    The great thing about this book is that it was written by people with an inside view of "The business". Along with the most complete look at Tinsletown they add anecdotes and little known facts that make just reading the book fun.
    And this book covers more that downtown, Hollywood and Beverly Hills. It travels north to Santa Barbara and south to Long Beach and Catalina.
    If you're headed for LA this is the book to get. Even as a died-in-the-wool Angeleno, I found this book informative, usefull and fun to read.

    Here's a 600-page book that's filled to its movie brim, with tons of offbeat things to see and do; bright and breezy in its writing, you'll find facts and other nifty news here about this incredible place called LA and Hollywood that, even if you've lived here all your life (!), you probably never knew existed.

    As a former "angeleno" and film enthusiast, I was amazed at the wealth of information contained in this travel book. I recently visited L.A. and stayed at two of the hotels mentioned, and found the descriptions to be right on the mark. I recommend this book not only to those who are planning a vacation in L.A. but to people who live in L.A. and enjoy watching movies and reading about movie stars.

        For those contemplating entering the popular ever growing COWBOY ACTION SHOOTING sport, Chicoine's new book is the best I've seen too date. This reknowned gunsmith/writer gives you a wealth of facts on the popular firearms of that period and moves right into the modern offerings and clones of those original firearms with outstanding details and thoughts on each.

        He covers the most popular handguns, percussion & cartridge,Colts,S&W's,Remington, Starr and others,the popular and most used rifles in the same thorough style, and shotgun too. I doubt you'll have many questions left to answer if you read this one, about making personal choices.

        The book reeks with QUALITY,the book is filled with absolutely wonderful photographs of original firearms, clones,new offerings,leather goods for them,a color photo section that is breathtaking.

        He then combines all this with a bit of history on the CAS sport, ammunition available for these, tests with the new guns & ammo,lovely photos of CAS shooters right up to the latest items just coming onto the market like the Colt Lightning slide action rifle.

        If this great book doesn't "fire you up" to get into this wonderful sport or for your own at "home" shooting ,nothing will.

        Daves books always seem to "come out" of the box being "classics" before they get around, This one is no different. The best I've seen on this topic to date.

                        5 out of 5 stars Guns of Valverde.......2000-07-07

                        As an avid student of the U. S. Civil War in the Southwest, and a frequent visitor to the battlefields and other skirmish sites in the "Territory of New Mexico," I found P G Nagle's work on Guns of Valverde just as riveting as her previous work entitled Glorieta Pass. Ms. Nagle has carefully researched her subject matter as shown by her attention to historical facts and then masterfully woven them into a story bringing this period of time to life. The fact that I'm so familiar with the factual information helped me enjoy both this latest of her works and the previous one tremendously. I was able to absorb more of the fictional account without having to stop to confirm or contest the factual elements. But whether or not the average reader is knowledgeable about the Civil War in New Mexico is unimportant since Ms. Nagle continues to impress me as a superb storyteller.

                        Ever since The Killer Angels by Shaara and Ulysses by Skimmin were written I have attempted to read more of these historical novels, finding the majority of them to be extremely well written, factual to my satisfaction, and entertaining. Guns of Valverde, like Glorieta Pass, definitely fit into this category. I look forward to Ms. Nagle's sequel entitled Galveston which, I understand, is a work in progress.

                          As the twentieth century draws to a close, it is timely to consider the term "modern house." Among other things, it brings to mind what a house offers in terms of comfort and ease of living. We all live in a modern way, but all of us do not inhabit a modern house.

                          To speak of a modern house in Colombia in the 1940s would have been to speak of change, adventure, and accepting what modernization had to offer-- to welcome the house of the future. There were, fortunately, a number of individuals with a sufficient understanding of the new, exciting movement in architecture who not only had the requisite funds but also the willingness to challenge accepted norms, and who created the foundation for our modern architecture. Much of what is recorded in this volume came to be through several farsighted people open-minded enough to accept the principles of modern architecture as stated by European architects such as Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto and the great American master architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

                          With remarkable sensitivity toward local raw materials, a sober understanding of the expectations of their clients, and the rigorous discipline imposed by the climate, Colombian architects of the 1940s and 1950s designed and erected houses of an integrity and stylistic vision difficult to comprehend in our own materialistic time.

                          Out of the 5 books I own on Crohn's Disease, I find this book one of the better ones as the topic of this book is one that is not covered as much in other CD books. Managing your EMOTIONAL symptoms is an extremely important part of managing this disease and the information in the book is very helpful and is humorous as well.

                          This is the most comprehensive and helpful book I have found on Crohn's disease. It is specific to the disease, not a catch all for all GI problems like most books. There are a lot of useful tips for everyday living and dealing with annoying problems that come with the disease. This book is great for patients, physicians, and other clinicians who work work Crohn's patients. Highly recommended!!!

                          I am a clinical health psychologist working with patients with a variety of illnesses and I found Dr. Trachter's book to be a comprehensive review of the salient issues facing patients with Crohn's disease. Not only would I recommend this book to my patients, but I found it to be a useful supplement to my own knowledge base regarding Crohn's disease and IBD.

                            We know Robert Schumann in many ways: as a visionary composer, a seasoned journalist, a cultured man of letters, and a genius who, having passed his mantle on to the young Brahms, succumbed to mental illness in 1856. Drawing on recent pathbreaking research, this collection offers new perspectives on this seminal nineteenth-century figure. In Part I, Leon Botstein and Michael P. Steinberg assess Schumann's efforts to place music at the center of German culture, in public and private sectors. Bernhard R. Appel offers a probing source study of one of Schumann's most personal works, the Album fr die Jugend, Op. 68, while John Daverio considers the generic identity of Das Paradies und die Peri, and Jon W. Finson reexamines the first version of the Eichendorff Liederkreis. Gerd Nauhaus investigates Schumann's approach to the symphonic finale, and R. Larry Todd considers the intractable issue of quotations and allusions in Schumann's music. Part II presents letters and memoirs, including unpublished correspondence between Clara Schumann and Felix and Paul Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. In Part III, conflicting critical views of Schumann are juxtaposed. Some of these sources are translated into English for the first time.

                            Schumann and His World is a marvelous reference for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of Schumann: the man, his music, how his contemporaries viewed him, what was happening socially and in the music world at the time, and what a range of historians have to say about all of the above. It is not a biography, but rather a collection of essays, letters, memoirs and musical criticism written by Schumann himself, his 19th century contemporaries (incl Mendelssohn, Liszt, Brendel and Weingartner), and by historians of both the 19th and 20th centuries. As a source of primary materials, it is a terrific companion to a biography (I found Jensen's 2001 biography to be great). For many it may not replace the need for a biography, since there are many references that may not be understood without at least a rudimentary knowledge of Schumann's life and his music. As a lecturer in music history, I can say that this book enriched my overall knowledge of Schumann's life and his music, and the music of his time, by one hundred percent.
