and serious idioms, securely among the best of his better-known European contemporaries. What emerges is a gracefully written, balanced portrait of a man whose lofty spiritual values inspired singular musical utterances but were often at odds with the decidedly imperfect world he inhabited.

Book Description
"We saw 39 boxcars loaded with Jewish dead in the Dachau railway yard, 39 carloads of little, shriveled mummies that had literally been starved to death; we saw the gas chambers and crematoria, still filled with charred bones and ashes. And we cried not merely tears of sorrow. We cried tears of hate."
He was the soldier in the jeep with the big Star of David, driving from foxhole to foxhole, sometimes under fire, bringing faith and friendship to fighting men. David Max Eichhorn, a Jewish chaplain in the U.S. Army's XV Corps, saw action across France and into Germany until VE-Day and beyond. He was there at the Battle of the Bulge, participated in the liberation of Dachau, and became embroiled in the behind-the-scenes controversy that led to the execution of Private Eddie Slovik.
Eichhorn's letters show us a devoutly religious man trying to cope with the perils of combat and the needs of his fellow soldiers. They are filled with amazing stories and poignant insights as Eichhorn tells about combat experiences, relations with Christian chaplains, encounters with Jewish refugees, and impressions of the defeated Germans. Once he was ordered to hold a Yom Kippur service in a beleaguered French town that was still under attack. It was a tough assignment, but after 350 battle-grimed Jewish soldiers showed up he wrote, "I tell you unashamedly that, for the first time since I have been in France, I broke down and cried." Yet that experience paled before the liberation of Dachau, where he organized the first Shabbat service for the survivors, or the fall of Nuremberg, where he and a handful of Jews held a ceremony of thanksgiving at the site of Hitler's infamous rallies.
Eichhorn also writes of French villagers hiding Jews, of the dangers faced by chaplains, and of the place of Jews in U.S. Army ranks. Throughout he vividly conveys the experience of war and how it altered forever a small-town rabbi-a man of faith and courage who never fired a gun in combat.

Compelling..........2005-05-11
Rabbi Eichhorn's letters and diary entries portray a family man, soldier and rabbi. The book gives you not just a memoir of the war, but insights into his personal life (letters to his family), his own journals (detailed and much more frank about the war), and finally, reports to various Jewish agencies and the Army (the most disturbing ones of all). How he managed to experience all of this, and still retain his sanity and faith is astonishing. He is a man I wish I could have met, and I respect him highly for all that he did during his life.
A soldier-rabbi's wartime odyssey.......2005-04-09
"The GI's Rabbi: World War II Letters of David Max Eichhorn" is edited by Greg Palmer and Mark S. Zaid, and includes an introduction by Doris L. Bergen. The book brings together not just his letters, but also other documents that illuminate the wartime career of Rabbi Eichhorn, who served as a chaplain in the U.S. Army. His service included time in the European combat zone.
Other texts interspersed among the rabbi's letters are excerpts from his 1969 unpublished autobiography, as well as letters he received from family, friends, and colleagues. Altogether these texts create a vivid portrait of his travels and service. Also included in the book are photos that span the rabbi's entire life, including his wartime service; a glossary of Yiddish and Hebrew words and phrases he uses in his letters; an index; and an epilogue by coeditor Zaid, who is also the rabbi's grandson.
The letters and other texts cover the rabbi's travels in France and Germany, his encounters with important military leaders, and the living conditions he experienced in wartime. The book is full of interesting details about his duties as a chaplain. He discusses the horrors and inhumanity of war, as well as examples of kindness and courage that seemed to restore his faith in humanity. The personal touches on his letters to his wife and children are charming and sometimes humorous.
This is a marvelous book and a fine tribute to a man who, in his own words, strove "to be a good soldier and a good rabbi" during one of the most critical periods in American and Jewish history. Inspiring and educational, "The GI's Rabbi" is an outstanding contribution to both U.S. military history and Jewish studies. I strongly recommend this book for both academic and general audiences.
An intimate perspective of the war.......2004-12-11
This book captures an individual perspective of World War II from someone who was intimately involved. It provides glimpses that historians and even many of the contemporary books did not. It's also an easy book to read -- like reading letters from your family, only these letters are not just about personal matters but about matters of general interest and international importance. A good book to read, no matter what your age, especially in these times.
