Great for information on the rest of Orlando.......2002-11-09

This book was very helpful during our recent trip. I packed it in the backpack to carry in the theme park. I found it highly superior to the Birnbaum book on Disney because this one will tell which rides are worth missing and which are must see's. The Birnbaum book, being the "official" Disney book is just a little too rosy about everything. Hidden Orlando gives the real scoop. I loved the section on Sea World too.

A misleading title leads to a disappointing travel book.......2002-06-18

I bought this book on the premise of showing me some of the little known facts of Walt Disney World. For example: The secrets about the names on the windows of mainstreet; the mysterious hoof prints leading to the Haunted Mansion; or hidden details that I know nothing about.

Unfortunately, after going on our trip, I found it was a water-down version of the far-superior Birnbaum's Guide to Disney World.

My suggestion? Stick with Mr. Birnbaum...I know I will.

Porcelain, the ceramics world's equivalent of gold, is among humankind's most celebrated and beautiful inventions: the perfect porcelain item is translucent, and infinite variations of usage exist for it. It was notoriously expensive because for centuries it could only be obtained overland, through China - some thought it was created by magic, and even among educated people despaired that the sands and clays necessary to make it would be unavailable in the West. All until a rather mad semi-conman, who had already been chucked out of one royal house, lucked upon the patronage of the Elector of Saxony, and then lucked upon the winning formula, thus bringing the art of porcelain-making to the West. For about a generation, Dresden had the monopoly on porcelain manufacturing; following that, industrial spies were able to sell the secret to France (Sevres) and various other European capitals. Nevertheless, Meissen porcelain is still celebrated as Europe's best. Gleeson's story is an excellent recapturing of the strange conventions of the seventeenth and eighteenth century economies and the strange means by which one might make one's fortune under the ancien regime. She is also blessed by some truly colorful characters: Bottger the fortunate (if not accidental)inventor; Herold the painter (who found a way of decorating and tinting the porcelain), and the Elector himself, who was ruthless enough to hold Bottger prisoner until he yielded the formula.

Janet Gleeson is not a storyteller. This becomes apparent as she pops between explaining the arcanum, porcelain making, political strife and the lives of the people involved. The subjects are so compelling, however, that you will not mind too much. It is apparent, too, that she has a passion for the subject of porcelain making, and she does manage to infuse the reader with her interest.

There were many advances during the rennaisance era in Europe that are far reaching. You would think that something so ephemeral as a luxury item wouldn't have much impact, but history demonstrates otherwise. Deception, espionage, war, and even treason were common occurences in 17th and 18th century Europe. All that in pursuit of the secrets for making porcelain is conceptually challenging to say the least.

When one alchemist searching for the legendary philospher's stone performs one illusion too many, he finds himself a "guest" of Augustus the Strong until he provides him with the gold he needs to pay for his extravagantly decadent life style. Fortunately, for the alchemist, he's bright and talented, and just may provide the king with another type of gold to keep the executioner at bay.

The Arcanum, is well written and researched with an extensive bibliography. I was very impressed with the level of scholarship exhibited by Ms. Gleeson. Considering the subject matter, and my preconceptions, I was suitably suprised and impressed at what I learned.

If you enjoy splendidly written historical stories, this is a must read. I must admit that the story started to lose its lustre around the time that Meissen loses its lustre; but, in its entirety, the book is a must read. If you've read The Professor and the Madman, this story is equally enthralling.

Today, porcelain, china, and dinnerwares are common items in a household. This was not always true. Once, hard paste porcelain, the world's best, was literally as valuable as gold. But only the Chinese knew the formula, and they kept their secret from Europeans for nearly 1000 years. So it is fitting that the person responsible for discovering the Chinese's secret was an alchemist, whose true quest was to find the secret for making gold from other less expensive metals.

This swashbuckling tale of adventure, double-dealing, and final victory, is a basic manual for porcelain collectors and dealers, and it is a must for antiques enthusiasts, no matter where their interests lie. Porcelain and its history touch every collecting area to some degree. The knowlege contained in this short history is a must for anyone who aspires to a full education in the decorative arts.

There are many treatment options open to the person diagnosed with prostate cancer. Of course, those available options are related to the specific qualities of the cancer. The person diagnosed with prostate cancer must have knowledge of these options, not only because that is the only way to understand what's going on, but more importantly, because he will ultimately be the one making the teatment option decision. The Sheldon Marks book discusses prostate cancer and the treatment options in a clear concise question / answer format. For myself, I relied on four sources to gather the information needed to make my own traetment option. Three of those sources were flesh and blood doctors. The fourth was this book.

My wife and I found this book to be extremely user-friendly. My doctor suggested this book before I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and it helped us understand the entire diagnosis process. It is completely up-to-date, including nutritional discussions, and it was the best resource we found that discusses all of our treatment options objectively. It was by far the easiest to use and understand compared to some of the other books available--it wasn't preachy and it didn't talk down to the reader. This book has become a well-worn companion of ours and we highly recommend it to anyone that has questions or concerns about their prostate health in general.

Not my favorite on this topic.......2004-06-30

Contrary to other readers, I didn't appreciate this book quite as much as Prostrate Cancer for Dummies. Some of the advice was in conflict with other sources, and I was really concerned with the section that suggested it was kosher to return to the diagnosing urologist for the surgery. Skill and experience are critical for this surgery - I think you should find the best (and forget about professional courtesy). I also felt like the author tended to be arrogant with his opinions. Just my opinion, but I wish I had gotten Walsh's book which I've seen recommended on multiple support sites. I am very happy, though, with the Prostate Cancer for Dummies book which I found to be upbeat and easy to understand.

