At last, a surprisingly uncovered topic is given its proper due .......2006-07-13

Most architecture publications devote their attention to commercial and institutional projects or lavish, over-the-top custom homes. This book is rare in that it focuses on a building type that simply doesn't get the attention it deserves, or that is oftentimes falsely dismissed as boring socialist treacle (or worse, designed to be such!) It'd be useful to remember that all that glam mid-century modern stuff promoted by the likes of Wallpaper* and Dwell had its roots in socialist-minded idealism of the 1920s and 30s. How far we've come, from Richard Neutra's Chavez Ravine housing projects to fake Tuscan McMansions in Houston. Bravo.

All that aside, this book admirably shows just how much room this building type affords for beauty, creativity, and finesse for for the Everyman and -Woman who need such stuff the most ... although it may demand of the architect a bit more talent. The architects included herein have pretty much proven their worth since the book's 1997 publication: Josep Llinas Carmona, Herzog & de Meuron, MVRDV, Steven Holl, Wiel Arets, et al. The case studies are extremely well-documented with not only the gorgeous, lush color photos but real visual substance: legible, oftentimes labelled section drawings, site plans, floor-by-floor plans, axons, facade details, etc.

The one omission is the its heavily European slant, but then, the book was simultaneously printed (and probably originated) in Spain... and so one shouldn't fault it that. It isn't aiming to be the World Bible of multi-res, but it does what it can do well.

(This is my first review. I was just going through my own library, couldn't believe this one hasn't gotten any write-up whatsoever, and was spurred to throw in my own two cents.)

I will say but a few words. READ THIS BOOK.
Susie speaks of her dad with love and honesty in "down home" language. I felt like we were having coffee and talking on the porch for a few days. This book is EXCELLENT and I can't believe it took me this long to realize this was "out there".
Willie should be very proud of his daughter's efforts...I do wonder where she is today/how she is/etc. I hope life has been good for Susie. It is RARE to find a book written by a famous person's child that isn't full of negative...negative. SUSIE is positive, understanding and a loving daughter. Amen!

What a superb read how refreshing it is to see a star through the eyes of his own daughter. I am now currently reading this book for a third time and I have only had it for a week. It's a must for all Willie Nelson fans. Well done Susie its brilliant.

A book for Hippies...??.......2007-05-17

I know people will disagree with me, but I couldn't help but roll my eyes at what this book calls Love: "even the flowers are bursting with love when they're dancing about in the breeze" or "love is that fluttery feeling you feel when a butterfly taps on your toes" and so on and so forth. Yes it's cute and wonderfully illustrated, but I prefer to teach my son the biblical veiw of Love according to 1 Corinithians 13 (Love is patient, kind, is not jealous etc.) Maybe I am just a realist, and need to loosen up a bit...lol.

The prose and pictures are sweet reminders of the ways family members share love. I agree with the review by "trumama", the line "love is when somebody quietly listens to everything you have to say" is a reminder to me to stop during my busy day and give my children what they want most-- my time.

Frank Asch's simple illustrations are so soothing to children. My som loves to read his stories over and over. I don't mind reading them because they are so pleasing to look at. This book shows Ben bear who has painted a picture of his mother at school. Ben is bringing the picture home to her when he meets with many friends. Each friend offers a suggestion for improving the picture. In the end, the portrait of mama bear has the eyes of an owl, the teeth of an alligator, the mane of a lion and the neck of a girraf. Naturally, mama bear thinks it is the most beautiful picture ever and hangs it up. This is a very sweet story!