Of the five or so books I have read on prostate cancer, this has been the most useful. It not only covers the disease and the various treatments, it gives a lot of practical "what to expect" and "how to cope" advice.

It has the best drawings of the prostate and related organs that I have come across.

my otherwise healthy 52 year old husband has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. no one knows the horrible shock and helpless feeling a person goes through in finding out he has this cancer until it happens to you. i read the entire book to him out loud on a road trip this weekend. actually, i skipped the parts that addressed bph and other things beside cancer that can happen to the prostate. also skipped the discussion of treatments other than removal of the prostate which is what he has decided to do. the format is so "user-friendly". it is filled with a wealth of information for whatever treatment the man decides upon. at one point, i ask my husband if he was tired of me reading and he said "no"....it really helped him a lot. this is a scary time for us both and the book gave us knowledge to use for fighting our fears.

A "Must Have" Working Guide for all men over 50!.......2001-01-12

This is a wonderful resource for all men aged 50 and over, whether or not you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. It is organized in a very logical format, from normal male anatomy and physiology to the problems men have which are "benign" and then goes into the entire work-up, diagnosis, treatment and survival options for men with prostate cancer. It has an unbelievable index and is filled with useful information for finding a physician that will listen to your needs and wishes. I especially liked the chapter on diet and nutrition. The entire book is easy to read and understand and is surprisingly positive and hopeful. I was fortunate to receive this book from my doctor, but I am buying and recommending them for everyone I know, now.

My Favorite Prostate Cancer Info Book.......2000-05-07

I was introduced to this book after I had had a radical psostatectomy and spent countless hours researcing the internet. I wish I could have read it early on in my diagnosis and treatment. The book is well organized, clearly written in terms that a layman can readily understand. The layout and chapter arrangement is logical and there is even an appendix listing useful internet web sites.

No sense of direction.......2000-04-01

This book comes much closer to being an autobiography than a biography. Only about half of the book is really about Bob Wills, and it's a poorly-written book to boot. It's similar to listening to someone just "ramble" all over the place, from one subject and time period to another, with little or no warning. It never flows and is hard to follow. The only reason I give it even 1 star is for a few bits of information about Bob Wills that I might not have read anywhere else and it does have some good pictures.

As one other reviewer states, this is unfocused and that is due largely to the face that she wrote this book with Charles Townsends' book open before her, I think. Not enough private or personal information that is really important.

I would have appreciated a more autobiographical slant. I can't help but wonder what a wedding is like, what a marriage is like, when a girl can't put her famous father's name on the invitation.

Interesting and done with feeling, but unfocused........1998-12-04

This book can't decide if it is a biography or an autobiography and doesn't succeed as either; it shifts between the author's feelings about her father, their relationship, and her personal growth, while simultaneously attempting to document Bob Will's life. The result is an awkwardly structured narrative, albeit with some interesting insights (but also some minor factual errors).

Unique entertainment figure revealed with love........1998-07-29

Bob Wills daughter, Rosetta, tells of a man who drew from his family's traditional musical roots in West Texas to develop a sound and a style that have influenced generations of musicians up to the present day.

Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Reba McIntire, George Strait, and others tell of debts owed to the influence of Bob Wills. The book reveals a humble, self-effacing personality secure in his musical talent and innovations. A Remarkable Story of Courage and Humanity.......2002-02-19

Recently I met Agnes Seugnet, author of a newly published book called, "Petit Claude The Orphan Of Auschwitz And His French Rescuers." This is a true story of the rescue of a little Jewish boy in France during the time of the Holocaust. The couple that sheltered and nurtured the child during the war was Mrs. Seugnet's parents. They were members of the French resistance. It is an emotional and very sincere book that can be enjoyed by both teenagers and adults.

Mrs. Seugnet's book is very important. She is a direct link to the Holocaust experience and is willing to share it with others. By reading the book, teenagers can acquire a much deeper and more immediate understanding of the Holocaust. This experience led to my discussing the Holocaust with my own family. I urge other families to talk to their children about these events. To those families with survivors I urge the survivors to talk to their children and grandchildren for you are a link to the past. As Mrs. Seugnet puts it, it is your "duty to share the memory."

An Important Addition to the Resistance Literature.......2002-02-01

This book is an honest and moving true account of an unusual situation: a French woman and a German man protecting a little Jewish boy during World War II. The resolve and nationalities of the couple add a new dimension to our understanding of the complexity of French and German resistance.

Compelling tale of true heroism.......2002-01-28

We always hear about all the terrible things that happened in World War II - how a whole nation ultimately colluded with a psychopath who managed to wreak havoc across the entire world and how millions of people suffered and died for no reason at all. It can lead to a very depressing conclusion about human nature and the world we live in.

So with that in mind, its very refreshing to read a book like this which is about two unlikely lovers, a German and a Frenchwoman, who dared to stand against the fascist regimes of Nazi Germany and Vichy France, risking their lives to save that of a young Jewish boy whose family are, one by one, murdered by the Nazis. There is no more powerful way of understanding the real horror of what the Nazi's committed and also of what an impact one person's decision to do the right thing can have.

The orphan's two rescuers are actually the author's own parents and one gets the sense that this book is as much a personal voyage to understand her parents as it is to relay a heroic tale. As such the intricacies and contradictions of their characters come across in a very compelling and intriguing way.

Overall, I found "The Orphan of Auschwitz" both depressing and hopeful, tragic and heroic. It certainly gives an astonishing insight into the lives of real people living and fighting in that extraordinary period and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is at all interested in how the moral dilemmas of the war forced ordinary people into leading extraordinary lives.
